An investigation of students' knowledge, skills and strategies during problem solving in objectoriented programming

Havenga, Hester Maria 30 June 2008 (has links)
The object-oriented paradigm is widely advocated and has been used in South African universities since the late 1990s. Object-oriented computer programming is based on the object-oriented paradigm where objects are the building blocks that combine data and methods in the same entity. Students' performance in object-oriented programming (OOP) is a matter of concern. In many cases they lack the ability to apply various supportive techniques in the process of programming. Efficient knowledge, skills and strategies are required during problem solving to enhance the programming process. It is often assumed that students implicitly and independently master these high-level knowledge, skills and strategies, and that teaching should focus on programming content and coding structures only. However, to be successful in the complex domain of OOP, explicit learning of both programming and supportive cognitive techniques is required. The objective of this study was to identify cognitive, metacognitive and problem-solving knowledge, skills and strategies used by successful and unsuccessful programmers in OOP. These activities were identified and evaluated in an empirical research study. A mixed research design was used, where both qualitative and quantitative methods were applied to analyse participants' data. As a qualitative research practice, grounded theory was applied to guide the systematic collection of data and to generate theory. The findings suggest that successful programmers applied significantly more cognitive-, metacognitive- and problem-solving knowledge, skills and strategies, also using a greater variety, than the unsuccessful programmers. Since programming is complex, we propose a learning repertoire based on the approaches of successful programmers, to serve as an integrated framework to support novices in learning OOP. Various techniques should be used during problem solving and programming to meaningfully construct, explicitly reflect on, and critically select appropriate knowledge, skills and strategies so as to better understand, design, code and test programs. Some examples of teaching practices are also outlined as application of the findings of the study. / Mathematical Sciences / PhD. (Nathematics, Science and Tecnical Education)

Spatial and temporal assessment of groundwater-surface water interaction, Schoonspruit river catchment, North West, South Africa

Nzama, Stanley Mvuselelo 01 March 2017 (has links)
The study presents the spatio-temporal assessment of groundwater-surface water (GW-SW) interaction aspects in the Schoonspruit River catchment, North West of South Africa. The research study aimed at improving understanding of groundwater and surface water interaction through assessing its location and time when such interaction occurs. GW-SW interaction sites were identified using principal aquifer type characterization methods. The occurrence of the interaction was established using hydrochemistry methods and the effectiveness of the existing monitoring methods were evaluated in their consideration of GW-SW interaction within the study area. The main results from the study showed that there was GW-SW interaction in the Schoonspruit River catchment which was not affected by seasonal changes. The result further showed that existing monitoring methods in the study catchment were not effective in addressing GW-SW interaction. The study concluded that qualitative methods are essential in studying GW-SW interaction and that monitoring methods for such interactions are required / Centre for Sustainable Agriculture and Environmental Sciences / M. Choreography modeling in embedded systems domain

