Simply Wood : The Kinship of Care

Okruhlicová, Naďa January 2020 (has links)
Simply Wood is a collaborative inquiry into the topic of all wood joints for industrially produced furniture through engineering and the culture of care for and with furniture through Design+Change. This thesis is written in collaboration with the product development and communication wings from IKEA of Sweden, as the external tutors and supervisors. The design part, called the Kinship of Care, focuses on the culture of care between IKEA’s fast furniture and its user. This research, Kinship of care, consists of slow design principles reveal, expand, and reflect that serve as a cyclic timeline through the design process. Reader, the new caregiver is at the beginning introduced into the field of Slow Design and what does it mean to be the agent of change in today’s world. As the thesis unfolds, the section Reveal expresses challenges IKEA is facing when it comes to the culture of care. These challenges serve as a foundation from which this thesis builds its shape. The notion of care is highly abundant in meanings, and the understanding of furniture is quite narrow and static. The sectionReveal reframes the idea of care in collaboration with other caregivers in the form of a Caregiver manifesto for Living in Times of Social Distancing. The notion of furniture is revalued during an intervention walk Beyond Furniture that reveals hidden connections to furniture in the forest. Once the concepts of furniture and care are reframed, they are brought together and reimagined in the next section Expand. Expand uses tools of bisociation to combine seemingly unrelated notions together. All this information is transformed in conclusion into seeds for caring with furniture that serves as carative guidelines, guidelines that motivate caregiving behaviour in one’s household, and guidelines for imagining caring furniture. In the last section Reflect, the reader contemplates the life of furniture and learns to let go for sustainable disposal practices through the Love and the Breakup letters. This section also contains an interview with a caregiving practitioner, a furniture upholsterer. In conclusion, seeds for caring with furniture are introduced in the form of a moving zine. This thesis, Simply Wood, encourages the reader, fast-furniture user, and fast-furniture producer, to become a slow caregiver in this fast-changing society and offers tools for re-conceptualizing rooted notions of care and furniture.

Subkultury a média na příkladu larp / Social network Common sing: subcultures and media

Bártová, Dominika January 2015 (has links)
In the course of 20th century, various subcultures became important part of our society. They were formed by mutual belief and shared interest in values often dissonant to those of majority. This paper describes larp community, fellowship that creates and organizes theatre- like role playing sessions. Live action role playing is about establishing new fictional worlds and retrieting legendary tales with main focus on joy experienced during the game. A radio documentary "Fenomen larp" (i.e. Phenomenon LARP) complementing this paper provides detailed insight. Main goal of the work is to put together the overview of the means of communication within larp community with accent on zines, webzines and Facebook. It also describes the way mainstream media covers the topic and what is the public opinion towards larp together with content analysis of texts published in "Pevnost" (i.e. Citadel) magazine. In appendix there are photographs from documentary shooting, interview with Helena Jiskrova (creator of Common sign social network) and overview of media outputs on larp in Czech Republic during 2014.

Fanzine is commonly associated with an alternative publication without commercial value and usually amateur production nature and, because of these qualities, can be developed easily in school. The goal is to show that working with fanzines allows students to take their role as subjects in the process of understanding and building values; pointing out that working with fanzines, and their meanings from its form and content, are extremely personal and graphic objects lend themselves to communicate in an original and authentic way; demonstrate that graphic design is a powerful tool for communication and knowledge can help people to have more say in a collective experimentation space.

Mirror Landscapes : A journey to sustainable well-being / Mirror Landscapes : A journey to sustainable well-being

Dinh, Thuong January 2023 (has links)
This project is a journey of finding sustainable well-being through re-creating beauty stan-dards and generating changes that support a sustainable lifestyle. The starting point of the project is to support women’s well-being while patriarchal capitalist society diminishes their self-worth to make them consume. However, not only women but everyone is affected by beauty standards from society. By applying different design methods, the aim is to sustain an individual’s mental and physical well-being by reducing the pressure while navigating the demands of society through investigating the problems and finding ways to stay with the problem.

Urban Uncertainties

Harold, Josephine January 2022 (has links)
Throughout the last decades the linear urban development in Stockholm can be retraced to the idea of supply and demand, society’s view on the elimination of risk, while increasingly detaching from natural processes. This thesis offers a critical evaluation of the socio-economic situation of space production, while trying to argue for a new semantic recodification of urban organisational processes while reconnecting to a socio-biodiverse narrative. Through the research, the defining parameters and actors of space production and urban planning are examined on their participational, circular and inclusive potential. Motivated by the need to renegotiate the current narrative of architecture, the site of exploration is Bergs Hamn in Nacka, an industrial oil cistern park built in the 50s. The project aspires to find new ways of thinking and communicating architecture within and outside of the academic field through architectural and theoretical actions and interactions, writing and dreaming about space as a fluid and changeable matter.

Athènes, ville matérielle et imaginaire : le marbre, le béton et le bigaradier comme pivots tactiques pour la création d’un zine engagé

Vekhoff, Lara 12 1900 (has links)
If Athens holds a special place in the Western imagination because of its prestigious past, the modern capital has recently been associated with an unprecedented social and economic crisis, with harmful austerity measures and with struggles. The city occupies a key place in the study of cultures and societies because it concentrates many economic, social and material matters. These matters are embedded in urban imaginaries that are central to important negotiations with the past and future projections. While urban phenomena are often the subject to systematic studies and planning, this research aims to reveal paradoxical imaginaries that are embedded in both the space and history of the city. It stands at the crossroads of material culture studies and media studies to approach the imaginary by focusing on the materials that make it up. Concrete, marble, and sour orange trees are both mediators of these imaginations and vehicles for informal interventions in the city. The methods of flânerie, collage and zine are all chosen for their tactical dimension (De Certeau, 1990), i.e., as an alternative to hegemonic methods and shapes. The research-creation approach emphasizes praxis in a perspective of reappropriating the city. The collection of materials is inspired by strolls through the city and various sources to arrive at a non-exhaustive assemblage of philosophical, poetic, historical, and personal texts and images. This material is gathered using the techniques and logic of collage to present it in the form of a zine. The concrete, marble and sour orange tree trigger reflections in the construction of a cultural identity and release broader notions such as power relations, the relationship to nature, to knowledge, to the common and to otherness.

A Pedagogy of Holistic Media Literacy: Reflections on Culture Jamming as Transformative Learning and Healing

Stasko, Carly 14 December 2009 (has links)
This qualitative study uses narrative inquiry (Connelly & Clandinin, 1988, 1990, 2001) and self-study to investigate ways to further understand and facilitate the integration of holistic philosophies of education with media literacy pedagogies. As founder and director of the Youth Media Literacy Project and a self-titled Imagitator (one who agitates imagination), I have spent over 10 years teaching media literacy in various high schools, universities, and community centres across North America. This study will focus on my own personal practical knowledge (Connelly & Clandinin, 1982) as a culture jammer, educator and cancer survivor to illustrate my original vision of a ‘holistic media literacy pedagogy’. This research reflects on the emergence and impact of holistic media literacy in my personal and professional life and also draws from relevant interdisciplinary literature to challenge and synthesize current insights and theories of media literacy, holistic education and culture jamming.
