Ahmed, Noor January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this study was to get insight into how the pupils in years 7 and 8 understand equivalent fractions, reducing and raising, and into how they interpret the connections between raising and multiplication and between reducing and division. The aim was also to investigate pupils' knowledge of fractional aspects with a focus on fraction as a number that has its own value on the number line. The study was based on theoretical models of how fractions can be understood, theories of learning and previous research into similar issues. The approach chosen was multi-method research, which includes quantitative methods in the collection and analysis of questionnaires and qualitative methods in the collection and analysis of interviews with pupils. Both the pupils' solutions and answers to the questions in the questionnaire and the interviews they provided gave very useful qualitative information to analyse. The analysis answered my questions, and I obtained an insight into how the pupils in years 7 and 8 understand equivalent fractions, reducing and raising as concepts and calculation methods. Through the pupils' solutions and answers, I gleaned an insight into the way in which the pupils think and see mathematics, specifically in fractions. The study indicated that pupils have sufficient knowledge of fractions as a part of a whole, while shortfalls in knowledge were identified in some pupils not mastering the concept of fractions or what numerators and denominators represent. The study also showed that some pupils have insufficient knowledge of equivalent fractions and the fact that fractions can be written in an infinite number of ways without this changing the value. In addition, they had difficulty with raising and reducing. Understanding all these concepts is necessary for pupils to operate effectively with fractions. The areas where they lacked knowledge led them to use incorrect strategies when dealing with fractions in the data. Incorrect strategies were identified pupils using their old knowledge of natural numbers and trying to adapt the answers to the new situation.

Reducerande ventiler i fjärrvärmenätet : Reducerande ventilers påverkan på framtidens fjärrvärmenät

Öhman, Felix January 2023 (has links)
District heating makes up about half of all heating that takes place in Sweden today and, in addition to that, has an important role as it makes use of a lot of energy that would otherwise have been wasted. Being able to be economically competitive against other heating alternatives is an important part of the continued development of district heating. There are several options to do this, one of which is to keep operating costs down. This can be done by reducing the pressure drops in the networks, which can also provide an increased possibility of expansion. Today, shut-off valves with reducing throughput are mainly used in networks, often because of the cheaper investment. Despite this, there is a lack of knowledge about how these valves affect the networks, which is attributed to pressure drop, operating and investment costs compared to valves with full flow. To investigate this, two methods have been used to complement each other and increase the understanding of the valves. In the first method, the general case is calculated theoretically to see at which flows valves with full flow are advantageous. The second method calculates a specific case with simulations in a real network with the different valves and calculates which one is the most economically advantageous. The results of the general case show that valves with full flow become more advantageous when the flow rate exceeds about 1 m/s, regardless of dimension, calculated over 30 years with an electricity price of SEK 1.50 /kWh. When dimensioning networks, 1.5 - 2.0 m/s is a common value, this often constitutes a small part of the network's operating time and is often lower. Calculation of the specific case showed that valves with reducing throughput are the economic alternative as the payback period for valves with full throughput was over 600 years at SEK 1.50/kWh. Based on this, the conclusion can be drawn that valves with full throughput should not replace reducing throughput, but that it is instead a question of identifying the parts of the network that constitute a throttling or constriction in the network where high flow rates can occur and possibly switch to valves with full throughput.

Sulfhydryl Reducing Agents Distinguish Two Subtypes of Angiotensin II Receptors in the Rat Brain

