The High School Redesign Initiative: teachers' perspectives

Terry, Rebekah Fair 07 August 2010 (has links)
Redesigning High Schools for the 21st century became a goal of the Mississippi Department of Education in 2006. The focus of redesign is to ensure that students gain the knowledge necessary to compete in the technological world they will enter after high school graduation. Students who choose not to go to college are to leave high school with the skills that have prepared them for employment. The redesign process incorporates classes of technology in grades 7–9. Grade 7 students will be involved in Information and Communication Technology I. Information and Communication Technology II will include eighth-grade students. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses will be added to the ninth-grade curriculum. During the second year of implementation, Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes will be converted to Career Pathway classes for students in the 10th grade. Using a competitive grant application process, 13 school districts were chosen to participate in Phase I of Redesign. In the second year of implementation, 19 school districts were chosen to begin Phase II of the redesign initiative. This study focuses on the Alcoville School District (a pseudonym), which was chosen as a Phase II school. The purpose of this study was to understand the issues of redesign that were faced by the teachers involved in the implementation process. Emphasis was placed on the knowledge the teachers had of the redesign implementation in this district and the problems they faced as implementation occurred. The results of this study suggested that teachers (a) wanted to be more involved in the planning of redesign, (b) thought there was a lack of training, (c) were concerned with the lack of knowledge of their trainers, (d) were concerned with the difficulty of the curriculum, (e) stated there was no follow-up training offered from the Research and Curriculum Unit (RCU) at Mississippi State University, (f) reported that the RCU was not able to answer their questions, (g) stated there was not a network of Phase I teachers with whom to talk, and (h) reported that the administration did not understand their curriculum or show concern with what they were teaching.

Växjö Lakers : Conversation About Co-branding & Brand Identity Redesign / Växjö Lakers Rebranding : Redesign of brand identity

Houssein, Samer January 2016 (has links)
This project is a simulation of the redesign of Växjö Lakers ice hockey club brand identity. A conversation about Co-branding and participatory design to include fans and people in general to take part in designing the brand identity of the club they support. My role as designer is to test, examine and analyse to come up with design methods and tools (Create your own logo website) that will enable fans and everyone to design their own version of the Växjö Lakers identity. In order to connect and create a bridge between club and fans that are willing to take part in such project, this will result of creating designs that would be more relevant to the image of the club that fans imagined.

Informationsdesign för ett säkrare användargränssnitt : Redesign av ett virtuellt tangentbord

Parsi, Arian January 2010 (has links)

Designing the management systems for offices

Alfadhl, Seiam S. January 2011 (has links)
An initial review of literature concerned with commercial and industrial office design indicated the need to research and develop a method for the design of the management systems of offices with the purpose of improving the operational effectiveness and alignment to strategy. In particular the literature review indicated that the application of lean methods, in non-manufacturing areas is comparatively rare. A critical review of the literature identified that Value Stream Mapping has been used to map mechanistic task activities, however, a need was identified for a new generation of Value Stream Mapping to map mixed mechanistic and organic task activities. To complement the literature survey and discover if there were significant variables (e.g. task uncertainty, interdependence, task complexity, mechanistic / organic structures, risk, task analysability etc) influencing office design, pilot studies were carried out in a mechanistic and organic office. Several additional variables were identified. From the pilot studies combined with the literature review a conceptual model was formulated which provides guidelines for managers enabling them to design the management systems fully taking all the variables into account. The conceptual model was then tested using a multiple case study design of two small consulting type offices that exhibited mixed mechanistic and organic characteristics. This resulted in an improved version of the model which was then further validated. This validation based upon the opinions of office managers focused mainly on identifying the practical usefulness of the model from an industrial perspective. Following the validation a final form of the model has been proposed in this research. It remains for future researchers to fully test the model by applying it in a wider range of offices. This study makes an explicit contribution to the redesign of offices as well as the utilisation of Value Stream Mapping to the mechanistic and the organic task activities within commercial and industrial offices.

Design kompenzační pomůcky horní končetiny / Design of Upper Limb Assistive Device

Minaříková, Olga January 2012 (has links)
This work deals with a new approach of designing ortho-prosthetic devices in terms of mechanical solution and innovative design. The work was addressed to a specific patient with congenital malformation of upper limbs called phocomelia. A custom-made compensatory aid was made on basis of personal consultations and meetings on specialized workplace; however the aid was built in a way and from parts for other kind of disability. As it turned out, the use of this equipment is associated with many complications, and therefore as a result, this solution proved as unsatisfactory. Nevertheless, thanks to this compensation aid it was possible to specify the problems, to reveal important patterns and highlight the needs for development of entirely new and unique aid designed for patients with phocomelia disability. The work is based on these findings and knowledge acquired from bibliographic search in the field of orthotics, prosthetics, assistive devices and prosthetic equipment. A complete redesign was done with the aim to eliminate all detected problems. The presented result is a unique tool for people with specific congenital disability of upper limbs, with working label 4TE.

