Visual Artifacts as a Mediating Factor in Collaborative Museum DesignJohnson, Jacquelyn Claire 01 July 2019 (has links)
The process of museum exhibit design includes a variety of activities, including collaboration on teams, consulting learning theories, following process models, brainstorming, performing evaluations, and using visuals. Although some articles mention these topics, very few provide specific details about these practices. This dissertation, which includes three articles, explores how design and visual communication occur in exhibit design. The first article examines how exhibit design teams function. The second article describes how they use visual representations to engage team members in ideation and concept development as they planned for new exhibits. This is based on the assumption that designers need to be actively engaged in the design process to truly be creative and develop innovative ideas. Building off the second article, the third article provides practical implications and examples for professionals in the field. These articles seek to add insight on the design process and use of visuals in museum exhibit design.

Representations From Group Actions On Words And MatricesAnderson, Joel T 01 June 2023 (has links) (PDF)
We provide a combinatorial interpretation of the frequency of any irreducible representation of Sn in representations of Sn arising from group actions on words. Recognizing that representations arising from group actions naturally split across orbits yields combinatorial interpretations of the irreducible decompositions of representations from similar group actions. The generalization from group actions on words to group actions on matrices gives rise to representations that prove to be much less transparent. We share the progress made thus far on the open problem of determining the irreducible decomposition of certain representations of Sm × Sn arising from group actions on matrices.

Women at the Frontlines : Representations of Ukrainian female soldiers in online news mediaStan, Sara January 2023 (has links)
The focus of this paper is gaining a deeper understanding of the discursive ways in which Ukrainian female soldiers are represented in international news media by analyzing online newspaper articles. The research questions are centred around finding out what common discursive representations are predominant in the articles, how these representations are visible, and what discourses are meant to be favored by the authors or publishers. The theory is based on a Foucauldian approach to discourse analysis. A total of eight articles were chosen for analysis from four major newspapers based in the United Kingdom and the United States. The data consisted of both text and images featured in the articles. The main findings of the paper are that even though there is a strong discourse that promotes stereotypical representations of female soldiers, there is also a counter-discourse that brings female soldiers’ voices to the forefront and challenges historically predominant stereotypical representations.

Tiggeri som problem : En kritisk analys av riksdagsmotioner med förslag om att förbjuda tiggeri i Sverige, 2011 - 2021 / Begging as a problem : A critical analysis of motions suggesting a national ban on begging in Sweden submitted to the Swedish parliament, 2011 - 2021Schröder, Mimmi January 2023 (has links)
This essay investigates and analyzes political problemrepresentations of begging within motions containing proposals to ban begging nationally in Sweden. The focus is on what is presented as problematic with the phenomenon of begging and how the same is constructed linguistically to appear as such. The investigation covers a period of time over that decade, from when the first proposal was submitted to Sweden's Riksdag in 2011 up to the last one (before the 2022 election), 2021. The approach is post-structuralist critical and founded in a discrepancy between principles of social work, to word for inclusion, equality and human rights, versus the legislation which risks offending vulnerable individuals in society. A total of 13 motions are analyzed using Carol Bacchi's discourse analysis called the WPR approach ("What's the problem represented to be?"). The result contains four different discourses (language acts) politicians use to problematize begging: that of alienation, ambiguity, disturbance and chain. The essay provides and contributes with an insight and a knowledge of how begging has been presented as a problem politically in Sweden during 2011–2021. The same meanwhile a national ban on begging is under investigation within the Swedish Riksdag, at the time led by the right-wing party Moderaterna and the nationalistic one The Swedish Democrats.

The Documentary: Süßes Gift – Hilfe als Geschäft : A Critical Discourse Analysis of Three Development Projects that have Failed in AfricaBerglund, Stella January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this paper is to examine how European development intervention in Africa iscommunicated in the documentary “Sweet Poison.” For many decades there have beenprojects that were developed in Africa in order to support civilization in the poorest areas. This paper explores how the three projects in Africa, Tanzania, Kenya and Mali werecreated and developed, but not fully completed. These had various consequences overtime. With a reflection of representations, narratives and documentary story-telling, thestudy will use Teun Van Dijk's framework (2004) to analyze the film. The importance ofcritical discourse analysis techniques is well-known and provides an effective strategy toanalyze ideology as well as power in the language. In particular, the dichotomy of in-groupfavoritism vs. out-group derogation seems to be efficient in analytical discursive practices.A semi-structured interview was made with the author of the film to collect important datafor the analysis.

Elevers användning av olika representationsformer i skriftlig matematisk kommunikation : - En riktad kvalitativ innehållsanalys av elevlösningar i matematik / Students’ use of different representations in written mathematical communication : - A qualitative content analysis of students’ solutions in mathematicsHallmén, Anna January 2023 (has links)
Research demonstrate that representation and written communication are two important components in developing students’ mathematical literacy. This study aims to add knowledge about students’ using different representations in their written mathematical communication in high school. A qualitative content analysis of students’ mathematical solutions has been made based on a theoretical framework for students’ use of representations. The analysis of students’ mathematical solutions indicates a big variation in students’ use of representations, both according to which representations can be identified and to the different uses to which the representations are put. The variation in students’ use of representations is influenced by how different representations are combined in different uses in students’ mathematical solutions. The result is an important contribution of knowledge to mathematics teachers because the knowledge can be used to design teaching that aims to develop students’ written mathematical communication.
