Educational needs and assets of the visual impaired undergraduate students at a rural-based university in South AfricaMashiane, Martha Dimakatso. January 2022 (has links)
Thesis (M.Ed. (Community and Continuing Education)) -- University of Limpopo, 2022 / This study is an exploration of the educational needs and assets of the visual
impaired undergraduate students at a Rural-Based University in South Africa.
The research question addressed is What are the educational needs and
assets of the visual impaired Undergraduate students at a Rural-Based
University in South Africa. The study is underpinned within the interpretivist
paradigm. A qualitative research approach was adopted, utilising a case study
design. Data was collected through document analysis, semi-structured
interviews and observations. Analytic induction in which themes, patterns and
categories emerged from the data was deemed appropriate. The study sample
was composed of the Director of Reakgona Disability Centre, four the visual
impaired undergraduate students from the three faculties of the University of
Limpopo (Humanities, Management and Law, and Science and Agriculture), as
well as four academic staff members teaching the sampled students. The total
study sample comprised nine participants.
The study has revealed the existence of a highly inflexible curriculum, lack of
assistive devices, poor teaching and assessment strategies, untrained
academic staff, poor support from the majority of academic staff members, poor
support from a few of the peers with normal sight, difficulties during transition
from secondary school to university, and limited library services that led to the
marginalisation of the visual impaired undergraduate students.
The study also found that the visual impaired undergraduate students possess
the following educational assets: the availability of Reakgona Disability Centre,
support from the majority of peers with normal sight, support from a few
academic staff members, availability of associations and institutions that offer
financial assistance to the visual impaired students, and the health clinic that
provides health care.
Based on the findings of the research some conclusions were drawn. Several
recommendations are made to address the educational needs and assets of
the visual impaired undergraduate students at a Rural-Based University in
South Africa. Suggestions for future research are made to close the gap that
exists in research on the education of students with visual impairments

The impact of different reading/writing media on the education and employment of blind personsMoodley, Sivalingum 30 June 2004 (has links)
Particularly in recent years, prompted by the need to gain greater independent access to a wider range of information, many persons who are blind make extensive use of screen access technology, optical character recognition devices, refreshable Braille displays and electronic notetakers in a variety of contexts. These reading and writing media have proved to be so useful and effective, raising debates in the literature on whether there is a decline in the use of Braille, or whether Braille as a reading and writing medium would become obsolete. Following a discussion on the development of tactual reading and writing media as part of an historical background to blindness, as well as an evaluation of the various reading and writing media used in South Africa by persons who are blind, this study, using a quantitative approach with a survey design, aimed to determine the impact of the various reading and writing media on the education and employment of persons who are blind. Based on the findings of the study, what emerges forcefully with regard to the preference of a medium for reading or writing is that a greater number of persons who are blind prefer Braille and computers with speech output. Notwithstanding this, there is support for the need to provide instruction in the use of the various reading and writing media, highlighting the critical value and role of the various media. Additionally, while persons who are blind appear to be convinced that computers will not replace Braille, they were, however, divided on whether there is a decline in the use of Braille, and whether computers would replace audiotapes. Finally, conclusions, based mainly on the findings of the study are drawn, and recommendations, both for future research, and for an integrated reading and writing model, are made. / Educational Studies / D.Ed.(Special Needs Educstion)

Hermosilla Sánchez, Alejandro 21 March 2006 (has links)
The thesis studies the history of Argentina in relation to the work of Ernesto Sábato. The work tries, though the history of the south american country and the reading of the work of Sábato, to search conclusions that allow to explain the facts happened in December of 2001 in Argentina. For it, the thesis carries out a mythical study of the history of Argentina in which it emphasizes the made one on the figure of the emigrant, hero of novels of Sábato, to that it compares with Caín. Therefore, Caín, Abel and the Jewish God Yahvé, will be the fundamental personages studied in this one thesis to understand the destiny of the Argentina and the work of Sábato from a mythical, symbolic and religious point of view.

