Grammatical features of African American Vernacular English in the movie Sextuplets : A sociolinguistics study of the speech of the two African American characters Alan and DawnHelgotsson, Maria January 2021 (has links)
African American Vernacular English (AAVE) has been extensively explored in previous research in sociolinguistics. However, the portrayal of the sociolect in movies is still not widely researched. In order to address this gap, the purpose of this thesis is to study how AAVE is used in the movie Sextuplets (2019), directed by Michael Tiddes and co-produced by Marlon Wayans. The material used was the script excerpted from Subslikescript (2019) [www], and the study was delimited to the speech of the two characters Alan and Dawn. The method used was close reading of these two characters’ lines in order to identify four grammatical features identified in previous research as associated with AAVE: negation ain´t+ multiple negation with ain´t, multiple negation, copula BE absence and Invariant BE. In addition, the data analysis procedure also involved identification of AAVE avoidance, i.e., instances where the characters had the opportunity to use the AAVE features but opted for their General American counterparts instead. The results show that all four AAVE features occurred in the speech of both characters, and the structures in which these features occur conforms to findings from previous studies of AAVE usage in authentic contexts. The findings also display extensive differences in frequency between the two characters’ use of AAVE. These differences can be related to their social background. Alan is portrayed as a wealthy African American male, whereas Dawn is presented as a troublemaker who has been in and out of jail. The speech of these two characters is realistic in the sense that it reproduces grammatical features of AAVE noted in previous research on language use in authentic contexts. In addition, the differences between the two characters can be said to reproduce stereotypes of how African Americans from different social classes use AAVE.

Ett möte mellan två skrivkulturer : Några högstadieungdomars syn på och bruk av skrift vid skol- respektive privatskrivande / An encounter between two writing cultures : Some secondary school students’ views on and use of writing in school and in private lifeLarsson, Nils January 2011 (has links)
The aim of this study is to shed light on and describe a number of secondary school students’ writing practices and their attitudes towards these practices. The material used in the study comes from a secondary school in a suburb of Stockholm where most of the students are bilingual. The entire study comprises five different smaller studies: a questionnaire, a number of interviews, classroom observations, observations of one particular boy’s writing practices and studies of the same boy’s texts. The results of these smaller studies show that a form of encounter between two different writing cultures probably takes place in school. These two writing cultures are, on the one hand, one that is concerned with the students’ school work and, on the other, one that constitutes the private writing culture in which young people indulge when they are not occupied with school work. The study shows that there are obvious differences between these two cultures when it comes to students’ attitudes to writing. Their attitudes to private writing are far more positive than to school writing. A further finding of the study is that there are evident differences between the attitudes of girls and boys to writing, although these are most obvious in the students’ school writing. In private writing the differences are smaller, although some boys claim not to write at all in private, even though they send a great many text messages. One possible implication of the study is that school writing would probably benefit from a widening of the concept of writing to become amore communicative form of writing.

“O Negro No Poder -The Power in Black” : Language forms in lyrics from different Blocos Afro reflecting Afro-Brazilian identity work in the city of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil thematically connected to negritude.Ramos Pinheiro, Jenny January 2023 (has links)
The present study aims to test my hypothesis that the language forms found in the Blocos Afro discourses in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil can be seen as expressions of Afro-Brazilian and/or Blocos Afro identity work and can also be seen as being, at least thematically, connected to the negritude movement. The study is based on samples created of Blocos Afro lyrics. As a selection of Blocos Afro I chose Ilê Ayiê, Cortejo Afro and Olodum, which are all well recognized and with a long tradition presenting themselves in Salvador. In total the analysis was made from 31942 words and/or 250 lyrics. A pilot was used to create a framework to select and identify expressions and language forms attested to be associated with the Afro-Brazilian identity. I relied on quantitative and qualitative approaches to the analyses. First, I categorized the expressions from the different lyrics by using a word cloud application which provides an overview of word frequency in a given corpus and can be used to underpin qualitative analyses. By using word cloud the frequency of words in the total corpus of 250 lyrics and particular lyrics was analyzed. Based on this analysis of the frequency of use of expression and language forms, I carried out a thematic analysis of the discourses and compared the themes to salient themes of negritude. The results show that the Afro-Brazilian identity in Salvador is thematically connected to the negritude movement and that the Afro-Blocos lyrics analyzed show identity work a strong ingroup perspective.
