Ambivalent encounters : A feminist exploration of human and feminised AI humanoid relations

Sigurdardottir, Sara Margret January 2022 (has links)
Machines encoded with artificial intelligence (AI) are increasingly having influence in human social realms. Rapid technological advances have propelled encounters between humans and embodied AI humanoids from a subject of science fiction to a real-world phenomenon. Thus, their embodiments are socially and culturally significant and pertinent for feminist investigation. In this thesis, I employ reflexive thematic analysis and a feminist theoretical perspective focused on affect and emotion to examine human and machine relationships in the context of gender, power, and society. The topic is explored using three different case studies that all focus on interactions between humans and feminised AI humanoids. The analysis shows that gender is a crucial factor in the humanisation of the AI embodiment. By playing on the idea that machines transcend their machinic status through designated purposes, creators appeal to ambivalence in human and machine encounters. As interactive AI and social robots continue to integrate into human social contexts, it is important to consider the underlying structures and social implications of their production and representation.

Věra a Vladimír Janouškovi. Zamyšlení nad manželskými uměleckými páry / Věra a Vladimír Janouškovi. Reflection on artist couples

Váňová, Martina January 2015 (has links)
Bibliografická citace Věra a Vladimír Janouškovi. Zamyšlení nad manželskými uměleckými páry. [rukopis] : diplomová práce / Martina Váňová; vedoucí práce: PhDr. Milan Pech, Ph.D. Praha, 2015. 132 s. Abstract In the generation of Czech artists born between 1920 - 1935 occurs a particular phenomenon - artist couples. After the Second World War there was a surprisingly high number of artists contracting a life-long partnerships. This generation influenced primarily the Czech art scene in the 1960's. Most of these marriages lasted even in the upcoming difficult times and became a great support in the era of so called normalization in 1970's and 1980's. The goal of the thesis is to observe the work of art of two prominent Czech artists - Věra Janoušková and Vladimír Janoušek - within the context of their marital life. It will focus on the extent of their mutual impact on each other and it will deal with the possibilities of autonomy of the work developed alongside the artist-partner. The diploma thesis will show their work in the times of their marital life and even after partner's death. Keywords Věra a Vladimír Janouškovi, Czech scupture, artist couples, independence, influence

Activating Artistry: Community Engagement Resources and Teaching Artist Strategies for the Bassoonist

Spring, Staci 05 1900 (has links)
This document examines current practices and opportunities in the music performance field related to artistic citizenship, community engagement, and the field of teaching artistry. The relationship of musicians to their audiences and communities has shifted significantly in the twenty-first century, and there is an increasing need to redefine the essential skills of the professional musician. Derived from the field of teaching artistry, the concept of "activating artistry" suggests that our greatest strength and power as artists lies in drawing out individual artistic expression in other people, and it is with this power that artists as a workforce can create meaningful change in society. This intention could be manifested in many different contexts during the course of a given music career, however, developing the tool kit necessary for engaging in such work is not widely emphasized in the training of musicians. What tools can be provided for students and professionals to help them navigate both traditional and evolving career paths in music? How are bassoonists doing as a field in addressing the imperative of community engagement and artistic citizenship? How might we explore more collaborative ways to engage with our diverse communities – ways that value their perspectives? These questions guide an exploration of current practices in the bassoon field, with an overall goal of providing practical examples, resources, and inspiration for engaging in the work of activating artistry. Central to the discussion is the intersection of the professional bassoonist with the teaching artist field. Examples of lesson plans/strategies and ideas for curating educational performances demonstrate potential uses of the bassoon and its repertoire in teaching artist residencies and other community engagement settings.

