In the fruit growing activity, studies which contemplate knowledge about the habit of fructification, phenology and the handling of pruning have the objective of providing information and scientific data to the productive chain, particularly to fruit growers, providing them with conditions to improve the handling of their orchards with the objective of obtaining better production and quality of fruits. In this context, the blueberry plant, an exotic species for Brazilian conditions, possesses characteristics which make its cultivation attractive for its insertion in properties of the southern region of Brazil. In view of the possibility of the dissemination of the cultivation of blueberry and of the necessity of knowing the behavior of the species in the climatic conditions of the south of Brazil, it was established as objective to evaluate the productive habit, the phenological development of plants and the handling of pruning and its effects on the productive characteristics of plants as well as the qualitative attributes of fruits for the conditions of the mesorregion of Pelotas, RS. For the conduction of the research, the experiment was carried out in a commercial property located in Morro Redondo, RS, in a production system of ecological basis. Plants of the cultivars Climax, Bluegem and Powderblue were utilized, pertaining to the Rabbiteye group, of low exigency in cold. The evaluations carried out were phenological behavior, characterization of the culture with regard to the fructification habit as well as the application of treatments with different time periods and intensity of dry pruning while it was being evaluated, during the harvest, the number of fruits, the content of soluble solids, Ph., acidity, color, the relationship among soluble solids and the total titratable acidity, anthocyanins, total phenols, ant oxidative activity and production per plant. The results demonstrate that the phenological behavior of the plants follows a pattern of thermal necessity to complete the cycle (on average, 1911, 1927, 4 and 2026.5 GD and 176, 177 and 184, respectively, for the cultivars Climax, Bluegem and Powderblue). As to the habit of fructification, a similarity was verified among the cultivars and the length of branches with respect to the proportion of vegetative gems to floral gems. On average, there are 10.27 floral gems for long branches and 6.33 for the short branches. The productive behavior of branches demonstrates that the more apical a gem is the greater will be the number and quality of the fruits. As to the effect of the intensity of the pruning over the production of plants, it was verified that plants submitted to light pruning presented greater production than those submitted to medium and normal pruning for the three cultivars evaluated. The attributes of physical-chemical quality were, in general, superior in the period of normal pruning for the cultivars Climax and Powderblue. In general, phenological and plant characterization data as to number and distribution of buds and the effect of the position of the bud over the fruits as well as the handling of the pruning associate themselves in determining the most appropriate dates for the practice of cultivation and may serve as an indicator to optimize the utilization of manual labor in the property and converge to improve the production under quantitative and qualitative aspects.

Endogenous Constructivist Implications for Methodology : Focus on Young Children with Developmental Delay in the Social and Emotional Domains

McCrary, Donna E. (Donna Evelyn) 12 1900 (has links)
The Ecologically-Based Activity Plan (EBAP) is proposed as a method to create a transition between special education and general education. It serves as a tool to help classroom teachers assess the environment of the class and as a method for embedding instruction within the naturally occurring context of the endogenous constructivist classroom. In this study the EBAP was used to reduce aggressive behavior and increase prosocial behavior among five children who displayed developmental delays in the social and emotional domains.

Green Consumer Behaviour in Ordering Food Online : A Study of Generation Z’s Green Consumer Behaviour in the Chinese Online Food Delivery Markets

Le, Nghi, Jiayi, Li, Jun, Yang January 2022 (has links)
Background: Ordering online food delivery has become an urban lifestyle for many people around the world, especially in China. The booming of this online-to-offline market has brought lucrative profits to online food delivery industry players, while consumers are enjoying the diversity of food available through this convenient delivery way. However, the environmental issues are also alarming with huge impact on every aspect of human development. This paper is interested in whether the Chinese Generation Z is thinking green when ordering food online. Purpose: The study aims to examine the effect of different influencing factors on Generation Z’s green consumer behaviour in three stages: purchasing, using and disposing for a holistic view. This also serves the purpose of an adaptation of relevant theories in green consumer behaviour studies such as theory of planned behaviour and ecological conscious consumer behaviour framework into the Chinese online food delivery industry. Method: A quantitative research was conducted based on a hypothesised model aiming to analyse the causal relationships between 5 factors (perceived consumer behaviour, environmental control, altruism, narcissism and subjective norm) and ECCB, together with the purchasing, using and disposing stages. 326 valid responses were collected from an online survey for the data analysis procedures in SPSS and SPSS Amos. Confirmatory factor analysis and multiple regression were among the analysis methods conducted. Conclusion: Subjective norm, narcissism, and perceived consumer effectiveness were found to have significant positive effects on green consumer behaviour among the five proposed predictors for Chinese Generation Z. The most impactful determinant is narcissism, followed by subjective norm and lastly, perceived consumer effectiveness.

