The creation of a multi-cultural identity for window displays in Durban's fashion retail shop fronts

Lichkus, Sarah Christine 17 August 2012 (has links)
Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Masters Degree in Technology: Fashion Design, Durban University of Technology, 2012. / The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility of creating shop window displays focussing on a South African identity in the Durban region. The impetus for the study stemmed from the design of the Constitutional Court which features elements of South African culture. This study challenges the contemporary notion of presenting window displays using primarily Western influences and proposes the use of fashion imagery and cultural identity currently dominating South Africa. The study argues against corporate fashion stereotypes and champions a representation of an eclectic multi-cultural South African society. In this respect key theories of identity, culture, and design were explored. A qualitative methodology was conducted utilising interview and observation approaches to obtain data. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with twelve local professionals specialising in the fields of art, design, fashion and architecture to obtain their expert opinions. The data was analysed by clustering information into themes to establish the findings. Interview findings revealed that shop window displays should accommodate local imagery appropriate to the South African context. Observing two local production houses, namely Hirt & Carter and Barrows in Durban provided insights for a backdrop creation for the practical component of the study. The practical comprised of producing retail shop installations and a visual catalogue representing findings drawn from the study. The catalogue was used to illustrate the results of investigating a national image and identity that could be intrinsic to window display creation in South African fashion retail shop fronts. / National Research Foundation

The importance of atmospherics in the fashion industry

Morkel, Anel 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2011. / Customers expect from a store that displays expensive products to make an effort to decorate the store with atmospheric elements to create a prestige atmosphere. The four stores that the participants visited target upper-class customers and display expensive products. One of the participants mentioned that the atmosphere in Hip Hop remind her of a take-away restaurant. Hip Hop was making no effort to decorate its stores to create a hedonic experience for its customers. They were relying on their well-known brand name to sell their products. In the long run, this strategy will not be effective as the competition gets tougher and more brands enter the market. High-class fashion stores focus more on hedonic customers. Customers do not need to buy expensive clothes as there are many discount stores that could fulfil their clothing needs. In order for high-class fashion stores to attract customers they need to create a hedonic experience for their customers in the store. The customers must want to enter the store and spend time in the store. Atmospheric elements can attract customers to the store and influence the time they spend in the store. It is important that new fashion stores have the right atmospheric design in their stores. New stores cannot rely on a name as this is not well known. The atmospheric design of a store tells customers what they can expect in the store. One of our main findings is that there is a difference between the atmospheric designs in shopping centres. The fashion stores in the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town use atmospherics in their stores to create a prestige atmosphere for their upper-class customers. On the other hand, the atmospheric designs in the fashion stores in Canal Walk, which attracts middle-class customers, had a lower quality and were not regarded to be as prestige as those of the V&A Waterfront stores. The most expensive merchandise was also found in the fashion stores in the V&A Waterfront. Most of the stores in our sample use some atmospheric elements. However, the combination of the atmospheric elements in the stores did not always match. The participants viewed the atmospheric design as a whole and it was important to them that all the atmospheric elements fit together. The participants were noticeably disappointed with a store that did not make use of atmospherics to enhance its customers’ shopping experience. They found the store too plain as the storeowner did not make any effort to decorate the store. When they entered a store that did make use of atmospherics, the participants mentioned that they would like to spend more time in the store.

Financeirização do capital no ensino superior privado com fins lucrativos no Brasil (2007-2012) / Capital financialization in higher education with private profit in Brazil (2007-2012)