Expertskattens tillämpning i ishockeysverige

Malm, Christoffer, Johansson, Daniel January 2018 (has links)
AimThe aim with this study is to firstly describe what types of taxes and benefits there are that import players can take advantage of when coming to Sweden to play ice hockey. Furthermore, the study is also aiming to clarify the effects that the application of expert tax has on the ice hockey in Sweden. The questions that we are going to answer are:What tax benefits allows within the Inkomstskattelagen (IL) for import players and to what extension have the Swedish ice hockey clubs been able to benefit from the expert tax when it comes to contract import players to Sweden? What advantages and disadvantages has the application of tax reductions of import players in Sweden resulted in for the Swedish ice hockey organizations?MethodWe have used two different types of methods for this study. First of all, we used a qualitative method when it came to interviews and the empirical study of previously written studies and books that were relevant for this study. The second method is the method of law that we have used when it comes to studying and understanding the many layers of the different laws. We have also included a few legal cases that we find highly interesting for the outcome of this study. Analysis and discussionThe benefits that came when the expert tax entered the Swedish market were really a game changer. From 2012 and forward an import player could come to Sweden and play ice hockey with a tax reduction that Swedish players weren’t allowed to use. The expert tax that came in 2012, was now open for more than just scientists that the law was from the beginning created for. Professional athletes were one of the groups of people that could use it, and not only did the player themselves earn money by using this reduction. The team that hired the players was also allowed to benefit from the tax reduction. The conclusion of this is that more import players now comes to Sweden for a reduced tax benefit. This leads to many more import players that are aiming to come to Sweden and that in return leads to the SHL now becoming even more powerful and attractive in the market of ice hockey.

An artist book as an essay and an object

Norrman, Peter January 2019 (has links)
I am using the essay as a vehicle to make an artist book. The essay functions on several levels: As my master essay text. As an artist book and stand alone object. As a way to distill my artistic production during my time at Konstfack into a new work. It is my attempt at creating both textworks and photobased elements that together seek to create a probe into the printed publication as another a form of montagéd cinema.

Working in an Artist Collective in Portland Oregon: The artistic benefits of cooperation and place in an underground art world

Borders, Elizabeth Furlong 01 January 2011 (has links)
This ethnography explores the underground art world in Portland, Oregon by showing how a Portland area artist collective, Oregon Painting Society, navigates their art world. Participant observation, in-depth interviews, and a short latent content analysis triangulate data to show the features and values of the underground art world. Using Becker's concept of art worlds, I show how artists working outside of a traditional art career in a commercial gallery system do their work by exploring how Portland's art world is structured and sustained. I find that group work, cooperation, and resource sharing in a vibrant neighborhood based social network enables artists to substitute resources usually provided by gallery representation and sustain their ability to make artwork without financial support. This is a network that rejects the competitive structure of the commercial system and runs more smoothly the more artists participate in it. I also explore the reasons for Portland's particular ability to support this kind of environment, citing geographic proximity to other art cities, DIY cultural roots, neighborhood structure, affordable city amenities, and a creative class population.

Växjö Stad, Golvbrunnen Med Smak : Ett arbete om Växjös populärmusik och dess nätverksbildningar under 1980-/90- och tidiga 2020-talet / Växjö City, The Floordrain With Taste : An essay about Växjö's popular music and its network formations during the 1980-/90s and early 2020s.

Vahlgren, Olle January 2022 (has links)
This essay is about the musical life in the city of Växjö. Växjö is a rather small city that, during the last 50 years, has had a fantastic musical culture with bands such as AC/DC, Sex Pistols and Boney M playing there to name a few. With popular nightclubs and an exciting underground movement Växjö has served as one the most popular cities when it comes to music in the south of Sweden during the 1980s, 90s and early 2000s. This despite only having around 95000 citizens as of the year 2021. The essay uncovers the inner workings of the musical life and its network during the 1980s and 90s by the help of 13 people which have been interviewed. The people in question have either been active or prominent in connection to the musical life locally, mainly through the 1980s and 90s but also today, in the early 2020s. The interviews show that the musical life in Växjö has been complex. With a bunch of passionate individuals, nightclubs and underground stages people have changed the local culture and produced some successful bands such as The Ark or Melody Club. At the same time the city’s musical life is not as rich as it used to be before 2021. With the revolution of the internet we can see how it has become more expensive to arrange concerts and why it is more difficult than ever to develop a culturally significant musical life locally.

Archives in the age of transformation of art institutions: an art preservation strategy or a curatorial experiment?

Kupková, Marika, Szűcsová, Monika 10 July 2023 (has links)
This paper presents the development of the curatorial research project Black Box, which was established in the spring of 2020 in the Brno TIC Gallery to support contemporary art and artists at a time when artists and cultural institutions were affected by the existential crisis caused by the COVID-19 global pandemic. This experimental archive, which initially appeared to be temporary, has been developing its activities for a second year in a row. This text aims to provide a report on the ongoing remakes and postproductions of this archive and present various curatorial interventions carried out on the archived works of the participating artists. We observe a shift of exhibition institutions towards community centres with a diversified program, raising their social awareness and critical self-reflection, and building new means of communication on the axis of the artist-spectator. Especially in the latter area, creating and enabling access to an art archive is an essential tool.