A SEQUENTIAL APPROACH FOR ACHIEVING SEPARATE SENSIBLE AND LATENT COOLING

Jie Ma (11191899) 28 July 2021 (has links)
<p>Current air conditioning systems generally operate with a relatively fixed moisture removal capacity, and indoor humidity conditions are usually not actively controlled in most buildings. If we focus only on sensible heat removal, an air conditioning system could operate with a fairly high evaporating temperature, and consequently a high coefficient of performance (COP). However, to provide an acceptable level of dehumidification, air conditioners typically operate with a much lower evaporating temperature (and lower COP) to ensure that the air is cooled below its dew point to achieve dehumidification. The latent (moisture related) loads in a space typically only represent around 20-30% of the total load in many environments; however, the air conditioning system operates 100% of the time at a low COP to address this small fraction of the load. To address issues associated with inadequate dehumidification and high energy consumption of conventional air conditioning systems, the use of a separate sensible and latent cooling (SSLC) system can dramatically increase system COP and provide active humidity control. Most current SSLC approaches that are reported in the literature require the installation of multiple components or systems in addition to a conventional air conditioner to separately address the sensible and latent loads. This approach increases the overall system installation and maintenance costs and complicates the controller design. </p> <p>A sequential SSLC system is proposed and described in this work takes full advantage of readily available variable speed technology and utilizes independent speed control of both the compressor and evaporator fan, so that a single direct expansion (DX) air-conditioning (A/C) system can be operated in such a way to separately address the sensible and latent loads in a highly efficient manner. In this work, a numerical model of DX A/C system is developed and validated through experiential testing to predict the performance under varied equipment speeds and then used to investigate the energy saving potential with the implementation of the proposed sequential SSLC system. To realize the sequential SSLC system approach, various corresponding control strategies are proposed and explained in this work that minimizes energy consumption while provides active control over both space temperature and relative humidity. At the end of this document, the benefits of applying the SSLC system in a prototype residential building under different typical climate characteristics are demonstrated.</p>

This work is linked to the research line Society, New Rights and Transnationalization of the Graduate Program in Law, of the University of Vale do Rio dos Sinos - UNISINOS,featuring the theme of ensuring a healthy environment as a fundamental right, through the (re) construction of contemporary social ethical rationality, founded on the category of otherness. As specific objectives tried to characterize contemporary society as risk society and the promotion of fundamental rights in this context; and identify the possibility of ensuring a healthy environment as a fundamental right, through the (re) construction of rationality in the category of social ethics otherness, allowing a human society and ecologically viable. The research was structured by the method of hypothetical-deductive approach, developing from two distinct theoretical contributions that have served for different purposes: Theory of Social Systems, developed by Niklas Luhmann, to observe the contemporary society and illustrate it as producer risk, and healthy environment as a fundamental right in this contex; and Ethics of Alterity, created by Emmanuel Levinas, for the proposed (re) construction of rationality contemporary social ethics as the foundation of human society and ecologically viable and conciliatory to the hypothesis problem presented. The category of otherness to the environment was applied, since it may interpret it as weak (or fragile) in relation to man. This interpretation becomes appropriate as a result of human decisions, which represent an intersubjective space asymmetrical with the environment, due to the production and distribution of new kinds of risks, which, without historical precedent, allow for the destruction of all life on the planet. It was concluded that when considering the degraded environment as the Other, we are called to give an answer to the current environmental crisis by questioning inserted, enabling the society to open a relationship of responsibility, in other words, a relationship ethics and balanced with the surrounding environment.

