"If I can't shoot the ball as hard as that guy..." : A study of grading and assessment in physical education.Jonze, Jon, Ahlberg, Petter January 2014 (has links)

Olsson, Caroline January 2013 (has links)
This thesis examines cultural and other symbolic capital amongst medical students in a Bourdian sense. Medical students at Karolinska Institutet, a Swedish medical university, were compared to four other prestige full educational programs in the Stockholm area. Investments in educational capital, media habits and other cultural investments were compered. The data was collected at an earlier stage at Uppsala University using a postal questionnaire. The data was strengthening with interviews with the medical students. The medical students demonstrated that they had a lot in common with students from the other elitist education programs that was part of the study. However they also had an extra dimension that was not found amongst the other students and that was a sense of an altruistic thought, e.g. that they wanted to “do good” and that was the reason why they wanted to become doctors.

Utbildare i dans : perspektiv på formeringen av en pedagogutbildning 1939-1965 / Educators in Dance : Perspectives on the Formation of a Teacher Education 1939–1965Styrke, Britt-Marie January 2010 (has links)
This thesis describes and theoretically illuminates perspectives on the formation of a dance teacher education in Sweden during the period 1939–65. The process is explored mainly through the visions and activities of Svenska Danspedagogförbundet, SDF (The Swedish Dance Teacher Association). Particular attention is paid to specific instances which eventually could lead toward the establishment of a government-sponsored educational program. The work is both chronologically and thematically arranged in order to enlighten time specific turning points that also encompass three major themes which can be seen as initiation, expansion and establishment. These themes summarize the problems my investigation zeroes in on. The chronological framework is bounded by the foundation of the SDF in 1939, and the first year of classes at the new pedagogical section of Koreografiska Institutet, KI (the Choreographic Institute) in 1964–65. The study focuses on the intersection of aesthetic, educational, and professional transformative processes which also includes the international field of dance. More specifically the study explores the initial process gathering practitioners in a professional association, which could lead both to unionization and the establishment of an education. As far as professional and educational questions are concerned the process toward establishing a system of dance teacher education followed a general growth and organization of the Swedish educational system as a whole. The educational alternatives which evolved between 1959 and 1965 corresponded to both internal and external needs, especially by exposing the lack of a competent corps of teachers. The study examines how these alternatives collaborated and competed with one another for a relatively short time. Though lines of contention were drawn between leading actors this work also illuminates how the profession and the art itself acquired increased status in a broader cultural context. The vision of modernizing the art of dance along with its pedagogy is shown to be as much about pedagogic matters as about aesthetic ideals. Regardless of actual differences and approaches to aesthetics and education the process was guided toward the establishment of a dance teacher education.

Boundaries, believers and bodies : a cultural analysis of a multidisciplinary research community.Pettersson, Helena January 2007 (has links)
The aim of this study is to analyze the construction of research culture and collaboration within the research studio Tools for Creativity, one node in the larger Interactive Institute. This studio is an arena that in today’s society is associated with boundary crossing, dynamics and variability: An environment with high-tech equipment, a staff equipped with diverse skills, and a flexible approach with the ambition of developing innovative tools based on ICT to strengthen human creativity. The present thesis is divided into four main parts. In Part One, culture as analytical framework is presented. This is followed by a presentation of field work, data and field site, the studio Tools for Creativity, and its employees. This includes a discussion of the methods of participant observations and deep inter-views. In the theoretical framework overview, perspectives used in this thesis is presented, including the so-called “new research landscape” debate, a background to this thesis. The introduction concludes with a chapter whith a reflexivity discussion including the making of the research self during field work and in the written text. In Part Two, entitled “Technology”, the informants’ definition of technology in relation ICT and the prototypes produced is ana-lyzed. The concepts “enlightenment optimism” and “romantic uneasiness” are presented as theoretical entrances to the chapter. This is the background for an analysis of the future- and speed-oriented discourse that characterizes the informants’ perception of technology. The aim of using technology to support human creativity, challenge presence and facilitate multi-cultural communication is further discussed. This is juxtaposed with another aspect of technol-ogy, namely the informant’s critique of technology’s impact on mankind, humanity and society. Part Three, “Re-search”, deals with interpretations and negotiations of the concept of research and the researcher conducted by the informants at Tools for Creativity. First, the concept of “boundary object” is presented followed by its use order to analyze the construction of research and the researcher in a multi-disciplinary arena like the studio. An important part of the making of the researcher is the trading of skills in the attempt of legitimizing the individuals’ efforts at conducting research. Here, focus is the negotiation of research as an activity between individuals representing the sciences and the arts, as well as those with formal education and autodidacts. Attempts to manage a broader research concept are placed in relation to academic quality demands. In this analysis, the point of departure is Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of symbolic capital. Here, gender is included as symbolic capital. Part Four is called “Reflections” and contains a discussion of the study and reflections concerning field work. This is followed by a summation of what happened to Tools for Creativity and Interactive Institute after finished field work.

