Design and Evaluation of Domain-Specific Interaction Techniques in the AEC Domain for Immersive Virtual Environments

Chen, Jian 29 November 2006 (has links)
Immersive virtual environments (VEs) are broadly applicable to situations where a user can directly perceive and interact with three-dimensional (3D) virtual objects. Currently, successful interactive applications of VEs are limited. Some interactive applications in the AEC (architecture / engineering / construction) domain have not yet benefited from applying VEs. A review of prior work has suggested that 3D interaction has not reached a level that meets real-world task requirements. Most interaction techniques pay little attention to the application contexts. When designers assemble these techniques to develop an interactive system, the interfaces often have very simple and not highly useful UIs. In this work, we describe a domain-specific design approach (DSD) that utilizes pervasive and accurate domain knowledge for interaction design. The purpose of this dissertation is to study the effects of domain knowledge on interaction design. The DSD approach uses a three-level interaction design framework to represents a continuous design space of interaction. The framework has generative power to suggest alternative interaction techniques. We choose the AEC domain as the subject of study. Cloning and object manipulation for massing study are the two example tasks to provide practical and empirical evidences for applying the DSD. This dissertation presents several important results of the knowledge use in the DSD approach. First, the DSD approach provides a theoretical foundation for designing 3D interaction. Techniques produced using DSD result in more useful real-world applications, at least in the domain of AEC. Second, the three-level interaction design framework forms a continuum of design and expands our understanding of 3D interaction design to a level that addresses real-world use. Third, this research proposes an integrated system design approach that integrates DSD and the usability engineering process. Fourth, this work produces a large set of empirical results and observations that demonstrate the effectiveness of domain-knowledge use in designing interaction techniques and applications. Finally, we apply domain-specific interaction techniques to real world applications and create a fairly complex application with improved usefulness. / Ph. D.

Secure digital documents using Steganography and QR Code

Hassanein, Mohamed Sameh January 2014 (has links)
With the increasing use of the Internet several problems have arisen regarding the processing of electronic documents. These include content filtering, content retrieval/search. Moreover, document security has taken a centre stage including copyright protection, broadcast monitoring etc. There is an acute need of an effective tool which can find the identity, location and the time when the document was created so that it can be determined whether or not the contents of the document were tampered with after creation. Owing the sensitivity of the large amounts of data which is processed on a daily basis, verifying the authenticity and integrity of a document is more important now than it ever was. Unsurprisingly document authenticity verification has become the centre of attention in the world of research. Consequently, this research is concerned with creating a tool which deals with the above problem. This research proposes the use of a Quick Response Code as a message carrier for Text Key-print. The Text Key-print is a novel method which employs the basic element of the language (i.e. Characters of the alphabet) in order to achieve authenticity of electronic documents through the transformation of its physical structure into a logical structured relationship. The resultant dimensional matrix is then converted into a binary stream and encapsulated with a serial number or URL inside a Quick response Code (QR code) to form a digital fingerprint mark. For hiding a QR code, two image steganography techniques were developed based upon the spatial and the transform domains. In the spatial domain, three methods were proposed and implemented based on the least significant bit insertion technique and the use of pseudorandom number generator to scatter the message into a set of arbitrary pixels. These methods utilise the three colour channels in the images based on the RGB model based in order to embed one, two or three bits per the eight bit channel which results in three different hiding capacities. The second technique is an adaptive approach in transforming domain where a threshold value is calculated under a predefined location for embedding in order to identify the embedding strength of the embedding technique. The quality of the generated stego images was evaluated using both objective (PSNR) and Subjective (DSCQS) methods to ensure the reliability of our proposed methods. The experimental results revealed that PSNR is not a strong indicator of the perceived stego image quality, but not a bad interpreter also of the actual quality of stego images. Since the visual difference between the cover and the stego image must be absolutely imperceptible to the human visual system, it was logically convenient to ask human observers with different qualifications and experience in the field of image processing to evaluate the perceived quality of the cover and the stego image. Thus, the subjective responses were analysed using statistical measurements to describe the distribution of the scores given by the assessors. Thus, the proposed scheme presents an alternative approach to protect digital documents rather than the traditional techniques of digital signature and watermarking.

