Approach to Lighting Design and Light Planning in Constructivist Buildings

Godov, Sergei January 2022 (has links)
Being one of the most significant styles in the architectural avant-garde,  constructivism  introduced  to  the  world  of architecture  a  dozen  principles  that  remain  relevant  and progressive to this day. The  architectural  functionalism  and  purity,  lacking  any disturbances, undertakes Le Corbusier principles and works for the “poetry of a simple form and a philosophy of rationalism”. This way constructivism sets the rules for the internal planning, making this architectural style light and open-like, penetrated by daylight. Trends in contemporary architecture often echo the principles that the constructivists worked on. In terms of lighting design this means on one hand, there is a significant potential for today's architects to benefit from the deeper understanding of daylight planning approaches in constructivist buildings and on the other hand there is an opportunity to update the solutions in the design of artificial lighting. The project aims at identifying the possible lighting design program for these kinds of spaces. From pointing out the key factors to consider, through the analysis of a specific constructivist building, the set of solutions was developed with intention  to  apply  them  in  any  environment  designed  with  the same  principles  as  well  as  to  compliment  constructivism  in renovation projects.

LJUSDESIGNERN OCH ANTIKVARIEN : Olika perspektiv på belysning i en kulturmiljö i anslutning till nybyggt stadsområde / THE LIGHTING DESIGNER AND THE ANTIQUARIAN : Different perspectives on lighting in a cultural environment in connection with a newly built urban area

Liljeström, Sara, Stegemann Berggren, Johanna January 2023 (has links)
Light has the ability to enhance and create character in a place. In several studies, it has been shown that light affects how people experience emotions and atmosphere in both interior and exterior contexts. In addition to this opportunity that light offers, buildings and places run the risk of being overexposed and distorted in their expression with poorly planned lighting. In environments with historical value, lighting becomes more complex due to the tradeoff between preserving the historical values and meeting today's functional requirements. New buildings are planned and built closely connected to environments with cultural and historical values and the problem is reinforced by the fact that there are currently no laws, standards, or guidelines for lighting in such environments. In the present study, lighting designers' and antiquarian's perspectives on lighting in modern urban areas and cultural environments were investigated. The case study was carried out through observations of Tändsticksområdet in Jönköping combined with interviews. Interviewees with subject knowledge or professional categories considered to be relevant to the study were recruited. Observations were carried out on site by the authors to create an understanding of the area's structure and its lighting. The report presents the results of the observations in Tändsticksområdet and the interviews. The observations were carried out according to Percifal, Serial Vision and Lynch cityscape analysis. The general experience of the area changed during the day and evening. The lighting principles and lighting differed between the areas and a clear, physical boundary could be identified in the light. The results of the interviews provided an understanding of lighting from an antiquarian perspective. Lighting is not actively discussed by antiquarians, but there is an awareness of the effects of light if the issue is raised by external parties. Historical design language for luminaires that harmonize with the intended environment can be recommended over a precisely correct historic luminaire. It appeared in the interviews that collaboration between lighting designers and antiquarians is desirable, but not something that is frequently recurring in the respective daily work. The study has been limited by the time frame and the generalizability and applicability of the results are discussed in the report. Semistructured interviews provided the opportunity for indepth study of certain topics, while the observations were carried out using proven methods. The authors believe that more studies need to be carried out in areas with cultural historical values linked to lighting to better understand how light affects cultural environments.

Light as a biophilic medium: Workspaces with no view to nature

Mokeeva Hansson, Elena January 2023 (has links)
A substantial part of our lives is spent in offices where lighting is affecting our well-being and health, even if we are not aware of that. Offices are most commonly illuminated by high intensity ceiling lights or suspended linear luminaries which emit uniform light over our heads and cause glare. In this thesis, I question this practice from perspectives of visual ergonomics and well-being and suggest a biophilic approach to lighting. Biophilic design strategies can guide us in a direction of creating comfortable visual environment and improving our well-being along with boosting work performance and creativity. This thesis explores ways to incorporate biophilic lighting design into workspaces that lack views to nature on a case study of an open office in Stockholm, Sweden. Results of this study support the existing knowledge that downlights cause glare and should not be used above desks where people sit for prolonged period of time. I propose conceptual design solutions for indirect ambient lighting and indirect task lighting which are glare free and tuneable in terms of light intensity and correlated colour temperature. Other suggested biophilic lighting solutions include dappled light and water reflection effects, as well as interactive dynamic digital lighting depicting water movements.