Previous issue date: 2012-12-03 / This paper aims to discuss the mathematical Olympiads in terms of Bourdieu's theory, seeking demonstrate valorization strategies and adoption of the field of mathematics linked to social practices related to OBMEP. The concepts of field and symbolic capital were used for analysis of research papers in order to understand the mathematical Olympiads as a strategy for appreciate mathematical fields as well as a kind of normative evaluation. This paper promotes a discussion about the alleged role of social inclusion attributed to these competitions. The research is a qualitative approach and involved the preparation of a history of the Mathematical Olympiads, literature research and document analysis. Bourdieu's theory may us understand that the field of mathematics has sufficient capital to reward and recruit talent while it naturalizes, through this process, the ideology of the gift and the inculcation of a cultural arbitrary on the technological and scientific development, which is linked to factors and interests of the economic field. This critical view for the Olympiads can contribute to the expansion of studies in the field of mathematics education in relation to school evaluation and the symbolic value of mathematics, looking this as a kind of symbolic mechanism of domination, valorization and conservation of the field of mathematics. Then OBMEP can be understood as the manifestation of an alliance between the scientifical and political field, which simultaneously establishes the mathematical culture and corroborates the economic interests.

Invisible voices : understanding the sociocultural influences on adult migrantsʼ second language learning and communicative interactionZachrison, Mozhgan January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation is a qualitative study exploring the sociocultural influences on adult migrants’ second language learning and the communicative interaction through which they use the language. Guided by a theoretical perspective based on the concepts of life-world, habitus, social capital, symbolic honor, game, and the idea of the interrelatedness of learning and using a second language, this study aims to understand how migrants’ everyday life context, attachments to the home country, and ethnic affiliations affect the motivation for and attitude towards learning and using Swedish as a second language. Furthermore, the study explores in what way the context within which the language is taught and learned might affect the language development of adult migrants. The research questions of the study focus on both the institutional context, that is to say, what happened in a particular classroom where the study observations took place, and a migrant perspective based on the participants’ experiences of living in Sweden, learning the language and using it. Semi-structured interviews, informal conversational interviews, and classroom observations have been used as strategies to obtain qualitative data. The findings suggest that most of the participants experience feelings of non-belonging and otherness both in the classroom context and outside the classroom when they use the language. These feelings of non-belonging make the ties to other ethnic establishments stronger and lead to isolation from the majority society. The feelings of otherness, per se, are not only related to a pedagogical context that advocates monoculturalism but are also rooted in the migrants' life-world, embedded in dreams of going back to the home country, while forging a constant relation to ethnic networks, and in the practice of not using the Swedish language as frequently in the everyday life context as would be needed for their language development. / <p>ISBN 978-91-7104-591-1 (Malmö) ISBN:978-91-7519-271-0 (Linköping)</p>

