O espaço do carnaval na periferia da cidade de São Paulo / The Carnival Area in the suburb of São Paulo city

Nanci Frangiotti 21 August 2007 (has links)
Throughout the presented study, aspects of the urbanization process of São Paulo City are looked into. / The research has as its theme the narratives about black in the parades of the samba schools of the Special Group of Rio de Janeiro and it is divided into three parts. The first one proposes to investigate the origin and the concept of carnival, as well as the development of this party in Brazil. Particularly observed are the peculiar aspects that have made Rio's associations so important and how they dialogue with society. The second part is dedicated to the study of the black's contribution to Brazilian culture and its insertion in the process of building national identity. This topic also addresses the participation of ethnicity in the formation and consolidation of samba schools, the way Afro-Brazilian themes have been developed over time and how these plots are configured as narratives that elaborate a memory and reformulate traumatic memories. Finally, it is made an analysis of four plots, one of each decade, from the creation of Sambódromo, in 1984. These are: Kizomba, a festa da raça (Vila Isabel, 1988), Orfeu, o negro do carnaval (Viradouro, 1998), Candaces (Salgueiro, 2007) and Você semba lá... Que eu sambo cá! O canto livre de Angola (Vila Isabel, 2012). Using the content analysis, the composition of the plot is taken as an object, both as regards its textual elements – synopsis and lyrics of the sambas-plot – as well as visual – fantasies, allegories and staging –, the latter observed, especially through television broadcasts, as well as complementary materials. It starts from the hypothesis that the elaboration of these plots is influenced by the conjuncture corresponding to it, whereas each parade also influences the social context in which it is inserted. In summary, the results indicate that despite their evident peculiarities, the narratives investigated do not avoid historical dramas and social problems. Optimism, hope, the exaltation of life – as a way of facing death – and the search for the elevation of the self-esteem of the black prevail.

This study investigates the approaches, dialogues and estrangements that are established between the processes of creation in the scene arts and the processes of creation in the samba school parades. In samba schools the spaces between members, family, community, culture, art, party and scene are very thin. Thus, we chose to cover this work through the Performance Studies, a multidisciplinary conceptual territory, and, in this case, the relief of the anthropology and the performing arts stand out. The created staging, by the author, to the Front Commission of Cultural and Social Association Samba School "Mocidade Camisa Verde e Branco", for eleven carnivals, appears as the theme for the discussion of these processes. Thus, the stagings themselves can be considered as a kind of result: the scene. However, the work points to possibilities of thinking about issues such as the treatment of time/space and quality of "presence" and therefore "co-presence" from the relations that these types de creation, scenic and carnival, provide / Doutorado / Artes Cenicas / Doutor em Artes

The carnival is considered, besides the most celebration in the whole country, a great showcase and a great moment to the Brazilian's tourism. With very expressive numbers, carnival has been increasing as great factor to Brazilian's economy and one of its main destinations, Rio de Janeiro, is no exception to this reality. This present work attempted to check the motivation of these tourists, who attend the block of the city's street, in choosing the hosting and which are the most used typologies by them. For such, it was necessary to analyze if the hospitality, both public and commercial, is a differencial in Rio de Janeiro to other tourists. Thereunto, 101 forms were applied for three days of the city's carnival's street in the year of 2014. The results collected show it explicitly that the tourist that attends the carnival's street in Rio de Janeiro is a hybrid of the tourist of experience and the demanding tourist, has an evident preference in staying in hotels-the most traditional typology of hospitality, even with other cheapest means, which are offered by the city.

Rethinking the 'mainstream/underground' dialectic : a case study of American feminist punk subculture

Labry, Manon 23 September 2011 (has links)
This dissertation seeks to analyze the complex and ambivalent relationships that exist between mainstream "dominant" culture and oppositional underground subcultures, through the study of American feminist punk subculture (notably under the form initiated by the riot grrrl networks). By confronting the views and discourses expressed by insiders of this feminist and anticapitalist subculture on the one hand, and drawing from the theoretical background of subcultural studies on the other hand, we want to examine the social function of these types of networks. How do insiders conceive their own involvement and their subcultural practices? What is the purpose of an anti-establishment underground subculture, if ever there is one? We also seek to question the concept of subversion: is it possible for a subcultural group to exert a disruptive potential in a society that apparently largely feeds on criticism of itself. We will sketch out some answers to these issues in the last part of this work by drawing some parallels between punk and feminist punk subcultures, medieval carnivalesque practices as they are described by Mikhaïl Bakhtin, and the Dionysian spirit depicted by Nietzsche.

Mexický svátek Día de Muertos: jeho vývoj a percepce pohledem mexické identity / The Mexican Feast of Día de Muertos: Ist Evolution and Perception Via the Perspective of Mexican Identity

Kalkusová, Tereza January 2017 (has links)
The thesis follows a thematic line in selected works dealing with the celebration of the Day of the Dead and various manifestations of the Mexican attitude toward death. It focuses both on its alteration in time and on the sources from which Mexican perspective of the death, as a part of the national ideological construct, springs from (existentialism, rural fatalism, Mexican Revolution, "philosophy of the Mexican character", tradition of the calaveras poems and graphics). The studied writings or sectors, which the thesis deal with, are: Nahua's lyric poetry, tradition of the calaveras poems and graphics, the large metaphysic poem of José Gorostiza Death Without End; chosen chapters of the essayistic creation of Octavio Paz, Carlos Fuentes and Carlos Monsiváis; Juan Rulfo's novel Pedro Páramo and Carlos Funtes's novella Aura.

