This thesis has as its theme the use of information and communication technologies by leaders of Macushi and Wapishana ethnic groups to assist in their social relationships. This theme has raised the debate on issues related to cultural diversity, changes in consumption patterns, among other aspects of local sustainability, which contributed to the understanding of the presence of modernity in the communities where the subjects of this research live. Thus, the objective was to analyze the perception of the indigenous leaders on the implications of the use of information and communication technologies in everyday social practices of their communities and in the monitoring of their relations in different socio-political and cultural contexts. To collect data, we used a field book and audio recordings in which the narratives of indigenous leaders were recorded, highlighting three leaders of each ethnic group. The interviews were conducted during random meetings conducted during August 2014 to June 2016, and the texts formed the body of research. The analysis of the records followed the principles recommended by the phenomenological method, with interpretive approach, seeking to establish a dialogue between the reflections of respondents on their experiences as leaders and the theoretical foundations of leadership, reflexivity and in technology of information and communication. The narratives mobilized different reflexivities where history of struggle in defense of the land, identity and autonomy, among other original rights, is constantly evoked not only the motto of a historical moment, but as a driving foundation of communitarian life among the Macushi and Wapishana people. It was evident that the leaders fear that the use of information and communication technologies by the young indigenous people may help to widen the chasm in community relations; as a result, they advocate that communities must develop strategies for the reflexive monitoring of such use. On the other hand, they also recognize that the empowerment through information and communication technologies will strengthen actions in favor of the autonomy of their communities, working in favor of the indigenous resistance by connecting Macushi and Wapishana people in an ethnic social network, confirming in this way, the thesis that these technological resources serve to support the strengthening of ethnic identity/cultural diversity of these indigenous peoples.

Les écarts interprétatifs sur l'éthique du travail prescrit de surveillance et la compétence de l'assistant d'éducation pour l'esprit du système scolaire / The interpretative differences on the ethics of activity directed surveillance and the competence of the educational assistant for the spirit of the school system

Regnier, Wilfried - Loïc 06 November 2012 (has links)
Since 2003, the people in charge of supervising pupils in French schools have been renamed « education assistants ». What expertise do these workers have in 2013? How will they learn their job? Working as an education assistant is no longer required to become a teacher. However, do they have an educational mission like teachers? Do they evaluate education as part of their duties? An education assistant is a state employee who is meant to supervise pupils in a school, but how does she/he acquire her/his skills? A skill is an « action », but it is also a personal ability developed through past experiences which can influence the job of an education assistant. He/she must analyze his/her practical experience balancing critical distance and personal involvement and thus, acting as a go-between to the institution. Which reasons can lead an individual to take the risk of keeping away from a law-imposed duty? This work aims at studying the reasons which can lead an education assistant to consider his/her missions and his/her duties differently. We will explain that the positioning of an individual away from his/her assigned role is predetermined by the socio professional group of his/her both parents. Actually, mutual understanding in interactions depends on the mother socio professional category whereas interdependence is predestined by the father's social and professional background. A social being develops his/her own reflexivity through personal involvement and his/her own way of acting.

Changing conceptions of literacies, language and development : Implications for the provision of adult basic education in South Africa

Kerfoot, Caroline January 2009 (has links)
This study aims to contribute to the growing body of knowledge on the circumstances under which adult education, in particular adult basic education, can support and occasionally initiate participatory development, social action and the realisation of citizenship rights. It traces developments in adult basic education in South Africa, and more specifically literacy and language learning, over the years 1981 to 2001, with reference to specific multilingual contexts in the Northern and Western Cape. The thesis is based on four individual studies, documenting an arc from grassroots work to national policy development and back. Study I, written in the early 1990s, critically examines approaches to teaching English to adults in South Africa at the time and proposes a participatory curriculum model for the additional language component of a future adult education policy. Study II is an account of attempts to implement this model and explores the implications of going to scale with such an approach.  Studies III and IV draw on a qualitative study of an educator development programme after the transition to democracy. Study III uses Bourdieu's theory of practice and the concept of reflexivity to illuminate some of  the connections between local discursive practices, self-formation, and broader relations of power. Study IV uses Iedema's (1999) concept of resemiotisation to trace the ways in which individuals re-shaped available representational resources to mobilise collective agency in community-based workshops. The summary provides a framework for these studies by locating and critiquing each within shifts in the political economy of South Africa. It reflects on a history of research and practice, raising questions to do with voice, justice, power, agency, and desire. Overall, this thesis argues for a reconceptualisation of ABET that is more strongly aligned with development goals and promotes engagement with new forms of state/society/economy relations.

