Evaluation and recommendations for an improved sustainability management in infrastructure projects at ÅF

The infrastructure sector is essential for the social development in relation to for example urbanisation, but the infrastructure sector also has a negative impact on the environment. Infrastructure projects are part of the UN SDG and is an important factor regarding sustainable development. It is therefore important to make sure the development of infrastructure projects are sustainable in all phases. This can, among other things, be achieved through a sustainable project management. However, there is no clear systematic frameworkfor how sustainability can be implemented in the project management. This thesis aims to contribute with recommendations regarding how sustainability can be implemented in large infrastructure projects with the specific research question How can the implementation of sustainability in the project management in large infrastructure projects be improved at ÅF?. This thesis has been carried out at ÅF with the sub-project OLP4 as a case study to be able to identify problematic areas and key factors that are important regarding the implementation of sustainability. OLP4 is the subsection Södertälje-Trosa which is a sub-project of the railway The East Link Project in Sweden. The thesis is based on a literature study regarding project management and important factors for implementing sustainability in work process and achieve sustainability project management. This is supplemented by online and internal documents as well as interviews with employees at ÅF/Tyréns and Trafikverket regarding The East Link Project and OLP4.OLP4 is designed by ÅF/Tyréns. It is a big project with 200 employees involved, resulting inseveral meetings and the need for systematic work processes. Sustainability is discussed in OLP4 but the knowledge, sustainability work and sustainability project management can be improved. The main difficulty in implementing sustainability in daily work task, is to break it down into clear guidelines how this can be applied. Based on this study the following conclusions have been reached. To implement sustainability in the project management in large infrastructure projects the project management must be structured. Implementation of sustainability requires also that employees have good knowledge about sustainability and that there is a good culture, structure and communication in the project regarding sustainability. / Infrastruktursektorn är väsentlig för samhällets utveckling i relation till bland annat urbanisering, men har också en negativ påverkan på omgivningen. Infrastrukturprojekt är endel av FN:s hållbarhetsmål och är en viktig faktor för en hållbar utveckling. Det är därför viktigt att se till att infrastrukturprojekt är hållbara genom alla faser. Detta kan bland annat uppnås genom att ha en hållbar projektledning för de olika faserna i ett projekt. Det finns inget systematiskt förhållningssätt till hur man kan implementera hållbarhet i projektledningen för stora infrastrukturprojekt idag. Det här arbetet har målet att bidra med rekommendationer angående hur hållbarhet kan bli implementeras i projektledningen i stora infrastrukturprojekt med den specifika frågeställningen Hur kan implementeringen av hållbarhet i projektledningen för stora infrastrukturprojekt bli förbättrad på ÅF? Det här arbetet har blivit utfört på ÅF med del-projektet OLP4 som en fallstudie för att kunna identifiera problemområden och nyckelfaktorer vid implementering av hållbarhet i projektledningen. OLP4 är delsträckan Södertälje-Trosa som är ett delprojekt till järnväg Ostlänken. För att svara på frågeställningen och uppnå målet är arbetat bland annat baserat på litteraturstudier gällande projektledningen, nyckelfaktorer och implementering av hållbarhet iprojektledning. Den andra delen av arbetat är baserat på semi-strukturerade intervjuer med anställda hos ÅF, Tyréns och Trafikverket, som arbetar i OLP4. Denna del presenterar hur man arbetar med projektledning och hållbarhet i OLP4 idag. Tillsammans utgör litteraturstudien och resultat grunden till diskussionen som analyserar styrkor och svagheter i OLP4 samt förbättringsförslag för en förstärkt implementering av hållbarhet i projektledningen. OLP4 projekteras av ÅF/Tyréns och är ett stort infrastruktur projekt med ca 200 konsulter, vilket resulterar i flertal möten och ett behov av systematiska arbetsprocesser för att uppnå en strukturerad projektledning. Hållbarhet diskuteras i OLP4 men kunskapen, arbetsprocessen och implementering av hållbarhet i projektledningen kan bli förbättrad. Den främsta svårigheten att implementera hållbarhet i stora projekt, är att bryta ner arbetet i tydliga riktlinjer för hur det kan tillämpas i vardagsarbetet. Utifrån detta arbeta har följande slutsatser dragits. För att hållbarhet ska kunna implementeras i projektledningen i stora infrastrukturprojekt måste projektledningen vara strukturerad. Implementeringen kräver även att medarbetare har kunskap om hållbarhet, samt att det finns en bra kultur, struktur och kommunikation för hållbarhet i projektet.

