Sensitive fathering as a moderator between maternal depression and adolsecent internalizing and externalizing behaviorAllen, Abigail N. 01 January 2015 (has links)
The current study investigated the importance of a father-adolescent relationship when a mother experiences depressive symptomatology. Specifically, does a sensitive father serve to buffer his adolescent's social-emotional well-being from the potential negative outcomes associated with maternal depression (e.g., depression, anxiety; Bureau, Easterbrooks, & Ruth-Lyons, 2009; Cummings et al. 2005; increased behavior problems and psychopathology; Garstein & Sheeber, 2004)? Secondary statistical analyses were ran on 498 families of adolescents using the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Study of Early Child Care (SECC) longitudinal data set. Results indicate that having a sensitive father does moderate the relationship between a mother who has depressive symptoms and her adolescent daughter's depressive and anxious symptoms. An adolescent girl with a depressed mother will experience fewer anxious/depressed symptoms when she has a father high on sensitivity; however when her father is lower on sensitivity, she will experience more anxious depressed symptoms. The results were not significant for externalizing behavior, thus having a sensitive father did not serve as a buffer between maternal depression and adolescent externalizing symptoms.

Previous issue date: 2006-05-29 / The psychological and medical clinics have evidenced that a significant part of the women go
through some form of depression after childbirth. Researches show that Puerperal depression
occurs in 10-15% of women in the general population; in 60% of these women it represents
the first severe form of depression. This case study intends to understand the
psychodynamism in the puerperal depression, its etiology and its significance in the mother s
history. The clinical material presented is from a psychological evaluation process that had
continuity with a psychoanalytical clinical work. The theoretical work was based on general
bibliographical research and psychoanalysis authors. We researched about the diagnosis of the
puerperal depression and its etiology. We discussed about the environment and the societies
(historically) interference in the intercurrences of the maternity, such as depression. We also
recognized that the way each postpartum women history life constitutes would excessively
influence in the childbirth and in the puerperal. The maternity reactivates the infancy
experiences and, mainly, the primary of the psychic life. The puerperal depression can appear
as result of imperfections in the primitive emotional development of the postpartum women,
mainly with those related to the experience of the depressive position, to the primary
narcissism and the constitution of superego, and, especially, to the experience had in her birth.
The puerperal depression and maternity study are very important because it contributes with
the clinical practice, with all professionals involved with mental health, and with the
influenciará sobremaneira nos desdobramentos do parto e puerpério. A maternidade reativa as
A depressão

