Transportation planning via location-based social networking data : exploring many-to-many connectionsCebelak, Meredith Kimberly 17 September 2015 (has links)
Today’s metropolitan areas see changes in populations and land development occurring at faster rates than transportation planning can be updated. This dissertation explores the use of a new dataset from the location-based social networking spectrum to analyze origin-destination travel demand within Austin, TX. A detailed exploration of the proposed data source is conducted to determine its overall capabilities with respect to the Austin area demographics. A new methodology is proposed for the creation of origin-destination matrices using a peer-to-peer modeling structure. This methodology is compared against a previously examined and more traditional approach, the doubly-constrained gravity model, to understand the capabilities of both models with various friction functions. Each method is examined within the constructs of the study area’s existing origin-destination matrix by examining the coincidence ratios, mean errors, mean absolute errors, frequency ratios, swap ratios, trip length distributions, zonal trip generation and attraction heat maps, and zonal origin-destination flow patterns. Through multiple measures, this dissertation provides initial interpretations of the robust Foursquare data collected for the Austin area. Based upon the data analytics performed, the Foursquare data source is shown to be capable of providing immensely detailed spatial-temporal data that can be utilized as a supplementary data source to traditional transportation planning data collection methods or in conjunction with other data sources, such as social networking platforms. The examination of the proposed peer-to-peer methodology presented within this dissertation provides a first look at the potential of many-to-many modeling for transportation planning. The peer-to-peer model was found to be superior to the doubly-constrained gravity model with respect to intrazonal trips. Furthermore, the peer-to-peer model was found to better estimate productions, attractions, and zone to zone movements when a linear function was used for long trips, and was computationally more proficient for all models examined.

Power and the vélorution: cycling advocacy, social networking and grassroots change in Winnipeg, MBKliewer, Karin Jonelle 22 December 2009 (has links)
Bike to the Future is an Active Transportation advocacy organization in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Since its incorporation in 2007, active transportation attitudes, policies, funding, and infrastructure have improved substantially in the city. Many successes have been attributed to this organization, representatives of which are now considered to be the Winnipeg experts in cycling infrastructure and policy creation. This thesis explores how people who use (or want to use) a comparatively marginalized traffic form empowered themselves and spurred on positive changes to cycling policy and infrastructure.
The literature review offers a larger context for the importance of power analysis, collaborative planning and the work of Bike to the Future. This provides a framework overview of power discussions in planning discourse, and connects heterarchical power structures to collaborative planning theory and strategic networking.
Research for this project involved a case study of the work of Bike to the Future. Four different research methods were employed during different stages of research, including media and literature searches (of news sources, blogs, and planning literature), a case study, semi-structured interviews, and participant observation.
The work of Bike to the Future has also shown that influence can be strengthened when different power resources—powers of knowledge, speech, place, and political and market powers – are used. The value of using different power structures, hierarchical and heterarchical, is highlighted. In order to be most effective, this study suggests all structures and resources must be used cooperatively and collaboratively.
Because of its ability to engage wide audiences, recognize interdependence, and connect the different types of knowledge and expertise, Bike to the Future can be understood as a collaborative success. Although at the time of this study, this organization was susceptible to volunteer schedules and burnout, its networking potential and networking power was strong. These will continue to be major assets in the evolution of this organization evolution.
Lessons learned from this research process may be useful for many other groups seeking to expand their influence in decision-making realms and on multiple fronts.

1. To investigate the current situations and the motivations of literature creators operating the social network sites.
2. To investigate the relations and the influences between blogs and literature creators’ writing.
3. To investigate the relations and the influences between Facebook and literature creators’ writing.
4. To investigate how literature creators interact with readers on blogs and Facebook.
5. To investigate literature creators’ opinions of writing on social network sites and the interaction with readers.
6. To compare the similarities and dissimilarities of literature creators’ blogs to Facebook.
In order to realize whether blogs and Facebook changed literature creators’ way of writing and the interactions with the readers, the researcher selected ten writers each from blogs and Facebook to observe and record. Out of the 20 writers, there were five writers of blogs and five of Facebook interviewed under the qualitative research methods. The data were analyzed, and the results are as follows:
1. Literature creators’ motivations and reasons of managing blogs are significantly related to the works, whereas the motivations and reasons of managing Facebook are unrelated to the works.
2. The current situations of literature creators’ operation to Facebook are more active than blogs.
3. Both of blogs and Facebook are related to literature creators’ works.
4. Facebook’s influences on the literary creations are significantly greater than blogs.
5. The styles of literature creators’ posts on the blog are essentially consistent with the published works; however, the styles of literature creators’ posts on Facebook are partly consistent and partly divergent.
6. The interactions with readers through Facebook are much better than blogs.
7. Literature creators hold positive attitudes toward publishing their works post on Facebook.
8. Literature creators think that the advantages of interacting with the readers on the Internet outweigh the shortcomings, and most of them enjoy doing so.
9. Literature creators think that Facebook provides more literary possibilities than blogs.

The Internet and the anti-HST movement: considerations for social movements in the Internet age. / Role of the Internet in the anti-HST movementSevenhuysen, Tim 10 November 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis project was to investigate the role played by the internet in the movement to abolish the Harmonized Sales Tax in British Columbia. A constructivist grounded theory approach was applied to data collection and analysis: specifically, five participants in the anti-HST movement were interviewed, and interview data was triangulated with observations of the movement's online activities. This study analysed the relationship between social forces and the structures of online spaces, identifying several ways that internet structure affected the shape of the movement. In addition, this study found that while the anti-HST movement bore many traits of a traditional, political-economic social movement, some elements of new social movement theory and practice were present within the movement. Finally, the study explored the homogenizing tendencies of online interaction, and how those tendencies affected individuals' interaction with the movement, and the discourses that informed and organized the movement. / Graduate

Previous issue date: 2016-08-30 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The present article has the intuitive purpose of constituting an analytical research on a youth that makes up a Rede de Eixo (FdE) - the network that serves hundreds of collectives engaged in cultural production, independent media and political activism throughout Brazil and some cities in Latin America. As a purpose, from this phenomenon of a hybrid nature that transits in the space of civil society under the aspects of social movement and political organization, to establish a panorama of how this youth culture produces spaces of resistance and contestation making use, or re-appropriating of Mechanisms of contemporary society to counter it. Using some ethnographic procedures and establishing empirical research based on participant observation, documental analysis and in-depth interviews, going through network theories, new social movements, the fluidity of the concept of youth, crowd and other perspectives of Counter-hegemony, the work must go through a theoretical-methodological "crossroads" that leads us to a reflection on how the “NINJA Media”, one of the initiatives led by the Youth of the FdE and one of the most expressive actions coordinated by the organization, replaces the Network, showing the highlights of the struggles Juveniles and establishes alternative links to power relations.