Utvärdera Informationssystem : Pragmatiskt perspektiv och metod / Evaluating Information Systems : Pragmatic perspective and method

Lagsten, Jenny January 2009 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose of the study is to develop an evaluation method forevaluating information systems based on the stakeholder model for evaluation. The method is called VISU (Swedish acronym for IS evaluation for workpracticedevelopment). In VISU, the evaluation process is recognised as a social processwhere people are working together in order to determine the qualities and valuesof the IS under evaluation. The point of departure is that evaluation is to be usedby people in order to make change and betterment. Questions: Two questionshave guided the study: 1) How should a method for evaluation of informationsystems be designed in order to contribute to the development of an organisation? and 2) What is the significance of a pragmatic grounded evaluation model? and 2) What is the significance of a pragmatic grounded evaluation model? Method: The research process has been conducted according to Canonical ActionResearch. The Action Research strategy has been chosen in order to satisfy theresearch needs when doing method development – the need to try the method outin non trivial situations. Further, VISU is grounded in pragmatic knowledgetheories, evaluation theories (stakeholder model) and IS evaluation theories andanchored in the school of interpretive IS evaluation. Contribution: The practicalcontribution from the study is VISU, a method for evaluation informationsystems. The theoretical contributions are rationality for pragmatic IS evaluation,a multiparadigm model for IS evaluation and a model for evaluation use.

The use of agricultural systems that consider the spatial dimension attributed by the use of Geographic Information (GI) brings benefits to agriculture. Applications that use GI face usability difficulties due to the expansion of its use, growth in the amount of geographic data, the advent of the Internet, diversity and increase in the number of users. Among the research needs related to agricultural systems is the development of an evaluation method that considers the specificities of the geographic information. In order to solve the problem, this work presents the UsaGeo, method for usability evaluation in agricultural systems. The method presents quantitative and qualitative results, requires a specialist in usability and accessibility for its execution and consists of four phases. UsaGeo was applied in four case studies and it was found that it identified problems related to the geographical information that would be difficult to be detected by methods recurrently cited in the literature. The application of UsaGeo in agriculture allows the creation of software products with greater usability, increases the rate of adoption of these systems by farmers, increases productivity for the sector and generates an increase in the expansion and exploitation of the use of geographical information..

Hentschel, Christian, Kunze, Thomas, Spanner-Ulmer, Birgit 25 April 2012 (has links) (PDF)

This work analyzes the quality of indoor environments of serial homes built in horizontal closed condominiums in Cuiaba, Mato Grosso State, between the years 2000 and 2010. The production, in focus, corresponds to housing for the people of the middle and upper social classes. For this procedure, adapted some national and international methods of housing quality assessment, with its appropriate corrections and conformations mainly Mato Grosso and Brazilian realities. The eleven indicators established were given a balancing test, in order to simplify the score of the sample universe. The result achieved confirms the identification of projects with higher and lower quality, provided for different spatial arrangements offered and areas. Of the 37 types analyzed, only four, 10.81 %, hadn’t a concept considered critical. This result shows that the quality of projects and the Brazilian building industry still leaves much to be desired, even when intended to higher economic and social classes. And yet, inadequate space arrangement may compromise the quality of the project regardless of the area. The development obtained through this method gives to this work an increasingly remarkable degree of importance as an inducer of a procedure capable of establishing criteria for design and housing product quality. It is expected that this research contribute to a better design, analysis and evaluation of isolated dwellings, apartment buildings and residential complexes and not only for housings in horizontal closed condominiums.

Värderingars tillförlitlighet Värderingars tillförlitlighet / Reliability of Evaluations – An analysis of evaluation methods and internal contra external evaluation.

Fors, Sebastian January 2014 (has links)
This paper deals with public Swedish property companies way of evaluating their property portfolio. Both when it comes to the valuation method and the type of the evaluation (rate of internal contra external). Further, factors behind these choices and how the evaluation have changed over a shorter time period. The thesis combines analysis of financial reports combined with qualitative interviews with some of the most respected and exalted people of the real estate world. The analysis shows that a majority of the property companies uses a high rate of external evaluation together with a yield method. Also a change in the ratio of internal and external evaluation during the last four years is found and reflected upon. In the interviews the correctness and reliability of internal and external evaluations are compared from two very different perspectives. Problems and differences between theory and practice are brought up here as well.

