This research is associated to the FAPESP 2011/0095-7 thematic project, \"Interdisciplinary palaeoenviromental studies at Espirito Santo coast\" and to the FAPESP Research Program about Climate Global Change (PFPMCG-FAPESP). The objectives were: (1) to characterize the late Pleistocene connection between Atlantic and Amazon rainforest and possible routes of interaction (coast, continent or both); (2) to identify environmental characteristics that indicates the Northeastern Espírito Santo and Southern Bahia as a stable forest since the late Pleistocene; (3) reconstitute the vegetation dynamics and infer climate fluctuations. Three sedimentary cores were collected: at northern Espirito Santo (ES) state, southern Bahia (BA) and eastern Minas Gerais (MG). Carbon and nitrogen isotope analyses and bioindicators in sediments/ soils, chronologically determined by radiocarbon dating, contributed to the local palaeoenvironmental reconstitution. At ES, from ~33,460 to ~13,740 cal yr BP the vegetation was composed of arboreal/ shrub cold adapted species and the organic matter recorded the dominance of C3 plants (?13C ~-28?), suggesting a cold and humid forest domain. From ~13,740 to ~9500 cal yr BP vegetation changes, with the increase of grasses and decrease of arboreal types. Between ~9500 and to ~4000 cal yr BP herbs were abundant with a probable mixture of C3 and C4 plants (?13C ~-24?) and algae, suggesting a higher seasonality between humid and dry season. From ~7300 cal yr BP until present the peat layer initiates its deposition, and the pollen records represents the current vegetation. At BA, radiocarbon dating in high-resolution, C and N isotopes and palynology each ~150 years from ~6400 to ~3400 cal yr BP showed detailed vegetational dynamics. From ~6400 to ~5620 cal yr BP the pollen record indicates abundance of trees and shrubs (up to 96%). From ~5620 to ~4850 cal yr BP occurred a slightly increase of herbs (28%) but the ?13C of ~-28% indicate C3 plants domain. From 4850 to ~3400 cal yr BP trees and shrubs abundance increases up to 94%, indicating the forest domain. The results confirm the forest stability and high local humidity, allowing to recognize the area as a probable refugee since 6500 cal yr BP. Vegetation, climate and the landscape has changed at MG since ~10,000 cal yr BP. From 10,600 to ~9500 cal yr BP, pollen was not preserved, C/N values (2 to 11) reveal the algal contribution, the ?13C (~-20?) indicate the mixture of C3 and C4 plants and radiocarbon date inversions indicate that the material was reworked. From 9,500 to 7,500 cal yr BP the vegetation was predominantly herbaceous with mixture of C3 and C4 plant sources (?13C ~-17?). From 7,500 to 7,000 cal yr BP C3 plants (?13C ~-30?) as trees/shrubs domains the polen record. From ~7,000 to ~6500 cal yr BP the pollen records the herbaceous abundance, dominated by C4 plants (?13C ~-12 to 18?). Peat deposition starts at ~6500 cal yr BP composed by C3 plants, mainly dominated by trees. Pollen records since at least early Holocene and the floristics of current vegetation did not show any disjunct specie with Amazon / Este projeto está associado ao temático FAPESP 2011/00995-7, \"Estudos paleoambientais interdisciplinares na costa do Espírito Santo\", e ao Programa FAPESP de Pesquisas sobre Mudanças Climáticas Globais (PFPMCG-FAPESP). Herrera Auccatinco, Elba Fabiola, Mamani Roque, Flaby Paola Aracely 30 June 2021 (has links)
Evolution is intrinsic to human beings and our environment evolves with us. The construction industry at the hands of man's need, seeks not only a territorial horizontal growth, but also a vertical one. However, this projection in the heights is limited to a fully spatial management with little interest in the transit capacity and refuge areas of the human agent during a seismic event. This research carries out an evaluation of a real existing scenario of the section of the avenue under study and the analysis of hypothetical scenarios with variation in the width of the refuge area. In this way, limit values of height and population density of buildings are proposed for a Prospective Management of Seismic Risk, taking as a base example a section of Av. San Felipe in Lima-Peru. The analysis of an efficient evacuation of the buildings towards the refuge area was carried out with models based on the agent with the Pathfinder software, three-dimensional models (BIM), evacuation times, the influence of the buildings, human behavior and the parameters were analyzed. zonal urban planning. The results of the present work graphically establish the pertinent direct relationship of the maximum permissible height of the projected buildings with the width of the refuge area for a correct evacuation. As an example, there is a section of Av. San Felipe with a 7m width of the refuge area corresponding to 18 floors as the limit height in the 10 adjacent buildings considering a total frontal length of 144m. / Tesis