Promoting Cultural Experiences Through Responsive Architecture

Elkanah, Shabonni Olivia 21 November 2009 (has links)
Dance, costume, and music are all reflective of a heritage that has been intact over three hundred years. The street activities during carnival season on the island of St. Kitts can be described as dynamic excitement between the onlookers, the Masqueraders, a local folklore group, and other carnival players. The interactive play amongst group members of the Masqueraders is one that tells a story of the colonization and perseverance of a nation influenced by Indian, European and African past. There is often, however a disconnection between an outsider, 'the audience', and the culture of the island. Only when the interactive play amongst the players is disseminated throughout the audience, inducing a response to embrace the culture does an outsider gains a better understanding of the culture. By expressing this interactive performance of the Masquerades through responsive architecture the stage can be set where the outsider can become submerged in a full cultural experience. In 2003 the Parsons School of Design succeeded in creating several interactive wall systems to monitor social behavior of passersby by creating movable walls that revealed seating ar- eas during high traffic periods. In the marketing world "interactive wall(s)" informs consumers, workers and potential clients of information on a particular product. Although successful within their own realms, these wall systems lack the ability to meet individual needs based on a particular cultural region. Analyzing the Masqueraders and conducting interviews will be of importance to this thesis research. Once information has been collected and compared responsive systems will be designed and tested. Frequent comparisons will be made with the investigations carried out by Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Kinetic Design Group and Parsons School of Design. Responsive architecture can be used as modern day folklore, as in story telling, to conjure up the cultural spirit of a place, exhibit architectural aesthetics while offering an outsider an authentic and spectacular interactive experience. The results of this investigation will be geared towards improving human experiences on cultural levels.

[en] CARNIVAL MASQUERADES: A STUDY ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF A PROCEDURAL AND COLLABORATIVE MEMOIR ARCHIVE / [pt] MASCARADOS NO CARNAVAL: ESTUDO SOBRE A CONSTRUÇÃO DE UM ACERVO DE MEMÓRIA PROCESSUAL E COLABORATIVO

CAMILLA SERRAO PINTO 30 August 2021 (has links)
[en] The theme of this intervention-research is the use of the ethnofiction method for the preservation and dissemination of popular masquerade demonstrations in Carnival celebrations all over the state of Rio de Janeiro. This research seeks to investigate how Design can contribute to the ethnofiction method for Carnival masquerades, given the aesthetic, symbolic and performative diversity of these traditions. This study is based on the assumption that illustrated fiction is a technique with potential to significantly spread the documentary survey. Therefore, this research seeks to determine the effectiveness of using illustrated ethnofictions to build a procedural and collaborative memoir archive. The theoretical contributions of authors from the critical perspective and from the Latin American Cultural Studies were essential to examine, from the narrative point of view, popular demonstrations of Brazilian masquerades, and their intermittences, focusing on the European colonial influences on these traditions. In addition, the gathering of oral narratives, and photographic and textual records helped understand the challenges for preservation and dissemination of these masked traditions. As a proposal for intervention in the research field, an illustrated fictional narrative for children and teens was developed. Based on the dynamics performed along the research, it was possible to observe how the use of drawings had an enormous potential as stimulus for the gathering of new data, enabling a collaborative and participatory mapping process of these masquerade traditions.

[pt] A MODELAGEM DE MINIATURAS DE FANTASIAS DOS BATE-BOLAS DO RIO DE JANEIRO SOB A PERSPECTIVA DA SUSTENTABILIDADE COMUNICACIONAL / [en] MODELING MINIATURES OF RIO DE JANEIRO S BATE-BOLAS COSTUMES FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF COMMUNICATIONAL SUSTAINABILITY

ELIANE CARLA DA SILVA VIANA 10 September 2021 (has links)
[en] The dissertation presents the mapping of some of the modeling of Rio de Janeiro s Bate-Bolas fantasies, establishing a relationship between design and cultural manifestation to carry out an analysis of the possibilities of representing fantasy at different scales. The research is based on the notion of communicational sustainability, which aims to focus on the study of a celebration its sustainable dimension in terms of symbolic aspects and the production of meanings around its diffusion. The scale problem appears in the research when souvenirs are proposed that can disseminate the culture of Bate-Bolas in a positive and playful way. Using participatory design, we conducted an intervention research that includes class and play leaders who are part of the productive sector. As a methodology, we conducted interviews with people involved in the production of costumes, records of processes visiting sheds, participant observation in class exits, online projects and collaborative production dynamics. This dissertation is part of the Motirô project, a partnership with the Museu da Pessoa, which records celebrations representing popular culture and reports the impact they suffered from the social distance caused by the epidemic of COVID-19 among them, Bate-Bolas. The study provides a dialogue between participatory design and the concept of pedagogical language of things by the author Pier Paolo Pasolini, which describes the importance of materiality in individual and collective memory. The end result was the participation of those who played in the construction of the souvenirs, with a focus on the symbolic representation of the celebration and using materials used in costumes, recycling leftovers from these production resources.
