An empirical evaluation of an agile modular software development approach : A case study with Ericsson

Lake, Brandon January 2012 (has links)
Software development is a growing part of many businesses today. The software development approach that is used to develop new software may have a positive or negative impact on the efficiency and quality of the final software product. The objective of this thesis was to propose a refined software development approach and to test it empirically. The software development approach is comprised of three main subcomponents: development style, development architecture, and technical documentation. The software development approach was applied in a case study in cooperation with Ericsson. At the completion of the case study, questionnaires were administered to Ericsson employees to evaluate the success of the software development approach. The results showed that the quality of the software product was high and Ericsson was pleased with the result. The results indicated that the development approach helped the case study be successful in some of the researched areas. The end results suggest that the proposed software process has the potential to be successful in other projects of a similar type and structure.

A study of the Relative Effectiveness of Certain Courses in Improving Language Processes

Hoessel, Virginia 01 January 1942 (has links) (PDF)
In the Stockton Junior College it is common practices that the freshmen who have passed the English matriculation examination are allowed to make their own selection of courses in either the field of English or in the field of speech; those who have failed to pass the Subject A examination are obliged to enroll is a Laboratory English course in which special emphasis is given to increasing the affective use of English skills. Probably, Laboratory English i conceded to accomplish this most effectively or this obligation would not exist. Is this factually trust.

Lärares olika uppfattningar om bedömning och betygsättning i ämnet idrott och hälsa / Teachers Different Perception of Assessment and Grading in the subject of physical education

Frank, Hampus, Hjelm, David January 2023 (has links)
This overview of current knowledge is examining research about teachers comprehension about assessment and grading of pupils’ in the subject of physical education. This overview has had a focus on determining how grading and documentation affects teachers and how they deal with the pressure. The following questions have been the starting point in this overview: What do teachers find problematic with assessment and grading? How do teachers assess and document pupils’ in physical education? and how are teachers affected by grading? The method that has been used is a mixed-method with both qualitative and quantitative form to obtain a result. The qualitative method has been interviews with four PE teachers from two different schools in upper secondary school. The quantitative method has been a survey sent out to PE teachers all around Sweden in two facebook groups made out for PE teachers. The participation reached 181 responses. The database that we used to obtain a literature overview was mainly Libsearch but we also used Swepub and EBSCO. The results show that there is a similar experience regarding assessment and grading in physical education. The result also shows that class size and number of pupils is an issue when it comes to grading because teachers feel like they don't have enough time to teach pupils; they more or less only assess pupils ́ with the curriculum from 2011. Furthermore some of the teachers think that other things like mentorship take too much time from the teacher's plan of the lessons and some teachers feel like the assessment and grading should disappear from physical education. The focus should lie in developing pupils and making them move rather than what the focus is today, assessment and grading.

Back to basics : A self-observational study about beginners’ thoughts and feelings

Ragert, Kentaro January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine my thoughts and feelings that occur during a beginner stage of musical instrumental playing and how I can use the data to further improve my own learning process of instrument playing. I have done this through learning an instrument that I have never played before, in this case the trumpet. I have written a logbook and used video recordings to document the process, and I have used phenomenology as the theoretical perspective for this study. The results emerged through thematic analysis of the empirical data. The result chapter is split into two main sections: The feelings that occur in a learning process and effective pedagogical strategies.  The results show that feelings of frustration and involvement occur during the process of instrument learning, with a predominant focus on frustration. In the result it is shown that a healthy balance between these feelings is required to foster the learning process. The pedagogical strategies used to improve my learning are subgoals, end goals, concrete practices and moments of interplay. Finally, a discussion of the results will take part in relation to the study’s theoretical perspective and previous studies.