Parental separation at birth and maternal depressed mood in pregnancy: associations with schizophrenia and criminality in the offspringMäki, P. (Pirjo) 26 September 2003 (has links)
Abstract
Early risk factors of the antenatal period and infancy have been increasingly linked to psychiatric disorders. The aim of this thesis was to study the associations between very early parental separation and maternal depressed mood in pregnancy on the other hand, and schizophrenia and criminality in the offspring in adolescence and adulthood, on the other, in two data sets.
In the Christmas Seal Home Children Study the index cohort consisted of 3 020 subjects born in Finland in 1945–65 who were temporarily isolated from their family immediately after birth to nursing homes, the Christmas Seal Homes, due to tuberculosis in the family. The average separation time was seven months. For every index subject, two reference subjects were matched for sex, year of birth and place of birth. Data were obtained on schizophrenia from the Finnish Hospital Discharge Register (FHDR) in 1971–98 and on criminal offences from Statistics Finland in 1977–98. The 28-year cumulative incidence of schizophrenia was 1.6% both in the index cohort and in the reference cohort (RR 1.0; 95% CI 0.8–1.4). Both male and female index subjects had committed crimes more commonly than the reference subjects (in men RR 1.3; 95% CI 1.2–1.4; in women RR 1.5; 1.2–2.0). Of the male index subjects 12.1% as compared with only 7.1% of the reference cohort had committed violent offences (RR 1.7; 1.4–2.1).
In the Northern Finland 1966 Birth Cohort mothers of 12 058 babies were asked at mid-gestation at the antenatal clinic if they felt depressed. This general population birth cohort of the children was followed up for 31 years being record-linked with the FHDR covering the years 1982–97 and with the criminal register of the Ministry of Justice up to 1998. We divided the schizophrenia patients into those having a psychotic first-degree relative (schizophrenia patients with familial risk for psychosis FR) and those without one. The cumulative incidence of hospital-treated schizophrenia was 1.3% among the offspring of depressed mothers and 0.9% among the descendants of non-depressed mothers (RR 1.5; 95% CI 0.9–2.4). The prevalence of antenatal depression was 35% in mothers of schizophrenia patients with FR. The respective prevalence was 14% both in the mothers of schizophrenia patients without FR and in the mothers of other cohort members. Both male and female offspring of antenatally depressed mothers were more commonly criminal offenders than offspring of non-depressed mothers (in men adjusted OR 1.5; 95% CI 1.2–1.9; in women OR 1.5; 0.8–3.0). In males, 6.5% with depressed mothers and 3.2% with non-depressed mothers had committed violent offences (adjusted OR 1.6; 1.1–2.4).
Very early separation and mothers' depressed mood in pregnancy are per se unlikely to increase the risk for schizophrenia in the offspring, but seem to be connected to criminal behaviour, especially violent criminality in men.
Pohjois-Suomen 1966 syntymäkohortin 12 058 lapsen äideiltä kysyttiin keskiraskauden aikana äitiysneuvolassa, kokivatko he mielialansa masentuneeksi.

Understanding Fathers’ Roles in South Korea Children’s Negative Emotionality, Mothers’ Depression, and Parental Warmth in Predicting Children’s School Readiness in Low-Income Korean Families: The Role of Fathers’ Positive InvolvementHan, Seunghee, Ko, Kwangman 23 October 2021 (has links)
This study examined how the longitudinal associations among children’s negative emotionality, mothers’ depressive symptoms, parental warmth, and children’s school readiness and whether the associations vary as a function of fathers’ positive involvement in low-income South Korean families. Participants were 399 families including mothers (Mage = 32.54 years at Time 1), fathers (Mage = 35.23 years at Time 1), and children (Mage = 38.92 months at Time 1; 50.5% boys) in the Panel Study on Korean Children. Results revealed that children’s negative emotionality was indirectly associated with their school readiness three years later, through its association with mothers’ depressive symptoms and warmth. Mothers’ warmth mediated the association between mothers’ depressive symptoms and children’s school readiness, and fathers’ warmth mediated the association between fathers’ positive involvement and children’s school readiness. Our findings revealed the family processes underlying children’s school readiness development in low-income Korean family contexts. Our findings also provide information useful for efforts to detect family risks and to establish family policies to promote low-income children’s school readiness.

