Business Intelligence em redes hoteleiras no Brasil / Business Intelligence in hotel chains in Brazil

Mariana Consoni Rubio 30 March 2016 (has links)
In a time when the production of knowledge is increasingly required for the continued expansion and diversification of lodging facilities, it is interesting to investigate the newly created Intelligence field of Business or Business Intelligence (BI). In hospitality, technology and information systems are used in various fields such as management, pricing, scheduling and operation of strategic information systems to facilitate analysis of key industry performance indicators. The concern revolves around the vast amount of information produced and it is essential to dispose of greater accuracy in decision-making processes. In this context, is proposing a study focusing on the theme Innovation in hotel management in Brazil, with the overall objective to analyse the management of the business intelligence of the chains operating in Brazil. It is a qualitative research, based on literature review and application of questionnaires with the managers of the chains, and thus can map the needs of hotel chains regarding management when evaluating BI practices. As a result, the primary existing BI software in the Brazilian market was identified (Cognos, MicroStrategy, SAS, Business Objects, Oracle Business Intelligence, QlikView, and Pentaho) and the most suitable for every size company. Also, the solutions identified were used for the management of BI information across networks: use of BI software, outsourcing through consultancy and manual data processing systems of the hotel services. Finally, it was evaluated the BI management achievements in the nets, concluding that the BI management implementation - considering the information management linked to IT - bring more benefits than costs to the analysed chains, particularly about providing a more positive decision making

Discovering credible events in near real time from social media streams

Buntain, Cody 26 January 2017 (has links)

Recent reliance on social media platforms as major sources of news and information, both for journalists and the larger population and especially during times of crisis, motivate the need for better methods of identifying and tracking high-impact events in these social media streams. Social media's volume, velocity, and democratization of information (leading to limited quality controls) complicate rapid discovery of these events and one's ability to trust the content posted about these events. This dissertation addresses these complications in four stages, using Twitter as a model social platform. The first stage analyzes Twitter's response to major crises, specifically terrorist attacks in Western countries, showing these high-impact events do not significantly impact message or user volume. Instead, these events drive changes in Twitter's topic distribution, with conversation, retweets, and hashtags relevant to these events experiencing significant, rapid, and short-lived bursts in frequency. Furthermore, conversation participants tend to prefer information from local authorities/organizations/media over national or international sources, with accounts for local police or local newspapers often emerging as central in the networks of interaction. Building on these results, the second stage in this dissertation presents and evaluates a set of features that capture these topical bursts associated with crises by modeling bursts in frequency for individual tokens in the Twitter stream. The resulting streaming algorithm is capable of discovering notable moments across a series of major sports competitions using Twitter's public stream without relying on domain- or language-specific information or models. Furthermore, results demonstrate models trained on sporting competition data perform well when transferred to earthquake identification. This streaming algorithm is then extended in this dissertation's third stage to support real-time event tracking and summarization. This real-time algorithm leverages new distributed processing technology to operate at scale and is evaluated against a collection of other community-developed information retrieval systems, where it performs comparably. Further experiments also show this real-time burst detection algorithm can be integrated with these other information retrieval systems to increase overall performance. The final stage then investigates automated methods for evaluating credibility in social media streams by leveraging two existing data sets. These two data sets measure different types of credibility (veracity versus perception), and results show veracity is negatively correlated with the amount of disagreement in and length of a conversation, and perceptions of credibility are influenced by the amount of links to other pages, shared media about the event, and the number of verified users participating in the discussion. Contributions made across these four stages are then usable in the relatively new fields of computational journalism and crisis informatics, which seek to improve news gathering and crisis response by leveraging new technologies and data sources like machine learning and social media.

Evolving effective micro behaviors for real-time strategy games

Liu, Siming 16 July 2015 (has links)

Real-Time Strategy games have become a new frontier of artificial intelligence research. Advances in real-time strategy game AI, like with chess and checkers before, will significantly advance the state of the art in AI research. This thesis aims to investigate using heuristic search algorithms to generate effective micro behaviors in combat scenarios for real-time strategy games. Macro and micro management are two key aspects of real-time strategy games. While good macro helps a player collect more resources and build more units, good micro helps a player win skirmishes against equal numbers of opponent units or win even when outnumbered. In this research, we use influence maps and potential fields as a basis representation to evolve micro behaviors. We first compare genetic algorithms against two types of hill climbers for generating competitive unit micro management. Second, we investigated the use of case-injected genetic algorithms to quickly and reliably generate high quality micro behaviors. Then we compactly encoded micro behaviors including influence maps, potential fields, and reactive control into fourteen parameters and used genetic algorithms to search for a complete micro bot, ECSLBot. We compare the performance of our ECSLBot with two state of the art bots, UAlbertaBot and Nova, on several skirmish scenarios in a popular real-time strategy game StarCraft. The results show that the ECSLBot tuned by genetic algorithms outperforms UAlbertaBot and Nova in kiting efficiency, target selection, and fleeing. In addition, the same approach works to create competitive micro behaviors in another game SeaCraft. Using parallelized genetic algorithms to evolve parameters in SeaCraft we are able to speed up the evolutionary process from twenty one hours to nine minutes. We believe this work provides evidence that genetic algorithms and our representation may be a viable approach to creating effective micro behaviors for winning skirmishes in real-time strategy games.

