Orientação espacial e características urbanas

Locatelli, Luciana January 2007 (has links)
This research investigates the influence of the physic-spatial variables associated to orientation in urban spaces, from the perception of groups that differ in gender and degree of familiarity to the space. The central purpose is to provide theoretic knowledge that can suppose urban design guidelines, thus guaranteeing greater easiness at wayfinding in urban spaces, as well as contributing for a higher quality urban atmosphere. It is adopted as study object the city of Santa Maria (RS) for constituting, mainly, an area where the individuals' concentration with different levels of familiarity with the space is significant. Likewise, for containing heterogeneous spaces in terms of the variables associated to the physic-spatial aspects that render the comparison among them pertinent. The collecting methods and analyses of data are part of those used in the field of the research of the Environment and Behavior. The data were obtained through two stages: (1) field survey, interviews and mental maps, and (2) physical survey, questionnaire and mental maps, preceded by a task involving wayfinding, which means the accomplishment of a course Downtown. The results of this investigation show that there are quite evident relations between the easiness of orientation levels and the physic-spatial variables associated to the urban features of the spaces. Initially, it is evident that the presence of marks contributes positively to facilitate the spatial orientation. For certain spaces, the presence of signage also tends to explain the levels of orientation easiness. Moreover, the results reveal that the syntactic measures, such as integration levels, Relative Asymmetry, Real Relative Asymmetry and intelligibility, are considered important for the analyses of navigation in the urban space. It is expected that the found data rouse the interest on the development of other studies about the relationship between spatial orientation and urban characteristics.

Qualidade estética e policromia de centros históricos

Naoumova, Natalia January 2009 (has links)
In this study, a perception of a set of buildings in historical centers was studied based on approach of the Environmental Perception. The research was focused on investigation of the factors related to chromatic issues, which affect an esthetic evaluation of the constructions of different styles, and it was performed through the study of the specific sites. For this purpose, four cities of the Rio Grande do Sul state of Brazil were selected - Pelotas, Piratini, Jaguarão and Bagé -, which contain representative sets of the heritage buildings of the three styles (colonial, eclectic and pre-modern). To create the basis for the color study, the concept of the chromatic typology of historical style was defined and used to identify the models with specific chromatic attributes (corresponding to the schemes of historic and non-historic colors) that represented the main object of the investigation. The three groups of stylistic models were presented for evaluation by respondents, residents of the above four cities, familiar and unfamiliar with the specific stylistic contexts. At the first stage of the research, respondents' evaluations of historical buildings were analyzed, and then, at the second stage, their evaluations of chromatic models were treated. The following suppositions were worked out: (i) the perception of esthetic quality of the urban environment is related to the color perception, and (ii) the polychromy is a relevant feature for evaluation of the stylistic buildings in the historical centers. The obtained results allowed us to reach the conclusions about the importance of polychromy for esthetic quality of the historical environments. The polychromy significance was verified through formal and symbolic variables related to chromatic models of different styles. In particular, the following chromatic characteristics - chromatic component, structure type and complexity of color composition - were specified to differentiate the model attributes, which provide a positive evaluation and, in this way, contribute to formation of esthetically qualified environments in historical areas. This research made available a theoretical and methodological basis for study of colors in historical environments involving the use of the esthetic approach adopted in the Environmental Perception, which could be useful as reinforcement for analysis of the esthetic potential of an historical center, emphasizing the formal and symbolic aspects through the chromatic one. This contribution could be helpful for developing the directives and propositions of chromatic intervention in the urban historical sites.

Functional Investigations into the Recognition Memory Network, its Association with Genetic Polymorphisms and Implications for Disorders of Emotional Memory

Dörfel, Denise 22 January 2010 (has links)
Recent research, that has been focused on recognition memory, has revealed that two processes contribute to recognition of previously encountered items: recollection and familiarity (Aggleton & Brown, 1999; Eichenbaum, 2006; Eichenbaum, Yonelinas, & Ranganath, 2007; Rugg & Yonelinas, 2003; Skinner & Fernandes, 2007; Squire, Stark, & Clark, 2004; Wixted, 2007a; Yonelinas, 2001a; Yonelinas, 2002). The findings of neural correlates of recollection and familiarity lead to the assumption that there are different brain regions activated in either process, but there are, to the best of my knowledge, no studies assessing how these brain regions are working together in a recollection or a familiarity network, respectively. Additionally, there are almost no studies to date, which directly searched for overlapping regions. Therefore, in study I of the current thesis, brain regions associated to both recognition processes are searched investigated. Additionally, a connectivity analysis will search for functional correlated brain activations that either build a recollection or a familiarity network. It is undoubtable that the Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is strongly involved in synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus (Bramham & Messaoudi, 2005) and there is evidence that a genetic variant of this neurotrophin (BDNF 66Met) is related to poorer memory performance (Egan, et al., 2003). Therefore, in study II of the current thesis, the effect of BDNF Val66Met on recollection and familiarity performance and related brain activations is investigated. Finally, one could summarize, that serotonin, like BDNF, is strongly involved in brain development and plasticity as well as in learning and memory processes (Vizi, 2008). More precisely, there is evidence for alterations in the structure of brain regions, which are known to be involved in emotional memory formation and retrieval, like amygdala and hippocampus (Frodl, et al., 2008; Munafo, Brown, & Hariri, 2008; Pezawas, et al., 2005). One study found an slight epistatic effect of BDNF and 5-HTTLPR on the grey matter volume of the amygdala (Pezawas, et al., 2008). Therefore, in study III, it is investigated if such an interaction effect could be substantiated for the amygdala and additionally revealed for the hippocampus. The results of the current thesis allow further comprehension of recollection, hence episodic memory, and point to a special role of the BDNF in temporal and prefrontal brain regions. Additionally, the finding of an epistatic effect between BDNF and serotonin transporter function point to the need of analyzing interactions between genes and also between genes and environmental factors which reveals more information than the study of main effects alone. In conclusion, analyzing behavioral and neural correlates of episodic memory reveal allowed insights in brain functions that may serve as guideline for future studies in clinical populations with memory deficits, including susceptibility factors such as good or bad environment, as well as promising gene variants that influence episodic memory.

