Marriage of blogs and news: Opposites attract?

Jennings, Ralph Unknown Date (has links)
International news media have gradually added blogs to their primary content over the past five years. The Wall Street Journal, the Christian Science Monitor, Reuters and the Voice of America, for example, use blogs as vehicles to report news. The same media organizations put additional news on paper, on air or on official websites. But blogs are traditionally for personal journals and private opinions. This study analyzes how the mass media are using blogs to convey news and why, as well as the differences between blog posts and traditional news content. A grounded approach to the content of blog posts and traditional content on the South China Sea dispute, an ongoing 2012 news story in Asia from six major international media shows similarities in writing styles, point of view and types of information presented. Comments solicited from journalists give insight into reasons that the mass media run their own blogs and how content is chosen for them. The study suggests that going forward news stories will be written more like traditional non-media blogs and that blogs may be influenced by the disciplined writing of journalists.

News usage practices of Pakistani university students in the networked media environment

Nauman, Saadia Ishtiaq January 2017 (has links)
This thesis aims to examine the News Usage practices of young Pakistani university students in the networked news media environment. The development of internet and its subsequent technologies have played a significant role in the transition from Mass Media towards Networked Media and this transition has directly influenced news usage practices. In Pakistan, almost 99% of the sample population of this research has mobile phones. The introduction of 3G and 4G mobile technologies in 2014 and recent ICT policy initiatives suggests that there are plans to subsidize smart phones in the country, which will further boost the digital environment. The news users in Pakistan now have more choices to follow news from multiple platforms and via multiple devices. There is a networked media ecosystem around users and it is continuously evolving and consequently transforming the news media institutions and the users’ news usage experience. The practice of using news is changing and transforming the user’s news usage experience but the available theoretical framework did not adequately address this, until the emergence of the ‘Theory of Mediatization’. The four main contributors to mediatization theory have been Lundby (2014) Hepp (2009), Hjarvard, (2008), Couldry (2008) and Krotz (2007) .Building on their contribution, and including the valuable addition by Winfried Schulz (2004), I am applying the framework of mediatization to a cohort of university students in Pakistan to investigate their changing news usage practices in the networked media environment. I have adopted a mixed method approach, following the double sequential loops method.

For some companies, we found evidence that the model matches the data and we then priced call and put options using the Monte Carlo method. We obtained significant differences in the mark to market for the options concerning the proposed model when compared to the black-scholes one and, by performing the backtest on the sample using delta-hedge strategies, we got improved results for some scenarios.

Samer i svenska dagstidningar : En innehållsanalys av nyhetsrapporteringen om Europas enda urfolk / Sami in the Swedish Newspapers : Sami in the Swedish Newspapers

Adolfsén, Jennifer, Ragnarsson, Elin January 2017 (has links)
This paper examines the Sami peoples representation in Swedish newspapers. Previous research show that news media holds a growing power in affecting how different groups are perceived and being treated in today’s society. It shows how indigenous people and minorities are limited in the news media and portrayed in a homogeneous and biased way. This study examines to which extent the Sami population is being seen in the Swedish news media, what kind of Sami related news that are being reported and, how the Sami people are being presented. The method used to answer the thesis questions is a content analysis with complementary qualitative and quantitative elements. Articles published in three Swedish newspapers during the period of one year have in this study been examined. The result indicates that Sami culture is given a lot of space in the reported news, while other important events and questions concerning the Sami people are less visible. The result is analyzed on the basis of postcolonial theory, and connection could thus be distinguished between Sweden's historical relationship with the Sami population and the media's presentation of the group.

Military spouses' relationship with media during Operation Iraqi Freedom

Kohler, Alison January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Journalism and Mass Communications / Joye C. Gordon / Military spouses have a complex relationship with news coverage of Operation Iraqi Freedom, the 2003 Iraq War. Utilizing uses and gratifications, hostile media perception, and cognitive dissonance perspectives as a basis, the researcher studied military spouses' media behaviors, perceived benefits of media usage, and whether hostile media perception and cognitive dissonance were present in this convenience sample of military spouses. Thirty military spouses participated in in-depth interviews. The results showed a desire for more positive news stories and less negative news stories about Operation Iraqi Freedom. Hostile media perception and cognitive dissonance responses were noted among participants–especially with regard to the media's tracking totals of soldier and civilian casualties. Military spouses in this sample found military news sources more credible than civilian news sources. They also described using news coverage for the purposes of gaining information, surveillance, political competency and empathy.