Playgrounds in a New Light : An Exploration of Sustainable Lighting Design for Children’s Outdoor Play Spaces - A case study at Ringmuren preschool

Hultman, Rikard January 2023 (has links)
Two phenomena form the basis for this thesis; bad lighting for children and our connection to nature. The former has somehow largely stayed unchanged through the years, the second one is rapidly changing for the worse. Lighting in spaces designed for children in Sweden often seem like an afterthought focusing on the quantitative aspects, ignoring the qualitative; following standards but often forgetting who the space is meant for. At the same time, cities are becoming denser, making nature something many people actively have to seek out to experience - children’s definition of nature is slowly changing. How can outdoor lighting for children become better? Using the Ringmuren preschool in Uppsala, Sweden, as a case study, this thesis proposes an alternative way of thinking when designing light for children and how it can encourage a connection to nature. The design proposal was made using interviews, site analysis, research and experiments inside a digital twin custom made for RIngmuren preschool. The direct result of this project is a digital twin and a lighting concept, but it also argues that the practicalities of analysing and designing lighting is one thing; getting the people in power to understand why good lighting is important is the first, and largest, hurdle. Producing good, affordable examples of good lighting design that can be applied to varying situations is a good place to start to at the least initiate a discussion.

Savage in limbo a study in lighting design

Haines, Kenneth 01 May 2012 (has links)
Designing the elements of a theatrical production is a unique and often experimental process. This process changes from show to show, and it can be difficult for a viewer to differentiate mistakes from design choices without a background in lighting. That is why it is important to take a look at the design process step by step. Two goals I strove for when designing Savage In Limbo were, how the director's concept blended with a design and if the integrity of the designer's vision was evident on stage. To explore these goals, script analysis and consideration of the director's vision are two very important processes. Additionally, an exploration of the design process will better describe the growth and personal achievements of the design. This thesis will show the process of the lighting design for The University of Central Florida's 2011 production of John Patrick Shanley's Savage In Limbo. The project will highlight the design achievements and the goals explained previously, and create a formal dialogue on this specific design in order to provide insight into the process. When analyzing the design it was important that I assessed the process as well as the product by looking at whether the design met the expectations of the script and audience. This thesis will also explore how my past experiences, education and current skill level have prepared me for this design process in order to create a guideline for others interested in the development of knowledge needed for design.

The challenge for this study is investigate how design can build pleasure experiences beyond the lighting in commercial spaces. For this the Research is not focused in the physiological effects of lighting, already known, but make a approach of how the lighting can contribute in emotions of the user of space. The study of pleasure beyond lighting presents a new conversation in the experience field in the point of purchase and identifies the potential of a space as a projetual increment. For this a exploratory study associated with in-depth interviews with lighting designers show a rich sampling how designers deal with this factors on projects, verifying in the practice the relevance of the designer’s expertise in the resolution of project issues and in the knowledge given the lack of research, come forward other areas.

Håltavla för upphängning av Irislights : Produktutveckling av uppfästningskonstruktion för LED-slinga / Framework for fastening of Irislights : Product development for attachment of LED-trail

Rebecca, Magyar January 2016 (has links)
This report describes a Bachelor Theisis of Science in Innovation and Design, conducted by Rebecca Magyar. The project was carried out for Home Structures Sweden AB directed to their own brand Irislights with Peter Nordin as task manager.   The existing product Irislights consists of one product, a LED trail for indoor use. The product is supposed to be creative in terms of color and pattern and let the customers combine and create a personalized light trail. The project's main task was to generate a fastening function for the existing product with consideration to customer needs. Also develop the chosen soulution with oppurtunity to provide the customer oppurtunity to us their own creativity.   The implementation of the work was based on a survey of future trends in interior design and in the lightning industry, also by analysing customer needs. Requirements was developed after creating understanding about the existing technology in Irislights which affected the chosen concept so it could be practicable in reality. Based on a feasibility study ideas was created which generated a final product suggestion. The chosen concept was presented through sketches, a modell in 3D-CAD , CAD-drawings and a full-scale prototype. The selection of material was also made in the program CES EduPack to give suggestions on an environmentally friendly alternative in terms of energy consumption in the primary production of a material.

Provrumsbelysning / Fitting room lighting

Berndtsson, My, Pettersson, Sara January 2014 (has links)
The fitting room is an important part of a clothing store, it's often where the customer decides if they want to buy the garment or not. Therefore it is important that the customer can feel safe and comfortable when they are trying the clothing. A typical fitting room in Sweden today has only one bright spotlight that emits light either towards the face or from the ceiling above. This study explores possible lighting solutions that take into account the customer's experience in the fitting room. The study aim to increase understanding of the importance of a good light in fitting rooms, so that customers gets a nice experience and that clothes, body shape and facial features are shown in a natural way. The issue therefore included how lighting can affect the customer's perception of the clothing and how the perception of body shape, facial features and the clothes change in different lighting solutions. To answer these questions, observations were made in various clothing stores, followed by an experimental study divided into two parts. The first part was a practical part where trying different lighting directions were tested on a mannequin, which resulted in three selected lighting solutions. The second part was a full-scale study. 15 people evaluated a fitting room with three different lighting solutions. The result demonstrates the importance of natural shadows and contrasts on the face and body and that it is important to consider how light falls and avoid glare. This is done by well-placed or shielded fixtures and by using several different lighting directions. The lighting in fitting rooms should be adapted to the type of clothes and customer group.
