The conflicts and violence, often resulted from feelings of revulsion among people, even though they are situated as negative processes, can be useful when divergent and disproportionate social relations occur between them, helping to prevent their suppression and annihilation. In this study, we aimed to apprehend the imaginary of conflicts and violence in the relationship between teachers and students. Firstly, because we understand that school is a sociocultural space where postmodern societal relations are mixed and confronting modern structures and organizations. Second, because we perceive that conflicts and violence in the relation between teachers and students are recurrent and if not understood in a contextual way, they can nullify the possibility of their perception as resistance to instituted powers and totalitarian violence. This qualitative research was composed by: the dialogue with authors (Gilbert Durand, Michel Maffesoli, Georg Simmel, Boaventura de Souza Santos, Carlos Gadea, among others) whose works are classic references in the discussions about imaginaries, postmodernity, violence and conflicts, addressed in the bibliographical research; by a document research contemplating the analysis of Minutes of the Pedagogical Team intending to clear the indicatives of totalitarian violence and suppressive referrals in pedagogical interventions; it was also constituted by field research, in which the framework was formed by semi-structured interviews with students and teachers, as well as by group interviews using the Focal Group technique with students from a state public education institution located in the metropolitan region of Campo Mourão, in the interior of Paraná State. The resulting data corpus from this research were organized based on the technique of Content Analysis and analyzed from the formist sociology, which allowed to reveal the confrontations between the imaginary of teachers and students, within the scope of their relations in the everyday school, in which has manifested itself from denials, confrontations, lack of dialogue between these characters, as well as a series of elements that denote the recurrence in which conflicts occur and express violence in the classroom context. / As relações societais isentas de intencionalidades pré-definidas, os entrecruzamentos tribais e a ambivalência que marcam as deambulações e o “estar com” das pessoas, no contexto da pós-modernidade, constituem a polissemia do cotidiano, que é, anódino, banal e permeado por sentimentos de pertença e de repulsa. Os conflitos e as violências, muitas vezes, decorridos dos sentimentos de repulsa entre as pessoas, embora sejam situados como processos negativos, podem ter utilidade, quando ocorrem relações sociais divergentes e desproporcionais entre elas, contribuindo para evitar que ocorram supressões e aniquilamentos. Neste estudo, objetivamos apreender os imaginários de conflitos e violências na relação entre professores e alunos. Primeiramente, por entendermos que a escola é um espaço sociocultural onde as relações societais pós-modernas estão mescladas e confrontando estruturas e organizações modernas. Segundo, por percebermos que os conflitos e violências na relação entre professores e alunos são recorrentes e se não compreendidos de maneira contextual, podem anular a possibilidade de sua percepção como resistência aos poderes instituídos e violências totalitárias. Esta pesquisa qualitativa, compôs-se: pelo diálogo com autores (Gilbert Durand, Michel Maffesoli, Georg Simmel, Boaventura de Souza Santos, Carlos Gadea, entre outros autores), cujas obras são referências clássicas nas discussões sobre imaginários, pós-modernidade, violências e conflitos, abordados na pesquisa bibliográfica; pela pesquisa documental contemplando a análise de Atas da Equipe Pedagógica, intencionando desbravar os indicativos de violências totalitárias e encaminhamentos supressores em intervenções pedagógicas; também se constituiu pela pesquisa de campo, cujo arcabouço formou-se por entrevistas semiestruturadas com alunos e com professores e também, pelas entrevistas em grupo, por meio da técnica de Grupo Focal, com alunos de uma instituição de ensino pública estadual, localizada na região metropolitana de Campo Mourão, no interior do Estado do Paraná. O córpus de dados resultante da investigação foram organizados com base na técnica de Análise de Conteúdo e analisados a partir da sociologia formista, que permitiram revelar os confrontos entre os imaginários de professores e alunos, no âmbito de suas relações no cotidiano escolar, os quais, manifestaram-se a partir de recusas, enfrentamentos, a falta de diálogo entre estes personagens, bem como, uma série de elementos que denotam a recorrência com que ocorrem conflitos e se expressam violências no contexto da sala de aula.

