The Cockett Syndrome (CS) is due to an extrinsic compression of the common left iliac vein (CLIV) by the common right iliac artery (CRIA). Consequently, there is a development of intraluminal lesions. This crossing between the artery and the vein is considered a usual anatomic condition; however, in about 29% of the population it may become symptomatic. The symptoms caused by the CS are: edema, pain, venous claudication, hyperemia, varicose veins e ulcers, being possible also to evolve with complications such as venous thrombosis, pulmonary emboli and more rarely with Flegmasia Cerúlea Dolens. Until today there´s no consensus about the best way to treat patients with CS in either the presence or the absence of CLIV thrombosis, it has been dividing opinions whether the clinical or the endovascular treatment should be done. Preferably, some authors choose the endovascular techniques in all cases and suggest that it be performed, in the attempt of improving the venous flow thus avoiding later complications. In short term the results of the endovascular treatment with stents, have shown excellent patency, although some of them are associated to the use of antiplatelet, anticoagulants and to the conventional clinical treatment with compression stocking. Objective: the present study had as goal to compare the results of the patency and the complication rate occurred in patients bearing the CS, treated with angioplasty and stent, in the presence and absence of the CLIV thrombosis, using the Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis in the observational studies. Method: It has been used the recommendations of the manual Cochrane Handbook for Intervention Reviews which orients the production of systematic reviews using as reference for the choice of the method. The production if this dissertation and manuscript has been based on the MOOSE statement to assure that all phases of the study be reported with clarity. The data bases used were: Medline, EMBASE, LILACS, Scopus, Scielo, Pubmed and, Web of Science. The date of the last search was April 6th 2017. This research includes the study of two main groups, both treated with angioplasty and stent: in the G1: it has been included patients with CS without CLIV thrombosis and in the G2: it has been included patients showing CS without CLIV thrombosis. Results: From 250 articles, it has been selected three comparative observational studies, being the total number of analyzed patients equal to 243. In these selected works it has been associated the use of antiplatelet, anticoagulants during the period from 3 to 12 months and the use of the compression stocking. The primary patency, respectively, in G1 and G2 has been of 93.4% and 89.2% (OR 0.55 (95% IC [0.15, 2.06], P= 0.374; I2=29%, P=0.24). And the secondary patency, respectively, in G1 and G2 has been of 93.5% and 82.06% (OR 0.50, 95% IC [0.05, 4.72], P= 0.54; I2=69%, P=0.04). Even though statistically not relevant in both patencies, it can be observed a tendency in the occurrence of a greater patency in patients from G1. In relation to the complications in the total, there has been difference being greater G2 in relation to the G1. Conclusion: The results obtained in the study of systematic review, have shown that the endovascular treatment is effective in short and long terms, but it suggests that in group 1 the patency is discreetly greater than in group 2, with less complications.

Analýza a komparace ženských postav v amerických románech Jamese Fenimora Coopera a Luise May Alcottové / Analysis and comparison of female characters in American novels of James Fenimore Cooper and Louise May Alcott

Cibulková, Tereza January 2016 (has links)
This thesis is focused on the representation and characterization of female characters in the novel The Deerslayer from The Leatherstocking Tales pentalogy from James Fenimore Cooper in contrast to the concept of female characters in the book from Louisa May Alcott Little Women. There is analyzed images of female fictional heroines living in the American wilderness in the years 1740-1805, and these findings are compared with the representation of women in the 19th century domestic novel Little Women. The way of creating female characters is analyzed in relation to the other characters, the space in which they live, the storyline and contemporary values. This analysis should in a literary historical aspect reveal how much the role of a woman becomes a mere fulfillment of a simplified scheme and how it also has many meanings of full-fledged components in literary work. The author of this thesis also focuses on the influence of the environment on the formation of female characters and tracks their role not only in American novels but also in the society. Key words woman, gender, novel, cult of True Womenhood, James Fenimore Cooper, Louise May Alcott, topoi of the forest, home, american wildernes

