Loss, Gain, and Chromosomes : Readability and Translation Shifts in Medical Information for Families of Children with 10q25/10q26 Deletions

The purpose of this thesis for the degree of Master, one year, is to investigate the translation of medical information from British English into Swedish. The analysis is concerned with readability and terminology. In specific, the areas of investigation are how readability of the material compares to other studies, what translation strategies or sources a translator may use, and what kind of translation shifts the terms analyzed undergo. The source text material consists of some six thousand words from a leaflet called 10q25 and 10q26 Deletions from Unique, a charity organization based in Great Britain, which welcomes families located worldwide as members. The theory in this thesis is based on previous research within the focus areas of readability, terminology, translation strategies, and translation shifts. Examples include Frege (1948 [1892]), Ogden and Richards (1923), Flesch(1948), McLaughlin (1969), Vinay and Darbelnet (1995), Deléger et al (2010), Kolahi andShirvani (2012), and Acar and İşisağ (2017). The text material does not fulfill the professional recommendations regarding readability, which confirms observations from previous studies. Overall, there is a tendency towards an improved readability level in the translation, which contradicts one bilingual study (Kolahi and Shirvani) but partially confirms another (Acar and İşisağ). Of the terms identified for analysis, 49.4 % have been found to require translation strategies sorting under oblique translation, where the predominant method is transposition. A significantly higher number of terms have been found in term banks and corpora than indicated in a previous study.

Spritt språngande : En terminologisk undersökning av språngning / They sprang far and wide : A terminological examination of sprang

The overarching theme of the thesis concerns the terminology aspect of searchability in digitalised archival data. The aim of the work is to analyse material from two archives (The Institute for Language and Folklore (ISOF) and The Nordic Museum) on the subject of sprang and the names of that technique during the 20th century in a Swedish rural setting. The questions posed to the material concern geographic occurrence, descriptions, confusions due to homonyms, and the origins of names. The theoretical foundation is based in relationships like ideology, gender, and power. The idea of nationalism through symbols like names is used to analyse the material. The method is archival research, based in the two archives and a small case-study of the names used for sprang objects in the database digitaltmuseum.se (containing several Swedish museum collections). Key words are used in the search and in total twenty-six hits are examined. The material is categorised in geographic position, names used, and whether it is sprang or not.  The study finds an occurrence of sprang in a rural context later in time, and further north in geography than the literature on the subject would suggest. The case study shows that some confusion in terminology exists between museums, and sometimes within the collection of a single museum. The study suggests that technical terms should be preferred by institutions rather than rural, folkloric, names.

In introductory programming courses it is important for students to learn key terminology to be ableto discuss code. The standard way to structure these courses is by working in pairs or individual work since problems may occur when working in groups, specifically that one person might be more active than the rest. This could be because of self-efficacy (SE), which contributes to how much time and energy an individual is willing to spend on an assignment. The goal of this study is to create a groupexercise that promotes discussions and use of programming terminology. It will also analyze if SE isaffecting how well the groups preform. Two different instructions were created for this assignment to examine which one is more effective. 54 students participated in this study at four occasions. Their SE was measured before and after the assignment with questionnaires. The results show that one of the instructions leads to more active discussions from the groups and that the other instruction leadsto more use of terminology when discussing code and that every participant was more equally active.The results also show that SE affect how equal the participation is within the groups and that groups with higher levels of SE perform better during the assignment than groups with low or medium SE.This type of activity shows a positive increase of SE for students that start of with low or medium SE. / I introduktionskurser för programmering är det viktigt att studenter lär sig programmeringstermer för att lättare kunna diskutera kod. De vanligaste strategierna för att lära ut programmering är i par eller individuellt då det uppstår problem med att en individ tar över när grupper blir för stora. Detta kan uppstå på grund av studenternas uppskattade egen förmåga (eng. self-efficacy) vilket är kopplat till hur benägen en individ är att lägga energi och engagemang på en uppgift. Denna studie har därför som mål att skapa en studentaktiv gruppuppgift som gynnar diskussion och användning av programmeringstermer, samt att analysera om self-efficacy (SE) påverkar hur väl grupperna presterar i uppgifterna.Två olika instruktioner testades för att se vilken av dessa som ger bäst resultat. 54 studenter som läser programmering på introduktionsnivå deltog i studien vid fyra tillfällen. Deras SE mättes före och efter uppgiften med hjälp av enkäter. Resultatet visar att en av instruktionerna leder till mer aktiva diskussioner och att den andre instruktionen leder till att ordet fördelas mer jämt samt att deltagarna oftare använder sig av programmeringstermer när de diskuterar kod. Resultatet visar även att SE påverkar hur jämnt ordet fördelas inom grupperna och att grupper med hög self-efficacy presterar bättre i aktiviteten än grupper med medel eller låg SE. Överlag visar studien att denna typ av gruppuppgiftger en positiv ökning av SE hos studenter som har låg eller medel SE.

