Schierbeck, Ella January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to examine if one can find a change within the genre job advertisements for communicators, and in extension, the profession as a whole, during the time period 1997-2017. By studying the schematic structures of job advertisements as a genre text at large, and specifically the rhetoric strategies used when presenting requirements, I will be attempting to answer these questions through a genre analysis. The material consists of 24 job advertisements in total, 8 from each year of 1997, 2007 and 2017. The texts from 1997 have been acquired by searching through the job section of the Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter, from issues published from October to December 1997. However, the material from 2007 and 2017 both come from the Swedish Public Employment Service, Arbetsförmedlingen. To find texts from 2007 the archive at the Swedish Public Employment Service had to be advised, seeing as they are no longer posted on their website. All the job advertisements from 2017 however have been found and downloaded from the website.                       Theoretically this study mainly lies on Vijay K Bhatias genre analysis, and his methodology when analyzing genres and their communicative purpose as well as their schematic structure. The analysis goes on to analyze the rhetoric strategies used within the job advertisements requirements-section, then using systemic-functional grammar (SFG) to make clear the linguistic configuration. The results of the analysis show that both change and stability within the genre can be found. Regarding the changes, the schematic structures, in regards to content, becomes larger. Both regarding the number of moves in total and the number of different moves used. In addition, the analysis tells us that the ideal applicant in 2017 is an independent communicator who has a talent for networking and connecting with new people, in contrast to the communicator in 1997, who primarily is a good writer with an ability to work together.

English in Swedish product packages : An exploratory study of how English is used in product packages sold in the dairy section in Swedish retail

Bohm Fiederling, Inga-Lena January 2014 (has links)
This study explores the use of English in the texts of product packages sold in Swedish retail. This includes looking at the proportion of English of the packages of four brands God Morgon, Froosh, Oatly and Wellness, as well as exploring what moves are most likely to be in English and furthermore, what cultural values are conveyed by the texts. The most significant findings are that the proportion of English varies among both between and within the brands, depending on the specific niche the products have. Furthermore, in line with previous studies, English is mainly found in the attention-grabbing moves such as headlines and leads, whereas Swedish is more frequent in the copy which serves a more explanatory and detailing function. This is true except for the texts of the brand Oatly, with the main copy also in English. The cultural values conveyed by the texts, finally, both support previous findings, but it may be suggested that some of the values, such as nature and morality, have just recently begun to be associated to English.

Graecum est, non legitur : Främmandegöringens och genrens didaktiska potential i Umberto Ecos Rosens namn / Graecum est, non legitur : The didactic potential of defamiliarisation and genre in Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose

Bjälvegård, David January 2023 (has links)
The aim of the paper is to examine what didactic potential may exist in Umberto Eco’s novel The Name of the Rose (1980) in the education of the Swedish language for the upper secondary school. It is approached from a literary scientific angle and is in part about how pupils can learn how to manage the uniqueness of the literary texts and in part how pupils can use genre theory to understand the novel. To explore the first subject Viktor Shklovsky’s theories about automatism, defamiliarisation and roughened form are used. The other subject is mainly studied with Tzvetan Todorov’s article “The Typology of Detective Fiction” as a starting point. It is deduced that the didactic potential of the novel is great if the pupils are given good guidance. The novel’s extensive use of Latin and other foreign languages is an asset when using Shklovsky’s theories, because there is a lot of room for interpretation and reflection. The genre analysis too has great didactic potential because the The Name of the Rose relates to suspense novels in both typical and atypical ways.

Chat phases, disagreements and claim backing in simulated sales negotiations : an applied linguistics perspective

Van Huyssteen, Matthys Petrus 09 1900 (has links)
This study compared simulated sales negotiations with authentic negotiations. Specifically, three areas of language were considered: (i) chat phases, (ii) mitigation in disagreements, and (iii) argumentation. Findings indicated that greatly reduced use of chat phases in the simulations led to an impoverishment of the interactional aspect of communication. A statistical analysis indicated that mitigation of disagreements was significantly reduced when compared to authentic negotiations. Finally, in spite of the difference noted between professional and non-professional negotiators in the simulated negotiations, a significant increase in the use of argumentation was found in the simulations. Even though further research would be required, it could be hypothesized that these differences may be attributed to the one-off nature of simulations, the absence of a surrounding business context and the intrinsic difficulty of using interactional language in simulations. These factors should be considered when simulations are used and designed for business and LSP training courses. / Linguistics and Modern Languages / M.A. (Linguistics)

Kontrastivna analiza žanra u tekstovima o klasičnoj muzici na engleskom i srpskom jeziku / Contrastive Genre Analysis of Texts onTI Classical Music in English and Serbian