Compreender melhor a cidade de Foz do Iguaçu, imergir na atmosfera de alteridade narrada por essas pessoas comuns, sujeitos praticantes do cotidiano, e traçar de forma mais nítida contornos das relações interculturais ambientadas nos espaços de fronteira é o interesse central deste estudo. Identidades, memórias, pertencimentos, vínculos de parentesco, amizade e conterraneidade, espacialidades, redes de sociabilidade, estratégias e jogos relacionais são temáticas desenvolvidas no texto a partir dos relatos dos imigrantes participantes da pesquisa argentinos, paraguaios, chilenos, libaneses e taiwaneses e das contribuições teóricas de Michel de Certeau, Michel Maffesoli, Cliffort Geertz, Zigmunt Bauman, Ulf Hannerz, Jacques Derrida e Fredrik Barth, dentre outros autores. A história de vida tópica é a perspectiva metodológica eleita para abordar o episódio da imigração nos contextos específicos das histórias de vida dos sujeitos. A partir das pistas dadas a conhecer nas interações com os saberes-fazeres dos imigrantes, é possível inferir que na experiência de imigração, identidades, sentidos, afetos e práticas culturais transbordam os limites dos territórios de origem. Novos arranjos criam e recriam significados e formas, confrontando ordenamentos inscritos nos imperativos estatutos vigentes no país de destino. São saberes-fazeres que no cotidiano perseguem liberdades intersticiais para nelas cultivar outras racionalidades e sociabilidades.

The present research is inserted in the Formation, Knowledge and Professional development Research Line of the Post graduation Program of Santa Maria Federal University. For its accomplishment I chose as collaborator subjects and interviewed four pedagogues, professors, of the UFSM Educational Center courses. I used a semi structured interview script to attain their life stories. Listening to the professor-pedagogues was justified also by understanding the importance of these professionals in the conjuncture in which further education is in our country. The questions that disturb me the most and which I used in the research were the following: How is the professor-pedagogues formation who act in the UFSM Educational Center courses? How is the instituted and institutor imaginary of these professors about being a professor in further education? In the conception of these professors, which is the constitutive knowledge of their profession? How does the personal knowledge contribute to make the professors the professional they are or wish to be? I tried to verify the instituted and institutor imaginary of the professors about being a professor in further education and the constitutive knowledge of the teaching profession; besides knowing, through spoken and written autobiographical life stories, the trajectory they went through in their formation process; investigating the professor-pedagogues formation who act in the UFSM CE courses, seeking to understand how this process reflects on the practice and on the space where these professionals are inserted; contributing with material for the database of the research Image Laboratory: meaning of teaching in the professors formation. The research intended, mainly, to approximate to the existing reality. I emphasize that I did not have, at any moment, the intention of criticizing professors. I realized these professors formation is a continuous, personal and nontransferable process that never ends. The questions I found, researching the professors personal knowledge, concern a lot more to my learning, because this is a research that is capable of providing self-formation and not leading to watertight conclusions. I point out the importance of that self-formation that was also experienced by the professors. I think a research is always something not conclusive, not exclusive and not definitive. The preferable is that others can arise from this one. This study allows the reading of other practices and suggests new ways to be researched. / A presente pesquisa está inserida na Linha de Pesquisa: Formação, Saberes e desenvolvimento Profissional do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. Para a sua realização escolhi como sujeitos colaboradores e entrevistei quatro pedagogas, professoras universitárias, dos cursos do Centro de Educação da UFSM. Utilizei um roteiro de entrevista semi-estrturado para obter as suas histórias de vida. Ouvir as professoras pedagogas justificou-se, também, por entender a importância dessas profissionais na conjuntura em que se encontra a educação superior em nosso país. As questões que mais me desassossegam e que utilizei na pesquisa foram as seguintes: Como acontece a formação das professoras pedagogas que atuam nos cursos do Centro de Educação da UFSM?Como é o Imaginário instituído e instituinte dessas professoras sobre o ser professora na educação superior? Na concepção dessas professoras, quais são os saberes constitutivos da sua profissão?Como os saberes pessoais contribuem para que os professores se tornem o profissional que é/deseja ser? Tentei verificar o imaginário instituído e instituinte das professoras sobre o ser professora na educação superior e os saberes constitutivos da profissão docente; além de conhecer, através da história de vida oral e das escritas autobiográficas, a trajetória percorrida pelas professoras em seu processo formativo; investigar a formação das professoras pedagogas que atuam nos cursos do CE da UFSM, buscando compreender como esse processo repercute na prática e no espaço onde estas profissionais estão inseridas; contribuir com material para o banco de dados da pesquisa Laboratório de Imagens: significações da docência na formação de professores . A pesquisa pretendeu, principalmente, fazer uma aproximação com a realidade existente. Lembro-nos que não tive, em momento algum, o objetivo de fazer críticas às professoras universitárias. Percebi que a formação dessas professoras é um processo contínuo, pessoal e intransferível que não termina jamais. As questões que encontrei, pesquisando os saberes pessoais das professoras, dizem muito mais respeito as minhas aprendizagens, pois esta é uma pesquisa capaz de proporcionar a autoformação e não encontrar conclusões estanques. Destaco a importância desta autoformação que também foi vivenciada pelas professoras. Penso que uma pesquisa é sempre algo não conclusiva, não exclusiva e não definitiva. O ideal é que outras possam surgir a partir desta. Este estudo permite a leitura de outras práticas e suscitam novos caminhos a serem pesquisados.