The historical centers, favorable zones for such policies for their cultural potential to generate new economical opportunities, end up being a point of convergence between dimensions of local life and distant interests. But on account of the peculiarity how each experience is built, according to the different levels of participation of the social groups involved, the historical inheritance of each town, the political usages proper to each administration, in sum, having the local culture as mediator, it is possible to notice that urban redesign plans may not respond exclusively to market interests, but they can also attend society local necessities, gathering distant and proximate orders. Therefore, it is assumed that there are no predefined models of urban redesign plans, unless as the result of social activity at a certain time and in a certain space, which makes important to know each of the cases in which this kind of policy is introduced. Here the analysis is centered on two recent redesign programs of the historical center of the Italian city of Genoa, the Program URBAN II, an initiative of the European Community, and the Contratto di Quartiere del Ghetto, promoted by the Italian Ministry for Infrastructure and by the Region of Liguria. Based on an approach of qualitative countenance and driving attention to the local context and to the typology of the interventions that distinguish the programs, this thesis tries to identify the relevance of social activity of the various participants on the process and of local inheritance, reflecting upon the implication that this kind of policy has on the city, its impact on urban space and the new uses it induces in the areas where it occurs / As políticas de requalificação dos espaços urbanos têm sido vistas como instrumentos de adequação das cidades às demandas do capital por novos espaços para sua reprodução e, muitas vezes, tais transformações se sobrepõem às aspirações do próprio lugar. The changing nature of work, leadership, and organizational culture in future ready organizations

Dhir, Saloni 01 January 2019 (has links)
Abstract The relationship between individual and organizational performance is a key challenge for leaders in modern organizations, especially with the current disruption in technology and innovation. This thesis is a literature review and compilation of the relevant empirical evidence on various processes of industrial groups and organizational characteristics such as the changing nature of work, leadership, and company culture in detail. I investigate the complex challenges that millennials and organizations are facing in the current VUCA work environment as well as their potential responses to these changes. I map out the evolution of the concept of work and compare changes in the workplace environment of the past, present, and future. Additionally, this thesis reviews the literature on organizational culture models, cultural fit and clash. I explore the intertwined differences and commonalities between management and leadership and also consider a gradual shift to a model of managerial-leadership in 21st century organizations. Furthermore, the research closely examines cultural change management through the lens of mergers and acquisitions. It also discusses next steps, like job redesign, team reorganization, and cultural reconciliation, to increase job satisfaction, employee motivation, and performance in future-ready organizations.

Redesign of Alpha Class Glutathione Transferases to Study Their Catalytic Properties

Nilsson, Lisa O January 2001 (has links)
<p>A number of active site mutants of human Alpha class glutathione transferase A1-1 (hGST A1-1) were made and characterized to determine the structural determinants for alkenal activity. The choice of mutations was based on primary structure alignments of hGST A1-1 and the Alpha class enzyme with the highest alkenal activity, hGST A4-4, from three different species and crystal structure comparisons between the human enzymes. The result was an enzyme with a 3000-fold change in substrate specificity for nonenal over 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (CDNB).</p><p>The C-terminus of the Alpha class enzymes is an α-helix that folds over the active site upon substrate binding. The rate-determining step is product release, which is influenced by the movements of the C-terminus, thereby opening the active site. Phenylalanine 220, near the end of the C-terminus, forms an aromatic cluster with tyrosine 9 and phenylalanine 10, positioning the β-carbon of the cysteinyl moiety of glutathione. The effects of phenylalanine 220 mutations on the mobility of the C-terminus were studied by the viscosity dependence of kcat and kcat/Km with glutathione and CDNB as the varied substrates. </p><p>The compatibility of slightly different subunit interfaces within the Alpha class has been studied by heterodimerization between monomers from hGST A1-1 and hGST A4-4. The heterodimer was temperature sensitive, and rehybridized into homodimers at 40 ˚C. The heterodimers did not show strictly additive activities with alkenals and CDNB. This result combined with further studies indicates that there are factors at the subunit interface influencing the catalytic properties of hGST A1-1.</p>