En processbeskrivning för utveckling av webbaserade system och gränssnitt : En fallstudie av utvecklingsprocesser på GMP-Systems AB / A process-description for development of web-based systems and interface : A case study of development processes at GMP-Systems AB

Ibrahim, Goran, Ek, Leonard January 2017 (has links)
Business systems lacking a clear interface and subsequently a diminished usability, can lead to limited usage or no usage of parts of the system. It may therefore be critical to have a process outlined for the development of such system and its interface to ensure that all parts of the system are used.   The objective of this case study was to investigate whether it is possible to develop a process description for IT projects at the initial stages of the development phase of a new interface in a system. More specifically, the question investigated in this report follows:  “How should a development method or development process for IT systems look to seize scientific, theoretical and technical aspects of Human Computer Interaction (HCI)?” A case study of the project was carried out at the company GMP-Systems AB. A literature-study on aspects of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) was carried out to arrive at a result and answer the question. Further, an analysis was conducted to consider whether the technical implementation of such process can be accomplished by adopting frameworks. In addition, interviews were conducted with users that have interacted with the system, and an analysis was carried out on the feedback provided to develop prototypes for the system. A development method and process description linked to the literature and the experience gained from the projects case study is outlined in the result section. To the client, GMP-Systems, a prototype, a use-case model[1] with user-stories[2] and a sequential diagram[3] will be delivered.  Keywords: HCI, evaluation method, Angular JS, Knockout JS, React, Moqups, process description, development method. [1] Use-Case model is a description of actions that a user can perform and defines the interaction between the roles of a system to accomplish a goal[2] User stories are a tool in system development to provide a description of the desired functionality, often from an end user perspective.[3] A sequential diagram shows how objects operate with one another and in what order.

Towards an understanding of OSS ecosystem health : Health characteristics and the benefits and barriers of their digital evaluation tools / Mot en förståelse av OSS ekosystemhälsa : Hälsoegenskaper och fördelarna och hindren med deras digitala utvärderingsverktyg

Ozaeta-Arce, Alexander January 2020 (has links)
In order for the collaborations to be fruitful and sustainable between organisations and open source software (OSS) ecosystems, maintainers need to understand if, and how it is possible to evaluate OSS ecosystem health in an effective manner. Understanding how OSS maintainers characterise ecosystem health and how they evaluate these health characteristics using digital evaluation tools is interesting to analyse since it could give insight in how ecosystem health in practice is evaluated, which health aspects can be evaluated with the help of digital tools, and what barriers exists in the evaluation processes. This qualitative study is based on semi-structured interviews and was conducted in order to answer two research questions regarding this topic. The answers which were produced by the semi-structured interviews were transcribed and coded to later be analysed where conclusions could be drawn. The research attempts to broaden the academic perspective on how ecosystem maintainers view health and how health evaluation digital tools can help maintainers understand the state of their ecosystem health, and what barriers exist. It became clear during the research that answering how ecosystem health is to be characterized is incredibly difficult since the answer might differ in many ways depending on the nature of the project, where the project is in its life cycle, and who is asking the questions. Two views surrounding the definition of ecosystem health are presented, one revolving around longevity and the other revolving around an ecosystem life cycle perspective. Furthermore, Diversity, Governance, Activity and Licensing seem to be the health characteristics maintainers find to be the most important for ecosystem health evaluation. Out of these, tools such as the ones offered by CHAOSS, seem somewhat geared towards assessing Activity, Licensing and Diversity. Saving time and finding trends when evaluating health are examples of how tools help maintainers however, barriers exist for maintainers in smaller or younger projects who have not practiced health evaluation for a very long time. Finally, another barrier is the amount of additional context and human judgment which is needed when using tools for the health evaluation.

Evaluation of user experience on a mobile application : A study conducted on the mobile application provided by Shownight

Chan, Fanny, Johansson, Sofia January 2016 (has links)
As the use of Smartphones has increased, the number of mobile applications has grown at an exponential rate. The increasingly higher number of mobile applications has led to a higher demand of studying human-computer interaction within mobile applications. Human-computer interaction (HCI) is the study of how people more efficiently can interact with a system. One field of study within HCI is user experience (UX), which studies how well a user perceives the use of a system in terms of pleasure, affect, aesthetics and fun. Another field within HCI is usability, which measure how well a user can interact with or use a system. The purpose of this thesis was to create design improvements to increase the user experience in Shownight’s mobile application. The design improvements were based on a performed evaluation that was defined with help of an initial literature study and consisted of semi-structured interviews in combination with performance measurements and was performed on five participants. Based on the evaluation and literature study, the design improvements for the mobile application could be defined. The design improvements were defined in line with the functions in the head menu: news feed, grid view, search function, event calendar and personal information. The expectation of implementing the design improvements is that the mobile application’s design becomes more intuitive and easy to use and thus, increases the user experience. I denna studie utvärderade fem personer mobilapplikationen.
