Vocal music of the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) : insights into processes of affect and meaning in music

Gray, Anne-Marie 06 October 2004 (has links)
The focus of this study was to locate the lacuna that exists between cultural history and musicology, in order to assess processes of affect and meaning in vocal music as a vehicle for understanding the South African Boer psyche and circumstances during the war. The pursuit of locating the lacuna was best served by employing qualitative research methods that reflect the phenomenological paradigm. This allowed for an in-depth understanding of the Boers in terms of their own interpretations of reality, as well as the understanding of society in terms of the meanings that people ascribe to the societal practices in that society. A cultural-historical approach was necessary in order to highlight the experiential world of the Boers and gain some insider perspectives of the war. This approach did not, however, have much to say about the role of Boer vocal music in generating and articulating social and cultural meanings. On the other hand, the musicological approach which was based on research grounded in an examination of hand-notated musical scores, drew little attention to the role of music’s meanings in the social, historical and cultural circumstances of the Boer people during the war. After the historical context, which generated the vocal music was understood; the researcher was able to identify the lacuna as an aural void, due to the fact that affect and meaning cannot be grounded exclusively in an examination of cultural history or musical symbols decontextualised from sound. The background information allowed for the lyrics to be interpreted in melodic configurations, which were equated with particular moods, emotions and cultural meanings. This thesis thus responded to and succeeded in assessing insight and understanding into the psyche and circumstances of white South Africans during the Anglo Boer War. The thesis concluded by proving that by highlighting the aural void it was possible to move cultural history towards an accommodation with musicology. Through Boer vocal music it was thus possible to critically shape understanding of the experiential world of the Boer during the Anglo-Boer War. / Thesis (DMus)--University of Pretoria, 2005. / Music / unrestricted

Introspections into Rational Fanatics and Thoughtful Deceivers: Examining the Use of Memoirs in the Works of James Hogg and Charles Brockden Brown

Foster, Tucker 01 May 2019 (has links)
The memoir as a specific and unique literary genre has only recently been broached for in-depth critical study, with two major, book-length examinations of the genre appearing in the past decade. While the genre has been around in various formats with various conventions for as long as humans have written, only the memoir boom of the late twentieth and early twenty-first-century called for a more sophisticated look at the genre. This thesis will use these recent observations on the memoir as a genre to shed new light on two classics of gothic literature: Charles Brockden Brown’s 1798 novel Wieland and its serialized prequel “Memoirs of Carwin the Biloquist” and James Hogg’s 1824 novel The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner.

Antologie sovětské lágrové prózy v českých překladech a české sociokulturní recepci / Anthology of Soviet Prison and Labour Camp Literature in Czech Renderings

Hašková, Arina January 2013 (has links)
The thesis focuses on contrastive analysis of Soviet prison and labour camp literature published in anthology Jen jeden osud. The Czech version of this compilation was translated in 2009. The main task is to explore the adequacy of employed methods and approaches in translation. The thesis consists of two parts. The first part is focused on detailed analysis of original anthology and its translation to Czech. It explores types of memoirs containing the Russian anthology Доднесь тяготеет (Dodnes tyagoteyet (2004)), its variability of literary genres and its time radius. Then it analyses, how these criteria are reflected in the Czech version of anthology. The second part is focused on contrastive analysis of two selected memoirs from Yekaterina Olitskaya На Колыме (Na Kolyme) and Yuriy Fidelgolts Беспредел (Bespredel). Analysis focuses mainly on different category of prisoners, i.e. division on political and criminal prisoners and different classes of criminal prisoners. The important part was dedicated to the analysis of the author's style and its reflection into the target language.

LIANA GARCIA CASTRO 22 March 2022 (has links)
[en] Delicacies, affections, childhoods: grandparents, grandchildren and their stories had as general objective to analyze meanings built about childhood from narratives of grandmothers/grandfathers and grandchildren who have strong bonds with each other. The research deals with childhood in this intergenerational relationship, understanding it not only as a stage of life, but also as a human dimension, which can meet us at any age. It investigated if and how the relationship between grandmothers/grandfathers and grandchildren is potent to revive childhoods in adults and children. Walter Benjamin and Martin Buber were the main theoretical interlocutors, as well as scholars of their works and authors from different areas. With contributions from anthropology, especially from Tim Ingold, its methodology consisted mainly in sharing presence, caring, letting oneself be affected and learning. Seven grandmothers and three grandfathers participated in the research, between fiftyone and seventy-one years of age, residents of the city of Rio de Janeiro and one from Niterói. And six of his grandchildren, aged between five and twelve, live in the following cities: Rio de Janeiro, Niterói, Brasília and Montevideo/Uruguay. The criterion for choosing was familiarity, based on indications from grandmothers and grandfathers with strong bonds built with their grandchildren up to twelve years old. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the context of this study and the theme of the participants narratives, the fieldwork was carried out between May and December 2020, through interactions on digital means - Zoom platform and WhatsApp application. With the grandmothers and grandfathers, individual meetings were planned. With the grandchildren, conversation was collective. Књижевна дисперзија Борислава Михајловића Михиза / Književna disperzija Borislava Mihajlovića Mihiza / “Literary dispersion of Borislav MihajlovićMihiz”

Plavšić Maja 27 June 2016 (has links)

Jugoslaviji.
/
Author of this paper has intention to present
opus of literary critic Borislav Mihajlović Mihiz
within one place because his critically opus is
still scattered in literary magazines. Special
focus will be on six years time when he wrote
for magazine ‘Nin’ (1951-1956) and he earned
reputation of strict critic who likes very good
literature which has been written and published
in Yugoslavia after World War II.

