Angela Cristina Sarvat de Figueiredo 30 October 2008 (has links)
This dissertation, insert on the research segment of Politics and Culture, talks about Eça de Queirozs critical vision about the Catholic Church, the popular catholicism and the Church-State relations in Portugal on the XIX century. The work deepens authors ideas determined in the historical moment named the movement of Regeneration, on the second half of that century, marked by propositions of denunciation concerning to societys decadence, the changes and modernizing reforms in the economic, social, political, educational and cultural structures of Portugal. It also analyses relevant issues relates to politics as the monarchical liberalism, the policy of the portuguese constitucional government, the policy taken by the ultramontanist Vatican and its developments in Portugal, beyond the catholicism established on cultural and political practices. From the use of original sources as journalisticals works wrotten by Eça, published in Brazil and in Portugal, and also examing his letters to his intellectual friends from the 70s Generation , the dissertation argues questions like anticlericalism, antijesuitism, portuguese padroado, regalism and the portuguese cultural project in order to convert Portugal in a secular state government. Observing the extraordinary, acute and sarcastic Eças intelligence, this work conclude for understanding the writer as a great protector of changes in the clerical customs, speechs and concerns of the Catholic Church at that time and also as an exacting voice connected with others intellectuals to the advance of a new performance and engagement of the Catholic Church. At last, this work determines the portuguese author as an great expert among the portuguese intellectuals because he was one of the fundamental protagonists in the cultural and political renovation movement of Portugal influencing its public opinion. He was, as well, a writer of an important and decisive literary and journalist work and, mainly, he was able to impose himself as a real promoter of the modernity in Portugal.

Maynard, Cândido Luiz Santos 22 March 2016 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The wear suffered over time, new technologies and new religious proposals are some of the challenges that evangelical, traditional, Pentecostal and neo-Pentecostal churches faces. This study aims to identify the possible reactions of the churches in the modern neo-Pentecostal, against the intervention of secularization and the role of dispensationalism in this action. After a long and rich historical process of pluralization of our religious matrix. As an instrument we made use of bibliographic research, based on proposals from authors such as Peter Berger, Ricardo Mariano and Charles C. Ryrie, and readings of Brazilian demographic data obtained from the IBGE - Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. We seek to understand how neo-Pentecostal communities have sought to overcome this process, due to the little or apparent lack of symbols that bind their identity to the sacred, contrary to Catholicism that holds a "rich" symbolic capital, though losing their numerical leadership position every decade. What would be its maintenance tool of sacred symbols? We conclude that the use of symbolic capital of the Judaism is being used for this purpose. These appropriations are manifestations in response to pressures, using the dispensationalism, even unconsciously, to legitimize them institutionally.

O governo dos homens na contemporaneidade: laicização do poder e subjetivação massificante / Government of men in contemporaneity: secularization of power and massifying subjetification

Nowadays, nations are organized according to the structure of liberal democracy, a late formation of the liberal discursive practice. Searching for contemporary liberal governmentality specificity, the text makes use of the genealogical method, thus breaking research on provenance and emergence of the object of study. Relying on the analysis of Friedrich Nietzsche and Michel Foucault - respectively, founder and improver of genealogical critique – it verifies what appear to unify its research hypotheses: first, the idea that power as exercised in modernity is the displacement and secularization of a originally religious natured relationship, and secondly, the assertion that, the historically identifiable process of subjects production, is a massification process; modernity would be marked, in an apparent paradox, by the fact that it has a massifying subjectification. The two genealogist philosophers express these theses with the complementary concepts of "herd morality", in the German case, and "pastoral power", in the French case, which refer respectively to the formation of the individual's psychological type of modernity and the incidence mechanisms of power over the bodies subject to it. Foucault notes, however, that in contemporaneity a transmutation of state power which took the model of political economy has changed the general outline of governmentality, from a normalization of the bodies to a regulation of populations: it is the dawn of biopolitics and liberal governmentality. Futhermore, recent decades seem to define itselves by the actual enrollment in new discursive practices, that from the human capital theory and also an update of the homo economicus concept, which only renew Nietzschean diagnosis of the "last man" hegemony / O objetivo do trabalho é averiguar o modo em que se exerce o governo dos homens na contemporaneidade.

Constitucionalismo e resistência em Théodore de Béze: secularização e universalidade do direito de resistir na obra de Du Droit des Magistrats sur leurs sujets de 1574 / Constitutionalism and resistance in Théodore Bèze: secularization and the universality of the right to resist the work Du Droit des magistrats sur leurs sujets, 1574.