Baiting Sustainability: Collaborative Coastal Management, Heritage Tourism, and Alternative Fisheries in Placencia, Belize

Local coastal fishers in Belize are adapting novel strategies to manage, exploit, and market marine and coastal resources in an effort to promote fishing livelihoods and coastal environmental sustainability. These resilience strategies respond to diminished fishing stocks, fisheries and environmental policies and regulations, climate change, shifting seafood markets, and expanding tourism development. With growing foreign investment and nationally-directed infrastructure improvement projects on the Placencia Peninsula in recent years, tourism development is shifting toward mass tourism, and local residents are seeking avenues to sustain their livelihoods. In Placencia, the need for effective monitoring and management of Marine Protected Areas, fisheries, and coastal tourism, and enforcement of environmental regulations is being met through collaborations between the fisheries sector, governmental departments, regional environmental NGOs, and international aid agencies. Drawing on an “anthropology of public policy” approach and ethnographic research (including interviews, participatory mapping, surveys, and participant-observation) between 2013 and 2015 on the peninsula, this thesis investigates the implications of collaborative coastal resource management strategies developed between the Placencia Producers Cooperative Society Limited and regional environmental NGOs such as the Southern Environmental Association (SEA), among others, to promote marine conservation, local fishing livelihoods, and heritage tourism. In particular, I consider how fishing livelihoods, conceptions of local history and heritage, environmental knowledge, tourism development, and fisheries and environmental policies inform the relationships and trajectory for “sustainable” local fisheries management through these collaborations. Many local fishers recognize a complementary relationship between tourism and fishing occupations through the ways that they can impart an ecological conservation ethos, centering coastal environmental knowledge, education, and local “embodied heritage” experiences and skills to sustain local marine livelihoods while preserving coastal ecosystems for visitors and future generations of residents. With the declining prominence of commercial fishing for Caribbean spiny lobster, queen conch, and fin-fish in the village, several Placencia fishers are applying their generationally inherited and embodied marine knowledge to livelihood diversification strategies such as seasonal, full- or part-time transitions to tour guiding and NGO coastal conservation, monitoring and enforcement, restoration, and outreach positions. Moreover, many fishers in the Placencia producers fishing cooperative have ventured into alternative fisheries and mariculture activities including fishing and marketing of invasive lionfish as well as seaweed farming and value-added product promotion with variable support from the Belize Fisheries Department, SEA, other environmental NGOs, and international conservation and development organizations. Recognizing these livelihood diversification strategies and relationships for sustainable coastal resource management, I discuss the opportunities and challenges of three recent and emerging alternative livelihoods programs directed by the Placencia fishing cooperative including the seaweed farming project, the lionfish eradication and marketing initiative, and the development of a heritage tourism program centering fisher livelihoods in connection with a proposed local fishing history museum. To explore the possibility for fishing heritage tourism as a pathway to “sustainable tourism development” on the peninsula in the future, I investigate how local conceptions of fishing as heritage in Placencia village converge with or diverge from tourist “imaginaries” of culture and heritage on the peninsula as well as heritage assets and products conceived in national sustainable tourism development policy and commercial tourism markets. Residents of the peninsula, Belizean workers and visitors residing off of the peninsula, and foreign tourists alike recognize fishing and activites, events, and places associated with fishing as aspects of local heritage, although foreign visitors generally ascribe only cursory significance to fishing in the peninsula’s culture(s), heritage, and identities as compared with Belizean nationals. Rather, these visitors often imagine local heritage in terms of beaches and relaxation, the Belize Barrier reef and cayes, and especially the local friendly vibe, “quaintness,” and cultural diversity of people, drawing partly from national and local tourism marketing media portrayals of major attractions on the peninsula (such as on websites and in magazines and guidebooks) and resident and visitor word of mouth. Local and national sustainable tourism policies for the peninsula that recommend cultural tourism as a secondary product for future tourism development on the peninsula align with interview and survey results that suggest widespread resident and visitor interest in seeing the development of cultural heritage attractions on the peninsula such as a local cultural and historical museum. For many residents, conceptions of heritage tourism fit within the scope of local plans and visions for sustainable development that aim to maintain the integrity of the peninsula as a “low impact,” “authentic,” integrated, and primarily overnight tourism destination with a laid-back vibe, beaches, cultural diversity, and access to a variety of inland and marine-based attractions. Drawing from these results, I conclude by discussing the implications of these alternative fisheries and tourism initiatives and markets to support local livelihoods and coastal environmental conservation, and consider the potential viability of collaborative coastal resource management approaches between fishers, NGOs, and governmental organizations for future sustainable development in Placencia and other coastal Belizean communities. This thesis represents an applied case study of collaborative fisheries management and how heritage is conceived and applied in a coastal Belizean context. It builds on previous coastal environmental resource management, heritage studies, and anthropology of tourism research, and considers the significance of local heritage and livelihoods in crafting locally accountable, relevant, and sustainable development policies and plans in coastal settings.

