The Flesh and the Devil: Beliefs About Religious Evil and Views of Sexual Morality

Baker, Joseph O., Molle, Andrea, Bader, Christopher D. 03 March 2020 (has links)
We examine an understudied connection between religion and sexuality: beliefs about the reality of supernatural evil (Satan, hell, and demons). After controlling for multiple other aspects of religiosity, beliefs about religious evil remain a strong and consistent predictor of attitudes about issues involving sexuality, including abortion, homosexuality, premarital sex, extramarital sex, and pornography use. Further, the effects of religious service attendance on attitudes about sexuality are contingent upon beliefs about religious evil. Moral condemnation of non-traditional sexuality is significantly higher among regular religious participants who believe strongly in religious evil compared to actively religious people who disbelieve in religious evil, as well as compared to people who do not attend religious services. Beliefs about religious evil are therefore central to understanding the empirical connections between religion and support for conservative, traditional views of sexual morality.

Estado e moralidade sexual: respondendo aos pleitos jurídicos de pessoas transgêneras / State and sexual morality: answering the juridical claims of transgender people

Lago, Pablo Antonio 26 May 2017 (has links)
This thesis aims to identify and defend the main rights of transgender people, particularly those related to the states duty to treat all citizens with equal consideration and respect. To do that, this thesis is grounded on the different meanings of right presented by Ronald Dworkin, especially on the distinction between moral rights and policies. It is also based on a conception of the juridical concept of gender, which has two central dimensions: the expression of ones gender (on the masculinity/femininity spectrum) and the social recognition that one belongs to a certain gender category. It is argued that this conception of gender is fundamental for the proper interpretation and solution of legal issues involving gender, such as civil identification (name and sex/gender assignment), retirement scheme, protective laws and affirmative policies etc. These arguments are preceded by a brief explanation of transgenderism, which goes far beyond what is typically analyzed by jurists. An analysis of the state and sexual morality relations is offered as well, which is done mainly through the criticism of John Finnis and Christopher Tollefsens conception of sex and gender. In short, Finnis and Tollefsen argue that ones gender should be determined by ones biological sex. Instead, this thesis defends the conceptual separation between biological sex and gender, considering gender the most relevant category for legal and social purposes. Moreover, based on Ronald Dworkins theorization, it is argued that genders freedom of expression corresponds to one of the leading moral rights of transgender people, ensuring the autonomy and the ethical independence of such individuals. It concludes that the conceptions and theory defended in this thesis correspond to the rationale for answering legal problems of transgender people, even those that are not mentioned.

Validating Beliefs: Liberal And Conservative Protestant Views of Sexual Morality in America

Smith, Richard Maurice January 2009 (has links)
While many debates about sexual morality seem to be dominated by conservative, right wing Protestants, there are differing worldviews within Protestantism as there are in the larger American culture. In Protestantism, disparate beliefs about sexual morality have caused division between groups. Concurrently, these differing perspectives have bled into the larger discourse about sexual morality in the United States. Each group has spokespeople who attempt to validate what individuals should believe about issues like the family, sexuality, and how Protestants, and Americans in general, should think and act regarding these issues. Prior research provided a limited analysis about the views and conversations of these spokespeople and their arguments to validate their positions on sexual morality issues. To better understand how Protestants attempt to validate their beliefs, I focus on what liberals and conservatives say about sexual morality issues. In particular, what do those in influential positions (i.e., authors and pastors) tell others? To answer this question, I conduct a content analysis of 30 Protestant sex advice manuals and 20 in-depth pastoral interviews. The results indicate not only the differences and similarities of beliefs, but also that many spokespeople use various forms of validation besides, or in addition to, biblical texts. The influential are influenced greatly by their own personal biases and views of gender, maybe even more than their particular religious beliefs. Future research should explore whether there is a definitive correlation between spokespersons' messages and listeners' adherence. / Sociology

No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 2518793 bytes, checksum: d1eaa9b2aad2c47b382f55524de1d974 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-08-07 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This research had as objective recounts the history of the woman Quitéria Bandeira de Melo and the priest Antônio Soares Barbosa, both of them accused of articulating a supposed conspiracy to murder Jerônimo José de Melo e Castro, governor of Parahyba territory during the period from 1764 to 1797. In order to do that, an analysis of the discursive practice related to the sexual, religious, and gender morality in that colonial possession in the second half of the eighteenth-century was made. The study used as source copies of the speeches contained in the manuscripts hold by the Foreign Historical File of Lisbon, Portugal. The analysis was made in the perspective of the Critical Discourse Studies with focus on the relationships of power related to the gender category. It is expected that the result of this research can contribute to a better understanding of the religious moral conduct imposed to women through the discursive practices in the period from 1770 to 1785 in the colonial Parahyba.

Gonçalves, Diego Santos 31 August 2016 (has links)
Fundação de Apoio a Pesquisa e à Inovação Tecnológica do Estado de Sergipe - FAPITEC/SE / The main goal of this paper is to discuss some relations that may be established between the subject of sexuality and culture through Freud’s work, more especifically the so called “first topic” period of his work, which withholds the texts that were published by Freud before the turn of events in the 1920’s. First of all, we will show how the theme of sexuality was since the beggining put in question by freudian psychanalitical theory regarding the clinic – namely, with the emergency, at Freud’s time, of a large number of neurosis cases. In this discussion we will approach the clinic distinction suggested by Freud between psiconeurosis and actual neuroses, delimiting the specificities of this cases and the differences in handling the sexual excitation in both. Afterwards, we will make a collection of the development of a Freudian conception of symptom, through the introductory conferences pronounced by Freud about this subject. In the next chapter, we will discuss the making of a freudian conception of sexuality, more especifically, on how this conception distinguished a lot of that shared by the medical knowledge back then, on how Freud’s fisicalist orientation had an effect on him and how the development of the concept of narcissism took this conception to the next step. In our third chapter, our goal is to narrow the links between the themes of sexuality and culture, through the reading of some sociological Freudian texts. With this end in sight, we will make a rigorous exam of two important texts from Freud’s work, Civilized Sexual Morality and Totem e tabu, so that we can point out the connections between the clinic and the culture through the strife among instinctual demands and the other, represented by the social values. Up next, we will do some observations about sublimation as a valuable instinctual end to the culture, through an exam of the construction of this concept in Freud and by taking the figure of the artist as a reference. In the end, we will make some considerations about the results of our work, emphasizing how we cannot think satisfactorily the clinical setting without a broad knowledge of the factors that condition a particular social estructure.

XIV-XV)

Conte Aguilar, Lucía 21 September 2012 (has links)
Medieval Catholic Church attempted to reform the moral of its members by focusing on aspects related to sexual morality in the 14th C in Barcelona. This thesis explains the mechanisms of such control and compiles the information that pastoral visits and Episcopal trials provide about the attempts to regulate sexual relationship behaviors and conducts, such as: adultery, incest, prostitution and specially Clergy’s concubinage. This thesis supports the statement that when these mechanisms for control were activated by the Catholic Church, they stemmed from distrust –or suspicion- towards women. Such position led to a fierce control of sexual behavior for all Catholic Church members and particularly the Clergy. The efforts made to reform moral behavior had different effects on issues addressed. However, the real consequence –which might not have been deliberate- was the image definition of a dangerous woman, and fighting the Witch.
