Aspects of physical appearance and clothing behaviour

Lo Castro, Ann-Marie 06 1900 (has links)
The literature survey reports that persons electing cosmetic plastic surgery for aesthetic or medical reasons, or those persons not electing any form of surgery, often experience physical, psychological and socio-cultural problems. The complexity among the associated variables, body images, identity status, fashionable clothing behaviour and social self-consciousness were investigated comparatively, using a biopsychosocial approach. The samples consisted of cosmetic surgery patients (n=25), Black and White female fashion participants (n=60) and breast oncology case studies (n=3). The research methods included descriptive and inferential statistics. A maximum of six questionnaires was administered per individual. The results indicated that a positive body image perception was related to identity integrity, fashionable dressing and a sense of social acceptance. Insight into the importance placed on the body as a means of self-expression can contribute to successful cosmetic and breast oncology surgery and also promote intercultural harmony, by reducing body-based prejudice. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Historical Reconstruction and Self-Search: A Study of Thomas Pynchon's V.. John Barth's The Sot-Weed Factor. Norman Mailer's The Armies of the Nicrht. Robert Coover's The Public Burning, and E.L. Doctorow's The Book of Daniel

Pak, Inchan 08 1900 (has links)
A search for self through historical reconstruction constitutes a crucial concern of the American postmodern historical novels of Pynchon, Barth, Mailer, Coover, and Doctorow. This concern consists of a self-conscious dramatization, paralleled by contemporary theorists' arguments, of the constructedness of history and individual subject. A historian-character's process of historical inquiry and narrative-making foregrounded in these novels represents the efforts by the postmodern self to (re)construct identity (or identities) in a constructing context of discourse and ideology.

Neues Deutschland – neues Deutschlandbild?

Marx, Jean-Samuel 13 December 2018 (has links)
Reunification not only changed Germany domestically, but also had an important impact on its position in Europe and in the world. The new general framework as well as the generational change in politics in the following years also led to a change in the self-representation of the Federal Republic. All this did not remain without consequences on the perception of the country abroad. The aim of this thesis is to analyse the self-representation of the young “Berlin Republic” and its reception in France from 1990 to the present. The key question is which public image does the German state promote of itself and which image of Germany prevails in France. It will be highlighted how this has changed concretely since reunification, by which factors this development can be explained, and to what extent a correlation exists between Germany’s self-representation and its reception.

Il desiderio della ragione : Hegel e Hobbes / Le désir de la raison : Hegel et Hobbes / The desire of reason : Hegel and Hobbes

Frilli, Guido 09 November 2015 (has links)
This thesis aspires to establish a detailed theoretical comparison between the thought of G. W. F. Hegel and that of Thomas Hobbes. It is my contention that the two thinkers have a common starting point on many fundamental problems of human practical life, such as the account of desire and self-consciousness, the role of passion and happiness in human agency, the phenomenon of right and the nature of the political sovereignty of the State. One of my central points will be the deep connection of Hegel’s practical thought with two points of the Hobbesian criticism of ancient ethics: namely, the refutation of the classical question of the good life as the basis of human conduct and association, and the superiority of art over nature. Hence, desire is described by both thinkers as a movement of individual self-affirmation and causality over the world, not as a teleological tension towards different kinds of goods; and the human will becomes, for both equally, the source of all practical, juridical and political normativity. Nonetheless, the account of these similarities will be preparatory to the analysis of the crucial differences between Hegel’s and Hobbes’ solutions. Whereas for Hobbes the limitation of the natural desire of man is the prerequisite for all order, Hegelian Bildung [education] is the mean of the rationalization of desire. In the last analysis, the desire of individuals is for Hegel a form of manifestation of the all-pervading impulse of reason to give itself presence and endurance in reality.

How The Dialectical Relationship Between Consciousness And Life Is Differentiated In Hegel