Visual cortical circuit dynamics in health and disease

Yu Tang (12441534) 21 April 2022 (has links)
<p>My thesis revolves around neuronal circuit dynamics in health and disease. The first part of the thesis characterized cross-regional synchrony within the visual cortical network following visual perceptual experience in healthy mice. This work for the first time described inter-areal 4-8 Hz superficial layer LFP synchrony across mouse visual cortical regions persisting beyond visual stimulation time window, and revealed that the synchrony was expressed specifically between V1 and the higher-order visual area (HVA) with functional preference matching the entrained spatial frequency (SF) and temporal frequency (TF) content, in mice. The discovery of visual familiarity induced inter-areal 4-8 Hz synchrony extends the previous discovery of the 4-8 Hz oscillation in V1 after visual experience from our lab (Kissinger et al., 2018; Kissinger et al., 2020; Gao et al., 2021), and provided the first pivotal evidence supporting the role of 4-8 Hz oscillation in mediating cross-regional communication. Such 4-8 Hz visual cortical network synchrony has been mostly reported in primate studies in contexts of visual attention and working memory (Liebe et al., 2012; Spyropoulos et al., 2018), while our study extended the visual cortical network synchrony research scope to mouse models and in a new context of visual familiarity. The work is a key step for starting cortical network studies in mice, and for starting predictive coding theory study in the context of oscillations in mouse cortical network in the future. Additionally, unit spiking was more strongly modulated by 4-8 Hz oscillations in V1 and HVAs after visual experience. The visually-locked responsive units in V1 and HVAs exihibted either increased or decreased inter-areal spiking synchrony, while most post-stimulus responsive units in V1 and HVA exhibited higher spiking synchrony. </p> <p>The other parts of my dissertation looked at V1 activity in disease and following a novel CNS therapy. One project looked at recovery of visually evoked response in mouse V1 after ischemia through NeuroD1 mediated astrocyte-to-neuron conversion, where we characterized the formation of cortical laminated structure from the converted neurons, longitudinal recovery of visually evoked responses of unit populations in V1, and units’ selective responses to orientations. Another project looked at altered visual cortical activity in an Auxilin knockout mouse model, which demonstrated overall reduced visually evoked responses, less selective responses to orientations, impaired visual adaptive responses and mismatch responses, as well as slower visual experience induced oscillations. These projects utilized the high-density silicon probe recording technique to 1) characterize visual cortical function recovery following a therapy, which provided evidence for its high efficacy for recovering physiological functions, and to 2) phenotype visual cortical functional impairments in a mouse disease model, which provided more basic understanding in visual cortical physiology of Auxilin related disease.</p> <p>In sum, my dissertation work took advantage of the high-density silicon probe recording technique to probe neuronal circuits in health and disease. The discovery of visual experience induced inter-areal 4-8 Hz synchrony paves the way for studying 4-8 Hz activity in relation to stream-dependent visual processing and predictive coding in health and disease.</p>

Lundbrant, Sarah, Fält, Tove January 2020 (has links)
Background: In Sweden, there is a great interest in private fund savings. The major banks in Sweden offer several funds and constitute the majority of the Swedish fund market. Fund managers' goal with an active fund is to generate a higher return compared to its benchmark index, but previous research has shown that active funds rarely outperform the benchmark index. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate why individuals retain fund holdings in the Swedish major banks’ active funds, although previous studies show that these funds often have higher fees, but not better returns than for example index funds. Methodology: Hypothesis testing has been applied with a quantitative approach derived from existing theory. Empirical primary data has been collected with a physical survey answered by 174 students at Linköping University. In this study, a non-probability sample with a convenience sample has been used. Bivariate and multivariate analysis of the study's empirical data was conducted with logistic regression analysis. Results: The null hypothesis is rejected for the independent variable switching costs (p &lt;0.1). For the independent variables financial knowledge and familiarity bias, the null hypothesis is rejected for the time being (p &lt;0.1). The result of the beta coefficient's direction is negative for switching costs regarding fees and other financial costs, but positive for relationship costs, financial subjective and objective knowledge, and familiarity bias. Conclusions: The independent variables, which might explain why private individuals in this study's sample retain fund holdings in the Swedish major banks' active funds, are switching costs, financial knowledge, and familiarity bias. The results of this study generate a knowledge contribution which might increase customer mobility in the fund market.

