The main objective of this research is to make a study and a comparative discussion on how two important social characters are portrayed by the Brazilian cinema in a set, delimited, of movies: the Metallurgical and the Motoboy. Through an aesthetic and narrative analysis, investigating as filmmakers cast their eyes on contemporary reality and built a visual imagery of these professional categories. Based on authors like Bernardet (2003), Tomizaki (2007), Eisenstein (1990), Pudovkin (1961), Silva (2011), Nichols (1991) among others discussing the issue, we analyze six Brazilian documentaries depicting the life and saga of the protagonists of this study. It also refers to collate domestic production in relation to foreign filmmakers that have produced on the subject, about related films such as The Working class goes to paradise (1971), Easy rider (1969) and other examples. The analysis includes a discussion of technical issues ranging from cameras placement, taken to the assembly and soundtrack. Among findings, it can be observed that, while the metallurgical built an identity to society, couriers remain a disturbing unknown, characters who come who knows where, living in an eternal and cruel fate, without future prospects, working in a dangerous profession and somewhat discredited by the population. The research process of the thesis are the basis and the guidance for a new documentary to be finalized and intended as a cine reflection on the progress and setbacks on the expectations and disappointments of industrial and urban modernization project of Brazilian society.

A imagem
cinematográfica da cidade do final do século XX é
analisada nos filmes: Ônibus
174 (2002), de José Padilha; Estorvo (2000), de Ruy Guerra
e Edifício Master
(2002), de Eduardo Coutinho. / [en] This paper aims at analyzing the cinematography image of
the city of Rio
de Janeiro in two moments: the 20th Century, for its
political relevance as a
consequence of the republican project for the city, and
nowadays, reflecting upon
current cinematography images that are significant for the
carioca metropolis, as a
counterpoint and assessment of the dreams contained in the
republican desire.
For the early 20th Century, films shot in the 10´s and
20´s have been selected from
research conducted in the films libraries of the Modern

[en] THE TELEVISION EXPERIENCE AS A MEDIATOR OF CHILDRENS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CINEMA / [pt] A EXPERIÊNCIA TELEVISIVA COMO MEDIADORA DA RELAÇÃO DE CRIANÇAS COM O CINEMAWINSTON DE CARVALHO VIEIRA DO SACRAMENTO 03 November 2008 (has links)
desconheciam a experiência
de expectador cinematográfico numa sala de projeção. Trata-
se de um recorte
produzido no âmbito da segunda fase da pesquisa
desenvolvida pelo Grupo de
Pesquisa em Educação e Mídia - GRUPEM, intitulada:
Crianças, televisão e
valores morais. Este estudo, de caráter exploratório,
baseia-se em observações de
campo, oficinas e entrevistas, individuais e coletivas,
e possibilidades do
[en] The aim of this study is to identify, describe and analyze
the presence of
possible crossovers and mediations of children`s television
viewing in their
relationship with widescreen cinema. This study has been
carried out with a group
of approximately thirty children aged between 8 and 13
years who had never been
in the position of viewers in a projection room before.
This study integrates the
second phase of the research developed by the Education and
Media Research
Group (GRUPEM), entitled: Children, television and moral
values. This
exploratory study was based on field observations,
workshops and individual or
group interviews; its registers - casebooks, audio and
video recordings - were
also submitted to a qualitative analysis. From the
theoretical perspective, it points
out the Theory of Mediations, which guides reception
studies in Latin America, as
a significant approach to problem analysis and
understanding, since it deals with
the relative roles, qualifications and possibilities of the
emitter, perceives the
receptor as an active participant in his/her relationship
with the media and
analyzes the factors that interfere in this process. The
results show that television
mediations have definitely altered the texture of these
children`s everyday
experiences. There is significant evidence that the
television holds a distinguished
position in the processes of generation of meaning in their
experiences with the
cinema.

Segue a
[en] This work deals with the film adaptation as a transcreation, ie., as a
creative interpretation on the part of screenwriter/directors from the source text
of Julio Cortázar’s writings. It follows the analysis of literacy’s and film’s
language and narrative and how the modern cinema has created a new way of
telling stories through visual means. It also addressed the modern literature and
cinema in dialogue with the analysis of simulation and mimese through a
creative interpretation, and the adaptation as an intertextual palimpsest. Finally
we conducted an analysis of the stories that served as inspiration to the directors
who made a transcreative adaptation from Cortázar’s works and the films
properly.

[en] One of the main aspects of contemporary Brazilian society is the major production
and proliferation of images, speeches and narratives about the periphery and its culture. The
mass communication media presents itself as the most legitimate reality advisers of the
periphery to the social imaginary. But we can raise the following questions: how the media
represents the culture of the periphery? Is there a kind of glamour or is there a
demonization of the elements of the slum? Which images are beyond the media cliches?
This research aims to analyze the pictures and speeches of the media on the “carioca” funk.
We highlight the stereotypes imaging of local cinema involving the funk movement against
crime, drug dealing, violence, sex and irresponsibility on precocious youth.