Accord, Discord, Discourse and Dialogue in the Search for Sustainable Development: Labour-Environmentalist Cooperation and Conflict in Australian Debates on Ecologically Sustainable Development and Economic Restructuring in the Period of the Federal Labor Government, 1983-96

Norton, Paul C. R., n/a January 2004 (has links)
The thesis seeks to provide a deeper understanding of the dynamics of interaction between the environmental and labour movements, and the conditions under which they can cooperate and form alliances in pursuit of a sustainable development agenda which simultaneously promotes ecological and social justice goals. After developing an explanatory model of the labour-environmentalist relationship (LER) on the basis of a survey of theoretical and case-study literature, the thesis applies this model to three significant cases of labour-environmental interaction in Australia, each representing a different point on the spectrum from LER conflict to LER cooperation, during the period from 1983 to 1996. Commonly held views that there are inevitable tendencies to LER conflict, whether due to an irreconcilable "jobs versus environment" contradiction or due to the different class bases of the respective movements, are analysed and rejected. A model of the LER implicit in Siegmann (1985) is interrogated against more recent LER studies from six countries, and reworked into a new model (the Siegmann-Norton model) which explains tendencies to conflict and cooperation in the LER in terms of the respective ideologies of labour and environmentalism, their organisational forms and cultures, the national political-institutional framework and the respective places of labour and environmentalism therein, the political economy of specific sectors and regions in which LER interaction occurs, and sui generis sociological and demographic characteristics of labour and environmental actors. The thesis then discusses the major changes in the ideologies, organisational forms and political-institutional roles of the Australian labour movement which occurred during the period of the study, and their likely influence on the LER. The two processes of most importance in driving such changes were the corporatist Accord relationship between the trade union movement and Labor Party government from 1983 to 1996, and the strategic reorganisation of the trade union movement between 1988 and 1996 in response to challenges and opportunities in the wider political-economic environment. The research hypothesis is that the net effect of these changes would have been to foster tendencies towards LER conflict. The hypothesis is tested in three significant case studies, namely: (a) the interaction, often conflictual, between the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) and the environmental movement in debates around macroeconomic policy, economic restructuring and sustainable development from the mid-1980s onwards; (b) the complex interaction, involving elements of cooperation, disagreement and dialogue, between the environmental movement and the unions representing coal mining and energy workers in the formulation of Australia's climate change policies; and (c) the environmental policy and campaign initiatives of the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union to improve workplace environmental performance and promote worker environmental education. The case studies confirmed the research hypothesis in the sense that, whilst the LER tended overall towards greater cooperation in the period of the study, the Accord relationship and union restructuring process worked to slow the growth of cooperative tendencies and sustain conflict over particular issues beyond what might otherwise have been the case. The Accord relationship served to maintain conflict tendencies due to the dominance of productivist ideologies within the ACTU, and the union movement's perseverance with this relationship after the vitiation of its progressive potential by neo-liberal trends in public policy. The tripartite Accord processes institutionalised a "growth coalition" of labour, business and the state in opposition to excluded constituencies such as the environmental movement. This was partially overcome during the period of the Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) process, which temporarily included the environmental movement as an insider in the political-institutional framework. The long-run effects of union reorganisation on the LER are difficult to determine as the new organisational forms of unions were not in place until almost the end of the period of the study. However, in the short term the disruptive effects of the amalgamations process restricted unions' capacity to engage with environmental issues. Pro-environment initiatives by the AMWU, and cooperative aspects of the coal industry unions' relationship with environmentalists, reflected the social unionist ideology and internal democratic practices of those unions, and the influence of the ESD Working Group process, whilst LER conflict over greenhouse reflected the adverse political economy of the coal industry, but also the relevant unions' less developed capacity for independent research and membership education compared to the AMWU. The LER in all three cases can be satisfactorily explained, and important insights derived, through application of the Siegmann-Norton model. Conclusions drawn include suggestions for further research and proposals for steps to be taken by labour and environmental actors to improve cooperation.

Eilermann, Frank 04 March 2003 (has links) (PDF)