Kovačević Darko 22 September 2016 (has links)
Rezultati dobijeni u ovom radu mogu naći primjenu u četiri različita područja: u lingvističkim teorijama iz oblasti analize žanra i kontrastivne analize, pri upotrebi i kreiranju tekstova o klasičnoj muzici u okviru diskursne zajednice profesionalnih muzičara, prevođenju tekstova o klasičnoj muzici sa engleskog jezika na srpski i obrnuto i u nastavi engleskog jezika struke na visokoobrazovnim institucijama iz oblasti muzičke umjetnosti.</p> / <p>The aim of the paper was to perform a contrastive<br />AB genre analysis of texts on classical music in English and Serbian which would enable the presentation of key linguistic similarities and differences which exist between them. Within the analysis, the genre of texts on classical music was observed and presented through different aspects, and a comprehensive linguistic analysis of texts from the genre was performed as well, separately for texts in English and the ones in Serbian. After that, a contrastive analysis was performed, and by means of it the results obtained by the genre analysis were viewed comparatively. The results obtained in this paper introduce the genre of texts on classical music in the literature dedicated to genre analysis and contrastive analysis and can be applied in four different areas: linguistic theories dedicated to genre analysis and contrastive analysis, use and creation of texts on classical music within the discourse community of professional musicians, translation of texts on classical music from English to Serbian and vice<br />versa and ESP teaching at highe</p>

The theoretical and methodological basis comes from the combination of Corpus Linguistics (cf. Berber Sardinha, 2004) with Genre Analysis (cf. Bhatia, 1993). We investigate what is implied in the legislative provision contained in article 33, 3, of the Viena Convention on the Law of Treaties, done on May 23, 1969, i.e.: The terms of the treaty are presumed to have the same meaning in each authentic text . Our corpus of study is composed of texts of multilateral treaties written in four languages: Portuguese, English, Spanish, and French. Since we highlight the importance of identifying elements which allow us to describe what is understood as same meaning of the terms employed in treaties: 1) we focus the communicative purpose of conduct prescriptions; 2) we adopt the main text (i.e., the body of articles) as a representative exemplar of the treaty concerned, as it is the part traditionally reserved to conduct prescriptions in the internal segmentation of this genre; and 3) we analyze the uniformity and variation of linguistic elements: a) in the designation of the subject whose conduct is at stake; and b) in verbal combinations which delimit the action prescribed to this subject. We combine in a situated manner the tools of Corpus Linguistics. We use the classic software WordSmith Tools in the first stage, aiming to identify a term designating an International Law subject in order to select the legislative provisions to be analyzed. Subsequently, we use the software Multialigner, developed in partnership with our research tutor, to align the segments of the treaties written in four languages and select the sentences containing the search word(s) nominated. Afterwards, we use the software Multi-Systemic Coder 4.68 to tag the linguistic elements concerned. And to finish, we use the computational script Getcodings, developed by our research tutor in order to extract from Systemic Coder 4.68 the linguistic data processed. That is the fountain of statistical data on linguistic uniformity and variation they are here regarded under a qualiquantitative perspective which represents the routes of contemporary Applied Linguistics / Esta pesquisa almeja proporcionar novos subsídios para o estudo da uniformidade e variação linguísticas em tratados internacionais multilaterais.

Sovětská filmová komedie konce 60. a 70. let / Soviet Film Comedy of the Late 60's and the 70's

Něudačina, Natalija January 2019 (has links)
The subject of this thesis is a genre analysis of Soviet film comedies of the late 60s and the 70s that is based on the reception and production history data. The aim of this research is to grasp this type of comedy as a specific political and socially-cultural phenomenon of the Eastern bloc and its relation to Soviet popular culture. A methodology of the genre analysis will derive from Rick Altman's semantic-syntactic approach, which will allow us to describe the chosen genre group as a complex genre trend set in the unique social, cultural, economic and in this particular case also ideological context, to follow the development and fluidity of the genre trend, as well as to find and to compare mutual attributes of the chosen films. The analysis will not be based solely on the group of the most watched films, but also on the production data focusing mostly on the films' budget, as well as dramaturgic supervision and censorship. Another part of the diploma thesis will be based on the gathered reception data such as contemporary media response and viewer ratings, focusing on the important role that Soviet film comedies played in the period and partially continue to play in the present-day Russian popular culture. Fusion of all analytic parts shall bring us to the basic definition of the Soviet film...

Toreheim, Mimmi January 2011 (has links)
This paper addresses the question about what role typography plays in the interpretation of a text. From three different handbooks in typography arguments are gathered and categorized in to three categories: roman types, san serif and others. Interviews with people from the graphic design area are also a part of the paper and are accounted for in the discussion part of the paper. Areas of theory are a broad hermeneutic view based on Hans-Georg Gadamers thoughts, which have sub categories such as: Michel Foucault’s theory about discourses, John Swales genre theory and Anders Björkvall’s thoughts on typography and multi-modal texts. The result of the paper is that all typography, even the one often called the invisible typography, is interpreted by the reader who gathers it’s pre-knowledge from genre, history, culture and discourses. This means that typography plays an important role in the interpretation of a text. Key words: typography, interpretation, hermeneutic, Hans- Georg Gadamer, discourse, Michel Foucault, genre analysis, John Swales, Multi- modal, Anders Björkvall, semiotic. Nyckelord: typografi, tolkning, hermeneutik, Hans-Georg Gadamer, diskurs, Michel Foucault, genreanalys, Johan Swales, multimodalitet, Anders Björkvall, semiotik.