Nollez, Juliette 02 December 2009 (has links)
This dissertation aims to analyze the style of Saint-Simon’s Memoirs in order to better understand the virulent energy delivered in its reading. In keeping with a rhetorical approach, this study first focuses on the discursive position taken by Saint-Simon and the foundations of auctorial legitimacy. It is explained how, using various literary devices, the author succeeds in fully exploiting the rhetoric of blame. He accomplishes this through two rhetorical orientations – judiciary and epideictic, the variety of which attests to the fact that Saint-Simon “dared to write anything”. The investigation goes on to demonstrate that the rhetoric of blame contributes to a more significant discourse: in the absence of all other recourse, Saint-Simon views writing as a way to avenge oneself of History. It is in this vein that the importance of reported discourse and the rewriting of History is revealed in the text of Saint-Simon’s Memoirs.

Stratégies d'écriture du mémorialiste homme de pouvoir : l'exemple des Mémoires de Nubar Pacha et des Mémoires d'un souverain par Abbas Hilmi II, Khédive d'Égypte (1892 - 1914) / The writing strategies of the political memoirists : The Memoirs of Nubar Pacha and the Memoirs of Abbas Hilmi II, Khedive of Egypt

Aly Mohamed Aly, Rania 29 March 2013 (has links)
Away from the political scene, Abbas II in exile, Nubar retired, each one has written his Memoirs to offer to the posterity their precious testimony in french, not only about their public life but also about Egypt’s vice-kings and about their time.Nubar, this pacha of armenian origin, and who served all the vice-kings of Egypt since Mohamed Ali to Abbas II, insists in his Memoirs on the projects which he defended the most and his won challenges over the years: the justice reform, the defense of the fellah’s rights, the rejection of the canal of Suez project, his opposition to the whims of Saïd and especially those of Ismaïl which have led Egypt to the bankruptcy.Abbas II defends himself in front of the history, especially against his rival’s charges: Cromer, the general British consul published in Modern Egypt and in Abbas II. The Khedive highlighted his nationalist struggle that he led in several fields: political, educational, cultural fields in order to face the British occupation. He explains the evolution of his relation with the British generals from the discord policy under Cromer leadership to the agreement that began in 1907 after the Denchaway incident (1906).This form of personnal writing differs from its related forms (the diaries, the autobiography, the travel novels) by its mixed identity (historical, legal, political and aesthetic). This explains the variety of the strategies followed by the pacha and the Khedive in their memoirs: strategie of denial, of disqualification of the opponent, of the interpretation, of the caution, etc. We study these texts focussing on the lirerary side which is usually marginalized in the benefit of their historical side. The Memoirs are weapons of the politician which give him free style due to their hybrid identity. The political memoirist multiplies his writing strategies to prove his credibility. He defends himself and makes his book a monument able to cross the centuries by both historical and aesthetic value. Despite the debate about the subjectivity of the memoirist and its relationship with writing the history, the historical value of Memoirs is undeniable. At the end of our study, we reclam to insert the Memoirs in the education programs: a way among others to save this precious heritage from oblivion and give it its rightful place in the collective memory.

Mémoires d'Unionistes et régimes mémoriels en Turquie au 20ème siècle / The Unionists' Memoirs and the Memory Regimes in Turkey during the 20th Century

Tasalp, Duygu 06 November 2018 (has links)
This dissertation deals with the memoirs of the Union and Progress Committee leaders, a secret society of officers, bureaucrats and intellectuals who ruled over the Ottoman Empire from 1913 to 1918. Going beyond an analysis of the events reported in these documents, this study explores the construction of a public narrative on the “Second Constitutional Era” (1908-1918) by the publication of these memoirs in Turkey. The analysis combines two dimensions, a synchronic one and a diachronic one. On the one hand, the discourse analysis highlights three major themes expressing and reflecting the subjectivities of the authors: themselves (the Committee), the revolution and the war. On the other hand, this analysis identifies variations within these three themes, and interprets them through a contextualization of the writing and publication of the memoirs. The major discontinuities in the Unionists’ writings thus make it possible to consider the existence of three “memorial regimes” (Johann Michel) – Kemalist, Unionist, Islamist – that appeared successively in Turkey during the twentieth century. The thesis highlights the convergence of these memorial regimes on the denial of the 1915-1916 Armenian genocide. Beyond this case study, it questions the immutability and the permanence of a negationist discourse on exterminatory violence, when developed by the perpetrators of this violence, and the phenomenon of paralysis that it provokes at the discursive level in the receiving society.

Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas e Confissões do Impostor Felix Krull: autobiografias ficcionais sobre o fracasso da vida burguesa / Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas and Confessions of Felix Krull Phoney: autobiographies fictional on the failure of bourgeois life

Coutrim, Erica de Cassia Modesto 09 December 2008 (has links)
The following degree thesis consists in comparing the novels Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas and Confissões do impostor Felix Krull. We attempted to analyse the aspects, which approach them, despite of the temporal and cultural distance between them, initiating from the elements, which imitate the autobiographical text and its respective implications. The lives represented in both novels diverge from what usually can be understood as a normal biography. In a similar way the autobiographical function assumed by Felix and Brás diverges from the ideal standard of the confession and the autobiographical memory. The reliability of the narrators can be also questioned if we considerate their singular conditions as narrators: one, as impostor, the other, as a dead person. This thesis is composed of six parts, in that we will discuss the following aspects: an introduction to the comparative analysis, the novels and their narrators, the intertextuality introduced in the form and in the subject, Brás and Felix life events, their condition as autobiographers and the readers role. Like the novels in general, Memórias póstumas e Confissões, that simulate the autobiographical narrative, attend to the role of the attendance. In both analised books this concern is reflected on the the readers inserted in the narratives. This dissertation handles this aspect lastly, trying to analyse the Felix and Brás metanarrative considerations according to their respective readers in the horizon of the fictional autobiography.
