Axelsson, Malin, Heinin, Grace January 2018 (has links)

Václav Havel: "Žebrácká opera" - komplexní kostýmní řešení / VÁCLAV HAVEL: "THA BEGGAR'S OPERA" - Costume Research and Design

Šárková, Kamila January 2015 (has links)
The following text concerns itself with the comprehensive research and design of costumes for The Beggar's Opera by Václav Havel. The author of this thesis presents her historical and theoretical research, the development of her creative concept and final designs. The play was written in the 1970s, when Havel was reacting critically to the current situation in his home country. To make this social criticism up to date, the author imagined doing a production of this play at a cafe in a small town, and sourcing inspiration for the designs of the individual character types from observing modern small town mentality. The text is divided into a theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part concerns itself with the history of the play, studies past productions, and examines Havel's approach to theatre. In the practical part we can follow the development of the design concept, including analyses of the individual characters and the sources of inspiration used. Descriptions of the final designs are supported by images.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Erik Mikletum.pdf: 382698 bytes, checksum: 108bcafa3e74f782fc0041b18cd0d5ad (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-04-07 / Why did house prices fall in 2007‐2009? This is the fundamental question to most Americans, and to those who lent them money. Most homeowners did not care why residential real estate prices rose. They assumed prices always rose, and they should simply enjoy their good fortune. It was not until prices began to fall that people were left searching for answers. How much did regulation or lack thereof play in the role of the devastation? To what degree did greed and unrealistic consumer expectation have on the real estate bubble? Using existing literature as well as face to face interviews of experienced leaders within the real estate industry in California who experienced both the up and down of the real estate cycle, the overarching purpose of this study is to investigate the opinions and beliefs of the leaders and drivers within the real estate industry about the cause of the real estate bubble that occurred sharply in 2008 . Specifically, this project will focus on the opinions of real estate industry leaders who worked in the center of the subprime universe located in Irvine, California, during 2004‐2008. Comparing the mainstream beliefs with the interviewees it is fair to say that the main finding in the mainstream beliefs are reflected very well with the finding of the subject’s opinion. The thesis is divided into 6 chapters starting with 'introduction', followed by chapter 2 'Literature Review'. Chapter 3 is 'Research Methodology' followed by chapter 4 'Data Presentation'. Finally, the results are discussed in chapter 5 'Analysis and Discussion' and conclusions in Chapter 6.

Framing a War and a People: A Mixed Methods Study of Portrayals of Iraqi Violence / Mixed Methods Study of Portrayals of Iraqi Violence

Dittmer, Jacob Peter 06 1900 (has links)
ix, 99 p. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / This study examines how the news media and U.S. officials within the Bush administration utilized rhetoric and specific words over others to frame the violence and civil unrest in Iraq following the U.S. invasion. This study incorporates a mixed methods approach to framing analysis. It seeks to advance framing research into the role of the media in presenting dominant frames set forth by powerful political elites. By examining Department of Defense news briefings, this study critiques the officials' framing of the violence and unrest in Iraq. Likewise, through a content analysis of two newspapers' coverage of the Iraq War, it examines the frequency of certain key terms as it attempts to locate the emergence of dominant rhetorical frames, particularly "insurgency." Results reveal that officials framed Iraq's insurgency as part of the war on terror and the insurgency frame emerged in print during the periods of study. / Committee in charge: Prof. John Russial, Chair; Prof. Patricia A Curtin; Prof. Carl Bybee

Cerqueira, Patricia Conceição Borges Franca Fialho January 2014 (has links)
This research aims to analyze the figurations of alterity, taking into account the process of identitarian (re)construction of the characters and their relation to cultural memory, based on the reading of four Moacyr Scliar’s novels: Os Deuses de Raquel (1975); O centauro no jardim (1980); A estranha nação de Rafael Mendes (1983); e, Na noite do ventre, o diamante (2005). The relations between literature, identity and alterity are central to the contemporary debate. Pierre Ouellet says that alterity is, without a doubt, one of the most studied phenomena and concepts used by Human Sciences, Letters and Philosophy for the last thirty years; but it is also a sense of the polysemous and most controversial uses that can be made today, even in more or less ideological contexts. It directs because the epistemological basis of (re)questioning the sociohistorical context and the ethical and aesthetic scope of this phenomenon, or that notion in light of these different meanings or their various jobs. In contemporary Brazilian literature, authors from different ethnicities work systematically with the issues of immigration, of alterity and cultural memory. For, although the contribution of immigrants to the formation of our society has been extremely important, these elements were being represented in a shy mode, or even, homogenized, both in Brazilian literature and history. Moacyr Scliar is an author of Jewish origin who works extensively with issues related to identity, diversity and minorities. Scliar, himself, says that it "gives voice to those who do not have it, making their stories to the official version of history that misrepresents them or is pasteurized". This way, the author, through social thematic approach, opens space for reflection on alterity. Thus, the study of “figuration of alterity”, present in the romances analyzed in this research, becomes necessary since in these works the characters are always in a position, as Linda Hutcheon would say, of “ex-centric”, “marginalized”, "peripheral figures of fictional history," this is, they are always “the other”, “the different”. Those chosen texts question the interrelations and cultural conflicts through the figure of the "immigrant" character who is on the borderline "between two worlds" and that often struggles to integrate itself, ceasing, thus, to be "the other.
