Förgänglighet och flerspråkighet : en översättning av Fleur Jaeggys novell ”Den sista fåfängan” med översättningsvetenskaplig kommentar / Impermanence and multilingualism : a translation of the short story “Last vanities” by Fleur Jaeggy with translation commentary

Zampa Hatt, Emma January 2022 (has links)
In this essay, my translation of the Swiss-Italian author Fleur Jaeggy’s short story “La vecchia vanesia” (“Last vanities”) from the collection of short stories La paura del cielo (Last vanities) from 1994, is presented and discussed. A stylistic analysis of the source text, my theoretical framework and translation principle as well as comments on thematically categorized translation problems are also included in the work. Questions raised in the essay include how form as well as content can be rendered in the Swedish target text with the dynamic equivalence by Eugene Nida as a translation principle. The work has shown that to achieve a natural result, it’s crucial to adapt grammatical and lexical aspects to norms in the target language. Stylistic aspects constitute important parts of the emotional tone in the source text and are reproduced in the target text to achieve dynamic equivalence.

Han som aldrig dör : Sångöversättning av fem av Juan Gabriels sånger med kommentar / He who never dies : Song translation of five of Juan Gabriel's songs with commentary

Nohrstedt, Emilia January 2023 (has links)
In this bachelor’s thesis, the work of translating five songs by Juan Gabriel from Spanish to Swedish (Ya lo sé que tú te vas, Hasta que te conocí, Vienes o voy, Abrázame muy fuerte and Yo te recuerdo) is reported and analyzed through a translation theory commentary. The commentary presents a brief overview of different aspects of song translation, then analyzes the source texts, and then finally proceeds to present the translation work. The theory is based on Johan Franzon's functional song translation theory. The aim was to create singable translations with the purpose to highlight complex problems in song translation, especially from Spanish to Swedish. Challenges that arose during the translation are discussed and relevant differences between the languages are presented.

Subjektivitet i översättning : En översättningsteoretisk undersökning av Augustinus och Friedrich Hayeks förståelser av människan i relation till Gud och marknad / Translating Subjectivity : An Examination of Augustine and Friedrich Hayek’s Notion of the Human in Relation to God and the Market in the Context of Cultural Translation

Schyborger, Josef January 2024 (has links)
This thesis examines Augustine and Friedrich Hayek’s notion of subjectivity in the context of cultural translation theory, following Talal Asad. Previous researchers have related Hayek to political theology and economic theology by observing the notion of market’s divinizing implications and tendencies, often through generalized methods of analysis and allegorical comparison. Research treating neoliberal subjectivity seldom considers it building on Christian theological notions. Given the lack of research on the given topic, more specific the relationship between theological and neoliberal understandings of subjectivity, it is pertinent to examine neoliberal subjectivity as expressed by Hayek, by comparing to saint Augustine. By a close reading of one of western societies most important theologians, Augustine, and comparing to Hayek’s economic vision of society, this study examines how Augustine and Hayek interact by using cultural translation as a methodological framework. Augustine’s notion of God, and Hayek’s notion of the market, is analyzed as explicitly proposing, or implicitly presupposing, notions of subjectivity. Translatability and untranslatability are used as methodological concepts for discussing where Augustine and Hayek’s notions overlap and where they differ. This study demonstrates that Hayek’s understanding of subjectivity in relation to the market has comparable aspects with Augustine’s understanding of human subjectivity in relation to God. Though some aspects where the authors differ, such as the understanding of knowledge, might be described as untranslatable. Use of cultural translation theory, allows for important nuances in the relationship between theology and economic understandings of subjectivity to transpire in analysis.