Kibar, Sibel 01 June 2005 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study is to present the different approaches, which Hegel and Marx have developed regarding the relation between consciousness and life, consistent with their aims. Hegel&rsquo / s aim is to combine all the opposed ideas and beliefs proposed throughout the history of philosophy into a unified whole. Hegel&rsquo / s dialectics which is immanent to life can also explain the opposition between consciousness and life. Self-consciousness, which appears as subjectivity in Hegel&rsquo / s philosophy, at first, treats the life as an object of desire. Later, however, self-consciousness which cannot thus realize itself desires another self-consciousness who will recognize itself, so it relates with an other self-consciousness. This relation is defined as a &ldquo / life and death struggle&rdquo / . At the end of the struggle, there arise new forms of self-consciousnesses, Master and Slave. While the Slave produces for its Master, it relates itself to Life and this relation between Slave and Life brings about Slave as self-consciousness. On the other hand, the aim of Marx is not only to combine the oppositions but also to create a worldly philosophy. To this end, Marx puts economic relations of human beings at the centre of his theory. According to Marx, relations of production condition classes. While one class produces, the other exploits the productions of the former class. In Hegel, the Slave obtains its certainty as self-consciousness while it produces, whereas in Marx, the worker, who produces, is alienated form him/herself in the capitalist mode of production. To sum up, both Hegel and Marx emphasize the mutual relation between consciousness and life, but their divergent aims lead to them constructing this relation with different concepts on different foundations.

Benutting van Gestaltspelterapie met die fokus op selfondersteuning by die kind in die middelkinderjare / The utilization of Gestalt play therapy and self-support with the child in middle childhood years

Stone, Maria Magdalena 30 November 2007 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / In this study the researcher explored and described the use of Gestalt play therapy with specific focus on self-support with the child in middle childhood years. A literature study was undertaken to examine the concepts of child, Gestalt play therapy, self-support and the play therapy process. This literature study forms the theoretical frame in which this study was done. After the completion of the literature study, the empirical study was conducted. The researcher made use of unstructured interviews within a intrinsic single case study in order to compile research data. During the empirical study ten therapy sessions were conducted with the participant which was explored within the framework of qualitative research methodology. The researcher was able to use ample Gestalt play therapy concepts and principles during the description of the case study in order to explore self-support within the child during middle childhood. These concepts and principles will be discussed in depth within this study. / Social Work / M.Diac. (Spelterapie-rigting)

[en] IMPLICIT INSIGHT INTO BIPOLAR DISORDER / [pt] INSIGHT IMPLÍCITO NO TRANSTORNO BIPOLAR

RODRIGO LEAO FERREIRA DO NASCIMENTO 18 July 2018 (has links)
[en] Lack of insight is usually reported in Bipolar Disorder (TB), especially when patients have seen the manic pole of the disorder. This lack of verbal awareness of deficits, signs and symptoms of the disorder may be accompanied by an implicit insight, which is the indirect demonstration of some level of knowledge about the disease or a disability with partial or total loss of verbal recognition. Two studies were conducted to verify the relationships between explicit and implicit forms of insight into TB. For this, a theoretical model known as The Cognitive Awareness Model (CAM) was used, which allows to investigate dissociations in the patterns of implicit and explicit consciousness. In the first study, participants were assessed for a number of clinical variables, including an explicit insight measure, as well as an implicit insight measure with depression and mania-related stimuli. In the second study, participants were also tested for clinical variables, including an explicit insight measure, as well as an implicit insight measure with stimuli linked to healthy and ill status. The results of both studies pointed to differences in measures of explicit insight between the manic and euthymic groups and demonstrated differences in mean reaction time for implied self-associations for condition. From these results, it can be suggested that patients in mania explicitly self-evaluate in a similar way to patients in euthymia, which can lead to impairment in adherence to treatment, whereas bipolar patients presented an implicit insight for symptoms and for the patient s condition evaluated.

The hypothesis that guides research is that there is no way to understand the theories of Marx without understanding its epicurean ontology, from the clues left in his professorial thesis, or, more broadly, in the period 1835-1841 . Thus, during the research it was necessary to establish an overview of the ontological foundations of Marx's thought and place of fetishism, in addition to the stroke path, analyzing the evolution of the concept of fetishism in the light of wider horizon of his thought, weaving a summary of the most relevant passages considered in the path taken by this influential advocate of socialism around the theme. Therefore, we established a dialogue with some theoretical fetish theory of the second half of the twentieth century and early twenty-first century, which, in most cases, or interpret Marx's thought as concrete itself and the laws of history which inevitably led to the victory of the proletariat, or identify their theory of value with the fetishism and reduce the ideology of the hegemony of exchange value and colonial prejudice of nineteenthcentury anthropology, advocating a purely rhetorical use of the concept in Marx. Finally, there are several key issues guided by today in order to establish some guidelines that helped to think the centrality of consciousness industry in the production of human life, insignia of the present day, when the production became immaterial and established a global system of fetishism in the struggle for consciousness, the arena in which it locks the clash between the main worldviews.

Legrain, Laure 18 December 2010 (has links)