Våltäktsmyter i förändring: Bilder av våldtäktsoffer i nyhetsmedia

Johansson, Moa, Keller, Sanna January 2018 (has links)
This study is a qualitative content analysis about sexual violence in news media. The study aims to illustrate how news media construct portrayals of women and men that have been victims of, what the selected newspapers define as rape. The study also intended to analyse how the term rape is used in the selected articles. The empirical data consist of 21 articles, selected from four Swedish newspapers: Aftonbladet, Expressen, Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet. Three theore-tical perspectives have been used throughout the study: social constructivism, victimology and agenda theory. The results has shown that society's perception regarding rape victims and rape are influenced by well known rape myths. Both confirmative as contradictory comments connected to rape myths are to be found in the articles. The results has no given patterns, which shows the complexity and obscurity in the subject of sexual violence. In addition, the results have displayed that rape victims are constructed in different ways in the articles. Our conclusion is that it seems to be a positive progress in development about how victims of sexual assaults and/or rape are portrayed in news media.

Ekberg, Elise, Alfredsson, Stina January 2020 (has links)
This study’s purpose is, through content analysis, to interpret the portrayal of the human-rights movement Black Lives Matter during the spring and summer of 2020. Further intentions include examining and explaining the portrayals of the Swedish and the American movements. Theories of Framing and Moral-Panic are used for understanding expressions and consequences of portraiture. Using a hermeneutic approach, 53 articles from four of Sweden's leading newspapers were interpreted. Main findings were that Swedish news media tend to portray the movement in Sweden in more opinion-based terms compared to the movement in the USA. The opinions were mainly expressed when reporting on the movement during demonstrations in Sweden while reports of the USA, mainly portrayed the movement in police- violence but balanced terms. Previous research contributed to an increased understanding of the research field and to problematizing the study's results in relation to its theoretical framework. Our conclusion is that Swedish news media tend to portray Black Lives Matter in more polarized terms if current affairs are taking place in a geographical vicinity. The movement in relation to violence is also portrayed differently depending on the country- specific history of the movement. Although patterns could be discerned, the relationship is complex based on the scope of the essay and empirical material.

The Effect of Colorblind Racial Ideology on Discussion of Racial Events: An Examination of Responses to the News Coverage of the Trayvon Martin Shooting

Lawrence, Stephanie 07 November 2014 (has links)
This study explores how participants respond to news coverage of the Trayvon Martin shooting based on their colorblind racial attitudes. The purpose of this study is to understand how people’s beliefs about the salience of race and racism, as well as how framing within news coverage, contributes to how people privately respond to racial events and their willingness to publicly express their views in discussions. Participants answered questions about their racial ideology, their views about the role of race in the Trayvon Martin shooting, and whether or not they were willing to express these views in a discussion after reading articles that either promotes an overtly colorblind view of the Trayvon Martin case, a race conscious view of the case, or only states the facts of the case (for the control condition). It was found that there were racial differences in how participants viewed the role of race in the Trayvon Martin shooting, even when controlling for racial ideology, and that beliefs in colorblind ideology impacted views of the Trayvon Martin case and willingness to discuss it, with participants with race conscious views that were shown an article that presented the case from a colorblind perspective reporting being less willing to discuss their views on the case compared to those shown an article that presented the case from a race conscious perspective.

#NewsOnTikTok : A content analysis of the use of text elements by legacy news media on TikTok

Salb, Sorrel Franziska January 2021 (has links)
With many legacy news media brands struggling to maintain relevance and financial support, they are looking to social networks to connect with new audiences. The video sharing platform TikTok has experienced rapid growth in recent years and has a strong user base of Gen Z users which are a demographic which legacy news media are increasingly attempting to engage with. A number of legacy news media brands have established a presence on TikTok and begun experimenting with different formats. While there have been a few more general analyses of informational content on TikTok, no research to date has focused specifically on how different text elements are used for conveying news. This thesis addresses this gap through investigating how legacy news media (newspapers and TV) are using text, closed captions, and captions on TikTok. Moreover, styles of communication and TikTok editorial tools used by legacy news media are examined in detail. These elements are explored using a quantitative content analysis which analyses 200 videos from eight popular legacy news media brands from the USA, Britain, and Australia. Social media logic and functions specific to TikTok are used as a framework to analyze the problem, with the results showing that most of the legacy news media accounts have somewhat adopted social media logic in their use of text elements on TikTok.