”Da domani [...] te ne vai di nuovo a mettere la ricotta nei cannoli” : La traduzione dei realia culturospecifici dall’italiano allo svedese nella serie dell’Amica geniale di Elena Ferrante / ”Da domani [...] te ne vai di nuovo a mettere la ricotta nei cannoli” : Översättning av kulturspecifika ord från italienska till svenska i romanserien Neapelkvartetten av Elena Ferrante

Sandberg, Amanda January 2018 (has links)
This essay focuses on the cultural aspects of translation, mainly on the cultural-specific elements known as realia, when translating from Italian to Swedish. As the realia might be unknown to the reader of the target text and as they often have no exact correspondence in the target language, they often pose a challenge for the translator. The essay examines which strategies the translator has used to translate cultural-specific elements and the question is raised whether the translation, regarding the cultural aspects, is orientated towards the source culture (adequacy-orientated) or towards the target culture (acceptability-orientated). Three of the Neapolitan Novels written by pseudonymous Elena Ferrante, Storia del nuovo cognome (2012), Storia di chi fugge e di chi resta (2013) and Storia della bambina perduta (2014), serve as source text of the analysis. The Neapolitan setting of the novels make them specifically suitable for a study of cultural-specific elements. The study is qualitative and complemented with a quantitative part. It is based on Osimo’s (2011) strategies for the translation of realia. The analysis reveals that cultural-specific elements of the source text tend to be replaced with more generic and international expressions. Prioritizing the narrative over cultural-specific elements the translation shows a tendency towards acceptability.

Martina di Poggio di Giugno : Analisi del trasferimento della linguacultura svedese di Astrid Lindgren in un contesto italiano, con particolare attenzione alla gestione dei realia / Madicken på Junibacken : Översättningsteoretisk analys av överföringen av Astrid Lindgrens svenskspråkiga kulturmiljöer till en italiensk kontext, med särskilt fokus på hanteringen av kulturspecifika element (s.k. realia)

Malin, Mendes January 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines the translation of culture-specific phenomena in children’s literature with a theoretical framework based on “translation studies”. In the translation of children’s literature, translators generally choose translations that brings the content closer to the target culture, creating an “acceptable” translation. At the same time, these choices distance the translation from the culture of the original text. The opposite, translations which remain faithful to the original, are called “adequate” with the terminology of translation studies. This thesis presents the result of the parallel reading of the original Madicken på Junibacken, a children’s book written by famous Swedish author Astrid Lindgren, and the Italian version, Martina di Poggio di Giugno, translated by Fiorella Onesti and Isabella Fanti (Salani, Gl’Istrici, 2003). During the reading of the two books, the phenomena specific to the Swedish language culture (realia, in translation studies’ terminology) were collected, listed, grouped according to type of realia (names of persons and places, food, idiomatic expressions, songs and games) and the translation strategy used. The grouping according to translation strategy took as its starting point the ten strategies described by Osimo (2008). The analysis confirmed the initial hypothesis that Martina di Poggio di Giugno would be, like many other translations of children’s books, an “acceptable” translation. A complimentary analysis of corresponding realia in two other translations of Astrid Lindgren books, the Italian versions of Pippi Longstocking and Bill Bergson, Master Detective, showed that one realia can be translated in different ways, leading to different results. The translations in the second phase of the analysis were deemed as slightly less “acceptable” and therefore closer to equivalence with the original texts.

Välkommen till Lagos : En semantisk översättning från engelska till svenska / Welcome to Lagos. : A Semantic Translation from English to Swedish

Valencia, Isabel January 2020 (has links)
Postcolonial Studies shifted the interest from Western discourses to issues of ideology, power inequality, and ethics. As a consequence of the cultural turn in translation studies in the 1980s, scholars started questioning translation strategies that either assimilate (domestication) or stereotype (exoticization) the source culture. Proposing a semantic, source-text oriented translation principle, Newmark (1981) argues that as long as an equivalent effect can be achieved, literal translation is not just the preferred, but the only acceptable procedure. This paper comments on my own translation of the first 17 chapters of the novel Welcome to Lagos, written by Nigerian writer Chibundu Onuzo. The source text was translated using a semantic translation strategy. The commentary focuses on three key aspects that demanded particular attention during the translation process, due to the fact that they present significant challenges to semantic transfer methods: culture-specific items, stylistic devices, and spoken language markers. As the commentary suggests, the semantic translation strategy worked well on the global text level; occasionally, however, specific translation problems had to be dealt with using a more communicative approach in order to produce an idiomatic target text with an equivalent effect in the target culture.