Taušan, N. (Nebojša) 29 November 2016 (has links)
Abstract Choreography modelling, as a service-oriented architecture specific technique, is increasingly present in embedded systems development domain. This technique specifies a flow of interactions between participants' services from the global or neutral point of view while the specified models represent an integral part of the overall software architecture. Choreography modelling languages that are currently used in embedded systems domain, however, are not expressive enough to capture the choreography-relevant information in this domain. For this reason, choreography specifications are often lacking information or include ambiguous information. This allows misinterpretation of the specified choreography models and leads to difficulties in communication among stakeholders that use those models. The objective of this research is to advance the design of choreography modelling languages by identifying the information content that is relevant in embedded systems domain and by designing a choreography modelling language that supports that information content. To achieve this objective, this research adopted the design science research framework and five individual studies were conducted within this framework. These studies used methods such as the interviews with practitioners, company specific documents and open standards to understand the challenges in industry, systematic literature review to collect the existing scientific knowledge about the utilization of choreography in embedded systems and the focus groups to evaluate the designed language. Based on these study results, the information content that is relevant for choreography modelling in embedded systems domain was identified and then supported with the design of choreography modelling language. The design of the choreography modelling language is evaluated in academic and industry context. The evaluation in academic context is realized by language implementation while the evaluation in industry is realized with industry experts. Language evaluation showed increased expressiveness of the designed language and indicated on possible benefits from its use in testing and protocol development area. These benefits include the reduction of development time and errors in the testing phase while the reduction of maintenance burden and performance improvement can be expected in the protocol development area. / Tiivistelmä Koreografinen mallintaminen on enenevässä määrin käytetty tekniikka sulautettujen järjestelmien palvelukeskeisten arkkitehtuurien määrittelyssä. Tavoitteen saavuttamiseksi sovellettiin "design science" (suunnittelun tutkimus) tutkimusmenetelmää, jolla toteutettiin viisi tapaustutkimusta. Näissä tutkimuksissa hyödynnettiin teollisuuden asiantuntijoiden haastatteluita, yrityskohtaisia dokumentteja ja avoimia standardeja, joiden avulla pystyttiin ymmärtämään teollisuuden kohtaamia haasteita tutkimusalueella. Systemaattisen kirjallisuuskatsauksen avulla kerättiin yhteen olemassa oleva tieteellinen tietämys koreografian käytöstä sulautetuissa järjestelmissä. Kehitetyn kielen sopivuutta teolliseen tuotekehitykseen arvioitiin asiantuntiaryhmille järjestetyissä työpajoissa. Saatujen tutkimustulosten valossa koreografiamallinnuksessa tarvittavat oleelliset tietosisällöt sulautettujen järjestelmien alueella pystyttiin määrittämään sekä kehittämään tietosisältöä tukeva koreografian mallinnuskieli. Kehitetty mallinnuskieli on arvioitu akateemisessa kontekstissa toteuttamalla koreografian mallinnuskieli.

The caregivers disquiet in addictology : between distrust and love, an ethical and clinical dynamic of the care relationship

Reyre, Aymeric 09 March 2015 (has links)
The encounter with addicted patients frequently arouses a feeling of disquiet. It renders the practice of care difficult, even in expert settings, and degrades its ethical conditions. The present work explores the experience of professionals from the field of addictions treatment taking account of the diversity of their approaches and practices. It is in line with an epistemology of the complexity and adopts a complémentariste methodology. In this way, sociological, philosophical and psychoanalytical theoretical corpus can be put in discussion in order to comprehend the complexity of the ethical and clinical questions emerging from the care relationship. In a first phase, we conducted a qualitative inquiry of the caregiver’s experience. The study “Éthique et Narrativité dans les Addictions” (EthNaA) provided us with numerous data on sources and effects of disquiet in the care setting, as well as on ways out. A psychodynamical reading of these results led us to a first theory of the care relationship: in the encounter, the caregiver and the patient both withdraw on narcissistic positions which determine how they depict one another and themselves, as well as their ways of establishing mutual bounds; alternatively monsters and heroes, the protagonists grab onto each other and reject each other in a climate of distrust which infiltrates all the areas of the relationship; through the pain of this experience and the consciousness of the ethical consequences for the patient, the caregivers seek resources allowing them to restore a trust by taking care of themselves and looking for support from the “outside”, but they still seem unable to commit themselves in this move.In a second phase, as a professional enrolled in the care of addicted patients, it was necessary that we exhibit our own experience and clinical stories in order to support an ethical stand. Our experience is very similar to the caregiver’s in the study but its report allowed us to underline the intrapsychic integration of the emotional dynamics previously described. It opened the way of a second theory able to support innovative propositions likely to restore the care in its ethical and clinical qualities. The “disquiet relationship” brings a suffering patient in a silent expectation face to face with a caregiver, willing to get involved but vulnerable, in the first place because of the weakening of the function of the third position in the caregiver’s thought as well as in the institutional frame. The care relationship then locks itself in a circularity witch evokes the circle of attitudes described by Jean-Paul Sartre among masochism, hatred, sadism and love. This love, present in the caregiver’s discourses, remains withdrawn into itself and distrustful. We then started again from the caregiver’s ideas, completing them by introducing a care of the self able to restore the subjectivity of the agent through its combination with the reinvestment of the function of the third position in the caregiver’s thought. This new caring stand, through the assertion of the primacy of the third position, shall allow the acknowledgement of the patient as a subject. This “play” between protagonists shall place itself in an ethic simultaneously demanding and tolerant. The “amorous” track opened by the caregivers of the study can then rejoin the ethic of Vladimir Jankélévitch. The care relationship between two restored subjects can then make a fresh start – supported by a new dialectic between care of the self and love of the other, between piercing disquiet and anxious yearning, between distrust and trust – on a sinuous and sometimes chaotic trajectory, but which finally gives to the care the last word.