Knowing the Future: Visions of the Bioeconomy and the Politics of Global Transformation

abstract: This dissertation explores the contemporary politics of global transformation: the ways biological expertise and economic rationalities are positioned as agents of governance in the face of emerging global crisis. It examines visions for a new bioeconomy that are offered in response to impending global crisis. Leaders point to calculations of global population growth and resource depletion to predict future crises and call for a new bioeconomy as a pillar of sustainable and “good” governance. Focusing on visions and practices of bioeconomy-making in the U.S. and Brazil, the dissertation examines bioeconomy discourse as a response to global crisis and a framework of global governance that promises resource abundance and human wellbeing. Bioeconomy discourse makes visible shared notions of how the world is and how it should be that animate the world-making practices of bioeconomy. The dissertation analyzes the bioeconomy as simultaneously a product of existing institutional and nationally situated values and rationalities, and a significant site of performative novelty. It is an effort to reformulate existing projects in the biosciences—from technology regulation to market formation—and establish new rationalities of governance in the name of producing thoroughgoing transformations to both the global economy and to life itself. Framing existing scientific and economic rationalities as suppressed and misdirected in their power to govern, bioeconomy proponents envision a novel order derivable from the proper conjugation of biological and economic rationalities. Through the lens of bioconstitutionalism, the dissertation elucidates how national, scientific and public rights and responsibilities are coproduced in relation to a sociotechnical imaginary of vital conjuring. Underwritten by the imaginary of vital conjuring, visions of a future transformed promise that abundance and order can be called up from a tangle of crisis and decay. The imaginary of vital conjuring marries a vision of the technological potential of biological life and the forms of economy capable of unlocking that potential. En viktig del i diskussioner av kärnkraft är frågan om det avfall som skapas i driften av kärnreaktorer. Undersökningen har identifierat en förändring i uppfattningen av avfall under perioden mellan 1956, då kärnkraften var i sitt tidiga stadium, och 1980 då densamma har implementerats kommersiellt i Sverige. Uppsatsens syfte är att närmare förstå vilken roll diskussioner om kärnenergins restprodukter hade under denna förändring. Detta görs genom att använda sig av statens offentliga utredningar som material och användning av Sheila Jassanoff och Sang-Hyun Kims teoretiska ramverk sociotechnical imaginaries. Dessa används båda för att belysa utvecklingen av synen av avfallet som skapas av kärnenergin. Materialet visar hur avfallsfrågan diskuterades av experter och hur problematik eller icke-problematik togs upp till regeringen som hade beställt utredningen.

This essay examines visions of the future in Alex Garlands 2015 film Ex Machinausing critical futures studies and posthumanist theories. The aim is to make visible howfutures are constructed and how artificial bodies are coded based on ideas of the future.Through an image and discourse analysis, the essay shows how “Western” society isstructured and how it is expected to be structured in the future. While the previous researchmainly focuses on phenomenology and gender, this essay shows that intersectional methodscan be helpful in making visible how power structures influence how we construct and viewbodies. In addition, the analysis shows how images of the future are multifaceted andcomplex, while at the same time they reproduce hegemonic visions of the past, present andfuture. In summary, this essay shows how the visions of the future in Ex Machina areprimarily based on a “Western” scientific tradition that reproduces colonial and patriarchalideals, though they are consistently challenged by the existence and actions of the cyborgs.