Kikano, Faten 08 1900 (has links)
With 80 million people uprooted around the world, refuge spaces are coming to be the most visible urban transformations of modern times. These spaces, whose primary function is to shelter, often accommodate refugees for decades. Yet, host states, mostly developing countries, continue to host refugees without adopting comprehensive, long-term strategies for their integration, causing acute political, socio-economic, and humanitarian problems. The lack of a long-term solution is explicitly revealed by the conceptions of refugee spaces, often designed as temporary solutions. From a theoretical perspective, while social scientists and geographers have widely documented the geopolitical and anthropological aspects of forced migrations, they have neglected the concept of space appropriation and the production of place identity in refugee spaces. Indeed, their classification of space/place is often based on dichotomous conceptualizations and differs from refugees’ real-life experience. This research examines refugee spaces through the lenses of power, culture, and space. It provides new evidence on the appropriation of these spaces through refugees’ social, economic, and political practices, their interventions on space, and their perceptions of their new living environment. It also examines the impact of the strategies adopted by the international community, host governments, humanitarian organizations, and local communities. The research method is qualitative and exploratory; it is based on a multiple case study design. This methodological approach provides an in-depth understanding of refugees' perceptions on the socio-political environment undergirding displacement and on their representations of space. Three space typologies — urban dwellings, informal settlements, and organized camps — are studied with the purpose of assessing the relevance of the space-type in relation to its appropriation. The study uses ethnography as a complementary methodological approach, shedding light on the evolution of refugees’ living conditions over time and the transformation of their spaces from a cultural standpoint. It specifically focuses on Syrian refugees in Lebanon, a country which hosts the largest number of refugees per capita in the world. Overwhelmed by the number of refugees hosted, Lebanon excludes Syrian refugees from formal legal, economic, and urban systems, limiting their access to the territory, reducing the duration of their stay, and preventing the tangible and intangible consolidation of their living spaces. Yet, eight years later, the strategies adopted by the Lebanese government have proven unsuccessful: the number of Syrian refugees is roughly the same as at the beginning of the conflict and most of their spaces have been ghettoized. Results show that: 1) complex geometries of political, economic, and social powers determine the appropriation of refugee spaces; 2) weak state authority fragments traditional governance systems which leads to the emergence of informal power structures that control refugees and their spaces; 3) refugees’ exclusion exacerbates their vulnerability, while benefitting local stakeholders, subsequently reducing their chances of emigration and leading to the ghettoization of their living spaces; 4) the typology of spaces is not a major variable in relation to their appropriation; 5) the rooting of identity in the place of origin is an idea based on anti-migration political viewpoints; refugee spaces can evolve along a continuum between temporary non-places and socio-cultural places of life depending on the opportunities and challenges in the host context. Transcending the stigmatization, marginalization, and homogenization of refugee spaces, this research reveals the intimate reality of these spaces. It shows that they often become places of everyday life for refugees who form culturally dissimilar and economically hierarchical social groups. From a theoretical point of view, this research shows that hosting policies are often based on hostipitality, or a hostile form of hospitality which exacerbate refugees’ vulnerability and facilitates their exploitation. It shows that refugees’ appropriation and control of their living spaces increase proportionally with their legal inclusion and their socio-economic empowerment by the host state, inciting the rhizomic reproducibility of their individual and collective identity in their new habitat. From a practical point of view, the research shows that hosting policies adopted on the pretext of shortening the duration of refugees’ settlement are in fact in the interest of state and private actors. With the purpose of achieving spatial justice, the study recommends a change of paradigm in refugee policies with approaches that are more inclusive towards refugees leading to their self-management and their development, and adapted to the use and duration of their living spaces.

