Barriers of Digital Technologies in Higher Education : A Teachers’ Perspective from a Swedish University / Hinder för digital teknik inom högre utbildning : En lärares perspektiv från ett svenskt universitet

Stüber, Julian January 2018 (has links)
Digital Technologies are gaining more and more importance in higher education as they not only reshape and digitalize the on-campus teacher-student communication but also –  in times of globalization – open up education to the world. It further facilitates individuals who would have been otherwise excluded from education to attend distance education programs. Such possibilities of digital technologies depict new opportunities for universities and enables them to emerge into a whole new market. Apart from all these benefits, the permeation of digital technologies in higher education brings along challenges and barriers for the teachers.   Consequently, the purpose of this study is to identify the digital technologies that teachers are using to fulfill their daily teaching activities and to investigate the prevalent attitude of teachers towards digital technologies in higher education. It further identifies the barriers that arise with the adaption of the respective technologies and examines the strategies which teachers developed to deal with these barriers. For this purpose, the qualitative study follows the interpretive paradigm and adopts semi-structured interviews and a focus group in a young medium sized Swedish University. After coding, categorizing and conceptualizing the findings, the study shows that teachers have an overall positive attitude towards digital technologies but also experience negative emotions when encountering barriers. The identified barriers range from cognitive limitations of teachers, to technological downsides, to issues concerning the support over to institutional constraints. The findings furthermore show that the attitudes, barriers, and strategies to circumvent the barriers are intertwined with and have impacts on each other.

Migault, Ariane 07 1900 (has links)
Based on various scientific studies, news media discourse address more and more regularly the danger posed by connection to all of those who spend too much time using digital devices. A normative load is therefore placed on connection and time. This research project aims to: a) explore what connection means to people whose daily lives involve being connected and questioning their connection; and b) to understand how their approach to connection may orient their experiences of time while at the same time being affected by the temporalities around which today’s societies are organized. The methodological approach that guides this exploratory research features semi-structured interviews conducted in Montreal with four “connected” people who questioned the place of connection in their daily lives. We met once a week for a month and the participants regularly filled out a logbook which they then presented to me at the beginning of each of our conversations. Based on the analysis of interview transcripts, I suggest that the participants share different approaches to dis-connection. The latter can be conceptualized in terms of infrastructure, artifacts and symbols. Also different temporalities modulate and are modulated by this dis-connection as people experience it as a means to fit in, and to aim for an ideal (time) balanced practice.

Web Movements and Organic Intellectuals:

Thalla, Satish 16 September 2019 (has links)
A new kind of social movements are not only introducing individuals from within the masses to new political and social topics, and raising their interest and activity in political education and participation, but also enabling their ability to learn, discuss, deliberate, share, and organize themselves for making the political institutions of the society to work for their interests. This hypothesis was formulated in order to aid the process of finding an answer to the research question: how are digital technologies helping in the development process of organic intellectuals? Based on the concepts presented by Manuel Castells and Antonio Gramsci, a qualitative analysis of the responses collected in four countries across four different continents using semi-structured interviews presented the evidence used to validate the above hypothesis. The research also examines couple of main aspects of the online environment in relation to a global web movement. One is relating to the major criticisms of online political participation such as 'Digital Divide', 'Clicktivism', and 'Simplification', while the second is relating to the dilution of the concept of 'Sovereignty'. The gathered data allows this research to argue against the criticisms, and problematize the concept of national sovereignty. This research questions the general assumption that a global action in support of local issues is based on solidarity, and presents a different perspective focused on the right to demand action based on an identification of global citizenship.

Abdollahzadeh, Avishan, Sangarnegar, Andreas January 2022 (has links)
Background: Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease and a global public health problem. Healthcare in many countries are working hard to reduce diabetes-related complications. Patient self-care and self-management of type 2 diabetes play a major roll during the treatment. Digital health technology and mHealth are resources that can enable patients to feel involved and independent in the management of type 2 diabetes. These health initiatives have the potential to increase the patient’s well-being and quality of life.  Aim: The aim was to describe experiences of the use of mHealth and digital health technologies among patients with type 2 diabetes.  Method: General literature review with thematic analysis based on 11 original scientific articles with a qualitative approach.  Results: The data analysis resulted in five themes: Improved self-care and empowerment, Increased knowledge and patient coaching, Integrity, safety and credibility, Accessibility to care providers, Challenges- costs and technical experience. The results showed that there are both opportunities and challenges with the use of m-health and digital health technology for patients with type 2 diabetes. These health resources could strengthen patients' ability to self-care which contributed to increased autonomy and independence in patients. Conclusions: The patients had a positive experience of applying digital heath technologies and mHealth regarding to self-care activities as well as knowledge and control over the disease state. Digital health care services in long distance enabled easy and convenient access to healthcare professionals for patient with type 2 diabetes, increased their satisfaction and reduced the need for physical visits by healthcare professionals. The cost of technology equipment and low levels of digital competence limited patients’ experience of the opportunities that might be used of these resources. Good and equal health can be achieved by increasing awareness of the opportunities offered by mHealth and digital health technologies.