Redefining Place Through the Mazarinades: The Pont-Neuf and the Place Royale

In 1649, during the Fronde Parlementaire (1648-1650), Paris was teetering between opposing political camps that were trying to seize control of the city. The city's bourgeois parliament, in open rebellion to the political policies of King Louis XIV's Chief Minister, Cardinal Jules Mazarin, was raising an army and threatening to oust the Italian imposter. With the rise in violence within the city limits, Parisian printers and booksellers began circulating political propaganda in the form of booklets, mini-plays, brochures, and pamphlets that came to be known as mazarinades. Because these mazarinades—which took their name from the very man they were either attacking or defending—were often scathing in their criticism of the political forces at play within the city, they were rarely attributed to an identifiable author. But while the minds behind the matter were usually anonymous, the authors of the mazarinades made frequent reference to specific public places within Paris in an attempt to rally support to their cause. These public places, especially the Bourbon-constructed projects of the Pont-Neuf and the Place Royale, were depicted in new ways to transform Parisian perceptions of the functionality of those places and to alter the relationship between the city's inhabitants and their Bourbon royal family. This was done in an effort to manipulate public opinion and to redefine the urban culture of the city during the conflict.This thesis demonstrates that the mazarinades were altering their Parisian readers' perceptions of the Pont-Neuf and the Place Royale as they tried to sway public opinion in favor of their authors' partisan viewpoints of the citywide conflict. By appropriating these places and subsequently attributing specific political viewpoints and behaviors to their visitors, the authors of the mazarinades sought to change the way Parisians perceived those places and thus redirect the political atmosphere of the city. Public space became the critical intersection of the many political camps and emerged as a major thematic element in the many mazarinades circulating throughout Paris at that time.

Giving Dad the Spotlight: Paternal Experiences of Raising a Child with Cerebral Palsy: How Does This Influence Fatherhood Trajectory and the Meaning of Fatherhood?

For approximately the last 45 years, researchers have examined a standardized pathway for an individual’s life course, involving leaving the parents’ home, building a stable career, getting married, having children, followed by retirement and death. Contrary to what was been previously discovered, the life course is no longer considered as linear as it was once thought to be. This statement has been further investigated and proven more specifically among families of children with special needs. This Master’s thesis reviews the perspective of 11 (eleven) fathers of children with cerebral palsy located in Canada and in the United States. Fathers voluntarily participated in a qualitative 90-minute qualitative structured interview, followed by the construction of a historical timeline of key events pertaining to their journey to becoming a father. Qualitative analyses consisted of a content analysis to investigate how fatherhood is constructed and the experiences of being a father to a child with cerebral palsy consist of. In essence, becoming a father to a child with cerebral palsy is an extremely emotional experience as complex and continuous feelings emerge in those transitioning into fatherhood.

Ao trazer o debate ciberfeminista sobre como o corpo ciborgue vive o ciberespaço na atualidade, utilizando da cartografia social como metodologia para mapear as ações dos grupos/coletivos/projetos/esforços dessas ciborgues acerca da violência de gênero online, esta pesquisa contribui para ampliação conceitual e metodológica de diversos tópicos das ciências humanas como território, fronteira, violência, segurança, direitos, política, sujeito e muitos outros da vida moderna. Mais que um mapeamento físico, trata-se de cartografar o percurso destas iniciativas, destes imaginários sociotécnicos como dito por Sheila Jasanoff (2015); que, ao se debruçar sobre tais violências executam duas funções primordiais nesta pesquisa: 1) perturbar as dicotomias e binários mais correntemente aceitos tanto nas Relações Internacionais como na teoria política no geral sobre humano/não-humano, masculino/feminino, público/privado, local/global, virtual/real, etc.; 2) atuar na co-produção de futuros desejáveis alcançados por meio da ciência e da tecnologia. / [en] This master thesis by following the initiatives that deal with gender violence in cyberspace in Latin America, seeks to insert itself in the debate about the expansion of the theoretical field of International Relations. By bringing the cyberfeminist debate about how the cyborg body experiences cyberspace today, using social cartography as a methodology to map the actions of groups/collectives/projects/efforts of these cyborgs about online gender violence, this research contributes to a conceptual and methodological expansion of various topics in the human sciences such as territory, borders, violence, security, rights, politics, subject, and many others of modern life. More than a physical mapping, it is about mapping the course of these initiatives, these sociotechnical imaginaries as stated by Sheila Jasanoff (2015); which, when approaching violence, perform two fundamental functions for this research: 1) disturb the dichotomies and binaries more commonly accepted both in International Relations and in political theory in general about human/non-human, male/female, local/global, virtual/real, public/private, etc.; 2) act on the co-production of desirable futures achieved through science and technology.
