“It's not about the numbers, it's about the process” Working Methods and Tools for Homeless Youth in Eugene, Oregon

Mohamud, Luul, Patterson, Amanda January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this study was to explore what working methods and tools service providers use to engage with and support homeless youth in Eugene, Oregon. The authors considered a qualitative research method with semi-structured interviews as the most appropriate way to collect data. A total of five participants took part in this study, all of which are service providers in the United States, specifically in Eugene, Oregon (OR) and work directly with homeless youth. The empirical findings were analyzed through the ecological systems theory perspective in order to properly explore the effects different systems have on working methods and tools. The data collected in this study was divided into three themes: Engaging and Supportive Tools, Barriers & Supportive Factors and desired changes by service providers. These themes properly highlight the most common and vital information collected from the participants in this study. The findings indicate trust building as an essential method and tool with any service provider attempting to engage with and support homeless youth. It was also discovered that funding was the biggest barrier that service providers faced when exploring working methods and tools used to engage with and support homeless youth.

Arnaout, Elinor, Johansson, Julia January 2021 (has links)
Abstract    Title        School counsellors work with children and youths who are exposed to honor-related violence and oppression, in relation to the Convention on the Rights of the Child- A qualitative study.   Authors          Elinor Arnaout and Julia Johansson   Honor-related violence and oppression (HrvaO) is a phenomenon that has received increasing attention in the media, among others. This is especially so after the case of Fadime, who in 2002 was murdered by his father as a result of violating his family's code of honor. The starting point in HrvaO is that women's sexuality is something that must be controlled in order to preserve the family's honor (Länsstyrelsen, 2018). In an interview study, the aim was to investigate what tools and knowledge school counsellors perceive they have to work with HrvaO among high school students. Furthermore, the purpose was to investigate how the parties identify the vulnerability among the students. In addition, the authors have examined how the school counsellors work with HrvaO mainly in relation to the Convention on the Rights of the Child. It imposes requirements on all relevant professionals, including counsellors, taking into account the best interests of the child in all decisions taken with a view to protecting the child. Consequently, it was of interest to examine whether school counselors’ work with HrvaO has changed since the Convention on the Rights of the Child became law in Sweden in 2020.   The results of the study have shown that the Convention on the Rights of the Child has not made it easier for the counsellors, which they explain is due to the fact that the Convention on the Rights of the Child does not provide any practical application in the work with vulnerable students. Furthermore, the study has shown that the school counsellors have tools for working with students who are exposed to HrvaO in the form of conversation methodology, contact with social services, honor-groups and relationship building. The conclusion is that HrvaO is a complex subject that needs to be researched to a greater extent in order to promote the professional's acquisition of knowledge. This is especially apparent when various dilemmas arise in the workplace where the professional experiences difficulties in prioritizing "the right solution". Keywords  Honor-related violence and oppression, school counsellors, Convention on the rights of the child, work methods.

Towards a more reflexive research aware practice: The influence and potential of professional and team culture.

Lawler, John A., Bilson, A. January 2004 (has links)
No / This article reflects on the debates about Evidence Based Practice and suggests a new approach to implementing a more reflexive and research aware social work practice in professional teams. We show that there has been a substantial focus on the responsibility of individual professionals for using best evidence to guide their practice and on the organisation to provide an environment and policies suited to EBP. We argue that there is a need to balance this by an increased focus on the professional and team culture in which social work takes place. We draw on the literature on organisational change and social work research to suggest a new direction for encouraging greater reflexivity and developing a more open participative approach to the use of evidence to shape new practices in social work at the local level.

Facey, Nadja, Mattsson, Lisa January 2014 (has links)
Research shows that language is important when it comes to healthcare. This study aims to investigate how caregivers in home care handle and understand language difficulties with older immigrants who don’t speak Swedish. To answer the question qualitative, semi-structured interviews were conducted with six health workers in home care. The result shows that language difficulties are common but not always need to be a problem. To deal with the different languages following were used; sign language, body language, eye contact and touch. Detailed visit plans, contact persons and continuity were used as tools to prevent misunderstandings and to facilitate communication. There was a difference of opinion whether the older immigrants were alone and isolated. The staff felt that the older experienced language difficulties hard, that they were sad, angry and felt hopelessness. Four interview persons thought that the establishment of good relations were not affected by language difficulties. Assumptions were not used to facilitate language difficulties since they treated everyone individually. Accommodating, trustworthy, good sense and kindness were words that were associated with positive reception.

Processeffektivisering av kantpressar / Streamlining of a press brake operation

Loodin-Ek, Hanna, Schalin, Rebecka January 2018 (has links)
The report studies the process by the press brakes at Systemair Sweden AB in the county of Skinnskatteberg. Systemair Sweden AB is a company that produce air curtains, residential ventilation, air conditioning devices and is leading within its own market of products. Systemair Sweden AB consider the press brake process to be inefficient which result in unwanted and long set up time. The intention of the report was to find the relations between products that are being processed in the press brake and thereafter sort each individual product stream by similarities in the equipment being used to reduce the set-up time. The approach of the report is of analyzing character and has a PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Act) framework where a few questions are enunciated in the beginning of the report and discussed throughout the report. The report initiates in a thorough status analysis where tools within the theory of Lean is identified and used to handle the mentioned problem. Examples of tools being used is a production map, production flow and production families. The methods are adapted for this problem and report which resulted in a classification in equipment. A percental division was established by the classification which sourced new defined production flows and are presented in the report. The project group has focused on products produced with standard equipment in the two most used press types and a few products being processed by other equipment. To reduce the press brakes long set-up times a SMED analysis (Single-digit Minute Exchange of Die) has been implemented and a clock study. The longest set-up time in this study was in 43 minutes which the project group think can be reduced till 16 minutes by classifying equipment. According to SMED, a set-up time under 10 minutes is achievable, which is not the case here which indicated that there are more factors having to be in consideration. Therefore an Ishikawa (analysis of causes) was made in order to acknowledge these factors and recommendations was given to continue the work whereof one recommendation was standardized work methods. In the final of the report three suggestions are presented to streamline the press-brake process, all formed through classification of equipment, and lastly the questions from the beginning are answered.

Språkutvecklande arbetssätt i matematik för flerspråkiga elever - enligt lärare

Klangegård, Sophia, Sjölin, Petra January 2020 (has links)
Today's society is multicultural which means that also our classrooms are multicultural. The teaching must then be designed so that all pupils can develop as far as possible, which is expressed in the curriculum. The purpose of this study is therefore to investigate how Swedish teachers work with language development in the mathematics subject, to support these multilingual students’ knowledge development to the maximum. This study has a qualitative approach as it is based on semi-structured interviews. A total of four teachers participated and were thus able to give their picture of how they work with language development in mathematics. The results of the study indicate a large divergence between the teachers' ways of working, relating to multilingual classrooms, and language development work. In addition, some aspects are more crucial to the development of languages and knowledge for multilingual students. This includes collaborative work where language has a central role in which students get to talk, reason, and communicate mathematics with others. Other key strategies that emerge are reality anchoring, customized tasks, and multilingualism as a resource. The work is analyzed in relation to theories of socio-cultural learning and pragmatism.