Från förskrivning till vardaglig användning i skola och hem / Learning, doing, becoming self sufficient : Mediation of assistive computer technologies for children who are blind or partially sighted. From prescription to everyday use in school and at home.Åström, Eva January 2009 (has links)
The ability to use information and communication technology is regarded today as acondition for participation in society. Closely associated with this are measurestaken to reduce the digital divide in society. Computer technology is accepted asmaking it possible for people with disabilities to manage most things on their ownthat previously required some help of others. However, access to technology doesnot necessarily equal usability. This thesis explores and analyses the mediationprocess that occurs when children with visual impairment, access assistive computertechnologies, and how these, by the help of support persons, are used in home and atschool. Eight children (between seven and eighteen years of age) were included inthe study, as well as their parents, support persons in school and professionals fromthe Low Vision Clinics. Research data have been collected through interviews, conversations, observations and activity oriented diaries. The mediation processinvolves a number of persons and organisations and is both organisationally complexand extended in time and space. Different rationalities are set against eachother, when professionally active persons from the Low Vision Clinics and schools, together with parents make it possible for the children to use the assistive devices. From the standpoint of the computer as an aid, three projects are discussed whosegoals are important for the child to achieve to be able to, in the short and long run, live life to the full. These projects are ‘learning’, ‘becoming socially involved’ and‘becoming independent’. The projects can often be in conflict with each other; forexample the children’s desire to practice on the computer against their wanting toplay with their friends at the same time. With a time-geographic approach, situations in which conflicts and trade-offs arise, as well as the coordination effortsmade by those involved, are analysed. The school constitutes an area in which theoverreaching societal ambition of a life on equal terms is realised. This studydiscusses how compensation for the individual as well as structural change foraccessibility manifests itself in organisation, structures and supportive efforts.

Previous issue date: 2013-03-05 / The literature has pointed to an increase in the incidence of children with visual impairments associated with neurological disorders and other disabilities, but the educational implications of the association of such impediments is considered a minor theme in the training of special education teachers. The present study aimed to develop and evaluate a collaborative consultation program in the field of visual impairment with a team of professionals of a special school for students with intellectual disabilities. The participants were the research/consultant, five teachers, two class assistants, a speech therapist, a physical therapist, a psychologist and an occupational therapist, plus 46 students with ages between 7 and 37 years. The study was carried out in three stages: preliminary step of conducting ethical procedures; Study-1, the diagnosis of institutional conditions; and Study-2, the intervention. The latter involved: a) theoretical training of 35 hours of lessons; b) practice based on case studies based on the development of a visual evaluation process of students, with the purpose of raising subsidies for educational planning and to apply the theoretical knowledge in practice; and c) final evaluation of the consultation/training program. The results of student s characterization showed that 30.4% were diagnosed with cerebral palsy; 30.4% with intellectual disabilities; 19.6% with Down syndrome, and 19.6% with other diagnoses. 83% of the students have already been through ophthalmological inspection with an average age of 4.2 years in first query. Two students were diagnosed with optic nerve atrophy and congenital cataracts, which was not reported by the parents to the school. As for the observation of visual difficulties, the parents have made 11 references, whereas the professionals made only 3. The results of the evaluation process of visual changes, duly complemented by medical information, were: 16 students (34.8%) showed no detected changes; 20 (43.5%) with minor changes (strabismus, refraction errors); 3 (6.5%) with visual impairment of ocular origin; 3 (6.5%) with cortical visual impairment; 1 (2.1%) with ocular and cortical visual impairment; and 3 (6.5%) with suspicion of visual impairment. The visual impairment was predominant among the cases of cerebral palsy. The case studies resulted in referrals to ophthalmological consultations, guidance to parents, propositions of pedagogical strategies, in addition the adjustment of materials and environment. The results concerning the evaluation of the collaborative consultation program showed that it was satisfactory regarding the professional development of the consultant and the consultees and regarding the possibilities of solving the addressed problem. The study highlights the need of ophthalmic and visual development assessment among students with intellectual and multiple disabilities and emphasizes the importance of collaborative practice between specialists, family and school professionals to an understanding of the problem of a student with visual impairment associated with intellectual or multiple disabilities. In addition, it suggests the need of a support network for teachers of special education, of generalist formation, what also includes teachers specialized in the visual impairment area, as well as other professionals with technical knowledge.

