The development, character and effects of education in a technocratic ageMathibe, Isaac Ramoloko 11 1900 (has links)
Rapid industrialization, breakthroughs in science and technological development have ushered
in an era regarded as a technocratic age. The advent of a technocratic age has necessitated the
acquisition of technologically appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes, and consequently it
has become necessary to establish education systems that fulfil the demands set by technocratic
age principles.
Present-day education is typified by technocratic age imperatives which include meritocracy,
specialization, vocationalism, professionalism and scientism. Technocratic age education is
further characterized by mass education, free and compulsory education and greater bureaucratic
control of education. In technocratic age education systems, entrance examinations are used to
select learners for advanced education and training. It would appear that this takes place with
little regard for the learner's personal worth or meeting the learner's distinctive needs. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (History of Education)

Assessing industrialisation in South Africa with special reference to textile and clothing trends during the 1990sQobo, Simon Z. T. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: As the wave of globalisation sweeps across the countries of the world, the economies
of these countries are increasingly opening. The industrial and trade strategy approach
is shifting to greater openness due to the pressures of international competitiveness.
This means that domestic economic activity alone cannot sustain the national
economy. One of the features of this openness is trade liberalisation. Trade between
various countries is becoming more important as a way of earning foreign currency to
address balance of payment problems and as well as to boost the domestic economy.
This has great potential, in the long run, to generate employment opportunities.
Immediately after South Africa ushered in a democratic dispensation in 1994 it had to
contend with global pressure to liberalise its trade and put in place economic
fundamentals that synchronize with the global economic order.
The political economy of global trade structure is characterized by bargaining power
inequalities amongst the developed countries (North) and the developing countries
(South). Trade relations between the developed and developing countries has ~
element of power-play that advantage developed countries and the terms of trade are
still skewed in favour of developed countries due to the power that developed
countries wield in the global economic system.
This study uses the structuralist development theoretical perspective (dependency
theory) and the combination of qualitative and quantitative paradigms in
understanding the trade relations between the developed countries. The study, through
this theoretical paradigm, seeks to examine the degree of success or failure of the
Uruguay Round of trade negotiations in particular with regard to tariff reduction
commitments, and opportunities or constraints created thereof. A case study oftextile
and clothing industry will be used, and this will highlight some of the negative
implications of the Uruguay Round commitments.
Handel tussen state

Understanding the Problems in Volume Production and their Connections to Management of New Product Introduction Projects : A Case Study of the Project Management Factors and the Appurtenant Production Effects from Ramp-Up of New Product in Production for Contract Electronics ManufacturingFrost, Niclas January 2016 (has links)
The ongoing globalization of companies has resulted in a highly competitive business climate where companies have to be cost-effective but still flexible with fast response to customer feedback and present in the international scene. In order to meet the fast paced technological development from the competition and changing demand of the customers, companies focus on creating new products and reducing their time-to-market with an early product launch to gain profits from increased market shares. However, in order to maintain profitability of the new product, it becomes even more important for the company to quickly deploy a full-scale production of the product, also known as the production ramp-up phase. Despite being known as a major cost driver in new product development projects, production ramp-up is a research area which have yet received sparse attention compared to research on product launch and time-to-market in new product development projects. However, with shorter product life-cycles and higher market competition it has resulted in a need to shorten the length of a new product’s ramp-up time without making any trade-off to the cost-effectiveness of the ramp-up project and the end product’s final quality. The study identifies the common problems in volume production of a contract electronics manufacturer and their sources of disturbances from the new product introduction process. It also identifies the factors influencing the new product introduction process at the company and how these factors are connected different sources of disturbances. To identify these findings, a single case study was designed and performed at Orbit One AB, a contract electronics manufacturer with a low-volume production of products. The data collection course was executed in an iterative manner over a period of four months through interviews, observation and internal documentation and was backed up and analyzed with a literature study. The data collection through interviews was carried out in two separate rounds, where the first round of interviews was focused on identifying the common problems in volume production and the second round was focused on the factors influencing the output from the new product introduction process. The discoveries from the interviews were analyzed together with the other sources of collected data to reach a conclusive analysis. The results of the study showed that the most common problems in volume production of the company could be traced to six different sources of disturbances: Product, Production System, Design-Production Interface, Quality, Resource Management, and Personnel. The most common problems could also be summarized as: Problems with manufacturability of product; High variation of process performance, Poor correctness of information, Quality issues with products, and High workload on resources. The factors identified in the findings of the study shows that there are multiple and connected factors which affects the final output of the new product introduction process which corroborates with earlier studies and research in the area of production ramp-up. The study did identify two factors which has not been identified by other ramp-up studies, these were: Lack of organizational project culture and customer flexibility.