"Hmyzí královna v říši neobvyklých pochoutek": Zážitkový turismus, jídelní festivaly a soukromé ochutnávky v perspektivě sociokulturní antropologie / "Insect Queen in unusual delicacies realm": Culinary tourism, food festivals and private tasting events in the context of sociocultural anthropologyMatušínská, Radka January 2018 (has links)
The goal of this thesis is to discuss how unusual delicacies are conceptualized in the perspective of sociocultural anthropology - specifically, in the context of anthropology of food. Unusual delicacies are to be understood as non-traditional, unique, but at the same time, shocking or perceived as "bizarre" meals. The complex description of the individual's experience during the consumption of unusual delicacies will help to analyze what is the overall perception of the experience, its pervasion into self-presentation, as well as what are the main motivations for it. Further, it is discussed what role the unusual delicacies play in the context of exploring foreign countries and whether they possess any cultural and symbolic meaning.

The creative spark : A qualitative analysis of students’ pathways to preparatory art schools using Bourdieusian conceptsHögkil, Lisa January 2020 (has links)
This qualitative study focuses on trajectories leading to preparatory art schools. It departs from in-depth interviews of considerable length with a small number (9) of students in preparatory art schools in Stockholm. The interviews shed light on the family of origin, the school years, and the time in upper secondary school and afterwards where the wish to enter an art school was definitively shaped. The study centres on three major questions: how is artistic symbolic capital accumulated and a habitus shaped that valorises art? What is the importance of a geographically situated social space for the formation of the artistic project? How does the trajectory leading to the preparatory art schools reflect dimensions related to the existence of art as social field, such as illusio, doxa, nomos and (a socialised) libido? A major finding of the study was that inherited artistic symbolic capital greatly facilitated the path leading to the preparatory art schools, while students originating from families with weak or no proximity to artistic practices had to find their own way to art. The study also illustrates that strong academic and general cultural capital in the family of origin is not sufficient for shaping an artistic project and personality. Except for inherited familiarity with the world of artistic expression, the study points to the importance of attending artistically oriented streams in compulsory education and, in particular, to the crucial role of personal networks formed during and after upper secondary school and of being part of a local context in which the field of art was more or less indirectly present though individual persons, events and institutions. These findings remind of the autonomous character of the field of artistic practices, with its own institutions and forms of consecration.

[en] SERROTE AND ZUM: EDITORIAL PROJECT AS A POLITICAL PROJECT / [pt] SERROTE E ZUM: PROJETO EDITORIAL COMO PROJETO POLÍTICORAFAELA LINS TRAVASSOS SARINHO 13 May 2021 (has links)
[en] The aim propouse of this work is to understand the public image of Instituto
Moreira Salles (IMS) based on the analysis of the editorial projects of the magazines
Serrote and ZUM. Realizing the social organization as a space of struggle for distinct
capitals, this work uses the concepts of Bourdieu to explain the strategies of
reconversion of capital operated by the Moreira Salles´s family. The articulation of
methods of reconversion of economic capital into symbolic capital functions as a way
of gaining prestige and distinction in several socially valued fields. Thus, this work
proposes a dive in the history of the family so that it is understood the realization of
investments in cultural patrimonies that culminate, among many projects, in the
project of the cultural institute. The IMS consists of the organization of historical
collections, the constitution of editorial projects and other activities linked to the
preservation of the Brazilian memory. It is possible to notice that the editorial projects
of the magazines count on processes that go beyond the treatment given to the text to
be published, conceiving also in activities involved in the relationship between editors
and designers, the format in which they are constituted, the choice of paper, in sum,
aspects that together help in understanding the dynamics of how magazines are
configured and put into circulation. The results demonstrate that Serrote and ZUM
can be understood as an IMS strategy to achieve a more accessible public image,
different from the one it established when focusing on the preservation of collections.
By fostering contemporary debates, moving away from the historical issues that
usually permeate the institutional sectors established in their physical spaces, the
magazines help IMS to move within the social structure and set up a new reputation in
the field of culture and national public debate.
