"Hej på er alla ungdomar" : Lokala polismyndigheters språkanvändning i sociala medier / ”Hi all you youngsters” : Local police authorities’ use of language in social media

Nordeborn, Gustav January 2016 (has links)
The aim is to study how the Police build relations by publishing Facebook posts and how relation building is expressed in the form and content of the texts. More specifically, the study examines the picture that the writing police and the police authorities paint of their activities, and the effect that the posts can be envisaged to have on the receivers.   The material consists of four posts from two police authorities, Växjö/Alvesta and Kalmar. This is analysed with a method borrowed from systemic-functional linguistics (SFL) and close reading. The results are then interpreted on the basis of SFL and traditional stylistic theory.   The result shows that the Facebook posts bring both opportunities and risks in building relations. The studied posts consist mostly of declarative sentences, with only a small proportion of exhortations and offers. No questions occur at all. The posts display a large stylistic breadth and varied content from the spheres of police activity, such as combating violence and drunkenness or dealing with missing persons and property.   There seems to be a will among the Police to establish contact with the general public, toning down the image of a strict authority with a monopoly on violence, and the officers working for the authority appear as empathetic human beings. The conclusion is that the communication of the Police with the general public via Facebook is a balancing act between, on the one hand, seeming good-humoured and human, and on the other hand the risk of seeming less serious and authoritative. In texts with a serious content presented in a light-hearted form with ironic undertones, the Police risk undermining their own authority. Despite this, the Facebook posts from the Police can be said to be in line with the catchwords of their activity: engaged, efficient and accessible. The Police also try to adjust the style of the posts to what is generally found on Facebook.

»Jetzt muss jeder Patriot aktiv werden!« : Diskurslinguistische Analyse der strategischen politischen Kommunikation der Identitären Bewegung Österreich

Juopperi, Jesse January 2019 (has links)
This study aims to describe the strategic political communication of the Identitarian Movement in Austria (in German known as Identitäre Bewegung Österreich) and concentrates on identifying means of persuasive language on the homepage of the movement, which is known to be nationalistic and critical towards migration. The study is based on a corpus containing a selection of blog entries, as well as a sample of images published on the homepage, and is carried out using a qualitative method combining discourse linguistics, systemic-functional linguistics and multimodal theory. The analysis sets off by describing the field component of systemic-functional theory and proceeds to examining tenor and mode. The focus will be specifically on firstly, investigating a) discourse participants and the processes they engage in and b) interaction between the implied sender and recipient in the verbal material; and secondly, describing how these meanings are reproduced visually in the image sample used. The findings suggest that the movement not only strives to portray itself as powerful and authoritative but also relies on means of solidarity in order to convince the recipient of its message. More specifically, it is shown that the migrant participants are discriminated and depersonalised whilst a close synthetic relationship is established with the implied reader, i.e. the homepage visitor. Furthermore, the movement makes an effort to picture itself as a representative of numerous groups and interests in society. By doing so it apparently attempts to simulate a representative discourse, in order to present the xenophobic stance it agitates for as a majority opinion. The analysis shows also that these practices can be seen throughout the corpus, that is, in the verbal texts as well as in the imagery.

Språkutveckling i den samhällsorienterande undervisningen med andraspråkselever / Language development in socially oriented teaching with second language students

Bengtsson, Emilia January 2023 (has links)
The goal is to study language development by investigating how the sociocultural learning theory and the language theory SFL are prominent in primary school teachers' narratives about their teaching in the socially oriented subjects with second language students. In addition, I have investigated how multimodal media are used in SO teaching with second language students according to primary school teachers' narratives. My questions are the following: "How does the socio-cultural learning theory and the language theory SFL appear in the social orientation teaching with second language students based on the primary school teachers' narration?" and "How do primary school teachers describe the use of multimodal media within the social orientation teaching with second language students?". The study is based on Lev Vygotsky's sociocultural learning theory, Michael Halliday's systemic-functional language theory and theories of multimodality. The study is qualitative and the empirical data was collected via semi-structured interviews with five teachers from a high index school in Malmö. The result shows that a socio-cultural approach is preferable with second language students, where cooperative learning is highlighted as a successful learning method. Michael Halliday's theory (SFL) is favorable, which is based on starting from the students' prior knowledge in teaching. In addition, the results show that multimodal teaching is important for successful learning with second language learners. In the discussion, reasoning and conclusions are presented based on the results that answer the questions. Furthermore, the discussion part deals with how the research affects the future professional profession and how to do further research on the subject.
