Southern Genre Painting and Illustration from 1830 to 1890

Akard, Carrie Meitzner 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to give a concise view of stylistic, iconographical, and iconological trends in Southern genre paintings and illustrations between 1830 and 1890 by native Southern artists and artists who lived at least ten years in the South. Exploration of artworks was accomplished by compiling as many artworks as possible per decade, separating each decade by dominant trends in subject matter, and researching to determine political and/or social implications associated with and affecting each image. Historical documents and the findings of other scholars revealed that many artworks carried political overtones reflecting the dominant thought of the white ruling class during the period while the significance and interpretation of other artworks was achieved by studying dominant personal beliefs and social practices.

The significance of illustrations to readers : - A study on children´s reading comprehension and reading habits in school year 2.

Abstract

My curiosity of students' use of images for reading led me to seek knowledge of the students view on the text illustrations in the literature and through interviews. This study is about how pupils in the school year 2 experience reading, especially with images. The purpose is to investigate the significance of illustrations in reading for students in school year 2. I also want to find out how students see themselves as readers and how the survey material believes that the students comprehend reading. Eight children, both girls and boys have participated in the interview. They had to read from three books in different formats with the same approach and questions. Interview and reading aloud were recorded and analyzed. The results suggest that the students are not always aware of their own development of reading process and the importances of the images are not considered as high among students. Notably, many of them used the images to get the information they needed to answer questions. Those who read other than books at home believe that they do not read, even if reading is about decoding information and messages. ´The broadens the concept of text´, which means that the text also includes the message that is mediated by other than through the written word, seems unfamiliar to the students.

Irrational paratext : manipulated paratext in the gothic postmodern novels house of leaves, the adventuress, and the three incestuous sisters.

Howard, Nicole Marie January 2015 (has links)
Mark Z. Danielewski's House of Leaves and Audrey Niffenegger's two visual novels The Three Incestuous Sisters and The Adventuress all contain examples of manipulated paratext - paratexts being the devices involved in the presentation of the text such as titles, author names, font, introductions, illustrations, appendices, advertising, and interviews. The emphasis these authors place on these usually inconspicuous devices is an expression of the irrational themes contained within these texts. The irrational is an underlying theme of the Gothic genre and through examining the use of manipulated paratexts this thesis demonstrates how these texts make use of the irrational Gothic elements that are present within the postmodern. While Danielewski and Niffenegger both have these similar themes, the effects they create are extremely different. Niffenegger creates écriture feminine, or feminine writing as described by Hélène Cixous, by prioritising illustrations that feature marginalised bodily expression in order to convey the narrative rather than text. Danielewski, on the other hand, produces a text that is a pure pastiche of Gothic and postmodern devices in order to emulate the postmodern media in its creation of hyperreality and to reproduce the sensation of a media that possesses and changes its consumers. House of Leaves is the instigator for a number of similar texts that have been published since the turn of the millennium which will be considered an emerging literary movement.

Har bilden en mening? : En studie om illustrerad multiplikation / The meaning of pictures : a study of illustrated multiplication

Ahlgren, Anna January 2018 (has links)
Illustrated pictures play an important role as mediators of mathematical concepts and relations in mathematical textbooks used in Swedish primary school classrooms. Theories of the meaning of semiotics for teaching and learning, as well as the Variation theory of learning, are used as a framework to investigate the critical aspects for developing multiplicative reasoning through visual presentations. In this study143 students in 3rd grade (age 9-10) participated in a test where multiplication is represented with illustrations, using both additive and multiplicative groupings. The students were also instructed to draw multiplication expressions with various visual supports. Students’ responses were analyzed by quantifying groupings based on the multiplication expressions students identify, as well as the extend of which they use additive and multiplicative visual representations and support in their own drawings. Results show indications of different properties of multiplication that can be presented in illustrations. How teacher knowledge can be used to identify the critical aspects for learning multiplication is here discussed, leading to suggestions regarding ways is which textbook pictures can be useful tools in teaching and learning.

Narrative structure and philosophical debates in Tristram Shandy and Jacques le fataliste

Whiskin, Margaux Elizabeth January 2012 (has links)
The aim of the present thesis is to analyse how the narrative affects the various philosophical debates in Tristram Shandy and Jacques le fataliste. Contrary to what one expects from a philosophical novel, Sterne and Diderot do not impose upon the reader an authorial and authoritative discourse. Dominant discourses are constantly challenged and contradicted. The philosophical debates in both novels remain open and are left without a conclusion. The author's voice is but one amongst many others, and it is the narrative which maintains the dialogue between them by preventing one particular voice from invalidating the others. My argument hinges on Bakhtinian dialogism, which can be defined as the presence of interacting voices and views. In Tristram Shandy and Jacques le fataliste, dialogism occurs through the narrative structure allowing for the confrontation of the contradictory discourses in the philosophical debates, and enabling them to engage in dialogue, instead of establishing the authorial voice as the sole valid discourse in the text. Through those contradictions, the philosophical content takes on a different form, that of a refusal of systematic discourse. No dogmatic view is forced upon the reader. Sterne and Diderot do not offer a solution to the various philosophical questions debated in their novels. However, they do offer a philosophical method whereby the confrontation of contradictory ideas creates a dynamic for the pursuit of truth.

The present study try to analyse the images that the Spanish painter Salvador Dali accomplished to the Cervantes masterpiece, D. Quixote. The result is an illustrated book marked by one singularity: since its first edition, in 1945, new images were incorporated, allowing the editors total freedom to arrange them through the following publications, in a way that each edition, so far, is different from the previous one. With this singular artistic proposition, Dali subverts the conventions concerning the traditional process of book illustration. His approach to the literary production can be understood in a wider universe. This universe â?¿ the ut pictura poesis doctrine â?¿ is known as the humanistic theory of painting, comprehending the relations between poetry and painting, which, since the ancient times has been a concern of philosophers and art thinkers. By subverting the formal relations between image and text, Dali uncovers the ambiguity of renascence topic and allows the reader to compare the multiplicity of meanings of both languages / Doutorado / Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte / Doutor em Educação