Marked by the gradual development of important socioeconomic and demographic transformations, the second half of the 19th century constitutes the context of our analyses of the intergenerational social mobility in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, specially focusing on the period 1852-1881. Taking advantage of the availability of census microdata databases – which are to a great extent representative of the population residing in those two provinces in 1852 and in 1881 – as well as of the development of a recent technique of automatic linkage, we used a sample of 4226 individuals who were linked between the Canadian censuses of 1852 and 1881. Those individuals are boys aged 0 to 15 years in 1852, who lived mainly in a rural area in Ontario or in Quebec and who are included in the 20% Canadian census sample of 1852. From this linked sample we could observe the characteristics of the family of origin in 1852 – e.g. the occupational status of the father and the boy’s school attendance – as well as the subject’s own occupational status as an adult in 1881. Despite some challenges posed by the availability and the type of the data as well as by the linking procedure, this sample illustrates quite well the transformations of the labour market that took place during the period of the study, notably the decline of the occupational group of the farmers in favour of the non-manual and manual skilled workers. Nevertheless, despite the decline in the proportion of farmers among sons (in 1881) compared to their fathers (in 1852), using this linked sample we discovered that agriculture continued to play an important role in economic activity and that this sector was even open to individuals with different occupational or socioeconomic backgrounds, i.e. to sons of non-farmer fathers. The sustained importance and openness of the agricultural sector seems to have been more important in Ontario than in Quebec. This difference could be associated with the contrasts between those two provinces regarding the characteristics and the development of the agricultural sector during the second half of the 19th century.

Comarative study Dominican République/MauritiusBuzenot, Laurence 10 November 2010 (has links)
Caribbean Islands and mauritius, in southwest of indian Ocean, dashed into the development in order to reduce risks connected to economy of plantation. Interrogation concerns industrialization. What policies were implemented for industrialization? What types of industries do we find? What are the conditions of establishement? What are the impacts on the socio-spacial development? Reflexion concerns industrialization: first of replacement in the imports then the extroversion. Industrial free zones of export developped within the framework of this last policy. We analyses concept of free zone and the conditionsof their emergence in a economic protected environment (first part.). The compared study to Mauritius to Domican Republic highlights the spatial dynamic of the free zones, widely dependent on possibilities of setting-up. Arrival of the relocated industries has an impact on the social, economic and spatial organizations. New social classes wre born. Mauritian free zone became an industrial district whereas free zones dominican - economic enclave - have different dynamisms. Reproduction of units assembly ends in models of spatial expansion of industrial space which synergy generated by the actor's system (second part.). The dismantling of textile and clothing trade agreement needs new local answers about small and medium-sized entreprises in the territorial development. Impact of free zones in societies leads to study labor culture. What is labor culture? Finally, promote sustainable development and diversification of activities are possibilities to reduce vulnerability of a specialized economic system (third part.).

Historical business cycles and market integrationUebele, Martin 23 February 2009 (has links)
This thesis addresses historical business cycles and market integration in Europe and America in the 19th and 20th centuries. For the analysis of historical business cycles, the widely used methodology of historical national accounting is complemented with a dynamic factor model that allows for using scarce historical data efficiently. In order to investigate how national and international markets developed since the early 1800s, a multivariate dynamic factor model is used. Spectral analysis helps in measuring frequency specific correlation between financial indicators and rivaling national income estimates for Germany between 1850 and 1913. One result is that the historical stock market index used helps to discriminate between competing estimates of German national income. A dynamic factor estimated from a broad time series data set confirms this result. Sub-indices for agriculture and industry suggest that the German economy industrialized earlier than evidence from national accounting shows. The finding for the U.S. business cycle is that relaxing the assumption of constant structural parameters yields higher postwar aggregate volatility relative to the period before World War I. Concerning market integration, it is found that European wheat markets integrated faster before mid-19th century than after. Thus, the impact of the metal hull and steam ship as well as the relevance of American wheat for the world wheat market have perhaps been overstated.