Disease Representations in Late Modernity: Lung Cancer Stories in the Canadian Print Media

Berger, Jessica 24 September 2012 (has links)
The following thesis describes and analyses the representation of lung cancer in the Canadian print media. The thesis employs a theoretical framework comprised of Giddens’ theory of reflexivity and Goffman’s theory of framing, to understand the social dynamics of negotiation behind the disease’s portrayal in the media, in a late modern context. Late modernity was defined by institutional reflexivity and a focus on understanding and mitigating risk. The research was conducted through a content analysis and examined quantitative trends that contributed to a subsequent qualitative interpretation. The results show that the coverage of lung cancer decreased over time. The analysis shows a discourse of a biomedical institution that has unsuccessfully controlled the disease, a lack of patient advocacy, particularly among celebrities, and a continued conflation of smoking behaviour and lung cancer, all of which contributed to the decreasing coverage. The framing processes point to a society focused on understanding risk through studying the disease’s causes, as well as one concerned with legislative debate and behavioural prevention. The emergence of a frame focused on the patient’s lived experience might contribute to an improved representation of the disease.

Konst och kultur : Möjligheter och hinder att använda konst och kultur som rehabiliterande metod inom primärvården / Arts : Possibilities and obstacles to use arts in rehabilitation in health care

Lundström, Anna January 2012 (has links)
Background: There are future challenges for public health and health care in meeting the needs of a growing and ageing population. Today there are evidence of how arts can contribute to health development and of the connections between arts, health, treating and rehabilitating measures. To be able to meet the future challenges there is a need for new methods, perspectives and views about how to stay healthy, enjoy our existence and for wellbeing. Health care has an important role in rehabilitation through the broad contact with the population. The background of the essay is the pilot project Arts on Prescription that was carried out in order to try a new way of rehabilitation with arts as a factor. The concepts, the results and the discussion from the project connect the pathogenic perspective with the salutogenic perspective. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to examinate possibilities and obstacles to use arts as a part of a complementary method of rehabilitation in primary care. Method: The study is qualitative, and the empirical material is interviews with five individuals responsible for rehabilitation in primary care and a pilot interview. The method is based on a descriptive, ideation approach with a reflexive frame. Results: In the result appear a complex of possibilities and obstacles of using arts in primary care. Possibilities are formed by knowledge, understanding and scientific proof of arts intrinsic possibilities to promote health. Obstacles are formed by historical, economical, organizational and personal connections. Conclusion: The possibilities and obstacles of the study together constitute various dilemmas. The conclusion is that arts advantageously can be used in a number of ways in primary care (and other areas) to promote health, but with account taken to organizational, valuable and normative fields.

Keep the conversation going : a study of conversational spaces during family business succession

