Helander, Agnes, Selin, Elin January 2018 (has links)
Fair value has been discussed since its introduction in accounting in 2005. The accounting standard IAS 41 forced the companies in agriculture, such as forest industry companies, to value their biological assets at fair value. Earlier studies have shown that this increased the value relevance. In order for the information to be value relevant the accounting amount should have an association with the stock price. IFRS 13 was introduced to complement IAS 41 and provide a more unitary consensus on what fair value is. It also provides a guide on how the value is determined and additional disclosures requirements. Should this supplementary standard IFRS 13 increase the value relevance of the accounting for the forest industry? This was investigated through a study of listed companies in the forest industry located in Sweden and Finland. The relationship was studied through correlation and regression analyzes, where the variables share price, equity per share and earnings per share were examined. The explanatory power showed that equity per share and earnings per share were not able to explain share price at a higher level after the introduction; IFRS 13 did not increase value relevance for all the variables together. On the other hand, it was found that the variable earnings per share individually gave an increase in value relevance, which imply that investors care more about the income statement than the balance sheet.

Svensson, Lotten, Hansson, Frida January 2021 (has links)
Background and problem: There is a need for more research that is specific to a particular branch of industry when it comes to capital budgeting. Especially when it comes to mapping how companies within the Swedish forest industry proceed capital budgeting when investing in tangible fixed assets. The reason for this is that the research regarding the subject within the industry is either made abroad, focusing only on a few companies or excluding the non-financial considerations that are made during the capital budgeting process. It is not reasonable to not take these considerations into account, due to the fact that it has a great impact on the capital investment decision. Besides this, it is through both the financial and the non-financial consequences that the complex reality can be captured. In other words, capital budgeting can only be studied in large when including both financial and non-financial considerations at the same time as there is a need to delimit the research to one industry and one country.  Purpose: The purpose of this study is to map how companies within the Swedish forest industry handle capital budgeting when investing in tangible fixed assets. The mapping will be done by determining which calculation methods that are frequently used and what financial and non-financial considerations that are made. The purpose is also to define the reasons as to why the Swedish forest companies prioritize precisely these considerations when managing capital budgeting. The ambition is to make sure that the research’s conclusions depict capital budgeting in the industry and trought that contribute to a greater understanding of the practical application of capital budgeting within Swedish forest industry.  Method: The thesis is primarily described as a qualitative research that is based on interviews. The empirical data is mostly gathered through semi structured interviews with respondents from different Swedish forest companies and the interviews are supplemented with information from various websites, annual reports and internal documents.  Conclusions: Swedish forest companies are influenced by a number of factors which in turn affects how they handle capital budgeting when investing in tangible fixed assets. The financial considerations are mainly found through the usage of different investment calculation methods, where the payback method followed by the net present value method are most commonly used. The non-financial considerations are mainly characterized by industry specific conditions together with a focus on environment, security and competitiveness.

Rexhepi, Gledis, López, Sandra January 2022 (has links)
Forestry stands for 12% of the global greenhouse emissions which makes forestry an important policy area for sustainable development. On the 16th of July 2021, the EU’s new forest strategy was released. Since 2018 Sweden has its own forest program. Due to the new EU forest strategy receiving a lot of criticism, it is clear that the forest policy in EU and Sweden have different understandings on the forests' role for sustainable development. This thesis aims to explore how different understandings of a policy problem are expressed in a case of multi-level governance, which in this case is forest policy. To investigate this, we use the method of discourse analysis where the analytical tool applied is Carol Bacchi's “What’s the problem represented to be?”- framework. Our approach consists of four interrelated questions that are asked to the policy documents, which lead to an understanding of how problems are represented as well as which discursive effects these problematizations create. The study shows that the EU and Sweden's forest policies have different understandings on how the forest best should contribute to climate change. These differences create certain discursive effects where the Swedish forest policies to a larger extent benefit the forest industry and the EU forest policy to a larger extent sees the intrinsic value of nature as well as incorporates the indigenous perspective.