Definition Extraction From Swedish Technical Documentation : Bridging the gap between industry and academy approaches

Terminology is concerned with the creation and maintenance of concept systems, terms and definitions. Automatic term and definition extraction is used to simplify this otherwise manual and sometimes tedious process. This thesis presents an integrated approach of pattern matching and machine learning, utilising feature vectors in which each feature is a Boolean function of a regular expression. The integrated approach is compared with the two more classic approaches, showing a significant increase in recall while maintaining a comparable precision score. Less promising is the negative correlation between the performance of the integrated approach and training size. Further research is suggested.

INLEDNING Vårdplaneringar kräver ett entydigt och nyanserat språk för att identifiera patienternas förmåga och insatsbehov gällande aktiviteter i det dagliga livet (ADL). Studiens utgångspunkt är KASAM, människans behov av sammanhang, begriplighet, hanterbarhet och meningsfullhet i sitt dagliga liv. SYFTE Att belysa och validera ADL-terminologin inom sjukvård och rehabilitering. METOD Uppsatsen är en kvalitativ och kvantitativ studie med en deduktiv ansats. ADL-verktyget Rainbow användes som mall. Materialet har insamlats genom enkäter och fokusgruppsintervjuer. Biståndshandläggare och arbetsterapeuter har intervjuats. Studien beskriver även hur en grupp seniorer, utan relation till eller erfarenhet av vård eller vårdplanering, tolkade terminologin och synonymerna. Intervjuerna behandlade följande teman: ADL-terminologi, synonymer, uppfattningar samt kategorisering utifrån en hierarkisk ordning. RESULTAT Nuvarande terminologi och tillvägagångssätt kan innebära att patienterna och deras anhöriga upplever otrygghet angående teamets planerade insatser. Studiens resultat visar att sjukvårdens team och patienter kan dela och använda ett gemensamt språk. SLUTSATS Språket är nyckeln till att förstå sammanhang. KASAM som ledstjärna i språket skapar en värdegrund för vad som har överenskommits och kvalitetssäkrar patienternas vård- och rehabiliteringsinsatser. / INTRODUCTION Healthcare planning require an unambiguous and varied language to identify patient´s ability and effort needs regarding activities of daily living (ADL). The study's starting point is KASAM, the human need for coherence, comprehensibility, manageability and meaningfulness in their daily lives. AIM To highlight and validate ADL terminology of medical care and rehabilitation. METHODOLOGY The thesis is a combined, descriptive study with a deductive approach. ADL Rainbow tool was used as a template. The material was collected through questionnaires and focus group interviews. Care managers and occupational therapists were interviewed. The study also describes how a group of seniors, without relation to or experience of care or care planning, interpreted the terminology and synonyms. The interviews covered the following themes: ADL terminology, synonyms, views and categorization based on a hierarchical order. RESULTS Current terminology and approach could mean that the patients and their relatives could feel insecure regarding the team's planned interventions. The study results show that the medical team and patients can share and use a common language. CONCLUSION Language is the key to understanding the context. KASAM as a guiding-star in language, creates a value base for what has been agreed and ensures quality assures patient´s care and rehabilitation efforts.
