Examining the Roles of Traditional and New Media in Crisis Communication: Case Study of Food Safety Crisis in Taiwan

Chen, Ching Min Unknown Date (has links)
This present case study of Taiwan gutter oil crisis focused on the well-known pastry bakery, Taipei Lee-Chi. This century-old bakery was involved in the food safety crisis during Moon Festival in 2014, resulting in a financial loss of more than NTD 40 million at that time. To explore how traditional and new media play roles in crisis communication for local businesses in Taiwan, the present case study examined relevant news coverage, official documents, and communication activities on social media. More specifically, the analysis included media’s attitude toward the issue shown on major newspaper websites, the responses of Taipei Lee-Chi, and public opinions revealed on its Facebook fan page. The findings suggested that traditional media have converged with new media, and the latter assumes such a powerful influence in crisis communication today. It was found that similar crisis information fast transits from one medium to another, adding more pressure to public relations practitioners to respond to crisis in a timely manner. Social media in particular may not be overlooked and could serve a useful tool in managing corporate crisis. The current study also offered new insights on how local businesses may deal with crisis in the digital age, as most previous crisis studies addressed cases of large national or global corporations.

OpenBSD Hardware Sensors — Environmental Monitoring and Fan Control

Murenin, Constantine Aleksandrovich 18 May 2010 (has links)
This thesis discusses the motivation, origin, history, design guidelines, API, the device drivers and userland utilities of the hardware sensors framework available in OpenBSD. The framework spans multiple utilities in the base system and the ports tree, is utilised by over 75 drivers, and is considered to be a distinctive and ready-to-use feature that sets OpenBSD apart from many other operating systems, and in its root is inseparable from the OpenBSD experience. The present framework, however, is missing the functionality that would allow the user to interface with the fan-controlling part of the hardware monitors. We therefore discuss the topic of fan control and introduce sysctl-based interfacing with the fan-controlling capabilities of microprocessor system hardware monitors. The discussed prototype implementation reduces the noise and power-consumption characteristics in fans of personal computers, especially of those PCs that are designed from off-the-shelf components. We further argue that our prototype is easier, more intuitive and robust compared to solutions available elsewhere.

Van Zyl, Dorothea Petronella 11 1900 (has links)
Na aanleiding van die tekste kom die ontvanger op sy beurt tot 'n eie seleksie en skep sy eie kousale en argumentatiewe strukture / While rhetoric has been part of the history of mankind for nearly 26 centuries, it is increasingly regarded as extremely relevant for our time - as a key to the way in which people think, argue and persuade. This study investigates rhetorical (persuasive) strategies in Afrikaans historical novels. The novels and their authors are first situated in their historical contexts and against the background of contemporary historiographical inquiry, and then analyzed by means of rhetorical concepts. Aspects of communication, which coincide with rhetorical categories, are combined with recent developments in the field of literary theory and historiography. Aristotle's views on persuasion and rhetoric are used as point of departure, but rhetoric is regarded as a dynamic method rather than a rigid categorization. Attention is given to rhetorical strategies in the novel Di konlngin fan Skeba [The queen of Sheba] by S.J. du Toit (1898) and Andre P. Brink's Houd-denbek [translated into English by the author as A chain of voices], but also to recent Afrikaans historical novels which exploit contemporary historiographical and rhetorical conventions. In S.J. du Toit's novel (which illustrates his knowledge of ancient rhetoric) as well as Andre P. Brink's (where the topic can be linked to litigation) rhetorical strategies are employed in such a manner that their texts can be regarded as products of their historical contexts. Both historiography and historical novels are mediated representations, characterized by a subjective selection (inventio) of data and its combination in verbal structures (dispositio). This can be related to 'extrinsic' or 'inartificial' proofs, which are not contrived by the author. The author exploits the so-called empirically verifiable facts as rhetorical strategies to create an illusion of truth or verisimilitude, which greatly contributes to the persuasiveness of the novel. The decision to write a historical novel implies a choice to keep to the historical 'facts', but the writer, in contrast to the historiographer, is ethically free to transform the inartificial proofs into artificial proofs, in combination with his own invented argumentatio and causa. Prompted by these texts the reader, in his turn, makes his own selection and creates his own causal and argumentative structures / Afrikaans and Theory of Literature / D. Litt. et Phil. (Afrikaans)

Wilde's Women : A feminist study of the female characters in Oscar Wilde’s comedies of manners: Lady Windermere’s Fan, A woman of No Importance and An Ideal Husband

Weber, Minon January 2017 (has links)
Towards the end of the 19th century, Wilde produced the three comedies that I will focus on in this essay. These plays, Lady Windermere’s Fan, A woman of No Importance and An Ideal Husband, are all comedies of manners: intelligent dramatic comedies satirising contemporary fashionable circles of society and its manners, as well as social expectations. This type of comedy is often represented by stereotypical characters, such as the fallen woman, the good woman and the young innocent maiden, all three of which I will investigate in this essay.

Implementing the circularly polarized light method for determining wall thickness of cellulosic fibres

Edvinsson, Marcus January 2012 (has links)
The wall thickness of pulp fibers plays a major role in the paper industry, but it is currently not possible to measure this property without manual laboratory work. In 2007, researcher Ho Fan Jang patented a technique to automatically measure fiber wall thickness, combining the unique optical properties of pulp fibers with image analysis. In short, the method creates images through the use of an optical system resulting in color values which demonstrate the retardation of a particular wave length instead of the intensity. A device based on this patent has since been developed by Eurocon Analyzer. This thesis investigates the software aspects of this technique, using sample images generated by the Eurocon Analyzer prototype. The software developed in this thesis has been subdivided into three groups for independent consideration. First being the problem of solving wall thickness for colors in the images. Secondly, the image analysis process of identifying fibers and good points for measuring them. Lastly, it is investigated how statistical analysis can be applied to improve results and derive other useful properties such as fiber coarseness. With the use of this technique there are several problems which need to be overcome. One such problem is that it may be difficult to disambiguate the colors produced by fibers of different thickness. This complication may be reduced by using image analysis and statistical analysis. Another challenge can be that theoretical values often differ greatly from the observed values which makes the computational aspect of the method problematic. The results of this thesis show that the effects of these problems can be greatly reduced and that the method offers promising results. The results clearly distinguish between and show the expected characteristics of different pulp samples, but more qualitative reference measurements are needed in order to draw conclusions on the correctness of the results.