Capturing the design process: documentation, reflection, and reuse / Fånga design processen: dokumentation, reflection och återanvändning

Sarampasina, Kyriaki January 2017 (has links)
In a design agency, where time is of essence, it is interesting to see how documentation and reflection, of the design process can be captured by a digital tool with the aim to reuse design. In this thesis, such a tool was deployed at the design agency Apegroup. The main question this study investigates, is the challenge and benefit of a tool that enhances documentation, reflection, and reusability of a design process. The tool was primary inspired by the Computer Supported Cooperative Work and Documenting Design Process area. Interviews, ideation, prototyping, coding, testing and evaluation is some of the activities that were conducted. The results revealed that different design roles values different elements during the design process, which makes it challenging to develop a tool that has value for all. Documentation of activities in the tool was mainly beneficial for the role design director and the value of gathering all internal information about the design process. Reflection of activities in the tool made some of the designers reflect more, but it was challenging to engage all designers. Working with reusability was challenging due to the tool’s need of being used continuously. In the design agency context, the most challenging aspect was time, and competing with the designers’ perceived benefit.

Narrative in Technical Communication

Fenn, James 01 January 2014 (has links)
The focus of this research is on the involvement of narrative learning within technical communication and the benefits that such an involvement can bring to the field. I analyze literature from within technical communication to determine how narrative is perceived, as well as the traditions in technical communication that made the field resistant to the use of narrative in the past. These findings are considered with respect to the history and definition of narrative, as well as to how narrative can improve learning outcomes when compared to expository learning approaches commonly used in technical documentation. While narrative is not a new concept to technical communication, this thesis offers new insights through a multidisciplinary approach that considers the work of philosophers and narratologists that are relatively unknown to the field. Philosophers Daniel Dennett and Jerome Bruner, as well as narratologists Gerard Genette, David Rudrum, and David Darby, show that narrative forms the basis for the construction of reality and that all human learning is based on the stories that we construct to give meaning to the world. Research studies conducted on the efficacy of narrative based learning are discussed in detail and an analysis of the areas where narrative use would most benefit technical communication is provided. Recommendations are made for the future use of narrative in technical documentation and for further research on the implementation and cost of narrative solutions.

Muse, Amina January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to investigate how educational documentations in systematic quality work are used in pre-school practice. What are the possibilities and limitations of the use of pedagogical documentation as an instrument in systematic quality work in pre-school practices? Referring to previous research, theory and empirical data collection, I was able to conduct this study. In the theoretical part, I made use of the constructionist learning perspective. In the empirical part, I used a qualitative research method with interviews and observation in order to gain understanding of the way pre-school teachers use pedagogical documentation in a learning perspective. The study shows that pedagogical documentation used in systematic quality work is associated with opportunities and difficulties. Participants described that pedagogical documentation provides opportunities for children to achieve their potential, and that it focuses on the individual needs of development. In other words, the benefit of using pedagogical documentation of systematic quality work became a tool for the educational quality in the operation. The teachers constantly have the ability to monitor, document and reflect on their work to ensure children's learning and development. This also creates opportunities for children to become active participants in the educational activities. Some of the difficulties are lack of time, children's group size and staff nonattendance. The study's participants also highlight that there is a need for increased staff competence in the use of technical educational tools.

Bergström, Jenny, Brusling, Hanna January 2007 (has links)
Background: The system for nursing documentation has changed since nurses require, by law to construct nursing records. This has led to patient care and nursing becoming more visible and can therefore be reviewed and controlled. Systems for improving patient care using models such as the VIPS and Melior has through time, developed. But the system for nursing documentation still requires development. Aim: The aim of the study was to explore nurses perceptions of nursing documentation. Method: A phenomenographic study was conducted through 11 interviews with nurses in a hospital in southern Sweden. Results: 244 perceptions were formulated. These were categorised into five main categories, and from these 12 sub categories were identified. The five main categories include: attention to details may prevent the purpose, what's not written, for whom does the nurse construct nursing records -and for whom doesn't she, documentation and safety of the patient, Melior and the VIPS-model.