Silvio Gabriel Serrano Nunes 14 March 2011 (has links)
This study aims to analysis the political right of resistance developed by Théodore de Bèze in Du Droit des Magistrats, written on 1574, emphasizing the influence of secular and Catholic sources, and the particular way as Bèze communicates with another previous reformers (Lutero, Calvino e Müntzer). / The modern university is generally seen as secular and often averse to religion. Social rörlighet över längre tid : Lärdomar från rekryteringen av präster under 140 år / Social mobility in the long run : Lessons from the recruitment of priests over 140 years

Bjurvald Johnzon, Jesper January 2018 (has links)
The following essay explores the recruitment of Swedish priests between the years 1826 and 1970. The research problem stems from a broad methodological discussion among researchers concerned with what the historical preconditions for social mobility are, and how we are supposed to go about gauging it. A clear fault line between researchers concerns the impact of industrialization and the derivatives of it on social mobility, and whether historical change of this type actually influences upward social mobility at all.The source material utilized consists of biographical records on Swedish priests, using the data provided by these, the study measures social mobility by comparing the representation of surname groups and class attainment in the priest population over time. The identified fault in previous research is expressed by its division into two distinct theories: The Industrialization thesis and The law of mobility. The first theory states that changes in the rate of social mobility occurs in conjunction with industrialization and the latter states that the rate of mobility is constant over time. The applied measurements are procured from vocal supporters of both theories, partly in order to develop reasonable hypotheses for the essay, and partly to compare the measurements themselves. The results show that societal reforms associated with industrialization, explicitly those introduced by the government such as the rationalization of agriculture during the 19th century have a crucial effect on the distribution of surnames and class status. On the other hand, this change was slow and remarkably constant over longer time periods. The conclusion is that industrialization and its derivatives have a significant effect on social mobility, but that the mobility among the Swedish priesthood cannot be properly explained without taking the transformation that the role of priest underwent during the observed period.

Secolarizzazione e ricomposizione del sacro in Italia : il caso delle comunità parrocchiali della Garfagnana / Sécularisation et recomposition du sacré en Italie : le cas des communautés paroissiales de la Garfagnana / Secularisation and recomposition of the sacred in Italy : the case of parish communities in Garfagnana

Rossi, Chiara 24 March 2016 (has links)
This study, included in the wider debate regarding the secularisation process, mainly focuses on the ways in which nowadays secularisation and de-secularisation can coexist in a specific context, convening, at times adding to each other, and thus generating, through a process of decomposition and recomposition of the sacred, unavoidable consequences on individual actions and collective dynamics. Through an ethnographic approach, based on inter-knowledge, on participant observation techniques and on numerous in-depth interviews, the research examines the ongoing changes within a transitioning rural universe, which is remodelling spaces and structures of its religious belief system. The research was carried out in a small valley in Northern Italy (Garfagnana) and the main focus of the study was the parish. In this context, this institution has been over the centuries an important reference point, not only for the religious universe but also for the civil community and still today represents the privileged means by which the church creates and maintains the networkof bonds with its worshippers. The analysis of the dynamics by which , within a parish community, these bonds are preserved, recreated and nurtured has led us towards understanding the catholic identity of this particular region, highlighting the modalities, the motivations and the consequences of religious beliefs, on both an individual and collective level, of the many categories of participants.

Shadow and Voice: The Vampire's Debt to Secular Modernity

Maynard, Luke R. J. 18 December 2013 (has links)
The past few years have seen a renewed critical interest in the vampires and vampirism of English literature, owing both to their growing influence in popular culture and a more inclusive reordering of the literary canon. Much of this recent work has typically approached vampirism through a psychoanalytic lens inherited from Gothic criticism, characterized by a dependence on Freud, Lacan, and Foucault, and often by a model of crisis in which these supernatural figures of terror are supposed to symbolize cultural anxieties with varying degrees of historicity. This dissertation builds upon the narrative of secularization set out in Charles Taylor’s recent work, A Secular Age, to answer the need for a new and alternative narrative of what function the vampire serves within English literature, and how it came to prominence there. The literary history of vampirism is reconsidered in light of the new sociological observations made by Taylor, hinging upon two key methodological principles: first, that Taylor’s new secularization narrative has the potential to reshape the way we think of literature in general and our literary relationship to the supernatural in particular; and second, that the fiction generated during this period of upheaval has much more to tell us about secularization, broadening our understanding of the ideological shifts and changing relationships to the supernatural that brought forth this uniquely modern monster in literature. / Graduate / 0593 / 0318 / 0358 / glukemaynard@gmail.com

Providence: from pronoia to immanent affirmation in John Calvin's Institutes of 1559

Sanchez, Michelle Chaplin 04 June 2016 (has links)
Over the twentieth century and into the present, theorists of secularization and political theology have explored ways that theological arguments have shaped the social, ethical, economic, and political imaginaries of the modern West. In many of these studies, the doctrine of providence has come under scrutiny alongside related theological debates over of the nature of divine sovereignty, glory, the will, and the significance of immanent life in relation to divine transcendence. While it is often taken for granted that the Calvinist branch of Protestant reform likewise had a decisive impact on the shape of the modern West, there has been no extended treatment of Calvin's writing on providence, or related doctrines, which engages these arguments about secularization.
