The effects of toy exposure on children's prosocial and antisocial behavior

Snyder, Tara D. 12 September 2009 (has links)
The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between exposure to prosocial and antisocial toys and the subsequent effects on children's short-term prosocial and antisocial behavior. The behaviors examined were physical antisocial behavior, verbal antisocial behavior, physical prosocial behavior, and verbal prosocial behavior. The dependent measures for these behaviors were constructed based upon Turner and Goldsmith's (1976) measures for antisocial behavior, Potts, Huston, and Wright's (1986) measures for prosocial behavior, and Radke- Yarrow, Zahn-Waxler, and Chapman's (1983) description of prosocial behavior. The theoretical basis for this study lies in the social learning theories offered by Bandura (1977) and Berkowitz (1974). Multivariate Analyses of Variance and Wilcoxon's Signed-rank tests were used to test the hypotheses. Main effects were found for toy condition and for gender. The antisocial toy condition yielded the highest rates of antisocial behavior. The prosocial toy condition yielded the highest rates of prosocial behavior. The girls' behaviors tended to be of a verbal nature, and the boy's behaviors tended to be of a physical nature. / Master of Science

The doctorate thesis entitled “Childhood, a player subject and ludic practices in Brazil during the 19th century” approaches questions related to the child in his/her ludic universe. This document is in search of discussing this universe as a privileged space of social relationships and the place where the child, as a player subject, produces culture and as a consequence of this process he/she actively participates in the general culture. In doing so, I am looking forward to discussing and to demystifying the idea of a child as an individual to be modeled, as a reflex of the adult's world, because it is in the day by day that the child interferes in the world and builds his/her own one. To achieve this, we have worked with a specialized bibliography about childhood, ludicity and memory, besides the theoretical-methodological outline of the history. The sources were identified, collected and worked at files, museums and libraries in Brazil and in Europe, besides the use of the iconography and of the travelers' literature that were in Brazil during the studied period. It was possible to map the production circuit, distribution and sale of the toys in several spaces in the society, besides evidencing that the child plays and in doing so he/she subverts the established order, creates new objects and gives life to other ones. Finally, the child is part of the history and is the actor and the object of his/her own existence in the Brazil of the 19th century.

Utveckling av displayställ för kreativa leksaker / Development of display stand for creative toys

Phalén, Kajsa, Lövgren Berg, Emelie January 2016 (has links)
During spring 2016, the engineering students Kajsa Phalén and Emelie Lövgren Berg, at the University of Skövde, developed a product in cooperation with the toy company Strawbees. The company wants to sell their creative toys in stores and therefore wants to develop a sales display stand that will carry the products. A basic feasibility study has been done to define a target group of customers and other stakeholders. The feasibility study also covers marketing strategies in shops and studies were carried out to increase understanding of the target group needs. Market analysis of competitors gave inspiration from existing solutions of the problem and a collage over color codes and idioms gave the result the feeling that the company wants to convey. The number of products that the display stand would wear was a major focus in the beginning of the concept generation. Combinations of how the products can be placed laid the foundation for the design of the display stand. Through analysis of how competitors solved the visual design for the display stand some visual themes were created. The developed designs together with visual themes and the feeling that the company wants to convey created various concepts. The new concepts were analyzed for how they would fit into its natural environment, a toy store. Because of some shortcomings the number of concept could be limited to only two, who later became prototypes. These prototypes were tested in real size together with the products that the display stand would accommodate. A concept could then be determined and developed in detail as to the best way to reach up to the demands and wishes of the company.

Bernström, Annelie January 2007 (has links)

Nyckelord: genus, leksaker, preferenser, teknik
/
Through interviews with children in preschool class and through inquiries by questionnaire with their teachers, I have received answers of my question at issue about boys, girls and their choices of technical toys. The purpose was to see if there were any differences in choosing and using these toys, and also to find out if and why the children have different preferences.

The results indicate that for the children in this preschool class the choice of construction toys is common in the activities. All the children play with these toys, but still there are different preferences among girls and boys, both at home and in preschool class. There are differences in opinion among earlier researchers what causes boys and girls to differ in preferences of toys, but the main theory is still that gender differences depend on the family and the community.

Pedagogical conclusions are that as a teacher of young children, you have to work with awareness when it comes to toys and gender. You must never forget the important role toys play in the development of the children.

Keywords: gender, technical, toys, preferences