Borges, le poète, ou le miroir universel du monde / Borges, the poet, or the universal mirror of the worldSpychiger, Delphine Aimée 06 June 2014 (has links)
The study that we dedicated to the Antología Poética 1923-1977 allows to bring out the poetical art of Jorge Luis Borges as well as to observe in a careful way the speculiar dimension and the universal scope of his poetry. It condenses, reflects and enables us to apprehend the essence of the world in the whole range of infinite riches, as well as the unfathomable mysteries which have haunted the metaphysical reflexion of humanity from time immemorial. We bring out, in particular, a fair number of the most striking convergences between the main themes of Borges the poet and the major thesis of Arthur Schopenhauer the philosopher. It is obvious that Borges uses all his genius, all his art of perplexity and irony to shape, in a subtle way, a poetical mirror of the thinking of this great master that he venerates so much. Not only do we notice that the poetry of Borges enables us to be aware of our perpetual and irreparable condemnation to illusions and representations, but it also tries to take up the challenge of surpassing the illusions, of an access to the beyond of representation. Under numerous kaleidoscopic aspects of the Other (a sandglass, a garden, a library, a castle, a dream, the human thought, the individual, writing, time…), in fact it is always the myth of the Eternal Return of the Labyrinth which comes back under his pen. How can this myth – both personal and impersonal – (patiently forged by Borges all along his life) have met such a remarkable worldwide diffusion and have led him to be crowned by glory in his lifetime? This is the final question we will try to carry through.

Previous issue date: 2015-02-10 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The notion of a template for representing cellular automata (CA) rules is introduced. This enhances the standard representation based on a rule table, in that it refers to families of cellular automata, instead of a rule alone. Operations applicable to the templates are defined herein, and their use is exemplified in the context of finding representations for rule sets that share properties. Wolfram Mathematica's functional nature
and built-in equation-solving capabilities are central to develop these algorithms. The perspectives for using templates in further contexts are also discussed, along with possible extensions to the present work. As a support to the template concept, a Wolfram Mathematica package called CATemplates is presented, shared with the community using a public repository.
a utilização do software Wolfram Mathematica é central, dada
programação a ele associada.

Investigating The Universality And Comprehensive Ability Of Measures To Assess The State Of WorkloadAbich, Julian 01 January 2013 (has links)
Measures of workload have been developed on the basis of the various definitions, some are designed to capture the multi-dimensional aspects of a unitary resource pool (Kahneman, 1973) while others are developed on the basis of multiple resource theory (Wickens, 2002). Although many theory based workload measures exist, others have often been constructed to serve the purpose of specific experimental tasks. As a result, it is likely that not every workload measure is reliable and valid for all tasks, much less each domain. To date, no single measure, systematically tested across experimental tasks, domains, and other measures is considered a universal measure of workload. Most researchers would argue that multiple measures from various categories should be applied to a given task to comprehensively assess workload. The goal for Study 1 to establish task load manipulations for two theoretically different tasks that induce distinct levels of workload assessed by both subjective and performance measures was successful. The results of the subjective responses support standardization and validation of the tasks and demands of that task for investigating workload. After investigating the use of subjective and objective measures of workload to identify a universal and comprehensive measure or set of measures, based on Study 2, it can only be concluded that not one or a set of measures exists. Arguably, it is not to say that one will never be conceived and developed, but at this time, one does not reside in the psychometric catalog. Instead, it appears that a more suitable approach is to customize a set of workload measures based on the task. The novel approach of assessing the sensitivity and comprehensive ability of conjointly utilizing subjective, performance, and physiological workload measures for theoretically different tasks within the same domain contributes to the theory by laying the foundation for improving methodology for researching workload. The applicable contribution of this project is a stepping-stone towards developing complex profiles of workload for use in closed-loop systems, such as human-robot team iv interaction. Identifying the best combination of workload measures enables human factors practitioners, trainers, and task designers to improve methodology and evaluation of system designs, training requirements, and personnel selection
