Gunnarsson, Sofie January 2016 (has links)
The high level of food waste is a problem that arises along the production of food and is a contribution to climate change. Tons of food is unneccessary produced and in supermarkets large amounts of food that is perfectly edible is thrown away, because they are considered not salable. A lot of the food waste is still of good quality and possible to re-use. The gain of recycling food waste to its intended purpose as food has risen the interest of this project. A life cycle analysis has been made to evaluate the environmental impact of dumpster diving of food waste instead of process it with anarobic digestion, composting or incineration. Three scenarios of dumpster diving has been studied based on three variations of food consumption. The study clearly shows how the food production has a high impact on our environment and that by replacing the consumpsion of food by food waste from dumpster diving gives a very positive effect on the environment. Anarobic digestion and incineration are equally good as recycling options, but can not even nearly compensate for the enviromental impact caused by the food production. Composting is the worst option of the studied scenarios because the product from the process can't ́t compensate for the emissions from the production. Keywords: Food waste, Waste mangement, Dumpster diving, Anarobic digestion, Incineraton, Composting.

Åteg Vandell, Nickolina, Gustavsson, Pia January 2013 (has links)
Summary The purpose of this essay was that we wanted to make a finished material for schools that they can practically use in the classes in a way that inspires the students to the scientific topics in school and for sustainable development. We started to talk about this kind of work a few semesters ago and how we could make the lessons more interesting for the students. We also wanted to make a specialty work that the teachers could take home from the internet and use immediately. At the start of our work we discovered the limitations of the bookshelves and made the decision of using the internet instead.  At the same time we stayed connected to our partner schools to make sure that our work could be used in the classes. The answer that we collected from the teachers showed that we were on the right track and so we continued working and the finished results were a student brochure and a teacher's guide. We believe these will help the classes that are going to use this specialty work to reduce their leftovers and get a bigger knowledge about sustainable development.

Lokalisering av rötningsanläggning på Åland / Location of Anaerobic Digestion Plant on Åland Islands

Allerborg, Marcus January 2015 (has links)
The purpose for this project is to evaluate if anaerobic digestion is possible as a waste management method on Åland islands. The goal with this project was to create a plan for how the waste should be collected to the anaerobic digestion plant and how the end product should be distributed to the farmers. This project have investigated where the plant should be located to reduce the impact of the environment and to make the transportation of the waste and end product easier. This project have also investigate the benefits of using anaerobic digestion instead of composting. A lot of Ålands islands waste is composted or sent to other countries for burning. It affects the environment in a bad way because of its long transportation distance and the formation of greenhouse gases that are released in composting. Svinryggens landfill has been chosen as the location for the plant. It was chosen by a visit to the different sites after taking factors like transportation distance for the waste and product, if there needs to do any ground work before the construction and if there are a lot of neighbors in case of an odor problem. Based on the location a system of gathering and destitution have been decided. Collecting household waste should be collected in a similar way as today. By areas where the people living is spread out like in the county side. There will be a waste station where the people leave there waste and then later picked up and transported to the plant. The station is emptied regularly. In areas where people live closer together the waste can be collected by their homes. Collection of manure will be happen in a storage place which is located close to the farmers. The farmers will leave the manure in exchange of the digestate. The collection will occurs on scheduled dates to reduce the storage time. To use anaerobic digestion instead of composting will give some advantages. Less environmental impact of greenhouse gases because of the gases that are released during anaerobic digestion have a lover global warming potential then the gases that are formed during composting. A anaerobic digestion plant on Åland would release 3 101 ton carbon dioxide equivalents while a compost would release 54 503 ton carbon dioxide equivalents. Anaerobic digestion are Anaerobic digestion gives the waste management system a better energy balance then using composting because of the heat that is generated when composting. Better control of the nutrients that will be used for farming which reduces the risk of over-fertilization. The investment for the plant is 24 million SEK. The yearly cost for the plant is 2,7 million SEK. About 2 million SEK is personal costs if the plant dimensioned for 21 760 ton waste. This makes the price 0,09 SEK for every kg, which the digestate should be sold for to cover the yearly cost. The cost can also be decided by taking the nutritional value into account. This makes the price 0,08 SEK per kg based on the nutritional value. This price would not cover the yearly cost for the plant. The nutritional value of the digestate is estimated and that makes it hard to determine if the price of 0,08 SEK per kg is reasonable. The digestate can also be sold with the water removed. This makes the price 2,21 SEK per dry matter to cover the yearly cost for the plant.