VALIDATION OF MAY-GRÜNWALD GIEMSA IN THE STAINING OF CYTOLOGY SAMPLESOPTIMIZATION OF IN VITRO-DIAGNOSTICS, DUE TO NEW EU REQUIREMENTSKARIN SVANTESSONSvantesson, K. Degree project in biomedical laboratory science, 15 higher education credits. Malmö University: Faculty of Health and Society, Department of Biomedical Sciences, 2023.Cancer is caused by abnormal cell division, but also occurs by chronic inflammation. In order to determine whether the patient has cancer, different types of diagnostics are required, where cytology diagnostics are included. With thehelp of different dye solutions, cancer cells in serous fluids can be stained and detected, allowing for diagnosis and treatment. May-Grünwald Giemsa (MGG) is part of the Romanowsky staining techniques and has been used since the 19th century. The dye solution provides a high-quality visualization of the cells' morphology and is used in histology-, hematology- and cytology diagnostics.Laboratories that work with in-vitro diagnostics (IVD) must use products that are in vitro-diagnostics regulated (IVDR). In 2017 it was determined that within five years all laboratories in the European Union (EU) performing IVD must work with IVDR labeled products to achieve EU directives. The aim of the study was to optimize a new dye stain of MGG for cytology samples, so that the IVDR requirements are achieved at the pathology laboratory in Skövde. The study included several attempts to determine which of the staining protocols produced the best quality of the cells in cytology preparations. During the study, it has also been shown that various factors can negatively affect the results. If sample material is too old or mishandled, it can lead to poor staining of the cells. Results from the study showed that the Histo Lab (HL) staining protocol gave goodresults after modification of the composition and time of staining.

Doppelte Spiele / Die chinesisch-amerikanische Schauspielerin Anna May Wong als Schwellen- und Kippfigur des transnationalen Kinos

Li, Yumin 07 March 2024 (has links)
This dissertation examines the life and work of the actress Anna May Wong (1905-1961) through the lens of discourse on race and gender in the USA, Germany, and England. Vice versa: it interrogates the discourse of race and gender by engaging the figure of Wong and her work both on screen and off. Wong’s decades-long career is extraordinary in the sense that, as a Chinese American, she achieved success in the American and European film industry in spite of gendered and racially-based resistance, an experience that her films explore in ambivalent ways. Wong serves as a prism in this dissertation to explore the ways in which racial and gendered boundaries were drawn during the span of her career, but with a specific focus on the films that she made between 1922-1937, which were shot in the United States and Europe. An interrogation of the manner in which Wong appears in these films, as well as the films’ reception(s), reveals a web of complex interweavings, intersections, and ruptures along sexual, gendered, and racialized lines. During the period on which this dissertation focuses, geopolitical power relations between Europe, China, and the United States shifted significantly with dramatic effects on the construction of difference, which the following project explores. The dissertation interrogates, therefore, the relationship between her life and the global context of her work. Her micro-history serves as a fulcrum for examining the larger history of bordering, appropriation, and identity negotiation(s) between Europe, the United States, and China. The investigation of Anna May Wong as a unique phenomenon reveals, on the one hand, a discursive and material history of raced and gendered constructions of difference. On the other hand, her work consistently engages a suspenseful type of excess, which demonstrates the ways in which the “other” is always already embedded in the “self”.

The invention of the new culture movement in 1919

Forster, Elisabeth January 2014 (has links)
The expression ‘New Culture Movement’ was born in summer 1919, in the intersections of academic debate, political activism, media coverage and intellectual marketing strategies. I have traced the emergence of the phrase and the discourses around it, using sources like journals, newspapers, student essays, advertisements and conference protocols. The New Culture Movement was a buzzword, deployed by practically-minded but lesser-known intellectuals to promote agendas they had held long before its invention. Many notions we associate with the Movement until today already surrounded it in 1919: for example, that it was connected to the political protests of ‘May Fourth,’ and driven by star intellectuals such as Hu Shi and Chen Duxiu. But closer scrutiny reveals that the New Culture Movement and its network of associations were a construct, an amalgam of newspaper stories and intellectual marketing ploys: the connection to May Fourth was created by newspapers; the intellectuals at the periphery drew upon Hu Shi’s and Chen Duxiu’s prestige to add glamour to their own agendas. Nevertheless, the New Culture Movement shaped China’s 20th century. As only some agendas could credibly be sold as the Movement, it catalysed the plethora of competing agendas that had emerged since the 19th century to tackle the challenges of a changed world order. The New Culture Movement later became a founding myth of ‘Modern China’ and was regarded as the obvious result of global trends towards ‘modernisation,’ which visionary intellectuals recognised. But more recent literature has decentred the Movement, noted a longer history of its ideas and the careerism of its participants. I drive this point further by showing that, at the Movement’s very core, were practically-minded business and marketing strategies, deployed by numerous, lesser-known actors. It was in this way that the course for 20th-century China and one of its founding myths was set.

