Du Plessis, Liezl January 2009 (has links)
The wide variety of magazines in the South African market and the economic relapse that has been experienc,e d worldwide has given rise to the increasing competition for higher circulation figures and advertising income. This phenomenon especially occurs between publications competing for the same target audience, such as the women's magazines SARIE and rooi rose, competitors over many years in the Afrikaans magazine market. Magazine covers play a critical role in this rivalry due to the direct connection between the popularity of the cover and circulation figures. The more popular the cover of a publication, the higher the sales, circulation and potential profitability will be. Thus it is of the utmost importance for any publication to make the suitable cover selections, considering that the wrong choices can contribute towards a decrease in circulation and eventually fatal consequences for the publication. This study endeavours to determine which requirements magazine covers should meet to be successful and also which tendencies can be identified in the cover choices of SARIE and rooi rose and how these tendencies can be explained. In literature it was found that there are several requirements and directions to which magazine covers should account to be able to be achieving success. It was also found that magazine covers consist of several elements, such as the logo (master-head), cover-girl/-photo, background colours, text and also competitions (announced on the cover). SARIE and rooi rose's covers were analysed in accordance with the requirements for magazine covers. It was found that these magazine covers complied with the formal requirements formulated in the literature consulted. It also appeared that the success of every cover and edition is determined by the cover elements as a whole and not only the popularity of the "cover-girl" only. Several aspects should thus be taken into account when planning the magazine cover. It also appeared that although the cover choice sets an agenda for readers concerning the topics they will eventually be thinking about and discussing, another dimension of agenda-setting rather is to the point, namely the role readers' preferences play (through their personal feedback and buying of magazines) regarding editors' decision in respect of covers. / Thesis (M.A. (Communication Studies))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2010

Corporate social responsibility in the Canadian mining sector: the case of Guatemala's Marlin Mine.

Nicoll, Georgina Elsie 30 January 2012 (has links)
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become something of a "buzz word" for many corporations, including those in the Canadian mining sector. This term merits examination with a critical eye, since the strategic uses of voluntary CSR initiatives go far beyond the altruistic desire to improve corporate practices in the areas of human rights and environmental protection. Through a case study of the protest movement against Goldcorp Inc‘s Marlin Mine in Guatemala, I will demonstrate that CSR alone, without a supporting framework of binding and enforceable regulations, is not enough to guarantee the protection of human and community rights in the global south. / Graduate

Ericsson, Karin, Östergren, Lisa January 2014 (has links)
The subject for our bachelor thesis is how sugar is portrayed in Aftonbladet. By analyzing newspapers from 1995 and 2013 we wanted to research if the portrayal of sugar has changed during the years. We have noticed that there is a trend of being healthy and fit today. “Strong is the new skinny” is a quote we can see in social media and on blogs today. In the humans pursuit of becoming healthy and strong the sugar has become the villain in todays society. In 2014, many cookbooks with sugarfree recipies have been published and the media can’t seem to stop writing about new diets and how to loose weight. To analyze the difference in how sugar is portrayed in Aftonbladet between 1995 and 2013 we made a quantitative content analysis. A conclusion of our analysis shows that there are more texts about sugar in 2013 than in 1995 and that the recipies are the dominant kind of texts in the latter. Most texts in 1995 was recipes and texts about the risk of sugar came second. In 2013 the recipes had decreased but there had been an increase in dietary recommendations. The authors behind the texts are mostly the writers or celebrities, but when it comes to the texts about the risks of sugar it’s usually a researcher who is the author. 2013 there was only written about one celebrity who lost weight, while in 1995 it was the individuals behind the texts. There is a mixed message about sugar, it is written about both as an ingredient in a recipe at the same time as critical voices warning the reader about the same type of foods are heard.

Ahlgren, Thorbjörn January 2014 (has links)
This thesis describes and analyses in three substudies how home-based measures for children are expanding and why an open care idea are established as part of the Swedish child welfare. The first substudy describes the national increment of what today can be considered as a treatment policy – non-institutional care in child welfare. The results are analysed with Kingdon's agenda setting theory and shows that the factors of what Kingdon describes as problems-, politics- and policyflow influenced the national increment. Significant mechanisms have primarily been, the profession, the society's concerns for socially disadvantaged children, negative experiences of institutionalisation and a political position to deinstitutionalise all care. The second substudy focuses on how knowledge and research contributes to ideological, professional, and organizational change in child welfare by analysis of Research & Developments reports and articles from the professional journal Socionomen. Based on the neo-institutional concepts of organisational fields and isoformism the study's results shows that a consequence of adaptation strategies and "rationalized myths" are a number of similarities in how home-based measures are organized and which measures that are used. The third substudy, a case study, analyses how we can understand a local development of ideas in social services for children with concepts from neo institutional theory. Interviews and municipal documents are analysed and shows that the local translation of an open care idea is characterized by discretion, personal preferences and action and affects the choice of method and organization. The study also shows a political mistrust of institutional care while there is at the same time political confidence in the individual social worker's ability to find solutions that allow non-institutional measures to be an alternative to institutional care. An overall conclusion of the thesis is that there is now a treatment policy in social services for the children, which involves extensive efforts at home and it has led to that more children receive support from social services. One result of non-institutional care increment is that it led to increased costs for municipalities for intervention for children and young people when out-of-home care has not decreased. Another general conclusion is that translation and adaptation of ideas to local contexts is something that generally fits street-level bureaucrats need for discretion.

Fernandes, Isis Cleide da Cunha January 2012 (has links)
This study lies at the interface of two specific fields: communication, particularly journalism, and the studies of gender. The main objective in this research was to analyze how Capeverdean newspapers represent gender-based violence against women in order to understand the importance and the prominence that they attach to the issue. Thus, we analyzed 134 articles, published in the newspapers A Semana, Expresso das Ilhas and A Nação in the period between 2000 and 2010. The theoretical framework that supported the discussions on the subject is based on constructionist theories of journalism, particularly the theory of agenda-setting, as well as in gender studies and even in some similar studies on gender violence in the media. We used content analysis as a research methodology in order to achieve the proposed specific objectives: to map the frequency (or occurrence) of coverage on gender-based violence against women in the Capeverdean newspapers – A Semana, Expresso das Ilhas and A Nação - between 2000 and 2010; to describe the characteristics of the coverage made by these newspapers on gender-based violence against women; to analyze the importance (or priority) and the prominence given to the issue between 2000 and 2010; to reflect on the role of newspapers in Cape Verde in scheduling discussions on the subject with the Capeverdean society. From the analysis it was concluded that the Capeverdean newspapers published news about gender-based violence against women, essentially, associated with real acts of violence, but the press tends to treat the issue superficially and without a deep exploration of it as a social problem. This form of privileged treatment by the newspapers is attested by the prevalence of police sources, the extremely factual report, driven by individual stories, less contextualized, with low presence of divergent opinions, and very few data (statistics, laws, policies, supporting services and existing complaints). The newspapers coverage of the issue suggests that the print media has not scheduled discussions with the society that allow a deeper understanding of the violence phenomenon against women and eschews from the role of social control, in order to monitor and call for public policies from the State to put an end to the problem.

To this end, we have used agenda-setting theoretical models that highlight the dynamics behind the ideas and the symbolic representation surrounding policy making, as well as empirical data garnered from the main state publications released during this period. Agenda-setting was studied in terms of the principal line of thought on Brazilian government and public administration, by analyzing the definition of the problems as presented by the government and the solutions chosen by the creators of reformist policy. These ideas, jointly with the analysis of political and institutional structures during the Cardoso government, allow us to understand how this issue rose in importance until they became a component of the government s agenda.