A startup’s ability to make correct decisions regarding their Cloud choices is essential if they intend to stay competitively relevant in their business. Choosing the Cloud solutions that allow for an optimal level of production can give startups that operate in most industries a competitive advantage. However, new startups have a plethora of factors to consider when choosing a Cloud provider, which is the basis of the thesis. The purpose of the study is to explore and gain insight regarding how new startups can make suitable decisions when selecting different Cloud services. The study’s main data collection method is a set of interviews that were conducted with CTOs from some of Sweden’s most promising startup companies. The study thoroughly discusses the three largest Cloud providers (Amazon Web Services, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform), and attempts to reveal how these Cloud services are positioned in the eyes of the customers that use them on a daily basis. A main finding of the study was that the most important factors to consider when selecting a Cloud provider is its compatibility with your company’s IT-environment, the quality and quantity of its services, how well managed it is, if it offers data protection compliances, and ultimately, the prices of the services it offers. Furthermore, information derived from the interviews imply that new startups ought to make their IT-solution as simple as possible in order to reduce the chances of running into integration problems with different Cloud solutions. The author intends for the study to be a guideline for new startups to better understand what factors they ought to prioritize when selecting Cloud providers. / En startups förmåga att ta de rätta besluten när det kommer till deras val av molntjänster är otroligt viktigt. Genom att välja de rätta molnlösningar så kan man se till att företaget får en bra möjlighet att växa, och att rätt molnlösningar kan det kan ge de flesta startups digitala verktyg som kan ge konkurransfördel. Det finns däremot mycket att tänka på när man väljer en molntjänst, och det är vad studien bygger på. Syftet med detta projekt var att utforska och bättre förstå hur nya startups kan ta de rätta besluten när det kommer till deras val av molntjänster. Studiens huvudsakliga datainsamlingsmetod var tolv intervjuer som utfördes tillsammans med CTOs från några av Sveriges mest framgångsrika startupföretag. Studien utför en noggrann diskussion och jämförelse på de tre största molntjänsterna i världen (Amazon Web Services, Azure, och Google Cloud Platform), och försöker att visa hur dessa molntjänster är positionerade enligt de kunder som använder sig av molntjänsterna vardaligen. Studien visar att de viktigaste faktorerna som man bör tänka på när man väljer molntjänst är: hur pass kompatibel den är med företagets IT-miljö, kvaliteten och mängden tjänster som leverantören erbjuder, hur pass managerade leverantörens tjänster är, om leverantören överensstämmer med regler för uppgiftsskydd, och kostnaden för molnleverantörens tjänster. Ytterligare så fann man indikationer från intervjuerna att nya startups bör försöka sikta på molnlösningar som är så simpla som möjligt och helst att dessa lösningar är integrerade lösningar som molnleverantören själv erbjuder, och detta på grund av att det kan vara svårt att integrera molnlösningar från olika företag. Författarens avsikt för denna rapport är att den ska vara en riktlinje för nya startups så att de kan förstå vad de bör tänka på när de väljer sina molntjänster.

