This work proposes a reflection about the literate process in public schools. Nessa empreitada, recorro ?s no??es de categoriza??o (LAKOFF, 1987; FELDMAN, 2006), constru??es (BERGEN, CHANG, 2003, 2005), frames (LAKOFF, 2004; DUQUE, 2015), framing (LAKOFF, 2004), esquemas (LAKOFF, 1987; JOHNSON, 1987; DUQUE, 2015), met?foras (LAKOFF, JOHNSON, 1980, 1999; LAKOFF, 2008), contexto (VAN DIJK, 2012), corporalidade (LAKOFF, JOHNSON, 1999; BERGEN, 2005, 2010), affordances (GIBSON, 1977, 1979) e idiomaticidade (FILLMORE, KAY, O?CONNOR, 1988; SILVA, 2012). / In this thesis, we investigate the role of idiomatic expressions in the process of meaning construction and its implications for speech. To that end, we assume that the application of the Grammar Model for Embodied Construction in the analysis of idiomatisms, in specific contexts of use, provides subsidies for the understanding of the studied phenomenon, since it highlights the way in which frames, schemes and metaphorical projections are integrated in the production semantic specifications (semspec); the way in which these ?semspec? are addressed in the scope of the situational and discursive contexts; and the way in which the inferences are produced throughout the discursive processing. In this work, we rely on the notions of categorization (LAKOFF, 1987; FELDMAN, 2006), constructions (BERGEN, CHANG, 2003, 2005), frames (LAKOFF, 2004; DUQUE, 2015), framing (LAKOFF, 2004), schemes (LAKOFF, 1987; JOHNSON, 1987; DUQUE, 2015), metaphors (LAKOFF, JOHNSON, 1980, 1999; LAKOFF, 2008), context (VAN DIJK, 2012), corporeality (LAKOFF, JOHNSON, 1999; BERGEN, 2005, 2010), affordances (GIBSON, 1977, 1979) and idiomaticity (FILLMORE, KAY, O?CONNOR, 1988; SILVA, 2012). The advocated hypothesis claims that idiomatic expressions organize a set of metaphorical mappings based on framing, i.e., the framework modeling process, through which the speech is structured. The corpus of this work is made up of the Portuguese idiomatic expressions ?abandonar o barco?, ?chutar o balde?, ?agarrar com unhas e dentes? and ?filho de peixe peixinho ??, which are distributed in 15 texts extracted from the internet by means of the Google search engine. The employed methodology has a qualitative nature, as it enables the accomplishment of an empirical analysis of data, without the worry about relying on quantitative information, and is underpinned by the Model of Constructional Analysis, which has a formalism of linguistic analysis specifically made to compose a simulation-based modeling of meaning construction. The information obtained in the analysis points out that idiomatic expressions not only associate conventionalized and schematic meanings, but also integrate elements such as actions, inferences and abstractions, thereby influencing the discursive organization and the processes of meaning construction of texts.

A Construction Grammar Approach to the Phrase

Berglund, Jonny January 2009 (has links)
This essay adopts a construction grammar approach to the linguistic pattern why don’t you. It argues that the pattern can have two different senses: an interrogative sense and a suggestive sense. Further it argues that the suggestive sense is a construction similar to the definition of a construction described by construction grammar theory. In other words, the linguistic pattern why don’t you can have a specific underlying semantics that cannot be reached by an examination of its formal pattern.

Voyage au bout de la nuit, Louis-Ferdinand Céline: o itinerário de uma viagem / Voyage au bout de la nuit, Louis-Ferdinand Céline: the itinerary of a trip