Maternal depression and children’s cognitive development : the reasons and conditions of their associationsAhun, Marilyn N. 07 1900 (has links)
Context: Cognitive development is an important building block of health and wellbeing because it equips individuals with the necessary skills to increase control over and improve their health as they age. To ensure healthy cognitive development, we need to better understand how the early childhood environment influences development. Maternal depression in early childhood is a prevalent (11-25%) public health problem and a robust risk factor for poor cognitive outcomes in the child. However, there remain important gaps in our understanding of the longitudinal mechanisms through which it influences children’s cognitive outcomes. Understanding why and for whom this association exists can inform the development of interventions to promote healthy child development.
Objectives: The overall aim of this dissertation is to examine mediating and moderating factors of the association between maternal depression and children’s cognitive development using the Developmental Model for Understanding Mechanisms of Transmission as a framework. Specific objectives – each corresponding to a research paper forming the body of this dissertation – are to: (1) summarize existing evidence on mediators of the association between maternal depression and children’s cognitive development; (2) examine the mediating role of children’s school experiences in the association between maternal depression and academic performance, including the moderating role of child’s sex in these associations; (3) examine the role of gene-environment mechanisms in the association between maternal depression and children’s cognitive school readiness; and (4) perform a meta-analysis of the moderating role of child’s sex in the association between maternal depression and cognitive outcomes across childhood and adolescence.
Methods: Systematic review and meta-analytic methods were used to address objectives 1 and 4. For objective 2, data from the Québec Longitudinal Study of Child Development were used. Maternal depression was self-reported (between child’s ages 5 months and 5 years); peer victimization and school engagement were parent, teacher, and child-reported (6-10 years); and academic performance was assessed when children were 12 years. Data from the Québec Newborn Twin Study were used for objective 3: self-reported maternal depression (6 and 18 months) and assessment of children’s cognitive school readiness (5 years). Structural equation models, adjusted for confounders where necessary, were used to estimate associations in both cohorts.
Results: The studies in this dissertation show that (1) only a handful of studies have examined mediators of the association between maternal depression and cognitive development, with most identifying maternal cognitions, behaviours, and affect as a mediator; (2) school engagement mediates the association between maternal depression and academic performance in girls only; (3) genetic contributions to children’s cognitive school readiness decrease – while environmental contributions increase – as the level of maternal depression increases; and (4) sex moderates the association between maternal depression and cognitive development, with boys at higher risk of poor cognitive outcomes.
Conclusion: These findings suggest that addressing maternal cognitions, behaviours, and affect can help mitigate the negative effect of maternal depression on children’s cognitive outcomes at the population level. They also suggest that boys are more negatively affected by maternal depression, and that for girls, addressing the impact of maternal depression on their school engagement may lead to improved cognitive outcomes. Further research on additional mediators and moderators can help strengthen our understanding of the association between maternal depression and children’s cognitive development.

Parental separation and child adjustment : longitudinal perspective and risk factorsDi Stefano, Gessica 03 1900 (has links)
Despite the large body of research supporting the idea that children who experience their parents’ separation encounter more emotional and behavioral difficulties than children who grow up in continuously intact homes, several questions remained to be investigated. Specifically, empirical evidence does not lead to clear conclusions regarding the time of onset of the adjustment difficulties experienced by children whose parents separate. Furthermore, it is not clear whether it is the separation per se that leads to these difficulties, or whether other factors can explain this association.
The present thesis is made up of two empirical articles. The first examines the role of gender and age at the time of separation in children’s pre- and post-separation adjustment. The second article aims to disentangle the role of parental and contextual factors, and that of parental separation, in predicting child adjustment.
Participants were from the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development (QLSCD, 1998-2006). At every wave of the QLSCD, a structured interview with the mother allowed to assess children’s levels of hyperactivity/ impulsivity, anxiety, and physical aggression. During this interview, mothers also answered questions regarding the quality of their parenting and their household income. Finally, a self-report questionnaire was administered to mothers in order to assess their own symptoms of depression and anxiety.
The first study included 143 children from separated families and 1705 children from intact families. Two categories of children were created according to whether separation occurred between ages 2 and 4, or between ages 4 and 6. Child adjustment variables were assessed at one time point prior to parental separation and at two time points following separation. The results of this first paper demonstrated that prior to separation, children of intact and separated families did not differ significantly with regards to their levels of hyperactivity/impulsivity and anxiety. However, children whose parents separated had significantly higher hyperactivity/impulsivity and anxiety levels after the occurrence of separation. Physical aggression was not further increased following parental separation, but was higher in children who experienced separation, irrespective of time. No gender or age differences were found in children’s pre- and post- separation adjustment.
The second study included 358, 8 year-old children who had previously experienced parental separation, and 1065 children of the same age who lived in consistently intact homes since birth. After controlling for child gender, results demonstrated that once the contribution of maternal symptoms of depression and anxiety, parenting quality and household income was accounted for, parental separation was no longer associated with child anxiety and physical aggression. However, the relationship between separation and hyperactivity/impulsivity remained significant over and beyond what was contributed by the other variables.
The results presented in the articles are discussed, and their implications are highlighted.