網際網路的快速發展,加上 WWW 所具備的多媒體呈現與連結能力,全球資訊網 WWW 迅速成為一項新興的媒體。傳統媒體業者紛紛投入人力、物力成立網站,提供網路上的服務。本研究的主要目的即在探討網路媒體出版事業的經營要素,並釐清網路特性對於媒體經營之影響。 本研究根據媒體經營要素之整理,及對網路出版實際案例之觀察、與比較分析,歸納出網路媒體出版事業經營要素之研究發現:1.網路出版的產品定位明確,且其市場關聯性極高。2.網路出版極為強調資訊之即時性或累積性。3.網路出版可打破地理區域限制,網站提供較多的國際性資訊漸成為趨勢。4.網路出版極為重視網站使用之方便性,以各種網路工具設計來提高網站使用的方便性。5.網路出版都很重視與讀者之互動,設計各種能照顧深度或廣度的互動機制,亦即可看出都很用心經營網站讀者社群。6.網路出版非常重視人力資源。7.網路出版都擁有極佳之媒體資源,並善加利用。8.網路出版都有極佳科技應用能力,亦即擁有強大的電子資料庫,以及數位化生產能力。9.網路出版需建立事業合作網路,利用外部資源彌補內部資源之不足。 比較傳統媒體經營要素與網路出版經營要素,可以發現在產品定位、人力資源、媒體資源、外部資源等方面並沒有改變;而在資訊即時性或累積性、地理區域範圍、科技應用能力方面稍有調整;而社群經營、使用方便性則屬網路出版獨特之經營要素。 在資訊即時性方面,網路出版受到網路特性即時性之影響,能以最快的時間完成資訊的傳輸、溝通,加上網路生產價值鍊重組,因此可達到更高的即時性。在資訊累積性方面,由於網路數位式資料庫更易於資訊之累積,且能打破平面媒體篇幅、版面的限制,使得網路出版之資訊累積性更為提高。在地理區域範圍方面,網路出版在網路無遠弗屆、即時性特性的影響下,發行傳送不再受到地理限制。在科技應用方面,在數位化、資訊價值特性之影響下,網路出版必須強調數位化的生產能力,以及擁有數位化之資產。在網路出版所獨有的經營要素方面,由於網路特性即時性、互動性、價值鍊重組、網路外部性之發揮,讀者社群的經營成為網路出版的重要工作。另外一項新的網路出版經營要素--使用方便性,則與媒體呈現之特性較有關聯。 / The study of key factors of Internet publishing management-By Yuan-lung Tsai-Advisor: Dr. Chao-Tung Wen1.MotivationBesides the emergence and rapid growth of Internet, the multimedia display and linking talent of WWW have made it a booming media. The research was carried out in an orchard of guava in the Campus of the Federal University of Viçosa, in Viçosa, MG. Ecological life table for each time had been constructed. From these life tables, the critical stages and the key factors of mortality of T. limbata had been determined. The critical stage, which determine the size of the population of T. limbata in all the evaluated times was the nymph stage. The critical instars of mortality, in the period from 06/02/2006 to 07/25/2006, were the 2º and 5º instars; and the key factors were predation in the 2nd instar and the parasitoid Psyllaephagus sp. and predation by Syrphidae larvae in the 5th instar. In the period from 07/29/2006 to 09/15/2006 the critical instars of mortalities were the 1st and the 4th. In the 1st instar, the key factor of mortality was predation. In the 4th instar, it was the predation by Vespidae the only which presented a significant correlation with the total mortality being this the mortality key factor. Finally, in the period from 10/11/2006 to 11/24/2006 the critical instar of mortality was the 4th, in this instar the predation by Vespidae was the key factor. Being the nymph stage, the one that determines the population size in all periods evaluated, then the control of T. limbata must be done during this stage and must be in a way that preserve and increase the natural control agents, which were the key factors. / Avaliou-se neste trabalho, o controle natural de Triozoida limbata (Enderlein) (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha: Triozidae) em três épocas do ano: nos períodos de 02/06/2006 a 25/07/2006, 29/07/2006 a 15/09/2006 e de 11/10/2006 a 24/11/2006. A pesquisa foi realizada em pomar de goiaba no Campus da Universidade Federal de Viçosa, em Viçosa, MG. Foram confeccionadas tabelas de vida ecológica para cada época. A partir dessas tabelas de vida determinaram-se as fases críticas e os fatores chave de mortalidade de T. limbata. A fase determinante do tamanho da população do T. limbata em todas as épocas avaliadas foi a fase ninfal. Os ínstares críticos de mortalidade no período de 02/06/2006 a 25/07/2006, foram o 2º e o 5º ínstares; e os fatores-chave de mortalidade foram a predação no 2º ínstar e parasitismo por Psyllaephagus sp. (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) e predação por larvas de Diptera: Syrphidae no 5º ínstar. No período de 02/06/2006 a 25/07/2006, os ínstares críticos de mortalidade foram o 1º e o 4º. No 1º ínstar o fator chave de mortalidade foi a predação. Já no 4º ínstar a predação por Vespidae foi a única que apresentou correlação significativa com a mortalidade total sendo este o fator chave de mortalidade. Já no período de 11/10/2006 a 24/11/2006, o ínstar crítico de mortalidade foi o 4º. Neste ínstar, a predação por Vespidae foi o fator chave de mortalidade neste período. Sendo o estádio ninfal, o período crítico determinante do tamanho da população, em todas as épocas avaliadas, então o controle da população de T. limbata deve ser realizado durante esse período, e deve ser de forma que preserve e aumente os agentes de controle natural, os quais foram os fatores-chaves de mortalidade no período crítico.