Costa, Fábio Luciano Oliveira 11 August 2016 (has links)
This work has as main objective the research about the process of financialisation of capital in higher education of the for-profit private sector in Brazil (2007-2012), through the studies of educational companies Anhanguera Educacional Participações S.A., the Estácio Participações S.A. and Kroton Educacional S.A. With the bibliographical revision of works relevant to the theme, how to books, articles, theses, dissertations and texts published in mass media, along with the statistical data provided mainly by governmental institutions and educational undertakings, stardom-discuss the problematics, critically, and insert new theoretical contributions to the educational debate linked to the theme. Even though the matter has aroused concern in recent years an increasing number of researchers, the research on this issue are still quite inadequate. Porto Seguro - BA: o cotidiano do trabalhador e a espacialidade da cidade-mercadoria / Porto Seguro - BA: the worker daily life and the spaciality of the city-commodity

Pereira, Aleselma Silva 07 February 2018 (has links)
This study presents an analysis of the daily life of workers living in the city of Porto Seguro, especially the grapiúna migrant worker - those workers from the cocoa region - who migrated to that urban space from the end of 1980, becoming a resident of the periphery and main labor force of the activities relative to the tourism (ACT), which are marked by the instability of seasonality - low and high season. As background for the analysis of the worker\'s daily life, it is the city that receives the annual flow of about one million tourists. In this city, which has been consecrated since 1980 as a \"holiday place\", the local worker is related to other middle-class workers who enjoy the non-work time through work; they are consumers of this space-time which, in this sense, is also, commodity. In this city, a space produced by rationality, hegemonic agents use the metalanguage resources to affirm it as a \"space of leisure\". With this, the alienation of the worker is amplified, as well as the consumption of/in the tourist city is also increased, and the consumer of this space becomes far removed from the contradictions and conflicts of the local reality. But this worker, even when faced with the deprivation of urban life and the right to the city, elaborates practical strategies, at both individual and collective level and, through these strategies, experiences the use of the space. In this sense, urban praxis, as a process, takes place in the appropriation that is a spatial experience, as Lefebvre approaches in the theory of the production of space. The worker does not effectively overcome the labor-leisure breakup, but produces residual and resistances that oppose the homogenizing forces.

The number-location association and its marketing implication. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / ProQuest dissertations and theses

January 2010 (has links)
At last, this dissertation considers another marketing implication of this number-location association, namely the compatibility effect. In experiment 7, we find that people perceive a discount as more attractive when the two prices are actually posited in compatible locations (original price-right side; discounted price-left side) than in incompatible locations. Similarly, experiment 8 demonstrates that people are more likely to patronage a supermarket when the supermarket's slogan about low price is shown on the left side of a display than on the right side, and this effect is mediated by the subjective fluency feeling people felt at the time they process the advertisement. / Given a display, people usually think that large numbers should be located on the top or on the right hand side of the display, whereas small numbers should be posited at the bottom or on the left (Wood and Fischer 2008). / Given this number-location association, this dissertation secondly intends to apply it to the field of marketing, and to use three experiments to explore how and why location of product image can influence people's price judgment. The results of experiment 4 show that consumers think that the market price of a product is higher if the product's image is shown on the right side of a display than on the left side; experiment 5 and experiment 6 further indicate that the location of product image can only influence consumers' price judgment, but cannot influence quality judgment. / Key Words: Number-location association, Simulation, Perceptual Symbol Systems (PSS), Price perception. / This dissertation firstly aims to provide new evidence for this number-location association. Experiment 1 demonstrates that people incorrectly remember that large numbers appear to the right of the locations they actually were shown while small numbers appear to the left ofthe locations than they actually were presented; experiment 2 and experiment 3 show that people estimate there are more pieces in a pile of object when the pile of object is presented on the right side of a display than on the left side. / Cai, Fengyan. / Adviser: King Man Hui. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 73-03, Section: A, page: . / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2010. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 139-144). / Electronic reproduction. No. of bitstreams: 1 Douglas Aparecido Bueno.pdf: 1459681 bytes, checksum: 0e3879644ba3b9b628d1ff856626c91c (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-05-11 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The thesis deals with the spectacle of Guy Debord theory under the aegis of its artistic, political and philosophical influences, putting in relief their main contributions to the analysis and overcoming of the spectacle. The spectacle, to Debord, is a relationship alienated for social and historical construction, which overcomes the media criticism, as is commonly assumed. The thesis reveals that the theory of the spectacle, in its origin, is a philosophical reflection on the story time, and in the light of hermeneutics interprets own theory on that basis. Analyze the theory of the spectacle, from the standpoint of time and story ideas, it offers a way to resolve the hegelian marxism of Guy Debord. The hegelian marxism Debord connects, in theory, its theoretical and philosophical interests in the concepts of strategy, chance and play, from the existential principles and based on these issues, investigates and theorizes the practice, political action in time and social history as a means to overcome the spectacle, or give you a new phase. Furthermore, to the extent that delimits the theory of this epistemological framework, it is apparent deficiencies. The theory of the spectacle is based on the unified separation of the actions of the subject (historical and social) and social interpretation under the same heading, which in turn replaces the Marxian analysis of capital as an antagonistic social relationship rather than the abstract opposition between homogenized and alienated consciousness of history and the world. Although this aspect apparently theoretical problem is, the notions of subjectivity, time and history significant role for social analysis. Putting in relief the Guy Debord’s position that all social action and every theory must be considered as strategic interventions, and that every theory must be an invitation to overcome them, the thesis takes up the hegelian marxism Debord to suggest spectacle that the theory is a sui generis moment within a historical action design. This means that all Debord’s theory provides a collective political will model and suggests a reflection on the possibility of this hermeneutic be developed / A tese analisa a teoria do espetáculo de Guy Debord sob a égide de suas influências filosóficas, colocando em relevo as suas principais contribuições para a análise e superação do espetáculo.