[en] IN SEARCH OF A NEW PORTUGUESE CINEMA / [pt] EM BUSCA DE UM NOVO CINEMA PORTUGUÊSMICHELLE CUNHA SALES 03 February 2010 (has links)
desses escritores, o objetivo central e estruturante deste trabalho é re-discutir e
apresentar a tetralogia do cinema neo-realista português e re-pensar a gênese do
novo cinema.
destes dados. / [en] In search of a new Portuguese cinema talks about the genesis of this
movement that became known as this is a huge transformation in the way of
seeing and making movies in Portugal. As shown clearly, many debates about the
social function of art grew out of discussions on the impasse reached between the
art of modernist bias, and the other features neorealists. The dual link between
cinema and literature, in Portugal, it is not only through numerous literary
adaptations throughout the twentieth century, but also with the work of writers
and poets within the field of film production. Arguing over the exact role of some
of these writers, the central and structuring of this work is re-discuss and display
the portuguese neorealist cinema tetralogy and re-think the genesis of the new
cinema. The new film, as stated here, born of the churning of the Portuguese
cultural life over the years 1950, against the consensus view, which perceives the
aforementioned decade as the dark years of the Portuguese cinema. The
experience of cinema clubs, a huge spread and propagation of journals, as well as
the performance of Manuel Guimarães, Alves Redol and Leão Penedo are the
starting point for debate about the features of a new film that takes place mainly
due to the throughout the 1950s and 1960s. To this end, the work is of a historical
component that is essential, despite the increased interest is contained in the
interpretation and, above all, in assessing this.

The effect of film sharing on P2P networks on box office salesKęstutis, Černiauskas January 2017 (has links)
Context. Online piracy is widespread, controversial and poorly understood social phenomena that affects content creators, owners, and consumers. Online piracy, born from recent, rapid ITC changes, raises legal, ethical, and business challenges. Content owners, authors and content consumers should benefit from better understanding of online piracy. Improved, better adapted to marketplace and ITC changes content distribution models should benefit content owners and audiences.Objectives. Investigate online piracy effect on pirated product sales. Improve understanding of online piracy behaviors and process scale.Methods. This observational study investigated movie-sharing effect on U.S. box office. Movie sharing was observed over BitTorrent network, the most popular peer-to-peer file-sharing network. Relationship between piracy and sales was analyzed using linear regression model.Results. File sharing was found to have a slightly positive correlation with U.S. box office sales during first few weeks after film release, and no effect afterwards. Most of newly released movies are shared over BitTorrent network. File sharing is a global, massive phenomenon.Conclusions. I conclude that online movie file sharing has no negative correlation on U.S. box office. Slightly positive movie sharing correlation to box office sales could have occurred because sharing rather informs, than substitutes cinema going.

Hur undervisar man om Förintelsen? : En kvalitativ studie om undervisningsstrategier / How should teachers educate students about the Holocaust? : A qualitative study about teaching strategy.Arsovska, Martina January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine how teachers in both secondary school and high school teach about the Holocaust. I have examined how six teachers educate about the Holocaust and I have used qualitative interviews during the process. I have also examined what kind of strategy the teachers apply while teaching. My study shows that there is a big difference in the teaching between the secondary school and the high school. The reason behind the difference is that the teachers in secondary school have more scheduled time for lessons about the Holocaust, in comparison to the teachers in high school. The secondary school teachers examine the students about the Holocaust like an individually subject through discussions and specialization, while the teachers in high school examine the Holocaust like a part of the second world war. Once again the reason for this set-up is lack of time. Another difference is that the secondary school teachers have visited different concentration camps with their students. They have also organized appearance of survivors from the Holocaust. The high school teachers have done none of that. One thing that the secondary school teachers and high school teachers have in common is that they use different kind of movies in their teaching. There is however no pattern in how teachers in the different type of schools use any specific strategy while teaching about the Holocaust. The teachers education is different despite that they follow the same regulatory documents.

Predicting movie ratings : A comparative study on random forests and support vector machinesPersson, Karl January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this work is to evaluate the prediction performance of random forests in comparison to support vector machines, for predicting the numerical user ratings of a movie using pre-release attributes such as its cast, directors, budget and movie genres. In order to answer this question an experiment was conducted on predicting the overall user rating of 3376 hollywood movies, using data from the well established movie database IMDb. The prediction performance of the two algorithms was assessed and compared over three commonly used performance and error metrics, as well as evaluated by the means of significance testing in order to further investigate whether or not any significant differences could be identified. The results indicate some differences between the two algorithms, with consistently better performance from random forests in comparison to support vector machines over all of the performance metrics, as well as significantly better results for two out of three metrics. Although a slight difference has been indicated by the results one should also note that both algorithms show great similarities in terms of their prediction performance, making it hard to draw any general conclusions on which algorithm yield the most accurate movie predictions.