Speth, Robert C., Rowe, Brian P., Grove, Kevin L., Carter, Michelle R., Saylor, David 10 May 1991 (has links)
Two angiotensin II receptor subtypes were distinguished in the rat brain using in vitro receptor autoradiography based on the differential effects of sulfhydryl reducing agents on 125I-sarcosine1, isoleucine8 angiotensin II binding in various brain nuclei. At several nuclei, e.g. the hypothalamus, circumventricular organs and the dorsal medulla, 125I-sarcosine1, isoleucine8 angiotensin II binding was strongly inhibited by 30 mM β-mercaptoethanol or 5 mM dithiothreitol, whereas at other nuclei, e.g. the lateral septum, colliculi, locus coeruleus and medial amygdala, sulfhydryl reducing agents had either little effect on radioligand binding or enhanced the binding. The distribution of the sulfhydryl reducing agent inactivated subtype corresponds exactly with the distribution of DuP 753 sensitive (designated as AIIα) 125I-sarcosine1, isoleucine8 angiotensin II binding sites25. The subtype not inhibited by sulfhydryl reducing agents corresponds with the DuP 753 insensitive (designated as AIIβ) sites in the brain25. The sulfhydryl reducing agent effect on brain angiotensin II receptor subtypes is similar to that seen in angiotensin II receptor subtypes in peripheral tissues. These observations indicate that many previous studies of brain angiotensin II receptor binding that included 5 mM dithiothreitol in the assay medium overlooked the sulfhydryl reducing agent inactivated (AIIα) receptor subtype.

Reducing Curvature in Complex Tool Paths by Deviating from CAM-Produced Tool Paths Within a Tolerance Band

Naseath, George Benjamin 12 December 2007 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis develops an algorithm to decrease high-curvature sections in tool paths for complex parts to achieve shorter machining times resulting in higher production rates. In the research sample cases, the algorithm decreased machining times by 1% to 9% for design-induced sections of high curvature and by 16% to 75% for CAM induced ripples using high path tolerances. High-curvature sections in tool paths are caused by complex part geometry, noise, and discontinuities in the model. The curvature is decreased by deviating the tool path within an allowable path tolerance. The feedrate along the tool path is directly related to the curvature of the tool path. High-curvature sections cause the NC machine to reduce the feedrate along the tool path due to acceleration and jerk limits. These lower feedrates increase machining time and slow production rates. This new algorithm decreases curvature, which increases feedrates and decreases machining times, thereby increasing production rates for manufacturing companies. The tool paths are represented by cubic B-splines. The algorithm is based on the basic principle that the curvature of a B-spline directly relates to the geometry of its control polygon. If the control polygon's geometry has many tight corners then the B-spline will have high curvature. If the control polygon's geometry is a straight line then the B-spline will be a straight line with zero curvature. The algorithm deviates the control polygon's points so that they move towards forming a straight line. The control polygon will rarely form a straight line because the spline is limited by the path tolerance. However, as the control polygon moves towards forming a straight line, the curvature decreases, which allows the feedrate to increase. Six sample cases are explored in which the machining time is decreased. Three of the cases are tool paths that contain curvature sections with a range of unnecessary curvature from low to high. One sample is the tool path for the complex geometry in a snow tire mold. Another sample tool path contains ripples caused by noise in the CAD model. The last tool path contains ripples caused by tangency discontinuities in the CAD model. The percent of time saved directly relates to the severity of the curvature in the part. This thesis provides a quick and efficient means to reduce curvature in complex parts, resulting in decreased machining times and increased production rates.

Determining the efficiency of selected vegetated biofilters in reducing nutrients from urban stormwater in the city of Ekurhuleni, South Africa