Zhang, Zebin 15 December 2014 (has links)
The turbomachinery optimal design usually relies on some iterative methods with either experimental or numerical evaluations that can lead to high cost due to numerous manipulations and intensive usage of CPU. In order to limit the cost and shorten the development time, the present thesis work proposes to integrate a parameterization method and the meta-modelization method in an optimal design cycle of an axial low speed turbomachine. The parameterization, realized by the high order sensitivity study of Navier-Stokes equations, allows to construct a parameterized database that contains not only the evaluations results, but also the simple and cross derivatives of objectives as a function of parameters. Enriched information brought by the derivatives are utilized during the meta-model construction, particularly by the Co-Kriging method employed to couple several databases. Compared to classical methods that are without derivatives, the economic benefit of the proposed method lies in the use of less reference points. Provided the number of reference points is small, chances are a unique point presenting at one or several dimensions, which requires a hypothesis on the error distribution. For those dimensions, the Co-Kriging works like a Taylor extrapolation from the reference point making the most of its derivatives. This approach has been experimented on the construction of a meta-model for a conic hub fan. The methodology recalls the coupling of databases based on two fan geometries and two operating points. The precision of the meta-model allows to perform an optimization with help of NSGA-2, one of the optima selected reaches the maximum efficiency, and another covers a large operating range. The optimization results are eventually validated by further numerical simulations.

Performance Evaluation Of Fan-beam And Cone-beam Reconstruction Algorithms With No Backprojection Weight On Truncated Data Problems

Sumith, K 07 1900 (has links) (PDF)
This work focuses on using the linear prediction based projection completion for the fan-beam and cone-beam reconstruction algorithm with no backprojection weight. The truncated data problems are addressed in the computed tomography research. However, the image reconstruction from truncated data perfectly has not been achieved yet and only approximately accurate solutions have been obtained. Thus research in this area continues to strive to obtain close result to the perfect. Linear prediction techniques are adopted for truncation completion in this work, because previous research on the truncated data problems also have shown that this technique works well compared to some other techniques like polynomial fitting and iterative based methods. The Linear prediction technique is a model based technique. The autoregressive (AR) and moving average (MA) are the two important models along with autoregressive moving average (ARMA) model. The AR model is used in this work because of the simplicity it provides in calculating the prediction coefficients. The order of the model is chosen based on the partial autocorrelation function of the projection data proved in the previous researches that have been carried out in this area of interest. The truncated projection completion using linear prediction and windowed linear prediction show that reasonably accurate reconstruction is achieved. The windowed linear prediction provide better estimate of the missing data, the reason for this is mentioned in the literature and is restated for the reader’s convenience in this work. The advantages associated with the fan-beam reconstruction algorithms with no backprojection weights compared to the fan-beam reconstruction algorithm with backprojection weights motivated us to use the fan-beam reconstruction algorithm with no backprojection weight for reconstructing the truncation completed projection data. The results obtained are compared with the previous work which used conventional fan-beam reconstruction algorithms with backprojection weight. The intensity plots and the noise performance results show improvements resulting from using the fan-beam reconstruction algorithm with no backprojection weight. The work is also extended to the Feldkamp, Davis, and Kress (FDK) reconstruction algorithm with no backprojection weight for the helical scanning geometry and the results obtained are compared with the FDK reconstruction algorithm with backprojection weight for the helical scanning geometry.

Histoire de l’érosion de l’Himalaya durant le dernier cycle climatique : approches sédimentologiques, minéralogiques et géochimiques des sédiments de la partie proximale de l’éventail sous-marin profond du Bengale / Erosional history of the Himalayas during the last climatic cycle : sedimentological, mineralogical and geochemical investigations of sediments from the proximal part of the Bengal deep-sea Fan

Joussain, Ronan 08 December 2016 (has links)
The aim of this study is to reconstruct the erosional history of the Himalayan ranges, in order to connect these parameters to global climatic events and variations in the intensity of the monsoon. In this work, sediments from 3 marine cores collected in the Bay of Bengal, during the MONOPOL cruise were analyzed using mineralogical (XRD and grain-size) and geochemical (major, trace, Nd and Sr isotopic composition) methods. Chronological framework of studied cores were based on δ¹⁸O from planktonic foraminifera (G. ruber), and ¹⁴C ages dating (AMS). These cores cover the last 180 kyr. The multi-proxy approach conducted on these cores, gives us critical information about the source, to reconstruct the temporal variability of sediment export to the proximal northeastern Bengal Fan and its potential links to climatic changes (Indian monsoon and/or sea-level changes). Results also give insights on the chemical weathering processes and the dynamic of transport of the sediments through time as well. Moreover, a high-resolution study, on a site located on the active middle fan channel levee of the fan provides information on changes in the weathering pattern and the dynamic of transport of sediments from the Himalayan system during the Holocene. Thus, it is possible to quantify the impact effect of summer monsoon rainfall during that time interval. These results have been used to assess changes in the sedimentary sources (Indo-Gangetic plain vs highlands) and document the chemical weathering states of the detrital material within the Ganges-Brahmaputra river basin catchment.
