A social constructionist re-conceptualisation of adolescent delinquency

Imrie, Jina 30 June 2002 (has links)
Available literature reveals that most prevalently delinquency has been viewed from a modernist perspective. However, as cybernetic epistemology increased its stronghold within the field of psychology, explanations became increasingly systemic in nature. In this study a literature review is presented which articulates these approaches. This critique is followed by a comprehensive consideration of delinquency from a social constructionist stance as an alternative to modernist and early cybernetic perspectives. Examples are provided as to possible ways in which the label "delinquency" evolves within an interpersonal context, as well as the ways in which the meaning engendered is linked to broader cultural discourses. It has been acknowledged that this does not constitute the social constructionist perspective on delinquency, but represents some challenging ideas about how delinquency is co-created between people. Implications for therapy and research are also discussed. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

This work starts from two premises. First, the biographical narratives are a way to give meaning to their life and are able to express our experiences, organizing them in an orderly and rational discourse. Second, the emergence of certain painful experiences such as the emergence of mental disorders and their consequences (diagnosis and treatment) may be relevant biographical processes, since factors usually act as "disorder" important, compelling the person to give direction of such changes. Thus, it develops here a study on the narrative, based on theoretical and methodological approach of discursive practices and production of meanings, and a constructionist perspective, which sees social reality as a co-construction, historically and culturally located, which gives through the use of language made by speakers as they interact each other. The rise of mental illness as a factor relevant biographical impels the person to deal with such experience, stimulating new stories about himself, whose construction is through the interactions and social contexts which is part of the narrator. The development of research, we focused on the qualitative approach, with two interviews with users of a CAPS. It was used as a model Interview Narrative, proposed by Schultz. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed in order to understand the forms and mechanisms used by users to deal with the effects of illness on their lives and build a sense for this, trading it in various contexts in which they travel. Recognize the multiple possibilities and influences that revolve around the production of meaning in the construction of biographical narratives of CAPS users is a way to reflect on current practices of care, rethinking the notions and concepts that underlie them. Thus, beyond the status of academic production, this paper hopes to foster the development of new ways to understand and act against those who are suffering from mental disorders, seeking to address more broadly the ways in which this experience and deals with the onset of symptoms serving as a subsidy for the construction of further research to keep alive the questions about the work done in CAPS.

The main question which guides this research is the following: How does this discursive process occur and which are the possible effects resulting from it? This research aims to understand, through interpretation gestures of such discourses and from those which undergo the interview statements and the answers given to the questionnaires applied to spectators and parade exhibiters of these samba schools, in what way the negritude conception and the citizenship practice of the black Brazilian people, especially those from Rio de Janeiro, can be affected by the meaning production circulating in the discursive practices of these sambas. The research was theoretically related to the Applied Linguistics, however it articulates theories originated from Cultural Studies and Ethnic-racial Studies as well as it presents some theoretical and methodological fundamentals from the Discourse Analysis of French line. As concerns the methodology, it is of interpretative, qualitative basis with procedures of discursive character. The interview analysis did not reveal, as consequence of the discourses circulating in the sambas, a direct involvement of the black people who were interviewed in struggle for their citizenship practice, but it pointed out sliding of meaning in regard to the negritude emergence / O objeto de estudo desta tese ? o processo de afirma??o, (re) constru??o e (re/s/) significa??o de identidades negras nos discursos que atravessam os sambas de enredo de tem?tica africana das escolas de samba do grupo de elite do carnaval carioca no per?odo compreendido entre 1960 e 2007. Narrative reflections on charismatic discursive practices

Christodoulou, Esther 30 November 2003 (has links)
The purpose for this research journey was twofold: (1) to discover the power of certain discourses in the charismatic church context and (2) to challenge disrespectful discursive practices in order to co-operate respectful, ethical and caring ways of being. Seven leaders in charismatic churches committed themselves to this qualitative research project. The research process resulted in a confirmation by the participants that some charismatic discursive practices can be abusive and also to the acknowledgement that they too have at times fulfilled the role of abuser, even in unknowingly. This research journey ended in Hope. Hope for more transparency and trust between leaders and members, resulting in more respectful practices. / Practical Theology / M.Th. (Pastoral Therapy)

The research is proposed to a reflexive space to confront different curricula politics concerning teaching portuguese as mother tongue. The goal is describe how the other teacher s practices and professional identity are constituted. The languge and the teaching language are based on post-structuralist perspective to understand the discourse constitutive and constituted by individual actions in the social world. The focus on the constituve nature of discourse need an analytical intruments to reveal the agency. Thus, the metaphor (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980; Cameron, 1999) as discursive practices and the positioning theory (van Langenhove & Harré, 1998) show up very productive to describe desires, choices and actions of co-researchers. In a qualitative way, the research identify grammar, discourse genre and reading as teaching practices questioned in the reflexive-collaborative process. The grammar and the discourse genre are the theoretical constructs directly confronted.