Factors affecting digital transformation in manufacturing companies

The adoption of digital transformation can be seen as the companies opportunity for increased competitiveness. The possibilities of digital transformation are many as it allows, among other things, a connection between workers and machines or between machines. However, companies are facing difficulties to implement digital transformation effectively. Implementing digital transformation is a slow process for companies and most companies are in the early stages of it. Also, the technologies that are associated with digital transformation are still unclear. Companies still lack a systematic approach to implementing digital transformation. Understanding critical factors that affect digital transformation in manufacturing companies could help to develop a systematic approach for implementing digital transformation. Therefore, in this research the authors have carefully reviewed and identified factors that affect digital transformation within the manufacturing industry. This thesis research aims to identify the factors that will lead to the success of digital transformation in manufacturing companies and to also find out the factors that when being ignored will lead to unsuccessfulness. The research has been guided by three research questions: 1) Which factors are stated in the literature that is affecting the implementation of digital transformation in manufacturing companies, 2) How are these factors related to each other in the literature, and 3) How can practitioners and academics use factors for the successful implementation of digital transformation? In this research, a systematic literature review (SLR) has been carried out which has led to identifying 11 key factors. Based on the identified factors, a model has been developed to support the implementation of digital transformation in manufacturing companies. The model consists of four different categories of factors, namely, “Awareness related factors, Readiness related factors, Technology, Selection, and Integration related factors (so-called ARTO-model. Furthermore, a survey has been developed to get experts´ perspectives on the identified factors and the model.  Based on the input from the survey, a final compiled ARTO model is proposed as a guiding tool for the successful implementation of digital transformation. Further, a model to show the relationship between the factors is created. Möjligheterna med digital transformation är många, då det bland annat tillåter uppkoppling mellan arbetare och maskiner. Dock, står företagen inför svårigheter med implementeringen av det. Implementeringen av digital transformation är en långsam process för företagen och många företag befinner sig i tidigt skede. Även teknologier som associeras med digital transformation är fortfarande oklara och det saknas kunskap gällande detta. Dessutom finns det inte mycket handlingskraft när det kommer till faktorer som påverkar digital transformation. Företag saknar fortfarande tillvägagångssätt för implementering av digital transformation. Därför har författarna till den här undersökningen noga granskat och identifierat faktorer som påverkar digital transformation inom tillverkande företag.  Syftet med den här undersökningen är att ta reda på faktorer som ska leda till framgång av digital transformation i tillverkande företag, och vidare ta reda på faktorer som när de ignoreras kommer leda till misslyckande. Forskningsfråga 1: Vilka är faktorerna som nämns i litteraturen och som påverkar digital transformation i tillverkande företag?  Forskningsfråga 2: Hur är dessa faktorer relaterade till varandra inom litteraturen?  Forskningsfråga 3: Hur kan praktiker och akademiker använda faktorer för ett framgångsrikt genomförande av digital transformation? I den här undersökningen har det gjorts en systematisk litteraturstudie som ledde till utvecklingen av ett ramverk. Vidare skapades en enkät för att få experters perspektiv på den systematiska litteraturstudien och ramverket.  Det skapades en modell som bygger på fyra olika kategorier ”Awareness related factors, Readiness related factors, Technology, Selection and integration related factors (så kallad ARTO-modell) utifrån den systematiska litteraturstudien och därefter gjordes en liknande modell baserad på inputen från enkäten. The funding process in female-led capital-intensive start-ups

The purpose of this study is to present how female entrepreneurs in Sweden raise capital for their start-ups and if there are common key factors presented among those who succeed. The entrepreneurs interviewed have all successfully raised capital. The research shows that female founders only have access to 1% or less of the capital in Sweden. We interview investors to acquire their perception of gender bias in fundraising and the key factors they look for during their due diligence process. The study shows that female entrepreneurs prefer bootstrapping and soft fundings before approaching investors. The majority of the female entrepreneurs were unsecure or did not know if they have been exposed to gender bias from investors during their fundraising process because they succeeded raising capital. They were at the same time aware of the existing gender bias. The majority of the investors expressed that they preferred to invest in female or mixed funded companies because their experience shows that those tend to perform better. The study also shows that key factors during the fundraising process are diversity of the team, resilience, networking, building good relations and that the entrepreneurs appears to be coachable from the investors point of view.

