The reception of Cyprian of Carthage in early medieval Europe

Leontidou, Eleni January 2017 (has links)
This doctoral thesis deals with the transmission and reception of the works of Cyprian of Carthage in the early Middle Ages. The process of research combined the study of the manuscript transmission of Cyprian’s works with the study of texts that were (in an immediate way or not) influenced by these writings. The connections between the transmission of Cyprian’s writings and the publishing activities of various groups, from the Donatists in fourth-century North Africa to Carolingian priests, is a central part of the thesis. The appropriation of the Church Father by different groups, including Arian writers in the aftermath the Council of Aquileia, proves not only the sense of authority Cyprian’s works invoked but also the, often liberal, way in which ancient works were used or interpreted. In addition, Cyprian was the first Latin Church Father to connect the concept of the unity of the Church with the office of the bishop. He was therefore influential in medieval ecclesiological thought and in the shaping of episcopal identities throughout the early Middle Ages. The thesis examined how Cyprian’s works functioned as tools of legitimisation for the causes of ninth-century bishops, such as Hincmar of Reims; invocations of priestly and episcopal identity, which were often based on Cyprian’s contribution to Catholic theology, enabled influential bishops to affirm their place in a Christian society as major players in ecclesiastical and secular politics.

Esra

Milbach-Schirr, Lillia 03 December 2021 (has links)
The study is focused on the relation of 4th, 5th and 6th Ezra. While the Apocalypse 4th Ezra as a reference text for New Testament writings is the subject of numerous studies, 5th and 6th Ezra are normally dismissed as Christian additions and are not understood in a meaningful relationship to 4th Ezra. Due to the fact that the Syriac tradition testifies 4th Ezra as an independent writing, it is often ignored, that the Latin tradition exclusively features 4th Ezra in the context of 5th and 6th Ezra. The study employs methodological approaches from the 361 Old Testament and Apocryphal research to investigate the relation between the three writings. Should it be regarded as a random compilation of writings or are there indications for a structural order or underlying concepts and motifs, which suggest an interrelated reading as a composed writing of 2nd Esdras? The study engages the subject with different approaches of research: first of all the medieval manuscripts representing the oldest complete sources for the writing of 2nd Esdras are evaluated. It is to be considered, that while all three writings are featured, the order of arrangement of the writings varies in the different traditions. In a synchronic exegetical analysis of the texts main themes and concepts are retraced and put in perspective to each other. Finally in a narratologic and dramatic point of view the plots and the arc of suspense of each writing is examined and considered in perspective of an underlying plot and understanding of 2nd Esdras as one story line. Especially in regard to the literary character of Ezra the different arrangements of the text emphasize different theological aspects of the character. The figure of Ezra itself becomes a projection space for the intentions of the later recipients. Therefore each arrangement of the writings can be regarded as a deliberate and meaningful expression of the theological concept of the recipients.

Production et réception des manuscrits enluminés japonais des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles : le cas du « Récit de Bunshô » (Bunshô sôshi) / Production and reception of seventeenth and eighteenth Japanese illuminated manuscripts : the case of the "Tale of Bunshô" (Bunshô sôshi)

Mulard, Delphine 09 June 2017 (has links)
In the years between 1600 and 1750 AC, many anonymous illuminated handscrolls and manuscripts were produced in Japan, which are now collected under the name of Nara Ehon and Nara Emaki. Although they are very numerous, very few is known about them. This study is focused on those related to the tale of Bunshô (Bunshô sôshi) and proceeds in three steps.First, it examines the making process of these scrolls and manuscripts. Although the painters remained anonymous, a calligrapher's signature or the seal of a painting shop can sometimes be found. Calligrapher and painters could be working for several rival shops. Painting shops did not only sell painted scrolls or illuminated manuscripts, but worked the connections between the calligrapher and the painters as well. Then, our study reconsiders the place of illuminated scrolls and manuscripts in marriages' dowries, called yomeiri-bon. From what we know about marriages through historical sources and the surviving illuminated manuscripts, it can be stressed that very few manuscripts can be considered as yomeiri-bon.Finally, an analysis of Bunshô Sôshi's iconography throughout the years says a lot about how this tale was understood. As it tells about social ascension and how a saltmaker's daughter and an aristocrat lived a romance together, there is in this tale some problematic scenes, where the social scale is turned upside down. Also, specific compositions with an androgenic character (wakashu) as the hero are employed with more generic compositions echoing other stories as well. The present study represents a first extensive summary in French about those illuminated manuscripts.