Understanding The Impact Of Market demand For Paper And Paperboard On Swedish Ports : A scenario planning approach

Persson, Hanna, Bodiroga, Dejan January 2023 (has links)
Background: The global marketplace is characterized by rapid and constantchange, resulting in complex logistics systems. The port industry, which is a crucial link in the supply chain, seeks to understand the complexity of market dynamics. Ports should understand the changing market dynamics to better meet the market demand and have a competitive advantage. One representative from the port industry is Swedish ports and the Port of Gothenburg, which will be the focus of this thesis. The market demand for paper and paperboard has been a significant driver of shipping activities in Swedish ports. The market demand for bulk and container shipping is also relevant due to its influence on the port’s operation. Furthermore, itis essential for port authorities to understand the demand-oriented infrastructure to develop strategies to meet the market dynamics. Purpose: This thesis has been undertaken on behalf of the PoG. The purpose of the thesis is to provide a clearer understanding of how the current and future market demand of paper and paperboard influence Swedish ports with scenario planning. Based on the future market demand for paper and paperboard, additional information of the future market demand for bulk and container will be included in the scenarios. By using the scenarios, recommendations will be given regarding investments the port authority at PoG needs to implement as a response to future paper and paperboard market demand. Methodology: The thesis has a qualitative case study with Port of Gothenburg as the study object. Data collection has been conducted through semi- and unstructuredinterviews from the Swedish forest industry, three forest companies and port authority at Port of Gothenburg. Additionally, scenario planning will be the main analysis method in this thesis. Conclusion: The current market demand for paper and paperboard indicates that demand for paper is decreasing, while demand for paperboard is increasing. The future market demand for paper and paperboard can develop in several ways. The authors of this thesis believe that the market demand for paper will have a structural fall with an exception for special paper. While paperboard will have a continuous increase. Furthermore, there is currently an increase of bulk and container shipping in the Port of Gothenburg. The authors believe that future market demand for bulk will be stable, while container will have an increased trend. However, as the market demand is hard to predict, the thesis presents four scenarios of different futureoutcomes of market demand for paper, paperboard, bulk- and container shipping. There are several investments needed for the Port of Gothenburg to respond to theestablished demand scenarios. Investments that will benefit Port of Gothenburg themost are Port Community System (PCS), Integrated Warehouse ManagementSystem (IWMS), Real-Time Location System (RTLS), development of port quays, larger quay cranes and floating islands, and cold ironing and renewable energy. Key words: Paper, Paperboard, forest industry, bulk, container, cargo shipping, seaport, Port of Gothenburg, scenario planning, port investments

Utveckling av förslag till en hållbarhetsutbildning för anställda vid ett pappersbruk / Proposal of a sustainability education for paper mill staff

Hörnlund, Ewa January 2019 (has links)
Utbildningen behandlar: 1. Introduktion till miljöproblem och hållbar utveckling 2. SCA:s hållbarhetsmål och hållbarhetsarbete 3. Hur kemikalier och utsläpp påverkar vår natur 4. Sundsvalls och fabrikens historia ur ett miljöperspektiv 5. Ortviken som ett kretslopp 6. Avslutande diskussion och Workshop. / SCA is one of the biggest private forest owners in Europe and includes different mills in the north of Sweden, where Ortviken Paper mill, a pulp and paper factory, is one of these. Ortviken Paper mill produce publication paper from its own mechanical pulp and have both uncoated qualities and LWC-paper. SCA and Ortviken Paper mill works continuously towards a sustainable development and have lower their impact on the environment considerably over the last decades, just as all forestry in Sweden. The company’s management want to offer their staff a sustainability education with focus on environmental aspects to rise the staff’s competence in sustainability. Rise sustainability competencies is in line with what UNESCO (United Nation Education Science and Culture Organisation) highlights, education is crucial if we want to reach the global sustainable development goals. UNESCO have developed goals for ESD, education for sustainable development, with aim that individuals should develop competences which is considered important to act responsible in a sustainable manner in complex situations. The aim with this work is to design a sustainability education with an environmental focus to Ortviken Paper Mill. To do so, a pre-study and a survey have been done. The pre-study was an observation and created a picture of the mills activities and was a basis for the survey. The survey included interviews and a questionnaire which have been analysed thematically. Since the education is directed to adults and its goal is to rise the staff’s competence in environmental questions, adult education and ESD is chosen as a theoretical basis to the work.It was relieved in the survey that the education should be flexible, preferable designed as an e-learning and the staff learns best through discussion and communications with others. It also relieved that the staff’s experiences of education differ from elementary school to university, and that their knowledge about environmental issues and sustainable development varies. For the content in the education, it relieved in the survey that system thinking, chemicals and emissions impact on nature, and what individuals can do to lower the mills emissions as important or interesting. Since the staff’s knowledge varies and according to the chosen theory, an introduction about environmental issues and sustainable development is highly recommended. The education suggests being divided into six different parts, where the first five are designed as e-learning and the last part is a concluding discussion meeting. The parts in the education suggest focussing on: (i) Introduction to environmental issues and sustainable development (ii) SCA: s sustainability goals (iii) Chemicals and emissions impact on nature (iv) Sundsvall and the paper mills history from an environmental view (v) Ortviken as a cycle (vi) Concluding discussion and Workshop