Chartré-Lefebvre, Félix 08 1900 (has links)
The crisis of nation-states regarding migration and public responsiveness to issues concerning minority groups contribute to make hospitality a topic of the hour. However, the concept in of itself does not rise any polemic and appear to be rarely challenged. This paper therefore seeks to provide a critical look at what hospitality actually is and at how it is practiced. The phenomenon was studied from the perspective of the hosts and their privileges rather than the vulnerability of the people welcomed. In the first chapter, the meaning of hospitality as a virtue, as a principle and as a practice, which are common modes of defining the subject in the scholarly publications, was put into perspective. A new definition of hospitality was then proposed drawing on the three modalities of its practice (spatial, social and procedural). This definition respond to the ways in which hospitality is most frequently problematized in the literature (around the home, the figure of the stranger and the multiple actions supposed to provide hospitality such as invitation, accommodation, care, etc.). In the second chapter, each specific way of welcoming that implies the border, the threshold, the camp and the refuge is discussed. Thereon, Gustavo Artigas' Las reglas del juego / The Rules of the Game (2000 ‒ 2001) reveals that the limits of hospitality represent a matter of conditional admission and control (border) or of adaptation to others (threshold). Also, ATSA's État d'Urgence (1998 ‒ 2010) allows to examine hospitality under the paradigm of social inclusion. From this angle, welcoming becomes synonymous either with taking a population aside from an oppressive regime (camp), or with a refusal to collaborate with the regime from the inside (refuge). In short, the dialogue between scholarly literature and participatory art uncovers the power relations that define hospitality, its opportunistic goals and its ambiguous effects.

Thorup Koudal, Johanne Louison January 2021 (has links)
The general aim of this thesis is to analyse and compare archival materials concerning Huguenot and Walloon families, and to carry out a sample analysis of these and whether it is possible to find the cities of origin where they lived until the Nantes Edict was revoked in 1685 and they were forced to flee because of their reformed faith. The selected sources consist primarily of materials from the French departmental archives and materials accessed via the internet as digitalized pictures (.jpg-files) and so on.  The descriptive section of this thesis concerns literature about Huguenot and Walloon history, genealogy, and exodus, as well as research into archive and information sciences primarily access and findability. I begin by describing the overall view, to set the stage. Then, I investigate the European archives. Thirdly, I proceed with a time intensive sample analysis of 30 known families from varying places in France, Belgium, Norway, and Sweden and finally, I attempt to clarify the difficulties that arise concerning findability and why those arise.  The method is genealogical research on sources accessible by the internet, and it turns out in the conclusion that 50% of the chosen families can be found in their home parishes, even if findability issues often show themselves, both because we’re talking about a religious minority, people fleeing the country, and a large geographic area. It was heartening and surprising however, that my search was successful in finding so many of the 30 families, and interesting to note which areas were easier to search than others.  The findability issues are further deepened because the archives’ Internet pages are not optimally designed as their metadata is often insufficient, and the pages furthermore so difficult to navigate since they are both widely different from each other, and because they are not, in the words of Wendy M. Duff, managing to hit the “perfect pivot point” between archiving and usage. Reasons for this include a lack of descriptive data attached to the digitalised files, and because .jpg-files are often not searchable, as observed as well by Catherine Styles.  More user research is required in the area of archives, so that better and easier access to these webpages can be guaranteed, especially given varying userbases and their differing needs in searching.

Entretanto, o acolhimento é hostil, assemelhando-se ao processo de detenção, não havendo distinção institucional clara entre a proteção da criança refugiada e o controle de fronteiras / [en] The Americas are experiencing the worst refugee crisis in history, characterized by the elevated presence of unaccompanied children. This work seeks to conduct a comparative study between reception policies for this group, considering Venezuelans in Brazil and nationals from the Northern Triangle of Central America in the USA. It was examined whether the reception processes and their applications are inclusive and adequate for unaccompanied minors, in light of the guidelines of reference organizations in the area. This study concludes that the Brazilian reception process aims to be receptive and inclusive, following the principle of the best interest of the child. However, the procedures lack more robustness and structure to be effective. Reception policies in the US are more mature and have the resources available for implementation. However, the reception is hostile, similar to the detention process, with no institutional distinction between refugee child protection and border control.