« Cette femme était très belle… ». This woman was very beautiful... ». Bathsheba’s fortune in Literature and Arts

Achard, Madeleine 26 September 2018 (has links)
This thesis of French and comparative Literature aims at highlighting the way the biblical figure of Bathsheba was perceived, interpreted and depicted in Literature and Arts, from the biblical backgrounds to our days, throughout a selection of various works. Both diachronic and comparatist, our analysis is mainly based on the parallel view of texts and images. It also lies on the simultaneous analysis of literary works belonging to different times and languages, in order to enhance the traditions which progressively emerged and responded to one another throughout the centuries about a woman who, in a single lifetime, was the wife of Uriah, the lover and spouse of king David, the mother of his son Solomon and one of the most subversive ancestors of Jesus Christ.

Bibelauslegung im Spannungsfeld von Methodenvielfalt und Eindeutigkeitsbestreben - Dargestellt, Untersucht und Gewertet unter Zuhilfenahme der Wirkungsgeschichte von Lukas 10,25-37 = Bible interpretation between methodological pluralityand the clarity of the text - described, examined and assessed with reference to the history of interpretation of Luke 10:25-37 / Bible interpretation between methodological plurality and the clarity of the text - described, examined and assessed with reference to the history of nthe interpretation of Luke 10:25-37

Text in German / Taking the plurality of methods in Biblical studies as starting point this dissertation shows a way to coherent interpretation message. An analysis of the current state and its long history identifies characteristics preventing clear interpretation results as well as ways to work out coherent interpretation messages. It is accompanied by five interpretations of Luke 10:25-37. An interdisciplinary excursus examines the legal interpretation with its claim of clarity. Three levels of interpretation are considered as essential for an adequate process of interpretation: 1. Clarification of the literal meaning on the basis of a historical exegesis. The author calls for the interdisciplinary cooperation of the methods and introduces a synthesis of methods. 2. Consideration of the reception history of texts. Special attention is given to the authority of interpretation in the Roman Catholic Church. The author regards "interpretive communities" as an alternative option. 3. The Holy Spirit's influence on the process of interpretation. Also in post-modern times interpreters need to "inhabit" the biblical texts. / Biblical and Ancient studies / M.Th. (New Testament)

Die Entdeckung der Archaik – ein ungeschriebenes Kapitel Wissenschaftsgeschichte

Lange, Anja 26 May 2017 (has links)
Since the second half of the 20th century the interest grows in the classical archaeology in a science-historical employment of own field. If the works and biographies of single important researcher’s personalities stood first in the focus, the question soon stepped after the genesis of archaeological technologies or concepts beside this. In the classical archeology, as well as in the neighbouring disciplines old history and classics, some works originated subsequently to these questions. Mostly the science history of the archeology was treated generally or the classical archeology in particular, single treatises also deal with the epoch concepts Classical period or Hellenism. Only relatively few works pick out as a central theme science-historically the concepts “archaically” / “Archaic” and in this it is removed predominantly on more general cultural-historical aspects. A thorough investigation of the development of the multilayered concept Archaic in the classical archeology shows up to now a desiderat of the research. Hence, the gradual constriction of the concept “archaically” on a style concept for the early-greek pieces of art of the time of approx. 700 to 480 B. C. in the science discourse of the time as well as the adoption of the archaic monuments by the respective researchers is looked thoroughly. The investigation occurs against the backdrop of the sequential discovery and investigation of the archaic-greek art from the beginnings till the last third of the 19th century. Besides, the temporal relation of the formation of the style concept is demonstrated “archaically” in terms of “old”, “originally”, freely by a pejorative connotation and, finally, of the epoch concept and “epoch” means here not only a time period, but a chronologically outlined cultural step.

Välsignad förbannelse : En retorisk analys av bibliskt material i Black Metallyrik

Jonsäll, Hans January 2015 (has links)
This bachelor thesis offers a rhetorical analysis of the album Maranatha by Swedish Black Metal artist Funeral Mist. Its main focus is on the intertextuality between the song "Blessed Curse" and the biblical book Deuteronomy, especially Deut 28 from which it has sampled a large portion of text. In the analysis I uncover the similarities and differences between the two texts in order to explain how the biblical fragments constitute new meanings when rearranged and taken out of their original context. The analysis concludes with relating the material to its new context i.e. the album Maranatha and the Black Metal scene by explaining other intertexts and references to the Bible and discussing which genre is best suited to describe the album as a whole. The results of the study show that the biblical quotations in the lyrics convey radically different messages and meanings compared to their original content in Deut 28. This in turn acknowledge how dependent linguistic symbols are on their context. I finish off my thesis with a few reflections on the moral and ethical implications of this use of biblical material concerning the anti-christian agenda supported by members of the Black Metal scene and specifically how Daniel Rostén of Funeral Mist view his own work and agenda.