Detta leder till att företag måste förändra sin struktur och sitt arbetssätt för att kunna anpassa sin produktutveckling efter kunderna och marknaden. Ett sätt för företag att kunna fortsätta vara konkurrenskraftiga och bemöta marknadens behov är att implementera agila arbetssätt. Syftet med detta arbete är att bidra till ökad kunskap kring hur produktutvecklingsprocessen för en agil transformation från beslut till implementation kan ske i mjukvarubranschen. Arbetet har undersökt tre frågeställningar relaterade till agil transformation i mjukvarubranschen. Inledningsvis genomfördes en litteraturstudie för att erhålla en ökad förståelse för produktutveckling i mjukvarubranschen och för det agila arbetssättet. Vidare utfördes en kvalitativ semistrukturerad intervjuundersökning med fyra respondenter från tre företag där samtliga arbetar med agila arbetssätt och produktutveckling inom mjukvarubranschen. Den kvalitativa studien undersökte vilka utmaningar och potentiella fördelar en agil transformation kan generera samt vad som kännetecknar en lyckad agil transformation. Utifrån resultatet av denna studie utformades ett antal kategorier som kan användas som riktlinjer för hur en organisation kan gå tillväga vid en agil transformation i mjukvarubranschen. Studien visar att en agil transformation är en komplex och tidskrävande process. Utmaningar med agil transformation innefattar att ett agilt arbetssätt ofta blir beroende av en nyckelperson, det kräver en hög samverkan och ökad förståelse för varandras arbetsuppgifter samt ett anpassningsbart tankesätt som är mottagligt för förändring. Däremot genererar den agila transformationen fördelar så som en ökad produktivitet och användarnöjdhet, minskat antal defekter och en kortare ledtid hos samtliga företag. För att lyckas med en agil transformation visar studien på att ett företags medarbetare bör vara mottagliga för förändring och att motivet till transformationen borde komma inifrån organisationen. Sammanfattningsvis resulterade den agila transformationen i en förbättrad mjukvaruutveckling. / A large number of businesses are emerging on the already competitive market which places high demands on the development of new innovative products for companies in the software industry. As a result, companies must change the structure of the organization and their methods. Due to this, they have to customize their product development in order to meet the requirements of the customers and the markets demand and maintain their competitiveness. One way for companies to stay competitive is by implementing agile working methodologies. This study aims to contribute with knowledge and investigate the processes of an agile transformation from decision-making to implementation in the software industry. The study has examined three problem statements related to the agile transformation in the software industry. Initially a literature review was performed to gain an insight into product development in the software industry and the agile working methodologies. Furthermore, a semi structured qualitative interview was conducted which involved four respondents from three companies that work with agile working methodologies and product development in the software industry. This qualitative study examined the challenges and possible opportunities that an agile transformation generates as well as the characteristics of a successful transformation. Based on the result of this study, several categories were chosen and treated as guidelines for how an organization in the software industry can approach the agile transformation and proceed with it successfully. The results of the study demonstrate that an agile transformation is a complex and time-consuming process. The many challenges involving the agile transformation includes that the agile working methodology often becomes dependent of a single key person, it also requires collaboration, an increased understanding of each other’s work as well as an adaptable mindset that is receptive towards change. However, the agile transformation enables advantages amongst all the companies such as an increased productivity and user satisfaction, decreased number of defects as well as a reduced leadtime. To succeed with an agile transformation, it is of importance that a company’s employees are receptive towards change and that the motive behind the transformation comes internally within the organization. In conclusion, the agile transformation improved and strengthened the companies’ software development.