Pražské motivy v díle Karoliny Světlé a Jana Nerudy / Prague motives in the work of Karolina Světlá and Jan Neruda

Blažková, Michaela January 2014 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the work of two Prague natives: Karolina Světlá and Jan Neruda and their conception of image of the Prague. The thesis target is to find out, which role prague motives play in the work of both writers due to a fact, that both writers were born in Prague. At Jan Neruda we concentrate on his feuilletons, at Karolina Světlá we focus on her autobiographical work except two of them. First part of thesis focuses on the life and fate of both writers and their entering in the literature. Second part is concentrated on the analysis of their representative works. The target of these analysis is to find, which role Prague plays in particular works. In the final part we try to compare the interpretation of Prague motives of both writers. We try to find the diferrences and identical features as well. Karolina Světlá approaches Prague history, with all its forgotten tales. On the other hand Neruda's Prague is current and alive. Also the diference of both conceptions lies in the themes. Světlá has a aims toward romanticism and nobility, Neruda is consistently realistic and he embraces the stress of everydayness. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Básnické miniatury jako způsob hledání nového začátku v čínské poezii 20. století / Miniature Poems as a Means of Seeking New Beginings for Chinese Poetry in the 20th Century

Krechloková, Patricie January 2012 (has links)
This thesis deals with miniature poems, which appeared at the beginning of the May fourth movement, as a genre of modern chinese poetry and was redoscovered by the misty poets after the Cultural revolution. Part of a brief introduction to the literary- historical contexts of both periods are short biographies of two representative poets of this genre, Bing Xin and Gu Cheng. Eventually the form and themes of miniature poems are introduced. The main part of this thesis is a comparative study of Bing Xin's and Gu Cheng's miniature poems. The thesis concludes, that Gu Cheng refines and eleborates the artistic value of the miniature poem. Part of the study is a criticism of primary source, as well as a summary of the current state of research. Key words: Modern poetry, Bing Xin, Gu Cheng, místy poetry, May fourth movement

Writing Rhodesia : young girls as narrators in works by Doris Lessing and Tsitsi Dangarembga

Thomas, Jane McCauley 22 June 2001 (has links)
Doris Lessing and Tsitsi Dangarembga write fiction set in Zimbabwe, the former Southern Rhodesia. Although Lessing grew up as a white settler and Dangarembga, a generation later, as part of the colonized African population, the women sometimes address similar issues. Both write of young girls trying to find a speaking position; under colonialism, what they want to say cannot be said. Lessing's first-person stories differ from her more distant third-person works, which show how white settlers either refuse to recognize their own complicity within the colonial system or accept living a compromised life. Her younger narrators are as yet innocent; the stories often focus on the character's discovery of her own responsibility as a member of the white ruling class. However, these girls have varying levels of self awareness; some seem unaware of the implications of their stories, while others catch glimpses of their own complicity, yet are unable to act. Although Lessing herself is highly critical of colonialism, her stories sometimes risk textually replicating and thus reinforcing the values she criticizes. Dangarembga's first-person novel Nervous Conditions (1988) portrays Tambu, a girl from a poor African family, and her more modern cousin Nyasha. Tambu narrates the story as an adult, Although Nyasha resents colonialism and her patriarchal family, Tambu proceeds with her education, attempting to ignore the injustice around her. Because of the use of an adult narrator, the reader sees what Tambu the child cannot see. Nyasha is unable to voice her concerns; her protest surfaces as anorexia. Both Lessing's and Dangarembga's characters have difficulty speaking because colonialism does not include a space for what they want to say; even if they spoke, their words could make little difference. Lessing' s characters can "speak" only by leaving the country, as Lessing herself did. Dangarembga's Tambu may or may not have "escaped" her situation; by the book's publication, Rhodesia had overcome white rule, and it may be this political change that allows Tambu to tell her story. / Graduation date: 2002