The influence of the interactions between Craft and their merchandise offices on the sampling process : A Case study of Craft

BÖRDGEN, HEIKE January 2014 (has links)
: Craft, a Swedish sport textile company, uses synergies of its parent company New Wave Group through common merchandise offices in Vietnam and China. As the relationship to the merchandise office creates a complex situation, the two research questions were elaborated of how the interactions in terms of information flow and collaboration influence the flow of the sampling process and how the situation could be improved. A qualitative case study design gives a deep insight in the specific situation of Craft. Information is gathered through company visits, a survey, internal documents and open interviews. The information flow influences the sampling process, in terms of late information, word-by-word translations and mismatches in terms of educations. This causes not-proper decision-making. The collaboration is mainly evaluated as satisfying. Adapting Christopher’s (2000) agility concept to Craft’s situation, issues as supplier relations, information sharing and the de-coupling point can be addressed. Practically joint product development, free information flow is important. Further collaboration within the supplier choice, more frequent and longer visits from both sides could improve the situation, as well as long-term-employments. / Program: Master programme in Applied Textile Management

Maria da Conceição Araujo Castro 12 August 2008 (has links)
This thesis analyses the mobilization of rural workers from the West of Pará State, Santarém City, which occurs due to Amazons land occupation to the development of activities such as forest extraction (wood), livestock and grain production (agribusiness). Most of times, the accomplishment of these activities has as an antecedent process, the grilagem of public land, in which illegal and cutting mechanisms to the private appropriation of these lands take place, such as the utilization of false documents and violence. The confrontations with rural populations that so long lived in that region, even for generations, have been inevitable, and for this reason, the tensions are constant. Activities as wood extraction and livestock production, which have already been developed for more time, gained impulse with the arrival of agribusiness, since 1997. The land, which in this process has been considered merchandise, is in the center of land appropriation problems and conflicts of that region. The State has a significant presence in that context, since before, when it put in practice developing projects from the seventies of the 20th century, and today, when it creates conditions to accomplish agricultural production projects, having as basis the formation of large estates. It has been tried to show that the work mobilization occurs due to this land occupation. It has also been shown that the new ways to produce and to work are part of a proposal that breaks old social relations, customs and spatial organization, which were moulded in the extractive production of that region for several centuries