Bvumbi, Mulalo Justice 11 1900 (has links)
M. Tech. (Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Technology), Vaal University of Technology. / Over time, the quality standard of stormwater in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has deteriorated due to industrial, commercial, residential and farming activities. Stormwater quality directly impacts the treatment chain of potable water, and therefore, it should be kept in check at all stages. Innovations in the biofiltration process can provide useful, practical solutions to overcome crucial stormwater pollution problems. In 2013, the CoE developed stormwater design guidelines and standards to be implemented for the design of stormwater management, which include the principles of Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) and Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) in particular. The CoE stormwater design guidelines and standards do not provide details on how the city plans to implement SuDS treatment trains to reduce stormwater pollution experienced by the city. This study aimed to verify the efficiency and effectiveness of vegetated biofilters on the stormwater treatment using CoE – Olifantsfontain's natural stormwater and to determine the most suitable vegetation to be used in the region. The CoE experimental case study was conducted to assess the efficiency of selected vegetated biofilters in lowering the concentration of orthophosphate (PO4-3), ammonium (NH4+), and nitrate (NO3-) from Tembisa/Olifantsfontain stormwater. In the experimental setup, six selected plant species were planted into 30 vegetated biofilter columns, namely: Agapanthus praecox (Dryland plant), Carpobrotus edulis (Dryland plant), Stenotaphrum secundatum (Dryland plant), Zantedeschia aethiopica (Wetland plant), Typha capensis (Wetland plant) and Phragmites australis (Wetland plant). The six species were grouped according to general habitats, i.e. three wetland and three dryland plants. Wetland plants were planted into fifteen vegetated biofilters, and dryland plants were also planted on another fifteen vegetated biofilters. The biofilters contained layers of sandy loam soil, coarse and and gravel sand. Each biofilter had a designated inlet and outlet section fitted with a gate valve to control retention time. The raw stormwater consisting of natural nutrient pollutants was applied to each vegetated biofilter through the inlet section. The samples were collected from the inlet and outlet of the six grouped vegetated biofilters during the month of June. All six plant species reduced outflow concentrations of PO4-3 and NH4+ by an average of 99% and 98%, respectively. The results also show that all plant species excluding Phragmites australis were able to reduce NO3- with outflow concentrations being reduced by an average of 58%. From the results obtained, it may be concluded that all the six plant species may be suitable variants to be applied as biofilter material for the purposes of treating urban stormwater in the CoE. The reason is that the determined removal efficiencies for bio-retention fall within 50% – 60% for PO4-3, and 40% - 50% for NH4+ and NO3- respectively. The results also show that if the plant species were applied for SuDs in the CoE, there could be a great improvement in the urban stormwater quality with the consequent improvement in both surface and groundwater quality of the receiving water bodies in the area. Regardless of the nutrient removal by selected plant species, the inclusion of vegetation in a field setting would slow flow rates and thus encourage infiltration into the soil, improve water quality, and support urban biodiversity. In the CoE, all the selected species could be used in the SuDS treatment trains targeting PO4-3, NH4+ and/or NO3-. The case study results provide a informed records for the CoE in the future/intended application SuDs in the upgrade/rehabilitation of its stormwater system.

Insights into Autotrophic Activities and Carbon Flow in Iron-Rich Pelagic Aggregates (Iron Snow)

Li, Qianqian, Cooper, Rebecca E., Wegner, Carl-Eric, Taubert, Martin, Jehmlich, Nico, von Bergen, Martin, Küsel, Kirsten 05 May 2023 (has links)
Pelagic aggregates function as biological carbon pumps for transporting fixed organic carbon to sediments. In iron-rich (ferruginous) lakes, photoferrotrophic and chemolithoautotrophic bacteria contribute to CO2 fixation by oxidizing reduced iron, leading to the formation of iron-rich pelagic aggregates (iron snow). The significance of iron oxidizers in carbon fixation, their general role in iron snow functioning and the flow of carbon within iron snow is still unclear. Here, we combined a two-year metatranscriptome analysis of iron snow collected from an acidic lake with protein-based stable isotope probing to determine general metabolic activities and to trace 13CO2 incorporation in iron snow over time under oxic and anoxic conditions. mRNA-derived metatranscriptome of iron snow identified four key players (Leptospirillum, Ferrovum, Acidithrix, Acidiphilium) with relative abundances (59.6–85.7%) encoding ecologically relevant pathways, including carbon fixation and polysaccharide biosynthesis. No transcriptional activity for carbon fixation from archaea or eukaryotes was detected. 13CO2 incorporation studies identified active chemolithoautotroph Ferrovum under both conditions. Only 1.0–5.3% relative 13C abundances were found in heterotrophic Acidiphilium and Acidocella under oxic conditions. These data show that iron oxidizers play an important role in CO2 fixation, but the majority of fixed C will be directly transported to the sediment without feeding heterotrophs in the water column in acidic ferruginous lakes.