Cidh, Malin January 2014 (has links)
The human body is only capable to take care of a fraction of the pharmaceutical compounds a person eats and the rest is excreted, mainly by urine. When the sewage water reaches the wastewater treatment plant it is treated mechanically, chemically and biologically but the wastewater treatment plants are not designed to take care of pharmaceutical residues or organic compounds  from detergents, paint, etc. Based on the chemical and physical properties of the compound it will either leave the plant with the discharge water or end up in the sewage sludge. The sludge is stabilized through anaerobic digestion, dewatered and may then be used as agricultural fertilizer. This study examines if composting of sewage sludge together with other organic matter can improve the sludge by resulting in less odor, high nutrient content and reduced incidence of pharmaceutical residues and undesired organic compounds. Three different kinds of organic matter were tested; horse manure, deep litter manure from cattle and garden compost. Also, three different methods for oxygenation were used and evaluated. In the first method drainage tubes buried in the compost was attached to a fan. The second method also included the drainage tubes but instead of using a fan the air  flowed through the tubes by natural ventilation. In the third method the compost was mixed by an excavator. From regular measurement of the temperature in the composts it was decided which method that generated the highest microbial activity. Before, half-way through and after composting, analyses were performed regarding nutrients and metals to see how the composition of the matter changed during the process of composting and to decide whether the products could be considered as good fertilizers. In the compost with the highest microbial activity analyses of pharmaceutical residues and undesired organic compounds were performed as well  and compared with a reference consisting only sewage sludge that had not been treated in any way to increase oxygenation. Interviews  with farmers and project staff showed that the mixed product was not odor-free but it did not smell as bad and strong as pure sludge that had been stored for an equal amount of time. Analyses of nutrients and metals showed that the mixed products are good fertilizers and their content of metals are below the limit for metals in fertilizers. Horse manure and deep litter manure from cattle gave the best results. Mixing of the compost with an excavator generated highest temperatures  and was the method preferred by the farmers since it was easier to handle the compost when it did not have tubes in it and also the choice of location is free when the operation doesn't depend on access to electricity. Analyses of undesired organic compounds showed that the degradation of phtalates, LAS, organophosphates, triclosan and alkyphenol/alkylphenoletoxylate were bigger in the compost consisting a mix of sludge and deep litter manure from cattle and which was oxygenated by mixing of the matter compared with the reference compost. To verify the result the examination has to be repeated multiple times. Further investigations must be performed on the degradation of pharmaceutical residues. The degradation was bigger in the mixed compost for a majority  of the analyzed substances but in several cases the result was the opposite and in some cases the total amount of the substance increased during composting. The latter is due to the fact that only the primary form of the substances were analyzed and not their metabolites. If a large part of the substance was in the form of a metabolite before composting and transformed back to the primary form during composting it may have looked like there was an increase in the total amount of that substance. For the same reason it is impossible to decide whether a decrease is due to decomposition of the substance or if it is due to formation of metabolites.

Come/post : A Playful Contribution to Rehabilitate Soil

Gunnbjörnsdóttir, Björk January 2020 (has links)
In this project I will explore food waste and how we can study and partake in nature’s ecosystem, in our daily lives, using a playful approach. One-third of all food produced in the world is wasted. Our systems encourage consumeristic behaviours and wastefulness, they encourage exponential growth in preference to circularity. Human disconnection to nature’s ecosystems is resulting in depleting, eroding and polluted soils. Soil is the foundation of life, humans would not exist without it. Our food exists because of soil and we obtain energy from the food we eat - unfortunately, the nutrients in our food are declining due to intensive industrial farming. Compost enhances the soil, nourishes the life within it. We can think of nutrients as our source of energy. This flow of energy in nature goes from soils to plants, to animals, fungi, microorganisms, bacteria and back to its origin - the soil. Organic matter is fundamental to create viable habitat and preserve water in the soil. Why are not all of us composting? How can composting be involved in our everyday life? My ambition is to make a playful and low tech, human-powered composting machine. Where children can collaborate with older generations, together, learning how to turn their food waste to compost, while playing. With low tech machines run by human energy, I implement movements and play to evoke curiosity. While having fun I want to change our thoughts of waste to valuable resources.

Henriksdotter Langer, Lina January 2015 (has links)
The study was made as a final exam in Environmental Science at Malmö högskola. The subject was chosen in co operation with a few of the work force at NSR in Helsingborg and was aiming to investigate the future substance of organic waste in a northwest region in Skåne, Sweden. The waste which is taken care of at Filborna in Helsingborg was mapped out with a material flow analysis due to reveal the flows of materials to and from the construction. The aim with the study was to investigate whether the biological treatment still will be the most optimal solution in the future or if the solid waste will contain only flammable material and thereby the optimal solution will be energy recycling. Due to the varying amount of households which are sorting their organic wadte there were diffuculties to make correct estimates and thereby the results are founded on assumptions. The results are based on statistic material 2002-2006 and a forecast until 2014. They show that it will take another 19 years before the solid waste compound only flammable material. However recycling keeps improving and the forecast will shorten in time.