Zur Wahrnehmung strategischer CSR-Aktivitäten und deren Kommunikation: Eine qualitative Untersuchung am Beispiel der Energiebranche

Belentschikow, Valentin 30 June 2015 (has links)
The presented analysis deals with the perception of strategic CSR-activities and CSR-communication campaigns. Using a qualitative approach and exploring the field of the energy sector in Germany, data was gathered from expert interviews (communication officers & CSR-experts), content and frame analysis (media resonance, blogosphere, online chats, website analysis) and guided interviews. Conclusively, three concepts were identified: CSR as a voluntary act (perceived self-commitment based on corporate ethics), CSR as an obligation (engagement based on public pressure) and CSR as an instrument (sense-making engagement, instrumentalization for reputational goals). The compiled model illustrates linkages and relationships between these concepts and offers an explanatory approach for the fundamental skepticism towards strategic CSR-activities and related communication campaigns.

Fournier, Mariane 08 1900 (has links)
Contexte. Conclusion. / Background. The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted comparisons with other epidemics, like that of HIV/AIDS. However, these historical parallels have their limits, particularly in Québec, where the history of the early years of the AIDS response has barely been studied, including within its most affected population: homosexuals. The research project documents this history from the point of view of its main actors, by questioning the potential “delay” of the mobilization and the impact of sexual identity on the temporalities of this response. Methods. This qualitative study is based on a social history approach. For this reason, the data stems both from documentary and archival sources, as well as oral sources. Indeed, in addition to a literature review, the “AIDS” collection of the Archives gaies du Québec was examined, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with fifteen individuals from the political, community, scientific and media sectors who played an active role in this mobilization. Results. The project established how the response to this epidemic was developed in the province. Firstly, it appears the mobilization of health professionals preceded that of the affected communities. In addition, the first community-based AIDS groups were created in 1983 within homosexual organizations, but they separated from the homosexual movement in 1985. From 1987 onwards, a fragmentation of organizations occurred due to linguistic, identity and directional tensions. As for the Québec political milieu, it remained in the background in the early years of the epidemic, and it took seven years before it implemented a structured policy to fight AIDS in the province. The study also highlighted specificities of the Québec response to the epidemic. Conclusion. The analysis of the response to the AIDS epidemic in Québec sheds a new light on the notion of delay in the mobilization against HIV/AIDS that was observed in almost all industrialized countries.

Concepts of Divine Action for a Theistic Approach to Psychology

Melling, Brent S. 27 June 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Recent years have seen increased interest in using theism (the perspective that assumes that God is currently actively in the world) as a conceptual framework for scientific inquiry. This interest has built particular momentum in psychology where several scholars have expressed that traditional naturalistic approaches limit understanding and investigation of psychology's subject matter and thus are insufficient to fully account for human phenomena. Others have previously made the case for the consideration of theism as a legitimate alternative basis for psychological theory, research, and practice. This dissertation begins with that consideration and examines what would be required to move a theistic approach to psychology forward. In other words, if God is assumed to be active in the world (including the psychological world-theism), what difference would that make for the ideas, methods, and practices of psychology? As the current activity of God is the foundational assumption of theism, clarity about what that activity would entail is especially essential for those seeking to develop a theistic approach to psychology and to describe how their discipline would be different from that perspective. Unfortunately, there is currently a lack of clear and explicitly articulated conceptions of God's actions in and for psychology. This dissertation provides a conceptual analysis of the activity of God that synthesizes disparate approaches to divine action into a tentative conceptualization or taxonomic schema. This schema organizes the scholarly literature from across several major traditions into six major heads and elucidates multiple subordinate concepts. The conceptualization serves as an orientation to important issues such as strong v weak theisms, the limitations of naturalism, and practical theistic applications for psychology. Detailed illustrations of these concepts as applied to psychological theory, research (both in the qualitative and quantitative modes), and practice further demonstrate the utility of such a conceptualization. These examples provide a specific focus on the unique contributions of a theistic perspective over and against those of naturalism.