[pt] SIMULAÇÃO TERMODINÂMICA E MODELAGEM CINÉTICA DA DECOMPOSIÇÃO TÉRMICA DO MGSO4.7H2O / [en] THERMODYNAMICS SIMULATIONS AND KINETICS MODELING OF MGSO4.7H2O THERMAL DECOMPOSITION

BRUNO MUNIZ E SOUZA 18 September 2023 (has links)
[en] Magnesium sulfate is present in several industrial and mining wastes. It and its derivatives could be reused in various industrial areas, ceasing to be a waste to become part of a process. Its oxide, MgO, can be used in some functions, as a pH regulator, depending on its reactivity. Due to this, its formation must occur at temperatures below the decomposition temperatures of MgSO4. Therefore, this work evaluated aspects of the decomposition of MgSO4 through two articles. Article 1 (Thermodynamics Simulations and Kinetics Modeling of the Thermal Decomposition of MgSO4.7H2O: Part 1 – Reducing Agent Effect), evaluated the kinetic effect of using carbon, through four different reducing agents, on the thermal decomposition of MgSO4.7H2O, while article 2 (Thermodynamics Simulations and Kinetics Modeling of the Thermal Decomposition of MgSO4.7H2O: Part 2 – Hydration Effect) analyzed the influences of the heating rate of the tests and the degree of hydration of the magnesium sulfate used. The thermogravimetric tests carried out throughout these articles used samples with a mass of approximately 10 mg of the mixture (sulfate + reducing agent) and these mixtures had a stoichiometric ratio of 1:1. The experiments carried out in article 1 used reducing agents, charcoal, green coke, breeze coke, and graphite as reducing agents. In article 2, the sulfates analyzed were anhydrous, monohydrate, and heptahydrate and the heating rates used were 5 K.min(-1) , 10 K.min(-1) , 15 K.min(-1) , and 20 K.min(-1). All data obtained from thermogravimetric tests were processed through mathematical modeling to obtain kinetic data. In article 1, the use of reducing agents proved efficient, reducing the activation energy of magnesium sulfate decomposition from 22.731 kJ.mol(-1) (pure sulfate) to 340.391 kJ.mol(-1) (green coke), 196.120 kJ.mol(-1) (graphite), 191,100 kJ.mol(-1) (coke breeze) and 162,302 kJ.mol(-1) (charcoal). In article 2, the heating rate was not shown to be a determining factor for the decomposition of MgSO4, in relation to the hydration of magnesium sulfate, the results indicated that a small portion of H2O in the system can positively influence the decomposition since the average Ea values were 404.5 KJ.mol(-1) (mono), 407 KJ.mol(-1) (anhydrous) and 433.3 KJ.mol(-1) (hepta).

A Biopsychosocial Model of Dietary Restraint in Early Adolescent Boys

Mitchell, Sara H. 08 1900 (has links)
The current study replicated and extended previous research by examining empirically the direct and indirect influence of social pressure (to lose weight and diet), social body comparisons, internalization of the thin ideal, body dissatisfaction, self-esteem, and cardiorespiratory fitness on self-reported dietary restraint in a diverse sample of middle school boys (n = 663); Mage was 12.49 years (SD = .99). With IRB approval, parental consent, and child assent, during annual FITNESSGRAM testing, participants completed questionnaires that measured the study’s constructs. Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) was determined by the boys’ performance on the PACER running test. The proposed model was examined using structural equation modeling (SEM). Because measures demonstrated univariate and multivariate normality, the maximum likelihood procedure within EQS to examine the measurement and structural models was used. Fit was determined using a two-index procedure. Participants were randomly split into exploratory (Sample A - 331) and confirmatory (Sample B - 332) samples. For Sample A, the measurement and structural models fit the data well. The structural model was confirmed in Sample B, with the same paths being significant and nonsignficant. For both Sample A and Sample B, 35% of the Dietary Restraint variance was explained. These findings support a multifactorial approach to understanding boys’ self-reported dietary restraint, and illuminate the negative influence of sociocultural weight pressures and salutary effects of CRF on early adolescents’ psychosocial well-being and dietary behaviors.