It is explained as recurrence of stigma and prejudice and it is understood as a violation of the human rights. In this research, we have tried to know the discriminations suffered by people with HIV/ AIDS in their routine, to understand the reasons to take (or not) these situations to court. For this purpose, we have interviewed professionals working in defense of the human rights in Brazil and people who have already suffered discrimination due to their diagnostic of HIV/AIDS. We have taken as hypothesis that people can: (a) not know their rights; (b) not have information about the existence of this kind of juridical service; (c) fear that this process gives visibility to their condition or (d) find difficulty in proving that they have suffered discrimination. Based on the referential theoretical-methodology of the Social Psychology, our focus of analysis was the discursive practice: the language as an action, and therefore, a result of reality. The results suggest that the discrimination in the scenery of aids is shown in the same way as other kinds of discrimination in our society: in relation to people who are black, who come from the Northwest part of Brazil, disabled people, women, homosexuals among others. One of the obstacles met for the use of juridical instruments in defense of the broken rights is the fact that discrimination may occur in a relation of power and strength that oblige people to be quiet in order to protect their interests and, yet, for being necessary that the discriminations follow the juridical orders. The contexts of health care assistance, of social security and work are determined by a relation of know-can. As a consequence, the discriminations suffered by people in different contexts of their everyday life are seen as banal social practices and frequently people need to protect themselves. This is called social discrimination ( contrary to juridical discrimination). It is necessary to include, in the answers to discrimination, spaces shared in Health care services, ONGs and in the community, also for the professionals that work on the defense of the rights of people with HIV. It is necessary that many strategies are taken to solve this problem, mainly based on solidarity and in the sense of shared community and in social ethics. Finally, we should consider that to understand the processes of production of senses that might help us find answers to a question that still doesn t have an answer: what should we do with the social discriminations that are not considered judicial discriminations?

The intersection of power, knowledge, shared perspectives, and participatory processes in organizational direction-setting: a study of a church

Wollf, Randy 05 1900 (has links)
The abuse of power, dominance of certain shared perspectives, and reduction of personal values into so-called organizational core values are problems that plague traditional organizational direction setting. The purpose of this study was to explore how power intersects with the knowledge formation process, shared perspectives, and participatory processes within organizational direction setting. The study used an ethnographic case study approach to focus on a church that went through a yearlong direction setting process. The church had lost its senior pastor and wanted to determine its direction before hiring a new pastor. The researcher was a participant in that process. His field notes and other documentation provided one source of data. The researcher also interviewed 20 people who participated in the process. In terms of the intersection of power and knowledge formation, the study revealed that the discursive practices of the facilitator along with the voices of those in privileged groups, the outspoken, and those who had engendered trust in others carried considerable weight during the process. At the intersection of power with shared perspectives, there were two major perspectives representing subgroup cultures: a traditional perspective that resisted change and a progressive perspective that wanted change. The progressives dominated the church’s privileged groups and exerted extensive influence on the direction setting process. The organizational symbols of church staff and worship music style served to galvanize some people in the battle over which perspective would prevail. Transparency functioned as a bridge that brought some on either side of the conflict closer together. The research revealed two major types of power related to the intersection of power with participatory processes: the power of pain and intimidation. Both minimized the participation of some women, youth, and traditionalists. All three intersections featured deployments of power that influenced the construction of directional knowledge. This knowledge helped to inform the rules of “appropriate” conduct within the organization’s emerging truth regime. The study revealed that, in this case, robust directional knowledge would have accommodated personal, subgroup, and widely shared values in a state of dynamic equilibrium. The researcher concluded with a discussion of implications for organizational leaders.

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the discursive practices of three teachers that have kept direct and indirect relationships with Information and Communication Technologies (ICT‟s) in the teaching-learning process. To accomplish with this purpose, we have adopted as theoretical framework the model of Digital Multiliteracies proposed by Selber (2004), which considers the multilayered dimensions of Digital Literacies and tries to explain them reasonably through three main levels of computer literacy: Functional Literacy, Critical Literacy, and Rhetorical Literacy. In addition, to better investigate the discursive practices of the teachers surveyed, we also have found support on Positioning Theory, according to which we provide discursive locations for ourselves and the others within a moral order that we establish during a symbolic exchange, building specific points of view inside the positions we take on (Harré and Van Langenhove, 1999). Methodologically, this research is structured as an ethnographic case study (André, 1995; Yin, 2001; Viégas, 2007) associated to a discourse (micro) analysis (Gee et al., 1992; Sacks et al., 1974, 2005; Davies and Harré, 1990). The context of this qualitative research is a public school pertaining to the municipal education system of Juiz de Fora – Minas Gerais. This school is located in a suburbian area of the city. The participants are three teachers that have kept direct and indirect relationships with ICT‟s in education, namely: the teacher of Educational Informatics, the teacher of a classroom (4th year of Brazilian elementary school) and the teacher responsible for the school library. To generate the data, we have used questionnaires, field notes, observation and semi-structured interviews. The corpus of this research consists mainly of the transcripts from interviews made with the participants. The results of this study point out that although the teachers have taken on favorable positions regarding the use of ICT‟s in education, their personal and professional experiences with such technologies tend to influence at different levels of commitment to the project of insertion of ICT‟s in the teaching-learning process. The data analysis also evinces a predominance of Functional Digital Literacy in the school investigated, which indicates the necessity for adoption of more critical perspectives regarding Digital Literacies in educational settings.