[pt] CONHECIMENTO E TECNOLOGIA: UMA ANÁLISE DO DISCURSO DAS POLÍTICAS PÚBLICAS EM EDUCAÇÃO / [en] KNOWLEDGE AND TECHNOLOGY: A DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF PUBLIC POLICIES IN EDUCATION

06 April 2021 (has links)
[en] In 1999, Pierre Lévy stated that any reflection on the future of education should be based on a prior analysis of the alterations in the relationship between human beings and knowledge. Today, it is possible to observe that not only this link undergoes profound changes due to the technological advances, but there is also an intensification of the challenges for education. Current pedagogical discourses permeate ideas of changes in the school curriculum and in teacher training programs, along with the need for paradigms that engage with technological innovations. The emphasis of school practice on results, memorisation and marketing interests, to the detriment of the focus on knowledge and culture, is also questioned. However, by examining what is meant by knowledge or technology in the educational field, it is possible to notice a profusion of interpretations. This research aims to identify and analyse the perceptions of knowledge and technology that permeate the educational discourse and how these ideas relate to each other. For that, documents of the Public Policies in Education regarding the inclusion of the digital technologies in school are analysed through Critical Discourse Analysis. Specifically, the National Education Plan 2014-2024 and the Connected Education Innovation Program. Three categories are used to analyse the perceptions on knowledge: Cartesian, constructivist and systemic thinking. Along with them, there are two categories of analysis on technology: technical and sociocultural artefact. It is considered that, although there are indications towards systemic and sociocultural perspectives, the preponderant visions are more related to aspects of Cartesian thought and the perception of technology as a technical artefact.

Digitaliseringens påverkan på veckotidningsbranschen – En fallstudie på företaget Aller media

Holmstedt, Jonas, Larsson, Rebecca January 2020 (has links)
Due to the obvious impact of digitalisation on the magazine industry in combination with lack of previous scientific studies on the subject - this study seeks to increase the knowledge andunderstanding of how the phenomenon of digitalisation has affected companies in the magazine industry. The purpose of the study is primarily to investigate how the company Aller media and its business models have been affected by digitalisation. To investigate this, two qualitative interviews were initially conducted with two managers at Aller media. The interviews were then supplemented with a web survey that were answered by Aller medias employees. The results from the data collection methods show that digitalisation has had a significant impact on Aller media with both positive and negative consequences. In total, Aller media has adapted well since digitalization and with the adoption of new digital business models the company has laid a good basis for remaining relevant in an increasingly digitalized future.

Užívání elektronických obrazovek u dětí ve věku 6-9 let / Screen use by children aged 6-9 years

Svobodová, Lucie January 2021 (has links)
This diploma thesis focuses on the usage of digital technologies by children of early school age (1st to 3rd grade of elementary school). The aim of the thesis is to map in detail the use of screens in children aged 6-9 years and determine the age that would be suitable for the implementation of prevention programs aimed at the healthy use of technologies by children. The research is interested in how much time the children of a given age spend using electronic screens and what type of screens they usually use, what activities they do on the device, how the use differs between boys and girls and whether there are differences in use by children among the first three grades of primary school. The chosen research design is a cross-sectional questionnaire survey in an online form intended for parents. The results of the research showed that the amount of screen time increased with the age of the child and a larger increase was observed mainly in children in the 3rd grade of primary school. Most often, children spend time on mobile devices (smartphone or tablet) and watching TV. We also noticed a slight increase in the use of game consoles for boys in the 3rd grade of primary school, while girls use these devices hardly ever. Thus, prevention programs and education on the safe use and the risks...