Students’ Perception of Cyber Threat Severity : Investigating Alignment with Actual Risk Levels

Erfani Torbaghani, Ramtin January 2023 (has links)
This study aims to investigate the alignment between students’ perception of cyber threats and their actual risk levels. A mixed-method approach was used, where data was collected from Swedish university students through questionnaires, capturing their perception, familiarity, experience, and protective behaviors. Information regarding the actual risk levels of cyber attacks was obtained from interviews with cyber security professionals and other expert sources, such as cyber security reports. The results showed that students perceive malware, ransomware, phishing, and insecure passwords as the most dangerous threats to society, while denial of service (DoS) attacks and packet sniffing were considered less severe. These findings align somewhat with the suggested threat levels. However, notable proportions of students perceived these threats as moderately dangerous or less severe, suggesting room for improvement in their understanding. The results also showed that protective behaviors among students are generally low, particularly in regards to IoT security. Future work should therefore explore the public’s perception, protective behavior and knowledge of IoT security, but also attacks that are common against such devices.

Plante-Hébert, Julien 08 1900 (has links)
The present study deals with the effects of familiarity on speaker identification in the context of voice line-ups. The voice line-up is a paralegal technique, inspired by a visual identification procedure. The voice line-up consists in presenting a number of voices sharing similar acoustic parameters as specified in established procedures. The main objective was to determine if the familiarity of a voice could lead to a high rate of correct identification (> 99 %). Our study is the first to quantify the familiarity criterion linking an identifier and a « target voice ». The quantification was based on four parameters bearing on the degree of contact between individuals: recency, frenquency, duration, and the period during which the contact occurred. Three different voice line-ups were elaborated, each containing 10 voices, including one target voice which was well known by the identifier according to a questionnaire that served to quantify familiarity. Participants (identifiers, n = 44) were selected on the basis of their familiarity with the target voice. The speakers used in the voice line-ups were native speakers of Quebec French and all presented voices had similar fundamental frequencies (to within one semitone). In each line-up we used utterances of 4 different lengths (1, 4, 10, and 18 syll.). The results show that by controlling the familiarity criterion, a correct identification rate of a 100 % is obtained with an exact error probability of p < 1 x 10-12.These rates are superior to current automatic systems of voice identification.

Neural and behavioral interactions in the processing of speech and speaker information

Kreitewolf, Jens 10 July 2015 (has links)
During natural conversation, we send rich acoustic signals that do not only determine the content of conversation but also provide a wealth of information about the person speaking. Traditionally, the question of how we understand speech has been studied separately from the question of how we recognize the person speaking either implicitly or explicitly assuming that speech and speaker recognition are two independent processes. Recent studies, however, suggest integration in the processing of speech and speaker information. In this thesis, I provide further empirical evidence that processes involved in the analysis of speech and speaker information interact on the neural and behavioral level. In Study 1, I present data from an experiment which used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the neural basis for speech recognition under varying speaker conditions. The results of this study suggest a neural mechanism that exploits functional interactions between speech- and speaker-sensitive areas in left and right hemispheres to allow for robust speech recognition in the context of speaker variations. This mechanism assumes that speech recognition, including the recognition of linguistic prosody, predominantly involves areas in the left hemisphere. In Study 2, I present two fMRI experiments that investigated the hemispheric lateralization of linguistic prosody recognition in comparison to the recognition of the speech message and speaker identity, respectively. The results showed a clear left-lateralization when recognition of linguistic prosody was compared to speaker recognition. Study 3 investigated under which conditions listeners benefit from prior exposure to a speaker''s voice in speech recognition. The results suggest that listeners implicitly learn acoustic speaker information during a speech task and use such information to improve comprehension of speech in noise.

New heroines of the diaspora : reading gender identity in South Asian diasporic fiction

Banerjee, Lopa 06 1900 (has links)
This thesis looks at literature by two South Asian, diasporic writers, Jhumpa Lahiri and Monica Ali, as a space where creative, cross-cultural and independent identities for diasporic women might be created. The central claim of the thesis is that diasporic migration affects South Asian women in particular ways. The most positive outcome is that these women adopt new trans-border identities but that these remain shaped by class, culture and gender. Hence a working class milieu such as the one depicted by Monica Ali, leads to an immigrant, ghetto-ised, community-based identity, located solely in the land of adoption, with return or travel to the homeland no longer possible. However, the milieu imagined in Jhumpa Lahiri’s text, a middle-class, suburban environment, creates a solitary, transnational identity, lived between countries, where travel between the land of birth and the land of adoption remains accessible. / English / M.A. (English)
