Developing an operational procedure to produce digitized route maps using GPS vehicle location data

Advancements in Global Positioning System (GPS) technology now make GPS data collection for transportation studies and other transportation applications a reality. Base map for the application can be obtained by importing the road centerline map into GIS software like AutoCAD Map, or Arc/Info or MapixTM. However, such kinds of Road Centerline maps are not available for all places. Therefore, it may be necessary to collect the data using GPS units. This thesis details the use of GPS technology to produce route maps that can be used to predict arrival time of a bus. This application is particularly useful in rural areas, since the bus headway in a rural area is generally larger than that in an urban area. The information is normally communicated through various interfaces such as internet, cable TV, etc., based on the GPS bus location data. The objective of this thesis is to develop an operational procedure to obtain the digitized route map of any desired interval or link length and to examine the accuracy of the digitized map. The operational procedure involved data collection, data processing, algorithm development and coding to produce the digitized route maps. An algorithm was developed produce the digitized route map from the base map of the route, coded in MATLAB, and can be used to digitize the base map into any desired interval of distance. The accuracy comparison is made to determine the consistency between the digitized route map and the base map. / Master of Science

Improving Sinkhole Mapping Using LiDAR Data and Locating Sinkhole Hotspots in Johnson City, TN

Predicting infrastructure damage and economic impact of sinkholes requires high accuracy mapping distribution and development. The study mapped sinkholes and sinkhole hotpsots in Johnson City, TN using LiDAR-derived Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and a database of known sinkholes which were matched to LiDAR-derived depressions. For all matched depressions (n = 404), three metrics were calculated: circularity index, ratio of length to width of the Minimum Bounding Rectangle (MBR) and percent coverage of the MBR by the depression, and 3,634 new sinkholes were identified. Newly developed hotspots were identified in north Johnson City and other areas in the south near the Johnson City Medical Center. The methodology developed can be applied to identify hotspots in other small metropolitan cities and the hotspot map produced can be employed in hazard mitigation planning, resource allocation, and made available publicly to property owners and insurance companies.

廣播節目數位化產製模式與流程研究 / A Study of the Digitalized Production Model & Process for Radio Broadcasting

本研究為探討數位化後台灣廣播電台的節目產製模式與流程之改變,依據生產流程管理與廣播節目產製理論觀點,析論廣播節目邁向數位化產製模式之可能性,並依據分析所得描繪可能之模式與流程。 透過對台灣廣播產業的現況分析,指出目前台灣廣播電台的節目產製模式大多偏向「需求導向」產製模式的描述;少數電台則是比較偏向「創意導向」產製模式。雖然自動播出系統已經普遍使用,但只是簡化了播出作業。在節目數位化產製程度上,仍在建立資料庫階段,還未扭轉過去的製播經驗,對於進入數位化產製抱持傳統的心態,減低了邁入數位化的可能性。 因此,研究建議首先廣播電台繼續豐富資料庫的資源,還要提升資料庫的功能性。其次,結合聯播網的產製經驗,擴大資料庫網絡,與其它傳播媒介合作,形成一個「需求與資料庫導向」的產製模式,作為達到數位化產製模式與流程的基礎。 / This research aims to understand the digitizing influence the production model & process for broadcast program. Based on the viewpoint of production management theory and the broadcast programming theory, analyze the current broadcast program production model & process and evaluate the possibility of digitization. According to the result, describe the possible digitalized production model & process for broadcast program. By the current situation analysis of Taiwan broadcast industry, point out their production model is mostly inclined to “effect-to-cause” model, and few are inclined to “cause-to-effect” model. Although the “Radio Computing Service” is generally used, but only simplified the program broadcasting stage. On broadcast program production’s digitization level, Taiwan radio stations are still in establishment database stage, but also retain the traditional production experience. This result showed that reduces the advance possibility of the digitization. Therefore, the research suggests the broadcasting continue enrich the database resource; also enhance the functions of database for strategy-planning. Then, by combining the experience of radio network, expand the database network and cooperate with other mass media. The broadcast production will shift to the "effect-database" model which is the relative concept of digitalized production model.