Bizotto, Beatriz Lucia Salvador 22 December 2017 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior, CAPES / The search for Competitive Advantage has become fundamental to the survival and prominence of organizations. Thus the objective of this thesis was to analyze the relationship between Competitive Priorities, Product and Process Innovation in the creation of Competitive Advantage in the grape and wine production chain. Initially a bibliometric survey was carried out, which confirmed that the joint analysis of these theoretical constructs is still little explored, especially when dealing with agribusiness productive chains. The method of research was quantitative followed by qualitative. The quantitative research was carried out in the region of Serra Gaúcha, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. We interviewed 196 actors from the grape and wine production chain. The qualitative research was carried out in the region of Bairrada, Aveiro, Portugal with 6 actors from the grape and wine production chain. For the analysis, the Structural Equation Modeling technique was used. The results indicated that there is a positive and significant relationship between the Competitive Priorities, Innovation and Competitive Advantage. All hypotheses were confirmed with significance level of 5%. After the results obtained in quantitative and qualitative research, the Competitive Priorities were ordered according to the perception of the interviewees in both quantitative and qualitative research. Based on the ordering of the Competitive Priorities, cost reduction as the most important Competitive Priority, for the productive chain of the grape and wine of the Serra Gaúcha, Brazil, in the creation of competitive advantage and to the Bairrada region, Aveiro, Portugal, took second place. For the region of Bairrada, Aveiro, Portugal the most important Competitive Priority was the quality. Delivery and flexibility were priorities with the same classification both for the region of the Serra Gaúcha, Brazil as to the Bairrada region, Aveiro, Portugal. Thus, from the theoretical model proposed and empirically tested that is a contribution of this thesis, because it allows a better understanding about the relation of the Competitive Priorities to the grape and wine production chain. It can be observed that, in this context, Competitive Priorities can be considered as precursors or facilitators for innovation, thus helping grape and wine chain actors to make decisions. It may also make possible the redirection of investment strategies and actions in order to maximize the economic profits of the grape and wine chain, both in Brazil and in Portugal.

Seriam esses comportamentos inerentes à prática do esporte? / In competitive sport, the pursuit of victory seems to require athletes a degree of "immorality." Intentional simulations and fouls, as well as provocations and even aggressions are not exactly rare in collective sports; in individual sports, doping is a well-known example. Are these behaviors inherent in the practice of sports? Recent studies show, on the other hand, that such behaviors depend on a certain nullification or blockage of the empathic mechanisms in our brain. It seems that a "will to win" requires less empathy than morality requires. However, empathic feelings are fundamental conditions for appropriate moral behavior. On the other hand, for the competition to happen it is necessary that a will to win be manifest in those who are competing. This presents a problem for thinking about sport ethics, since the will to win can become a passion unimpeded. In this work, it is assumed that we are moral and empathetic beings by nature, but that empathy can be developed or repressed by a series of contingencies. On the other hand, we also assume that the will to win is one of those contingencies, being inherent in competition. Thus, what may or may not happen during a game seems to be directly related to the relevance of the result and its consequences. Hence, to conjugate empathy and the will to win means to conjugate moral variables eventually opposed, since both of them are necessary for the sport itself to exist. In this thesis, I will argue that, during a competition, it is inevitable that athletes express conflicting feelings and that there is an inherent tension in the sport between the will to win and empathy. These two impulses are always present in the sport, since they represent, on the one hand, the desire of the sportsman to be successful and, on the other, the desire to respect the adversary, in order to guarantee a fair competition. Combining these two features without making them void is perhaps the greatest value of competitive sport. In conclusion, I will argue metaethically that the sport example shows that a pluralist conception of values is closer to truth than a monistic conception.

Towards self-adaptable intelligent assembly systems

Antzoulatos, Nikolas January 2017 (has links)
Currently, European small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are experiencing increasing pressure to provide high quality goods with customised features while at the same time remain cost effective and competitive in the global market. In the future, manufacturing systems need to be able to cope with constantly changing market requirements. Consequently, there is a need to develop the research foundations for a new generation of manufacturing systems composed of intelligent autonomous entities which are able to reconfigure themselves and to adapt their performance as a result of product and environmental changes. The research described in this thesis addresses the issue by developing three distinctive elements of an adaptation framework for next-generation manufacturing systems. The first element is a capability-based data model for the representation of manufacturing resources to enable self-awareness. The model captures the resources’ life cycle and performance indicators to provide information about the resources’ condition. The second element is a multi-agent architecture for plug and produce and the reconfiguration of manufacturing systems. The resource data model is utilised by the agent society, which is able to instantiate a model to represent a physical resource in the virtual agent society. The shift to the virtual environment enables a communication infrastructure for heterogeneous resources and the application of the digital twin concept. The agent architecture applies negotiation techniques to establish a plan for system adaptation. The third element is a methodology for automated experience-based manufacturing system adaptation. The adaptation methodology is based on previous runtime experience instances to generate adaptation knowledge. The information generated is applied to the current context and part of the agent negotiation which is dynamically executed in case of a disturbance. Collectively, these three elements significantly increase the flexibility and reconfigurability of a manufacturing system reducing the time required for integration and maintenance of complex systems on demand, improving their effectiveness. The developed framework is implemented and evaluated experimentally on a physical, industrial standard demonstrator and using a virtual simulation model. The experimental results confirm a significant step towards new solutions for the deployment of self-adaptable intelligent manufacturing systems.
