Previous issue date: 2005-11-25 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Overall this sciences of religions essay is about architecture and art, but mainly its object is to treat specifically the fields wich refer to both the construction of religious spaces, and the hole art contained inside them and rised from them as well. These fields encircle painting, sculpture and, in addition, furniture and special pieces designed for the indoor spaces. More specifically, this essay also builts and reports its reflections based on the contemporary christian artwork and architectural spaces, produced and projected by artist and vernacular architect Claudio Pastro.
The analysis in this essay approaches Pastro's biography through his unique process of working and criating, as a painter, pictorial artist, architect and sacred art expert. The second chapter explores Pastro's conceptions between sacred art and religious art, which are indeed different: each conception is clearly refeared, explained, discussed, compared to the other ones, and looked over through the eyes of Mircea Eliade's and Rudolf Otto's fenomenology. Still in the field of the Teology of the Art, the thinking of Romano Guardini about the sacred and the religious is also shown.
In the third chapter we have a timeline brief of the history of art and sacred architecture, the bases of Pastro's work; then, a comparative study between his conception about the modern project related to the architecture and the vanguard arts. We also comment some brazilian architects projects, wich he admire and influenced him.
Furthermore we comment the II Council of the Vatican and its propositions of liturgical renewal, wich led to the renew of sacred architeture and art, home of Pastro's realm of inspiration and concepts. We end with the analysis and critical reviewing of nine of his chapels and churches already built. In the conclusion, we comment the repercussion of Claudio Pastro's works, and the importance of his figure within the brazilian artistic and architectural panorama, as well as the concerns and limits of his concepts. Alongside with these questions, we leave to open minds some other further questions to be treated, about the relationships between art and religion, and art and the sacred.

Benátské vlivy na dílo Boccaccia Bocaccina / Venetian influances on the Boccaccio Boccaccino's workJiráková, Hana January 2013 (has links)
(in English) The key theme of my thesis are venetian influences on the Boccaccio Boccaccino's work, who was one of the most important exponents of the Cremonese school of painters. Initially he worked in Genoa, Cremona and Milan and he was influenced by the painters as Leonardo, Bramantino and Boltraffio. In the years 1497-1500 Boccaccino is documented in Ferrara. In this period he executed so-called tondo Gronau, The Christ on the way to Calvary, The Virgin and Child, now in Boston, The Virgin and Child, now in Padua, The Adoration of the Shepherds, now in Naples and Dead Christ supported by an Angel. This works show the influence of Bramantino, umbrian school but also early influence of venetian art. In 1500 or 1501 he painted the altarpiece with Virgin and Child with Sts Peter, Michael, John the Baptist and John the Evangelist for the church of S. Giuliano in Venice. Models of this composition are the S. Cassiano altarpiece of Antonello da Messina and Virgin and Child with Saints which Giovanni Bellini executed for the church of S. Giobbe. Boccaccino's image in S.Giuliano is also inspired by Ercole de'Roberti and Lorenzo Costa. His colours show the influence of Giorgione. In 1506 is Boccaccino documented in Venice but also in Cremona. In the years 1500-1506 he stayed probably in Venice, but he...

Previous issue date: 2018-10-11 / According to Sacrosanctum Concilium 13, pious exercises should be recommended,
but with determination that there should be harmonization with the liturgy. The
Popular Piety can not substitut, in any way, the official liturgical practices of the
Church. In this study we make analysis of the current reality, which will be based on
‗Liquid Modernity‘, expression of the Polish Sociologist Zygmunt Bauman. With
this expression, Bauman identify the moment we are living, in which everything is
predicted to be fleeting, including the human relations. In this context, the
harmonization between Liturgy and Popular Piety is impaired, causing a mismatch
between liturgical practices, with their stable norms, and popular devotions, prone to
change more easily. However, pious exercises should be encouraged, even with the
variants of the present time. For this analysis, the theoretical foundations are sought
in the Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy, documents of the Popes, in the set
of works written by Bauman and many others that help in understanding of the
relation between the Popular Piety and the Liturgy in this period of history which

'Seek the Eyes of Mary': A Widow and a Virgin's Illuminating InvitationKryscynski, Kristina Gayle Heiss 09 April 2020 (has links)
A deep visual analysis of Ludovico Carracci’s 1588 Madonna and Child, Angels, and Saints Francis, Dominic, Mary Magdalene and the Donor Cecilia Bargellini Boncompagni with an emphasis on the role of the patron, the significance of the locality, and the visual semiotics of the Virgin Mary’s gaze in prompting conversion in the repentant prostitutes of the Carmelite convertite convent associated with Ss. Filippo and Giacomo in Bologna, Italy. Including a commentary on contemporary social expectations of modest behavior and the painting’s deliberate incorporation of inappropriate female behavior towards a religious purpose. A discussion of uniquely Carmelite iconography, the use of Ignatian mental prayer in convents, and self-determination in imagery by a Bolognese aristocratic woman.

