The emergence of social media discourse among Ghanainan University Students: implications for the acquisition or academic literacy

Anku, Joyce Senya Ama 18 May 2017 (has links)
PhD (English) / Department of English / Language, in general, has always been evolving and dynamic; the same can be said of the English language. Spontaneously, but not unexpected though, since the beginning of this 21st century which saw the introduction of the internet, there have been noteworthy manifestations in the structure and use of varied forms of the English language on social media. This study aimed at exploring, describing and explaining the linguistic features associated with the new communicative order – social media – and their communicative functions, vis-à-vis their impact on Ghanaian university students’ acquisition of academic literacy. To do this, the study adopted a qualitative method and an ethnographic approach in understanding the netnographic realities on social media. In addition, the sociocultural theory and the theory of error analysis served as the philosophical underpinnings which guided the research. Participants of the study (largely undergraduate students) were drawn from two universities in Ghana – the University of Ghana, and Valley View University. The total sample size was one hundred and eighty eight (188). It was found that frequent and prolonged use of social media discourse does impact negatively on the academic literacy of students. The findings also indicate that social media use overtime becomes addictive and this directly results in limited time span and low attention span of students. Again, the study found that over engagement on social media discourse leads to a general breakdown in both sentence and discourse structure of academic writing resulting into uncontrolled deviant spellings, omission and misuse of punctuation marks and capitalisation, as well as a high level of colloquialism. Despite these negative influences, it was found that there are some positive potentials of social media that can be harnessed to support academic literacy. The study, thus, recommends that the affordances of social media communication should be retooled to support the teaching and learning of academic literacy.

Anerkennung und Alter. Die Rolle von Biografie und Medien

Baetge, Caroline, Harnisch, Tobia 03 February 2016 (has links)

Mediální výchova pro žáky prvního stupně základních škol / Media education of first elementary school children

Machová, Anna January 2021 (has links)
Master thesis Media education of elementary school children, was written because of the need to analyze the current situation of media education. Media education at Czech schools is based on normative materials released by the government - Rámcový vzdělávací program and Doporučené očekávané výstupy. The theoretical part of this study introduces these the above mentioned materials and other legislative documents. It also brings a summary of historical development of media education and a list of the most important education materials, which were written in the past twenty years. For more than ten years Czech schools have been influenced by normative materials, which define how media education should be taught. The aim of this thesis is to focus on primary school children at the age of 9 to 11 years. A practical part of this study brings a detailed look at one class in a Prague based school. Interviews with pupils were based on outputs from normative materials Doporučené očekávané výstupy. The author's aim was to verify if children's knowledge of media corresponds to the said materials. Part of the in-depth interviews are samples of audiovisual materials and other activities.

"Ibland orkar jag inte vara källkritisk" : En kvantitativ studie om studenters källkritiska förmåga på sociala medier

Noreskog, Jennie, Eriksen, Linn January 2021 (has links)
Today our society has become more digitized than ever and together with social media, our media habits have changed. New media habits also together with social media create opportunities where information and disinformation can flow in an unstructured way together. It becomes increasingly difficult to then be able to navigate forward and know what is actually truthful. This essay will therefore study the source critical ability of college and university students on social media. The study has its background in source criticism, media and information literacy and was done with the aim of seeing how the students reflect on their own source evaluation abilities. The essay will also study if there are any problems in the source criticism that the student has learned. The theoretical framework for the study is about different kinds of media use and phenomena that exist on social media. We study instrumental, ritualized and selective media use, user-generated content, rumors, filter bubbles and media trust. The study is based on a quantitative research strategy in the form of a survey.   The result of the analysis shows that many respondents consider themselves to be source critical and also possess good knowledge in source criticism. The results also show that there are both pros and cons to spreading information on social media. Many respondents answer that they are source critical, but many also point out that more education in source criticism could be a good thing. The conclusion discusses that there is sometimes a lack of basic source critical competence in everyday life. The results also show that there is a need for training in source criticism that is adapted to today's social media information flow.

Kritisk mediekompetens i praktiken : En kvalitativ studie av åtta medielärares ämneskonstruktion utifrån begreppen protect, promote och empower

Rundqvist, Monica January 2008 (has links)
This paper describes how teachers of media view and construct their subjects. Eight teachers have been interviewed about their views and opinions about the media environment, their goals for media education as well as their opinions about the different course plans used in media education. The term Media Literacy works as a theoretical starting point for the study, since Media Literacy is the goal for most media education. The teachers’ answers have been analyzed by using three different approaches to media education: protection, promotion and empowerment. These three approaches cannot be entirely separated from each other because they constantly interact. The results of the study show that the interviewed teachers use an empowering approach in their own goals for media education, but the protection approach dominates their reasons for educating pupils about media. However, each teacher had their own way to construct their subjects. Another conclusion drawn from the study is that more interaction between teachers and media education research would be a good way to improve the quality and development of the media education.

Flödets Arkitekt : Hur medie- och informationskunnighet formar unga kvinnors upplevelser av skönhetsindustrin på Instagram / The Social Media Architect : How Media Literacy Contributes to Young Women's Experiences of the Instagram Beauty Industry

Vainio Ali, Nadie, Torndal, Elin January 2023 (has links)
The aim of the study is to investigate how media and information literacy (MIL) among young women affect their views on beauty-related advertisements and posts on Instagram, in accordance with infrastructure knowledge, mental health and purchase behavior. This is conducted through semi-structured interviews with 6 young Swedish women in the age range of 20-25 years old, through which an analysis of the retrieved answers is made. The analysis of the empirical materials takes a stamp in the theories of uses and gratifications theory and cultivation theory in relation to MIL in order to further prove the arguments and conclusions being made. The importance of MIL in this context needs to be highlighted in order to make young women more aware of the ways in which the media takes advantage of them and tries to manipulate them into a spiral of beauty standards and advertisements, making them the targets for further consumption. Considering that the digitalization is moving at a rapid speed, the possibilities for economic growth are doing the same thing. This means that beauty companies, just like any other corporation with a motive of profit, will continue to evolve their marketing strategies in accordance with female consumers' interest and needs.  The collected empirical data of this study shows that the interviewees have at least some basic knowledge of Instagram’s technical infrastructure in the meanings of algorithms and cookies, and therefore understand the basics of how their actions construct their Instagram feeds. The study also shows that the interviewees have a generally negative image of the beauty industry on Instagram; they like the possibilities of using Instagram as a source of inspiration and entertainment, but heavily dislike and disagree with the beauty standards being portrayed. They have all in some shape or form been affected negatively by beauty related content on Instagram - however, it shows that the ones with supposedly higher MIL and knowledge about algorithms more easily could identify the sources of negativity and steer away from it, showing the benefits of MIL in this context. The study also concludes that the interviewees generally are highly skeptical of advertisements and sponsorships on Instagram and therefore rarely purchase anything because of said platform. However, they have a higher tendency to do so if the product being advertised is endorsed by a, according to them, highly trusted influencer or if a discount code is being provided.  It is of importance to continue studies within this area in order to make deeper analysis of potential consequences of the beauty industry and standards on Instagram, so that more women can be taught and informed about how they can protect themselves from negative influences.