Parkification of Disturbed Landscapes: Uncovering the Process of Transforming Post-Industrial Sites into Urban Parks at Ruseifa, Jordan

Alrayyan, Kawthar Mazin 12 March 2024 (has links)
In 2020, following over 35 years of abandonment, the local authority of Jordan made a major decision to transform three post-industrial sites simultaneously within Ruseifa city into urban public parks, namely the Pepsi Pond site, the Phosphate Ore Hills site, and the Phosphate Old Mines and Administration Building site. These transformative processes, known as "Parkification," not only represent a significant shift in how post-industrial sites are treated but also reflect an unprecedented approach for these sites in Jordan. Therefore, this dissertation has traced and analyzed the parkification processes integral to this transformation as benchmarks for developing post-industrial sites. To unravel the parkification processes, key drivers behind parkification, and perception of stakeholders and decision-makers towards post-industrial sites in Ruseifa, three research questions were examined: 1) How do decision-makers and other development influences Ruseifa view and treat post-industrial sites in Ruseifa city? 2) What are the parkification processes transforming post-industrial sites into parks in Ruseifa? and 3) What are the compelling issues of post-industrial sites, and how do the parkification processes address them? The research employed a two-phase, multi-method qualitative approach, utilizing several data collection methods. It involved gathering secondary data, conducting site visits and case studies, and conducting semi-structured interviews with key players engaged in the parkification projects at the case study sites. Thematic and content analyses were employed, followed by comparative analysis to conceptualize and analyze the transformation processes. The findings highlighted the unique characteristics of each process, identifying three distinct parkification approaches transforming post-industrial sites in Ruseifa. Key driving factors were uncovered by examining the landscape pattern, mechanism of transformation, dynamic interactions among key players, and varying perceptions involved in the parkification processes. The findings also analyzed the parkification approaches within the decision-making processes, contextualizing them as a tool, strategy, or intention. The study's results contribute to a broader understanding of decision-making processes for developing post-industrial sites in Jordan and their transformation into public parks. It provides a framework to evaluate transformation processes on disturbed sites that can be utilized in improving post-industrial planning and preservation. Moreover, this study adds a valuable contribution to Ruseifa, documenting the transformation process of these parkification projects and shedding light on post-industrial sites and their development in Jordan. / Doctor of Philosophy / In 2020, after more than 35 years of neglect, local authorities in Jordan made a significant decision to repurpose three long-abandoned industrial sites in Ruseifa city into public parks. This process of transformation, known as "parkification," marks a monumental shift in how these neglected spaces are perceived and utilized. This dissertation explores and analyzes the transformative journey of these post-industrial sites, serving as a benchmark for future developments. Through a series of investigations, the study addresses three key questions: How are decision-makers and influencers in Ruseifa approaching and treating these abandoned sites? What specific processes are involved in transforming these sites into public parks? And finally, how do these processes address the challenges associated with post-industrial sites? Using a comprehensive qualitative approach, the research combines secondary data analysis, on-site observations, case studies, and interviews with key stakeholders. By examining the patterns, mechanisms, and interactions driving the transformation processes, the study identifies three distinct approaches to transforming post-industrial sites into urban parks in Ruseifa. The findings reveal insights into the driving factors behind these transformations and the diverse perspectives shaping decision-making. Additionally, the study contextualizes parkification as a tool, a strategy, or an intention, highlighting its role in revitalizing neglected spaces. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of decision-making processes related to post-industrial development in Jordan and developing countries, offering a valuable framework for future planning and preservation efforts. Furthermore, it documents the journey of these parkification projects, shedding light on the evolution of post-industrial landscapes in Jordan and their potential for sustainable development.

The Organic Material Culture of Western Ulster: An Ethno-historical and Heritage Science Approach

McElhinney, Peter J. January 2019 (has links)
This research attempts to describe the material culture of the Gaelic labouring classes living in western Ulster in the Late Medieval period. The research combines ethnohistorical contextual and technical scientific analysis of ‘chance’ finds discovered in the region’s bogs. Technical analysis dates fifteen museum objects, characterises the materials from which they were made, and explores their cultural significance. Absolute dating indicates that one third of the 15 objects analysed relate to the Gaelic lordships of late medieval western Ulster, with the remainder reflecting aspects of Iron Age and Post-Medieval material culture and related cultural pracrices. Contextual analysis of the later medieval objects and their find locations provides new insights into Gaelic Irish culture and landscape interactions in this period and place. In addition, the research explores the trajectory of indigenous materiality in western Ulster beyond the Late Medieval period. To this end, the thesis examines the relationship between Late Medieval indigenous materiality, and the folk material culture that emerges in western Ulster in the Modern period. / Heritage Consortium, Arts and Humanities Research Council (UK)