Purpose – The purpose of the study is to create an understanding of the factors contributing to deviations in the internal document handling at a manufacturing company. When minimising the faults in the document it leads to higher effectiveness for the company. Method – A case study has been conducted at a company. The methods that were used to collect empirical data were interviews and document studies. The theoretical framework was found using a systematic review of what has been studied before. By combing the empirical data and the theoretical framework the studies purpose will be able to be reached. Findings – The study shows that a manufacturing company need to make sure that they use the employee’s competences since they have the best knowledge on how to manufacture the product. To use their competences the management of the company need to organize the company so that they can get a better view of the employee perspective. To minimise the faults, the disturbing elements need to be removed from the work environment since these distractions cause deviations. The digitalisation of the documents will remove most of the simple document faults, but the digital system must use continuous improvements to maximise the use of the system. Several different underlying factors play a role in why deviations occur, why it is important to monitor and work to improve all factors that cause deviations. From a sustainability perspective, there are reasons to expect a more well-functioning and pleasant workplace that increases social sustainability. Handling the document correct lowers the risk for disposal of products because of document deficiencies, and less raw material and energy will be wasted. Not wasting resources will also save money for the company since they will not need to throw away products. Implications – The results of the study can be used as guidance for organizations that operates in a similar situation with the same prerequisites as the case company. With the support of the study, a business can find the deviations in their document handling and learn how to reduce these. Limitations – The case study has been conducted on one company. If the case study had covered multiple companies, it would have reached greater reliability. Since several factors were considered significant to the study the depth of each factor has been limited. / Syfte – Studiens syfte är därför Att skapa en förståelse för de faktorer som bidrar till att avvikelser uppstår i den interna dokumenthanteringen hos ett tillverkande företag. Detta leder till en högre effektivitet genom att dubbelhanteringen av dokument minskar. Metod – En fallstudie har genomförts med intervjuer och dokumentstudie. Den insamlade empirin har analyserats mot studiens teoretiska ramverk för att besvara forskningsfrågorna och slutligen uppnå studiens syfte. Resultat – Människan har en central roll i hanteringen av dokument och det är avgörande att stödja människan i arbetet för att fel inte skall uppstå. Studien har kommit fram till att företag måste nyttja medarbetarnas kompetenser i större utsträckning då det är medarbetarna som ser vad som fungerar i praktiken. För att nyttja medarbetarnas kompetens behöver företagsledningen organisera verksamheten på ett sådant sätt att de skapar en större förståelse och närhet till verksamheten. Det är även viktigt att aktivt arbeta med att förbättra arbetsmiljön då stress och störande moment är faktorer som leder till att misstag uppstår. Utöver detta bör dokumentationen digitaliseras och ständigt förbättras eftersom en digitalisering tar bort majoriteten av de mänskliga felen genom att införa larm och kontrollpunkter som fångar upp misstag. Det finns flera underliggande faktorer som påverkar varför avvikelser sker. Det varierar mellan vilka faktorer som påverkar vid ett visst tillfälle och det är därför viktigt att arbeta för att förbättra samtliga. En välfungerande och trivsam verksamhet ökar den sociala hållbarheten på arbetsplatsen. Dessutom innebär en korrekt dokumenthantering minskad risk för kassering av icke användbara produkter. Att inte behöva kassera produkter som är färdigtillverkade förbrukar mindre råmaterial och energi, vilket både är dåligt för miljön men även för ekonomin. Implikationer – Studiens resultat kan komma att fungera som en vägledning för verksamheter som verkar i en liknande situation med samma förutsättningar som fallföretaget. Med hjälp av studien kan företag hitta orsaker till avvikelser i sin egen dokumenthantering och därefter minska dessa. Begränsningar – Studien har genomförts på ett företag. Om fler företag hade undersökts hade en större reliabilitet kunnat nås. Då flertalet faktorer ansågs vara viktiga att ta med i studien har djupet för varje faktor fått begränsas i omfattning.

Uppsala's student life largely consists of the student nations. The student nations are required to count the number of guests due to fire safety and to meet the regulations from the Public Health Agency of Sweden concerning the current pandemic. This report presents how a mobile application that shows if the student nations are calm, active, crowded, or full was created. The students in Uppsala can use the application to aid the decision of where they want to go, and the nations can use it to count the number of guests. By using this application, the nations are encouraged to keep track of the number of guests continuously and therefore contribute to a more safe environment in the student life of Uppsala. The vision for the application is to be reliable, user friendly, and have a quick response time. This was evaluated through several user experience metrics. During the performed user tests it came to our attention that the application was overall easy to use, had good functionality and that the user interface was minimalistic as well as appealing. However, some of the initial specifications of requirements were not fulfilled, and it appeared that some aspects of the application called for improvements to fulfill these requirements. / Uppsalas studentliv består till stor del av studentnationer. Nationer är skyldiga att veta hur många gäster som befinner sig i deras lokaler på grund av brandsäkerhet och för att följa Folkhälsomyndighetens föreskrifter angående den nuvarande pandemin. Den här rapporten presenterar hur en mobilapplikation skapades som visar om det är lugnt, aktivt, trångt eller fullt på studentnationerna. Uppsalas studenter kan använda applikationen för att underlätta i beslutet om var de vill gå, och nationerna kan använda den för att räkna antalet gäster. När nationerna använder applikationen uppmanas de att hålla koll på antalet besökare kontinuerligt och på så sätt bidra till en säkrare tillvaro för studenter i Uppsala. Visionen är att applikationen ska upplevas som pålitlig, användarvänlig och ha snabb responstid. Detta utvärderades genom användbarhetstester. Under dessa uppmärksammades det att applikationen totalt sett var enkel att använda, hade god funktionalitet och att användargränssnittet var minimalistiskt samt tilltalande. En del av de ursprungliga krav som sattes upp uppfylldes däremot inte, och vissa aspekter av applikationen kräver förbättringar för att uppfylla dessa krav.