Regina Lima Dantas Miguel 24 August 2010 (has links)
Journey to the end of the night (Voyage au bout de la nuit), by the French author, Louis- Ferdinand Celine, caused a stir in literary circles and the public at large when it was launched in 1932. Its vitriolic tone and the popular idiom in which it was written were quite unprecedented, as was the vehemence with which Ferdinand Bardamu decried social injustice. This, the first book written by Celine, created a huge impact and until today continues to occupy an important place in the world of literature. The authors intention to breathe new life into the French literary canon by introducing the popular idiom into the written language was, without doubt, one of the factors behind this impact. The form of protest adopted by the novel is two-pronged: alongside the vehement denunciation of an absurd world, was the blow which was aimed at the very heart of academic literary language. There can be no doubt that the vast resonance created by the work is the result of this choice of language, which was considered to be both innovative and revolutionary when judged by the standards of its time.Today, Celines invention of writing the way we speak, has a particular air of spontaneity, which would have been lost, had the author instead resorted to the artifice of a more elaborate style. If the choice of language set off a wave of resounding scandals at the time, nowadays it is not the language, but rather the violent manner in which Bardamu refers to his peers that creates a similar impact upon contemporary readership. The purpose of this study is therefore to examine the two driving forces behind the text: the writing and Celines universe. The manner in which the voyage is approached leads to the perception of a world wrought from a dreamstate dimension, since it is an imaginary voyage which is announced in the foreword of the novel. This journey of ours is entirely imaginary. The journey to the nights end, undertaken by Celine has the sense of a slow and deliberate journey towards death. Once immersed in this universe, we are led to a place where the itineraries of Bardamu and Celine converge, suggesting strong autobiographical associations. Finally, this analysis allows us to reflect on the usage of a language constructed upon the code of a popular idiom, a mechanism used by its creator to introduce the paradox of emotive reasoning expressed in the popular idiom, into the written language.

This paper sure is a brass ring!  : A quantitative study on the effect of context for non-native students’ interpretation of English idioms.

Halling, Angelica January 2018 (has links)
Idioms are a big part of languages but can cause trouble for communication, especially for non-native speakers of a language. Interpreting idioms correctly means that one must derive a figurative meaning from words that individually mean something else. Recent research primarily focuses on the impact of context for successful idiom comprehension and seems to prioritize native speakers’ understanding of them. This study investigates the impact of context for Swedish non-native upper secondary students’ interpretation of English idioms. It further explores if grades and level of education are factors to consider. In a two-part, multiple-choice test, 53 students were presented with 10 idioms in context and 10 idioms out of context with two additional questions regarding level of education and last received grade in English. The students were also asked whether they had seen each idiom before or not. The results showed that context and grade seem to have impact on non-native students’ interpretation of idioms to some extent, but level of education does not seem to. One interesting finding was that idioms were interpreted correctly even though they were neither presented in context nor were considered familiar by the students. A possible conclusion is therefore that even if context is an important factor for successful idiom interpretation for non-native students, several other factors might be of equal importance.

Ursäkta, men skulle du kunna göra mig en björntjänst? : Om idioms betydelser och fortlevnad i svenskan

Trulsson, Anders January 2008 (has links)

Španělská a česká frazeologie a idiomatika s přihlédnutím k publicistickým textům / Spanish and Czech Phraseology and Idioms Considering Journalistic Texts

Bernáthová, Dominika January 2016 (has links)
This thesis is focused on the analysis of phrasemes and idioms in Spanish and Czech journalistic texts. In its theoretical part, we discuss the definition of phraseology and idioms as linguistic disciplines within Czech and Spanish linguistics. The practical part contains a sample corpus of phrases and idioms based on selected excerpts from newspaper articles during a specific time period. These linguistic units are divided into thematic groups by their base words, their meaning is explained and formal and substantive similarities between Czech and Spanish are observed. We do not aim at presenting a set of idioms of the language, only to point out the currently used idioms in journalistic texts. Key words phraseology, set phrase, idiom, Czech language, Spanish language, journalism, semantics, equivalent

Frazémy v reklamě / Idioms in Advertising

Helcmanovská, Veronika January 2021 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with the text-forming and pragmatic potential of phraseological units in advertising. The aim is to document the phraseological apparatus within the Czech and Slovak advertising space from 2017 to 2019. The theoretical basis of the work are the concepts of two dimensions of phraseology - forms and faces of the idioms, linguistic actualization and linguistic picture of the world. In the practical part, idioms in selected Czech and Slovak advertising communications are interpreted by a descriptive and comparative method through a qualitative analysis. The anthropocentric orientation of phraseology and the linguistic image of the world is confirmed, as well as the thesis about the dominance of somatic components in phraseological units (life and phraseological universals). Idioms, linguistic peculiarities, an aestheticizing factor with a charge of expressiveness, an attractive function and the ability to evoke a persuasive effect, have proven to be productive and effective means of expression of advertising messages that can present any message (social, economical, ecological, educational or cultural) in an understandable, entertaining and attractive way, helping to meet the basic requirements of advertising.