Kebbe, Lisen January 2011 (has links)
This practice doctorate study addresses the question of succession in family business, and whether it is possible to facilitate the succession process and enhance family relations by working in a systemic, conversational and dialogical way. The high percentage of successions in family businesses which fail and result in closed down businesses has led to extensive research and caused public debate in Sweden. This study contains of four sections. The first section gives an introduction to my felt need of developing the facilitation of the succession process in business families. It also contains a philosophical background to the systemic way of working and a presents my ontology, epistemology and methods for my study and its ethical considerations. The second section puts my study in a wider perspective of this study with a short presentation of the field of family business research; there are interviews with mainstream consultants that are elaborated on and lastly there is a gender perspective on family business consultations. The eight essays in the third section portray my action research into my facilitation of the succession process in the Bjärges family. The succession process began at the end of 2006 and lasted almost five years. Facilitation was performed during the first two and a half years and the last follow-up conversation was held in the beginning of 2011. The Bjärges essays are written in a generative and reflexive way by means of radical, social poetics thus allowing personal involvement in the text. Some of the essays study the succession process from the perspective of dialogical moments; a couple of them reflect on the succession process in a longer perspective and finally there are follow-up conversations with the family members. The fourth section deals with knowledge gained from working with this study, knowledge I have taken into my practice where I facilitate family members to make their own decisions. It also includes my reflections on theory and on differences in consultancy to family business. Accountants and legal advisors focus on what is best for business, while facilitators working in the dialogical way have family relations at heart. This work proposes a 3rd Way, a new way of facilitating and supporting business families by collaboration of different competences in multi-professional teams. Thus both business and family relations would be addressed.

Nehls, Eddy January 2003 (has links)
This thesis is an ethnological study of the truck-driver profession and an examination of the prerequisites for sexual equality and diversity in the haulage branch. The aim is to: from a cultural perspective, with a special focus on gender and masculinity, study truck-drivers as an occupational group. A main question deals with male dominance within the haulage business. What supports this dominance and what possibilities exist for change? The cultural phenomena within the trucking business are analysed with a particular focus on class. The collective idea, that I found among truck-drivers and haulage firm owners, of a kind of self-imposed “underdog identity’* is important to my analyses. Within the group, however, disloyal competition is widespread. The employment process for drivers is built on responsibility. The driver must prove himself sufficiently reliable before the employer will hand over responsibility for truck, cargo and the assignment itself. Since those who lack the collectively accepted indicators of competence/responsibility have difficulty gaining employment, a kind of “catch 22” situation is created, which is reinforced by the truck-drivers’ “underdog identity”. Those who share the values and outer features with the majority receive considerable advantages in the employment process, which adds to what is already a widespread male dominance and strengthens the cultural homogeneity. The truck-drivers* relationship to freedom forms a “key symbol” in the analysis. The Swedish haulage branch is investigated using Yvonne Hirdman’s gender contract, which makes visible how perceptions of masculinity have been given normative status within the haulage business. Another theme in the analysis is the “masculine manuscript” — embodied by a wellbehaved and reliable, middle-aged, white (Swedish), heterosexual man with a working class upbringing. The manuscript functions as a kind of ideal with which drivers are compared. Those who fit the manuscript are afforded considerable advantages, above all in the recruitment process. In order to draw attention to different types of power within the haulage business, Robert W. Connels’ term hegemonic masculinity is used. With some reservations one can express the long-distance truck-driver as an ideal with hegemonic status within the context of haulage. This category of driver has considerable influence on the definition of how a “real” driver should be and on ideas of how transport work is best organised. This group of drivers is relatively small, but its symbolic influence is large. From a gender perspective, the aim is to “grapple” with the images of truck-drivers, both within and outside of the business. The attitude to the trucker myths is critical. The masculinity ideal of the trucker myth is about the right to seek personal freedom and to live exclusively in and for the truck. Possible explanations for the interest in truck-drivers are discussed with the help of the concept of “masculinity crisis” and George L. Mosses* figure of thought: “the male stereotype”. / <p>Diss.

Bangali, Marcelline 07 March 2011 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the effectiveness of career counseling intevention on self and career construction processes. The study was led at the Bernard Gregory association (ABG), whose mission is to help PhD graduates develop their working skills. The purpose is to identify self-construction patterns that go alongside successful reorientation towards the private sector and to formulate hypotheses to explain what factors and processes are involved. Our conceptual reference is the theory of self-construction (Guichard, 2004). This model is based on two types of reflexivities : on the one hand, dual reflexivity aims at stabilising the self in a desired pattern, on the other hand trinitarian reflexivity leads to revisiting present and past experiences. The current study focuses on this second type of reflexivity. Case studies of young PhD graduates show the impact of dialogical reflexivity processes on how these individuals progressively turn away from their anticipated academic.