How to evaluate the effectiveness of an environmental legal system

McGrath, Christopher James January 2007 (has links)
The principal research question addressed in this thesis is how the effectiveness of an environmental legal system can best be evaluated. A legal system is effective if it is achieving or likely to achieve its objectives. For an environmental legal system this means achieving sustainable development. The hypothesis tested in relation to this research question is that the pressure-state-response ("PSR") method of State of the Environment ("SoE") Reporting provides the best available framework for evaluating the effectiveness of an environmental legal system. A subsidiary research question addressed in this thesis is whether the environmental legal system protecting the Great Barrier Reef ("GBR") in north-eastern Australia is likely to achieve sustainable development of it. The hypothesis tested in relation to this research question is that the environmental legal system protecting the GBR is likely to achieve sustainable development of the GBR. The principal method used to address these research questions and test the hypotheses is a case study of the effectiveness of the laws protecting the GBR. Particular emphasis is given in the case study to climate change both because it is now recognised as the major threat to the GBR and is a topic of significant international and national interest. This thesis is intended to contribute, in particular, to the current public and policy debate on responding effectively to climate change by using the GBR as a yardstick against which to measure "dangerous climate change" and, conversely, acceptable climate change. There are five major findings of the research. First, most of the legal writing regarding environmental legal systems is descriptive, explanatory and interpretative rather than evaluative. Second, most legal writers who attempt to evaluate the effectiveness of part or the whole of an environmental legal system implicitly use the PSR method and refer to pressures, conditions, and responses but do not acknowledge this conceptual framework. Third, the best available conceptual and analytical framework for evaluating the effectiveness of an environmental legal system is the PSR method. It is the simplest, most systematic, comprehensive and meaningful framework with the greatest predictive power for evaluating the effectiveness of the total social and legal response to human-induced environmental degradation currently available. Fourth, current practice in SoE reporting, at least in relation to the GBR, is largely descriptive and rarely evaluates the effectiveness of the response. The fifth major finding of this research is that, while there are many effective parts of the response to pressures on the GBR, the current environmental legal system is not likely to be effective in preventing climate change from causing very serious damage to the GBR. Based on what we know at this point in time, particularly the technology that is currently available and current greenhouse gas emissions, the impacts of climate change appear likely to swamp the many good aspects of the legal system protecting the GBR. Atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide in 2005 were approximately 379 parts per million ("ppm") and rising by 2 ppm per year. Including the effect of other greenhouse gases such as methane, the total concentration of atmospheric greenhouse gases was around 455 ppm carbon dioxide equivalents ("CO2-eq") in 2005, although the cooling effect of aerosols and landuse changes reduced the net effect to around 375 ppm CO2-eq. Limiting the total increase in mean global temperature to approximately 1°C requires stabilization of atmospheric greenhouse gases and aerosols around 350 ppm CO2-eq. Increasing the net effect of greenhouse gases and aerosols to 450-550 ppm CO2-eq is expected to result in a 2-3°C rise in mean surface temperatures. There are currently no international or national legal constraints to hold greenhouse gas concentrations beneath these levels and they appear likely to be exceeded. These increases in mean global temperatures are expected to severely degrade the GBR by 2030-2040. Even the targets being set by the new Australian Government of reducing Australia's greenhouse gas emissions by 60% by 2050 appear insufficient to protect the GBR. If a 60% reduction in emissions can be achieved globally by 2050 a rise in mean global temperature of around 2.4°C is expected. This indicates the environmental legal system protecting the GBR is not likely to be effective in relation to climate change and, therefore, is failing to reach its objective of sustainable development. Three major recommendations arise from the research. First, legal writers attempting to evaluate the effectiveness of the whole or part of an environmental legal system should use and acknowledge the PSR method. Second, SoE reports should include a stand-alone chapter evaluating the effectiveness of the response. Third, the environmental legal system protecting the GBR should take strong and comprehensive measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions if the objective of sustainable development is to be achieved. Such measures should include setting policy targets for stabilizing atmospheric greenhouse gas and aerosol concentrations around 350 ppm CO2-eq to limit increases in mean global temperature to 1°C. Policy targets of stabilizing atmospheric greenhouse gases and aerosols at 450-550 ppm CO2-eq to limit increases in mean global temperatures to 2-3°C are likely to be too high to avoid severe impacts of coral bleaching to the GBR.

Implicações jurídicas e ecológicas do licenciamento ambiental para mineração

Cardoso, Ana Lúcia Brunetta 15 December 2006 (has links)
Submitted by Marcelo Teixeira (mvteixeira@ucs.br) on 2014-05-14T16:06:54Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Ana Lucia B Cardoso.pdf: 558454 bytes, checksum: 7cef7933a04888b09efa7ac911783230 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2014-05-14T16:06:54Z (GMT). The entitlement of an ecologically and healthy balanced environment and the entitlement of the economic development have become more relevant because of the absence of a correct natural resources exploration. The juridical system must have clever juridical methods capable of making the economic development compatible with the economic activities that generate wealth, in risk of, otherwise, harming the quality of life existent in the planet. The juridical system of the environment licensing in mining must therefore act as a conciliator in the mining extraction allowance and the possibility of recovery of the explored area, including its regeneration plan that should evaluate the necessary effort to make this activity sustainable.