Paradoxia epidemica in the art of Pieter Bruegel the Elder : an investigation into sixteenth-century parodyCornew, Clive 01 1900 (has links)
Pieter Bruegel the Eider's paintings De verkeerde wereld, Het gevecht tussen Karnava/ en Vasten,
Luilekker/and, Dulle Grief and Landschap, met Icarus' val are interpreted as sixteenth-century parodies
using the paradoxia epidemica as a tropic means for interpreting the artist's wit, irony, parody and
picaresque stance towards his source material and his milieu. Where applicable, other works relating to a
particular argument are also discussed. As a result of this investigation, an original contribution has been
made in the literature on both Bruegel and parody as a form of visual communication. / Art History, Visual Arts & Musicology / M.A. (History of Art)

ADRIANO BERNAREGGI E IL RINNOVAMENTO DELLA CULTURA ECCLESIASTICA ITALIANA (1884 - 1932) / Adriano Bernareggi and italian ecclesiastical cultural renewal (1884-1932)PERSICO, ALESSANDRO 12 April 2014 (has links)
The research focuses the role played by Adriano Bernareggi, priest in Milan, then bishop of Bergamo since 1932, in the renewal movement of ecclesiastical studies during the first three decades of the twentieth century. Trained at the Gregorian and Lateran Universities, in a climate marked by modernism and vatican reaction, Bernareggi taught at the seminary of Milan, from 1909 to 1932, and at the Catholic University, from 1922 to 1926. In these sites, he strove to give a modern response - not modernist – to the spiritual anxiety of modern man, through a new religious language, able to enhance Church history and, especially, its liturgy. Particular attention has been paid to: the teaching, including the attempt to promote an update of the Ratio Studiorum of the Theological Faculty, following lines that anticipated Deus Scientiarum Dominus; the direction of the magazine “La Scuola Cattolica”, that he attempted to transform in a national periodic of sacred sciences, to regenerate religious studies through the application of an historical perspective and critical-philological research method; the participation in the liturgical and artistic movement in Milan, looking to french teachings and Maria Laach, especially to rediscovery the initiation value of rites; the prevostship at St. Vittore al Corpo, a laboratory of a new “liturgical practice”; the role in the debate on the Roman Question and Conciliation.

This research aims to continue the work started in my master's dissertation about the pictorial work of Jesuíno Francisco de Paula Gusmão, known in the history of Brazilian art as Priest Jesuíno do Monte Carmelo (1764-1819). Presented in 2010, the initial studies covered the works of the artist found in the Church of the Ordem Terceira do Carmo de São Paulo and its restoration process, coordinated by the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional - IPHAN. From that time until the present, other relevant discoveries involving Jesuíno were made in the city of Itu (SP): in the Church of Nossa Senhora da Candelária, where the painter priest worked with the Master José Patrício da Silva Manso (1740-1801), parietal paintings from the eighteenth century were rescued and evidence the involvement of other craftsmen hitherto unknown by the researchers, as well as fragments from a clapboard with new paintings by Jesuíno. Thus, the completion of the restoration of the Igreja do Carmo de São Paulo, more recent discoveries of Itu’s Mother Church and the possible recovery of the ceiling painting of the Igreja do Carmo de Itu, also authored by Jesuíno, together with the search for possible iconographic references used by the priest artist, extend the pictorial work of Priest Jesuíno do Monte Carmelo and provide material for that conduct a review of the relevance of its production to the history of São Paulo art and Brazilian art.

HETERODOXY AND RATIONAL THEOLOGY: JEAN LE CLERC AND ORIGENBIANCHI, ANDREA 16 April 2020 (has links)
L’elaborato è diviso in tre sezioni. / The present thesis analyses the reception of the thought of Origen of Alexandria (c. 184-c. 253) in Jean Le Clerc (1657-1736). Its particular focus is on Origen's conception of freedom and the theological doctrines related to it. The goal of this thesis is to uncover, through Le Clerc's use of Origen, some of the argumentative practices and the intellectual dynamics of the time, in particular in religious, especially inter-confessional, debates. This thesis is divided into three main parts. The first part has mainly an introductory character and looks at the epistemological assumptions of Le Clerc and his relationship with intellectual and religious authorities of the past. The second part reviews the various ways in which Le Clerc quoted, referred to or otherwise made use of the thought or the name of Origen in his vast production. This part provides a first result in that it frames, in general, Le Clerc's reception of Origen. This step is, at the same time, also preparatory for the material contained in part three. In the third part, only the material is considered which is strictly related to Origen's idea of freedom and the related theological doctrines of original sin, grace/predestination, and the problem of evil. The result of this analysis, as it appears form the examination of argumentative practices in the previous sections, is that Le Clerc was no simple "Origenist" but neither was he was fully uncommitted to the Origenian cause. A full commitment to Origen, despite this strong sympathy, was still hindered by Le Clerc's epistemological, scriptural and theological outlook.

Seven Movements from "Missa Festiva" (1817) of Marcos Portugal (1762–1830): A Vocal Score with Critical CommentaryBrites Pereira David Coelho, Júlia 05 1900 (has links)
Marcos António da Fonseca Portugal (1762–1830) is considered by several Luso-Brazilian musicologists to be the most prolific and influential Portuguese composer in history, having impacted the Portuguese and Brazilian music scene significantly during his lifetime. Marcos Portugal achieved international fame for his large-scale works, which include sacred compositions, Italian opera seria, as well as farsas and opera buffa in Portuguese. Despite the reputation he achieved during his lifetime, today his works are understudied and underperformed, even in Lusophone countries. Such an oversight is noticeable particularly as regards his sacred music corpus. For this reason, I have chosen Missa Festiva (1817) as the subject of this dissertation. Creating a vocal score of the solo, duo and trio movements of Missa Festiva will be helpful not only for performers, but also for scholars and conductors who wish study this work. A vocal score makes accessible the performance of individual movements when only piano, organ, or another keyboard instrument is available. By facilitating the performance and analysis of Missa Festiva, this document will contribute to the work's dissemination and to a better understanding of the value of early nineteenth-century Luso-Brazilian virtuosic vocal sacred music. The manuscript used for the transcription and orchestral reduction into a vocal score of movements III-IX is BR-Rcm MS CRI-SM59 from the Acervo Musical do Cabido Metropolitano do Rio de Janeiro, from 1818 (images included in the dissertation).