I’m the one running things here, I’m the one you need to talk to” : A qualitative study on women’s experiences of getting to and working in the male dominated forest industry

Nordberg, Astrid January 2023 (has links)
Men and women in the corporation’. / Despite being considered one of the leading countries in gender equality, Sweden has one of the most gender-segregated labour markets in Europe, with a clear division between where a majority of men and a majority of women are found in the workforce. This study interviewed women working in two of the largest forestry companies in Värmland, with the aim of investigating their experiences of entering and working in a male-dominated sector, in order to shed light on factors that contribute to maintaining a gender-segregated labour market. The research questions addressed in this study are: What factors have influenced women's entry into the forest industry and what shapes the experience of being a woman in the forest industry? The study employs a qualitative method using semi-structured interviews as the data collection material. The theoretical framework is based on Berger and Luckmann's (1991) "Social Construction of Reality," West and Zimmerman's (1987) theory of "doing gender," and Kanter's (1993) "Men and Women in the Corporation". The results indicate that participants' journey into the forestry industry has been influenced by family, place of upbringing and education. In addition to the factors encountered upon entering the industry, the individual's self-image in relation to the perception of what kind of person fits into the forestry industry has also been identified as a possible influencing factor in women's entry into the industry. The results reveal that participants perceive the forestry industry as welcoming and accessible to all types of people. However, a certain image of what it takes to thrive in the industry is presented in the material. The image portrayed is closer to a masculine ideal, while feminine qualities are presented as less advantageous. Participants do not perceive any differential treatment based on their gender; however, their narratives about being a woman in a male-dominated industry highlight experiences of encountering resistance, questioning, and pressure to conform to the prevailing ideals. Furthermore, a pattern is identified where women follow other women within the organization, which is presented as both a barrier and a stepping stone for women in these organizations. In summary, the results suggest that old values still persist within the organization and risk perpetuating gender segregation in the labour market, despite the participants themselves not necessarily sharing that perception.

Artificial Intelligence in the Pulp and Paper Industry : Current State and Future Trends / Artificiell Intelligens i Massa- och Pappersindustrin : Nuläge och Framtida Trender

Nystad, Marcus, Lindblom, Lukas January 2020 (has links)
The advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have received large attention in recent years and increased awareness has led to massive societal benefits and new opportunities for industries able to capitalize on these emerging technologies. The pulp and paper industry is going through one of the most considerable transformations into Industry 4.0. Integrating AI technology in the manufacturing process of the pulp and paper industry has shown great potential, but there are uncertainties which direction companies are heading. This study is an investigation of the pulp and paper industry in collaboration with IBM that aims to fill a gap between academia and the progress companies are making. More specifically, this thesis is a multiple case study of the current state and barriers of AI technology in the Swedish pulp and paper industry, the future trends and expectations of AI and the way organizations are managing AI initiatives Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 participants from three perspectives and the data was thematically coded. Our analysis shows that the use of AI varies, and companies are primarily experimenting with a still immature technology. Several trends and areas with future potential were identified and it was shown that digital innovation management is highly regarded. We conclude that there are several barriers hindering further use of AI. However, continued progress with AI will provide large benefit long term in areas such as predictive maintenance and process optimization. Several measures taken to support initiatives with AI were identified and discussed. We encourage managers to take appropriate actions in the continued work toward AI integration and encourage further research in the area of potential reworks in R&D.
